Argyle
Good morning, Argyle, C.C. and gang - a real speed run this morning, but I didn't catch the theme until the unifier. I liked the inclusion of the extra 'rah' at the bottom.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard the term 'Tomfoolish' -- 'tomfoolery', yes. Everything else was very much Monday-level. Loved 'Taking things wrong'; didn't love 'dater' or 'QB's scores'/'TDs'.
Argyle, nice job on the blog. To answer your question, as yet there's no must-have toy for Christmas; there wasn't even a must-see item at this year's Toy/Hobby Show in New York, which is where the manufacturers unveil their products for the year.
Today is All Saints Day.
Did You Know?:
- The first sound-on-film motion picture was Phonofilm. It was shown at the Rivoli Theater in New York City in April, 1923.
- There are approximately 50,000,000,000 galaxies in the cosmos.
- The Lincoln Highway (from New York to California) was the first coast-to-coast highway in the United States. It opened for travel in 1913.
Morning, all!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not a speed run for me today. Maybe it's just because it's early on a Monday morning and I'm uncaffeinated, but I just had trouble getting on Ms. Grabowski's mental wavelength.
I initially put in LASSO for RIATA, HALE for WELL, TIE for TOY and AIRWAY for AIRSAC, all of which slowed me down considerably. And the clues for ON ME ("Tab-grabber's words") and BATS ("Home run hitters' hitters") were just too tricky for my brain to process at first glance. Throw in PERMA (an abbreviation which I've never seen or heard before), and, well, I just had a hard time gittin' her done.
I did finish unassisted, but definitely not in typical Monday time. More like Wednesday or Thursday, in fact.
Good morning Argyle and all, a nice write up Argyle and an easy solve today. One pass, no erasures, I thought, and then one correction. I misspelled Remo as Reno and did not see the error until coming here.
ReplyDeleteI did not have a problem with the clue/answer socially active sort/dater or with the QB’s scores/TDs. My favorite clue was “Taking things wrong”/”theft”.
Hope you all have a great Monday.
Good Morning, Argyle and friends. This was smooth sailing, but just what I need to start the workweek.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite clue was, as noted by others, Taking Things Wrong? = THEFT. Too bad there wasn't a way to place it beside Burglar = ROBBER. Unfortunately, we are now entering the thieving season. Break-ins seem to increase in November and December.
We had an all-time low number of trick-or-treaters last night. Only two children came by. So, if anyone wants some candy ...
QOD: I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes. ~ Oprah Winfrey.
Good Morning Argyle, CC and All,
ReplyDeleteMy only hang up was the middle block in the North. In Fat instead of In Oil SCREWed up the seasonal laughter. I knew RAH was in there but it made 7D __HF? I didn't know Barbara Hale. Also spelled Elaine wrong. It is Monday. I left my keys to the office home this AM to start things off right!
First year we didn't accompany the kids for Halloween. More horrifying to have the Rents tagging along apparently. They behaved (so they said) and had a good time.
Have a great Monday.
Husker Gary,
ReplyDeleteNo. We don't celebrate Halloween in China. Was amazed by the number of visitors to your house. What candies did you put in your 150 bags?
Anonymous,
Start your own damned blog if you don't enjoy what I offer here.
Good day to all,
ReplyDeletePretty easy run today, except for a couple of blips. Like Barry, I began with tie instead of toy and airway instead of airsac, but they were quickly remedied.
Not much else to comment on except a question.... 42d - Cowboy's org/ NFL..... Are the Cowboys still in the league?
Good Morning Argyle, C.C. et al.
ReplyDeleteGreat write-up, Argyle. About frozen fries - they can either be pre-fried or baked. It depends on the manufacturer. I like Ore-Ida, because they work well in crossword puzzles ;-D
I had the same thumbs ups and downs as everyone - loved "taking things wrong" for THEFT, "Half and half" for ONE, didn't like TOM FOOLISHNESS.
But this was an easy Monday solve for me, without any real glitches. All in all, a good start to the week. Have a wonderful day, everyone!
