Note from C.C.:

Happy Birthday to dear Creature! Her kindness & warmth shine through in each of her comments here on the blog. Creature has been through some difficult times since she lost her husband 2 years ago today. She doesn't post much these days, but she still reads us every day and cares very much about this blog and our regulars. Dave, please work extra hard and find the sweetest cake for our special Creature.

  1. (Since today's keywords were all synonyms, They're all woven into one (badly disjointed) story. I think you'll recognize the reindeer held over from yesterday.)

I once had a FOREIGN POLICY
My insurance agent sold it to me.
    It paid my wife double
    If I got into trouble
    While wandering across the sea!

So off to the Northlands I sails,
    Where I sampled Scandinavian ales.
    I checked out the hookers:
    Found most were great lookers,
But some were some mighty STRANGE TAILS!
    (sic)

If you want an example, I'll answer,
There was one who on stage was a prancer.
She had hooves, 'stead of feet,
    Though the antlers were neat,
Now that was an EXOTIC DANCER!

At last, my travels were over,
Till bills nearly wrecked my composure.
While I'd been 'cross the waters,
To the bank we'd become squatters.
They launched A LIEN INVASION foreclosure!

    My adventure may sound FOREIGN and odd;
This tale of STRANGE strands that I've trod.
    But locations EXOTIC,
    Though unorthodoxic,
Were less ALIEN than some on home sod!

  2. Morning, all (and Happy Birthday Creature, wherever you are)!

Mostly smooth solve today. Struggled a bit in exactly two spots. First, I've never heard of LINE SCORE before, so I needed every perp to confirm it. Second, I was convinced that 41D could only be CARBONATE (which didn't fit) since I thought AERATE only involved air. Turns out that AERATE can also refer to carbon dioxide. Live and learn...

I finished the puzzle and didn't even think about the theme until I realized it was missing a "unifier" entry. So I went back and looked at the four theme entries, and whacked myself on the head with the V8 can because it was right there in plain sight!

I really enjoyed the clue for EXOTIC DANCER, "Entertainer with many fans?" Cute!

I didn't know the term LINE SCORE, but it filled with perps. Oh, so this is what they were talking about? Maybe I'll remember it next time…

    Have a great day, everyone!

  4. Good Morning, Argyle and friends. I though this was a tad challenging for a Tuesday. I realized early that the theme was Alien and Foreign, but had no idea who Nick Fury was, so figured out the STRANGE part but the TALES was slow in coming.

Although I saw and enjoyed The Princess Bride, I had to Google CARY ELWES name. I don't think I have ever seen him in anything else.

Happy Birthday, Creature! I know this must be a bittersweet day for you. We miss you and wish you all the best.

  5. Greetings!

Thanks so much, David and Argyle.

Only hangup was LINE SCORE, requiring several perps.

    Can't aeem to fall asleep.

A very happy birthday to you, Creature!!

    Cheers!

  6. I must have been on David's wave length as this one was a fairly easy swim. Easily Tuesday difficulty and easier than yesterday's puzzle. As a base ball coach you keep a line score. It is useful when you want to see when the runs were scored. It is similar to the box score which provides more information When I was younger the newspapers used to print only the line scores then they were replaced by the box scores as I got older now you will see a line score for smaller games (i.e. youth games or interschoolastic.)
    Owen: loved the limericks today.

  7. STRANGE TALES was a gimme. Back in the mid-sixties STRANGE TALES starred Dr. Strange and Nick Fury, Tales to Astonish starred Ant Man and the Hulk, Tales of Suspense starred Captain America and Iron Man and Journey into Mystery starred Thor. They sold so well that Dr. Strange, Nick Fury, the Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man all got their own titles.

Knowing all this I was able to complete this Tuesday puzzle with ease.

  10. Good morning!

Nothing too tough about this one. Started to enter FOREIGN affairs, but ran out of room.

I remember line scores from my radio days. UPI used to issue line scores via teletype as the games were underway. That's where I learned that SD is not South Dakota.

Argyle, be honest, how long did it take you to type that CCCP translation? (Or did you find it somewhere and cut and paste it?)

I remember Cary Elwes as the upstart meteorologist who got blown away (literally) in Twister.

Happy birthday, Creature, if you're tuned in today.

  11. Happy Birthday, Creature. May it be a good day!

My parents owned a CIERA. My son's favorite place to deploy (before the wars) was Diego Garcia, an ATOLL with a military base in the Indian Ocean. My parents owned a MALT shop when I was young. my D-I-L lived under CCCP rule (Lithuania)until she was 16--we have heard stories that we find fascinating. She describes how bad it was.

I found this to be a fairly difficult Tuesday puzzle for me. I forgot to look for a theme, so had to rely on Argyle. Thanks again, Argyle, for the Link under the white spaces.

    Time to get to granddaughters.
    Have a good day, everyone,

  12. Fun run for a Tuesday.

@Hatoolah -- Cary Elwes most recent role of note is as recurring guest star: the elusive international art thief, Pierre Despereaux on the TV show, "Psych".
Big crossover of fans of "Princess Bride" and "Psych"-- so he plays the role with amused flair.