Hello All!
ReplyDeleteNice work Gail and Argyle!
Things have gotten exponentially worse here. My high school friend of 57 years passed away suddenly from metastatic lung cancer. (I loved her dearly. She never smoked. Go figure.)
It is difficult to NOT go to pieces. I am still trapped in my bed as I cannot put any weight on the leg with the 3 compound fractures. Two weeks until next visit with orthpod.
I enjoyed today's puzzle. It was quite a lot of fun.
(Hands up for TIE.) Took a few minutes longer than a usual Monday offering, but that was OK.
It took Medicare people 5 days to get me medicine for unmentionable problem. I hit myself over the head when I realized I could have just called my friend and former student with MD immediately.
Have a happy day!
Hello Puzzlers - What Barry said.
ReplyDeleteEasy one this morning. I did it online since our San Jose Mercury seems to come later and later each day. Tomfoolish is really a word? I had "toofoolish" at first. I think the QB gets credit for a score when he passes for a TD.
ReplyDeleteGO GIANTS!! This has been a very entertaining World Series.
My only problem today was not realizing I had TOO FOOLISH and hence ONOE for ON ME until coming here. I had the O in WORK before looking at the clue for TOY so didn't fall into the TIE trap. I also liked THEFT, but at first was wondering what could end in ING and still have enough of an answer in front, so let the perps take care of it.
ReplyDeleteGEO Prisms were solid and reliable and lasted forever. There are still a few of them on the road around here. Better than the Chev version which followed, by all accounts.
Good morning, all.
ReplyDeleteI liked today's cheerful theme. Same favs as already mentioned.
BTW, congratulations to Gail Grabowski, who had a "double hitter" this morning, having also constructed today's Newsday puzzle.
Enjoy the day!
Good Morning Argyle, C.C., et al, This was a nice fun run and write-up and the only thing that slowed me down was getting to the unifier and trying to figure out what it was referring to before I finished. It was fun to discover what it was! DATER is not on my list (Historical Chronologist or Consumer of Dried Fruit?) and I want to know if anyone thinks there is a more common fill than ONO? Thanks John Lenon!
ReplyDeleteC.C., every culture has its own unique customs and I wondered if there are certain days in China that are special mainly for children. Joann makes up bags of candy that each contain a fun-sized bar (didn't we have that last week in a puzzle?), some Smarties (or some such) and some other random choice. We were overwhelmed and will have to "up the ante" next year as 150 bags didn't cut it even on a very cool evening where the kids started at 4:30 pm.
Addenedum to Dennis's DYK's, it is still dark when I get my Omaha World Herald each morning and Orion is beautiful in the SSW sky. Look for the belt (three in a row) and follow them down to Sirius, the brightest and nearest star to Earth that can be seen north of the equator! The light from Sirius left there in 2002 and is just getting here tonight and it is the CLOSEST star we can see.
If you were on a planet going around Betelgeuse in Orion's "armpit" and had a very powerful telescope that could see Earth today, you would see an America contemporary to Columbus's voyages as it takes 500 years for that light to traverse between our little blue planet and that red giant star.
I grew up sleeping 12 feet from the Lincoln Highway(US 30) in Arlington, Nebraska in pre-interstate days. OMG, how the trucks rolled by! Can you even imagine trying to drive on two-lane highways now to go any real distance?
Good morning Argyle and puzzlers all. I thought there was a bit more misdirection than we usually see on Monday, but I enjoyed a fairly easy solve. I created a few problems for myself when I started filling downs after three rows across. With the SOU in place, SOUNDSTAGE jumped out at me. STUD quickly got me back on track though. I did the same with the other long down by putting in TOMFOOLERY, but the very obvious TAI got me out of that mess.
ReplyDeleteFun, quick solve with no help. It's Monday!
TIE never entered my mind. I've gotten very few of them for presents over the years and have given even fewer. TOY, on the other hand, has been a holiday staple for many years, now. I have a daughter-in-law with a very wacky sense of humor, so I still receive wierd toys at times.
Hands up for the "taking things wrong" clue. I started to put in STEAL, but decided to wait until I checked the perps.
That was an easy ride today, but I really liked the theme, and lots of good fresh clues.
ReplyDeleteWe had a shortage of trick or treaters last night. Usually our neighborhood is filled with kids, but it was much lighter than usual. Maybe because it was a Sunday or else everyone is just growing up around here. The most popular costume for the girls was being a "guy". Some of them were quite lame, but a couple of girls came up and I couldn't tell they were girls. They were very proud of themselves for looking so much like guys. When they left, I noticed the pants half way down their butts. Very funny.
Have a great day. Lots to do here as usual.
@ Fermatprime,
ReplyDeleteCondolences on the passing of your friend. Being stuck in bed at a time like this makes it even worse. Here's hoping all is well on your next ortho visit and you'll soon be up and around again.
Hi all....
ReplyDeleteSort of a more difficult puzzle level for a Monday (to me). I finished it with a tiny bit of help. I just couldn't get 6A even with 3 of the 5 letters filled in and same for 6D (once the light dawned, and my head cleared after being dented with my V-8 can, I 'gotter done').
I thought the theme was well hidden, it did not appear to me until Argyle's write up (good job BTW). I laughed (ruefully) after I saw it.
Loved 'bit of seasonal laughter' and half and half. Very clever!
I have never heard of TOM FOOLISH either, maybe it's regional.
Fermatprime, I am sorry for your loss. I hope your ordeal of these past weeks will soon be over. You have had a rough time.
Happy Anniversary, Carol. I hope you and your husband have a wonderful celebration.
ReplyDeleteI owned a Geo Prizm in the early 90s. I loved that car. It was built well. I survived a head- on crash with only a broken knee. Sadly, my car did not survive.
Good Morning C.C.,Argyle and all,
ReplyDeleteI thought the puzzle was fine. Enjoyed seeing Barbara Hale;knew faster than perps could fall. Argyle's comment on their relationship was a treat; that was the question of the day.
'Tom Foolish', imo, isn't a word, but that didn't stop me.It was a very quick and smooth ride, with a novel theme that I had to take a minute to glean.
Thanks, Gail; nice effort.
Argyle, did you ever ask your sister about the mantel clock- an Ansonia? I'm just curious.
If its a problem, don't bother
with it.
Fermatprime, I know your heart is broken. I'm hoping this time until you're back on your feet will begin to pick up some.Glad to see
you on the blog.
Bob,how is your mother?
Bill G., think of you often and am praying for your recovery.
Tinbeni, hope Kris is doing OK. She's lucky to have you.
Have a nice day everyone.
Hahtool, many thanks and since my Joe married me on my birthday, it's doubly nice for me today :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's our 40th !!! He's a KEEPER!!
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteNice Monday, I love Mondays - I can do them! Agree with comments about tomfoolish and my spell check agrees too. And I think Taking things wrong is masterful cluing.
However, robbery and burglary are not exactly synonymous. This from Wiki: A burglar enters a premises as a treaspasser to steal therein.
A robber uses violence toward a person to steal.
Cheers
P.S. Happy birthday and happy anniversary, Carol. How nice to be able to celebrate two occasions at the same time. But I hope you get two presents!
ReplyDeleteFermatprime, I feel so bad for you to have to be bedridden and to have a friend die. I do send best wishes for a good report from your doctor. And condolences on your loss.
Best regards
Carol, a very Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary! Are you having double the celebration as well?
ReplyDeleteFermatprime, jeezus, what an ordeal - it's obvious you have the mental toughness to get through it, and you'll be that much stronger when it's over. My thoughts are with you.
Hi all.
ReplyDeleteLike Dennis said. Took time out from the stupid football game to run through the puzzle.
Pinochle lady in Italy so no game
last Friday.
Lincoln Highway in PA is US Rt30.
Lung cancer more common than one would think in non smokers.
Deja vu all over again with Lee and
Lincecum starting tonight.
Best wishes to all. Take care.
Carol,
ReplyDeleteHappy and Happy; makes it hard for him if he forgets the day.
Under the law, a burglar and a robber are very different people and not synonymous. One involves breaking and entering and the other using force. Just another example of the law being a foreign language, I believe
F. You obviously understand about hanging in, so keep it up and pendulums do swing.
Happy November all
Carol- Happy B'day and Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! Love your new avatar. You two are an adorable couple. Thanks for sharing; it makes it more fun to envision our buddies.
Barry, how is your dad coming along?
Dennis,
ReplyDeleteI like your better half.
better.
ReplyDeleteMR ED, I'm certainly glad to hear that.
ReplyDeleteFermatprime,
ReplyDeleteI'm very sorry to hear your news. I hope your world improves soon. Lung cancer in non smokers just goes to prove what we now know about second hand smoke.
Carol,
Congratulations on your 40th and your birthday!
Barry, how is your dad coming along?
ReplyDeleteWell, he survived the triple-bypass and is scheduled to have the pacemaker/defibrillator implanted tomorrow morning. Right now, though, he's in a lot of pain and discomfort from the surgery and isn't up to having visitors (or even talking to them on the phone).
I'm getting this all second and third-hand right now, but it's perfectly understandable considering the amount of trauma involved in open-heart surgery. Never having had a single broken rib in my life, I can't imagine the pain involved with having all one's ribs broken in order to get at the heart...
Husker- Some shocking news: ONO is not as common as you think. ERA is the most common word of all, regardless of letter length. ONO ranks 148th. Of three letter words, ONO is not even in the top ten in popularity.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, there are actually people who devote a large portion of their life compiling these stats.
Hello, Argyle, C.C. and all puzzlers.
ReplyDeleteGreat blogging, Santa.
Nice Monday puzzle today that filled easily through the top, center and most of the bottom. San REMO was easy, but then I thought CREED, CREDO, TENET for church doctrine and that held me up until DOGMA emerged with ENERGY.
Did not have TOMFOOLERY as I had left out ON_E so filled it in with the blog.
I agree, taking things wrong, THEFT is brilliant.
Well, the wedding last night was not the bizarre event I imagined. In fact, it was quite elegant though the setting was strange. It's a former ice house (back in the day ice blocks were delivered for the ice boxes); however, it's in a primitive state with concrete floors and no embellishments of any kind. The room where the ceremony was has no roof, so it was open air, 40 ft high. Luckily the weather was pleasant.
Fermat:
I'm so sorry about your friend and I do hope things will improve for you.
Have a happy Monday everyone!
Carol:
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday and congratulations on your Anniversary!
Yeah I finished all but 7 or so clues from todays. Much better than from last week. The bottom left gave me the most trouble. got 27A with the only 2 letters filed in, the X and the K. I call this a win for me. I hope that tomorrows doesn't throw me for too much of a loop.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Argyle, C.C. and all,
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy 40th anniversary /birthday , Carol!!Have a great day!You too, Joe!
I love Gail's xwds because I can do them pretty easily, but I have to admit I did look up the Earp boys just because I didn't want to wait.
Argyle, thanks for all the clarifications. Needed to grok "on me" and "woods".Good point about the QB's. As usual, I didn't see the theme while filling. And, I had hi ho for a bit, probably thinking of my daughter who had to go back to work today(Cameron is 4 months).
Dennis, always enjoy the Do You Know facts. Lincoln HW arrives in CA via Reno, over the Donner Pass (Hot August Nights anyone?), an easy turn off to Lake Tahoe.
Husker Gary, enlightening mind-boggling information about Sirius..will check in the morning.
BTW
ReplyDeleteArgyle, I do not beleive a week goes by that in either your Monday or Tuesday effort, a clue for Santa or something related (ELF, REINDEER) or HO HO does not appear; I guess they also love you out in the constructor world.
Wedding in an ICEHOUSE? It would be a cold day in...
oh nevermind
Any costume pics to post as avatars?
Happy Birthday Carol! Congrats to you and Joe on 40 years as well. You made it easy on him. He only has to remember one date!
ReplyDeleteHello everybody. Nice puzzle today; I enjoyed it. It was over all too soon.
ReplyDeleteAt first I saw the AH in the long fills, so I thought the theme was the AH. This led me to put AHS in for 69A, in spite of feeling that something somewhere was wrong because the clue called for "one of." TOMFOOL*** and DATE* didn't help me there. Only after getting 64A did I finally realize the "hook" was RAH, not just AH, and away I went.
Liked THEFT and BATS, among others. Didn't like ROBBER, DATER, and TOMFOOLISH. SOUTHKOREA is an awesome fill. ELAINE, HUBERT, XENA, and ORRIN are our first names of the day. (And maybe even GENE, TRIP, WREN, OPAL, STU, and SELMA?) Not gonna count RICH, BARBARA, and TOM.
Carol, happy birthday!
Carol again, happy anniversary!
Fermatprime, get well soon!
Argyle, great blog. Thank you.
There was an interesting program on PBS not long ago about the Lincoln Highway. Made me want to "git on the road agin" and drive it cross-country.
Best wishes to you all this fine first day of November.
creature, the clock is a Sessions.
ReplyDeleteI emailed that to what your profile said was your yahoo mail. Maybe it got listed as spam?
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this puzzle because it was easy, even for me. My mind so often goes blank when I see a clue I know but can't think of (Della Street-Barbara Hale). I refused to look it up and it came to me.
I never watched Seinfeld but knew Elaine for some reason. Osmosis, I guess. I even got the theme for once.
Eleanor Roosevelt also said:
A woman is like a tea bag.You never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.
Good afternoon,
Marge
Carol: Happy Birthday, as well!
ReplyDeleteDOGMA is also a movie staring Ben Afleck and Matt Damon.
Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King marched together in SELMA, as well as other locations, during the '60s. Heschel is the one with the beard.
A Guinness world record was set at the Superdome at the Saint's game yesterday. There were at least 17,777 fans attending the game between the Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers who came in Halloween costume. Of course, it's New Orleans, How can you tell whether or not the fans were in costume?
Hello, puzzlers,
ReplyDeleteThis was an enjoyable puzzle that went together very smoothly for me. I liked it, of course. No real problems, though I put in 'tomfoolery' and realized it had to be the wrong part of speech, so it became 'tomfoolish' which sounds like a 'made up' to me.
Carol and Joe, Congratulations! It sounds to me like it's gonna last!I received my engagement ring on my 40th! What a surprise!
Oh, and Carol, Happy birthday to another Scorpio!
Fermatprime, hang in there. There's no where to go but up!
Marvin, Congrats! Just keep a positive outlook and don't forget to use the perps! They help a lot. There's no way you can figure out all the answers without some help! If you could, what would be the point?
Great writeup as usual, Santa!
Lemonade, I loved your noticing the 'Santa' references on Monday! How true!
Will someone please tell me what the statement below means and how to use it?
Nothing much to comment on the puzzle that hasn't already been said. My hand's up for "tomfoolery" instead of "tomfoolish". I have never heard the term "tomfoolish".
ReplyDeleteCarol, CONGRATS to you and Joe for that wonderful 40 year accomplishment!! Also, HAPPY HAPPY birthday to you as well!
Fermatprime, I believe you mentioned your friend a short time ago. It's tough to lose a friend-especially your BEST friend. I feel so bad that you will be unable to attend the services. If I remember correctly, she was of the Jewish faith which means they will be tomorrow no? I will be thinking about you. She may be gone but the memories you have of her will live on forever.
The deer are definitely in "rut" as there were two instances of co-workers hitting one today. Both were bucks, one a 10-pointer and the other a 6-pointer. I guess I better keep an extra keen eye out.
Argyle, I could have dumped your email also. I get so much spam. Try it again and i'll be on the look out- if you feel like it.I wonder how many I have dumped. They all start looking suspicious to me. I'll be more cautious.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a TD scored without involvement of the QB...
ReplyDeleteCarol, happy anniversary of your birth AND marriage!
Fermatprime, I'm sorry for your loss, and the frustration of your confinement.
Barry G., I think many of us can relate to the helplessness you're feeling, worrying about a parent (or child) who is ailing, but you're unable to be there with them. My thoughts are with you.
Good evening Argyle, CC, et al., Likes are the same as have been stated. Loved the reference to Santa's two fine Ho's. Guess the third one is a little busy. Also loved the Cowboy reference. I do love me some cowboys.
ReplyDeleteSanta: I think the latest, hottest toy going would if nothing else require batteries. I'll send you a description for my own choices. Love your new Avatar. Lookin' good!
Carol: Happy Happy Birthday, my friend. and a very Happy Anniversary to you and Joe. You know how to consolidate and make good times even better. I'll toast to you both tonight...right now actually. Cheers, my friend, and I wish you many more of both occasions.
Barry G: You and your family are in my thoughts as well. I really do know how hard it is to be far away during this struggle.
ReplyDeleteFerma: I am so sorry for you loss and the discomfort you are in. Geeze! And you can still type and make sense. You're a lesson to us all. I wish you well and continued strength.
Enjoy your night. I'm drinking mine. Cheers, Carol!!!
Creature, I forwarded the original with "Clock" as subject.
ReplyDeleteAnnette, kick off returns can be TDs with no QB involved. You could say the same for some punts, also.
I guess interceptions could be said to involve the QB...for the other team!
Hi again.
ReplyDeleteI am wondering what the spam record/day is for members of this group. The good, bad and ugly are all mixed togther and have to be seperated. Anyone close to 70 like I am. (have 4 e-mail addresses)
The doctor's appt was moved to the Pediatic Clinic. The main bldg is falling apart. They have cute things on the walls and teeny, tiny
furniture.
No.1 son (only) flys back on Wed.
I have been worried all week. He
plans on feeding 'er Majesty's
Squirrels tomorrow.
take care.
I love Mondays...can do all puzzles and still get some work done!
ReplyDeleteAgree with comments about "tomfoolish"...never heard it used in that manner.
Dennis, with that many galaxies...it seems arrogant to think we are the only beings.
We gave out a 13 gal trash can full of candy...minus the chocolate we ate...ate it with coffee and still slept!
CC, That`s telling `em!
Fermatprime, I sincerely hope your trials will soon be over and you`ll be able to do what you want.
Carol: What possessed you to combine a birthday with an anniversary? That`s like canceling one gift opportunity!!!!Happy both!
I commuted in college...we usually hit a deer the first day of "smoke pole" season...once we hit one at the beginning of two seasons in the same year, muzzle loader and modern gun...same girl, different cars. The dogs were running all of them and a road didn`t slow them up. A big box store once sold "deer whistlers" to affix to your front bumper. Supposedly, they made a noise only deer could hear and scared them away...
A little harder than the usual Monday fare, but not by much (14 minutes).
ReplyDeleteSan Remo or Sanremo is also an actual Italian city, located NW of Genoa on Italy's west coast.
Creature: I spoke to my Mom yesterday. She didn't have a very good weekend and had an appointment to see the doctor again today. I don't yet know how that went. I'll know more later in the week. I appreciate your concern.
Thank you everyone for the warm wishes - I very much appreciate all of you!! I know we refer to each other as cyber friends but I really think of you as real ones.
ReplyDeleteC.C. what a wonderful thing you have created here. I know all of us have been enriched by it and each other.
Kickoff and punt returns for TDS do not involve a QB.
ReplyDeleteAlso a direct snap to a running back(wildcat offense) resulting in a TD involves no QB.
Fake punts and fake field goals that score TDS do not use QBS.
I'm sure there are many other "trick" plays that score TDS without a QB.