  13. Good morning everyone.

    Happy Birthday, Creature.

Got all the way through, looked for what the theme might be, and had to read Argyle's write-up to get an inkling. I felt the connection among the theme words was amorphous.
Unknowns like CARY ELWES, and spelling head-scratchers like TIPPI, FEIN, and CIERA were easily perped. BH helped me with LAMÉ.

    Have a good day.

Hmm, this is going to be difficult.

I thought I had the perfect cake, but it turns out I posted it last year!

  15. Hi Y'all! A good Tuesday puzzle without too many problems for me. Thanks, David. Great expo, Argyle, you've outdone yourself in the tunes links yesterday and today. Three I had never heard but really enjoyed as well as a couple I had heard and enjoyed again.

I started strong knowing the #1 across & down and kept pluggin' away until done. I looked for a theme but didn't get it until Argyle turned on the light.

Had no idea about Westley. I watched that with my kids way back when it first came out. Has to be 20 to 30 years ago now.

Happy birthday, Creature! Buy yourself a lovely gift from the person who knows best what you want. Hope things are going tolerably.

  16. happy Birthday to Creature today! It's also our D-I-L's birthday and so we called her this morning too.

Not too much to comment on today. The Billy Joel clip seemed a bit off key and not nearly as good as it sounds on our CD--but a good memory anyway.

    Have a lovely Tuesday everyone!

    My MIL is an EDIE.

I enjoyed Rex Stout's NERO Wolfe stories, and got inspired to try my hand at keeping an orchid alive. Now I know why he had a room dedicated to the OHSO beautiful things; mine didn't like life in the sunroom. It died one weekend when we were gone and the AC wasn't on....

  20. Greetings and happy day to all!

Happy birthday to you, Creature. I miss your posts and hope you are coping well. Do something fun today.

This puzzle was as clear as SARAN wrap, thank you, David Poole. My pencil almost quite literally flew across the grid but stumbled on FOREIGN (AFFAIRS)until POLICY was revealed.

I've not heard of STRANGE TALES but the perps did their job and except for GLEAN where I had AMASS the rest fell in place.

TIPPI crossing TIP IN was fun to see and of course, ANISE, brings licorice to mind. I love licorice!

You all have a wonderful day! Carpet cleaning time.

  21. Argyle: Another great write-up & links. Thank you!

Now I know Bill G. wrote in CARY ELWES quickly. He has mentioned the movie "The Princess Bride" is one of his favorites.

My fave today (of course) was ALES, I even enjoy them before-and-after Happy Hour.

  25. Good morning all. I've been awol since DW and I were out visiting our son in Palo Alto over a long weekend. His twin brother flew in from Austin, so we had a good time. Very action packed, so there was no time to try and meet anyone from the Coven, unfortunately. We saw Alcatraz, the Cable Car museum, Muir Woods, ate at Fish in Sausalito and the best little place in Palo Alto and even went to Fitzgerald tide pool for a rare low tide. Between them all, I've not walked that far or seen that much change of grade in a long, long time, but I survived. A good time was had by all and it was enjoyable seeing Juan and Amahl.

I did get the puzzle in the Mercury on Saturday, but Sunday only had the NYT. Did it, but it was like a mouth full of feathers. Did it online yesterday, but can't say I like that method. Back home today to the pencil and paper, and enjoyed it a lot.

Anyway, fun puzzle, David, and great write-up with cool images, Argyle. And inspired limericks today, Owen.

An enjoyable puzzle with few slowdowns, could not recall how to spell CARY ELWES, but the actor was familiar, as he also was wonderful in Mel Brooks' Robin Hood, Men in Tights which also had Richard LEWIS and crossword favorite Roger REES.

Martin, impressive knowledge of the early years of Marvel comics; I had a small comic book store inside a drug store, in the 70s, along with a collection. Both are long gone.

JD, I enjoyed your HUGS video. Good stuff!

  52. Jayce, I was fascinated by your video. The man made noise issue was an eye opener. Who knew how noisy BART or even a tractor could be?

The events in Illinois on this past Sunday made this even more chilling for me. Your boss suggested that your work may someday rival the satellite imagery(hurricane) or Doppler radar(tornado) warning systems. That would be life changing!

On Sunday we were glued to our tv's (yes windy, tv's can save your life!) as our local meteorologists showed us very detailed images of Doppler radar, using red for outflow and blue for inflow, indicating rotation. Then combined with storm direction and Google Earth, showed us what neighborhoods the spinning winds were approaching. Evidence later that day showed they were 100% dead balls accurate and save hundreds of lives by giving several minutes of real-time warning

Maybe someday your hard work will pay off and your grandchildren will say "my grandpa worked on that project!"

  57. Good Wednesday morning, folks. Thank you, David Poole, for a swell puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for the swell review.

Well, got through this easily yesterday. However, I was not home much to go to the blog and post. Therefore, I am posting now.

The theme seemed to deal with STRANGE, ALIEN, etc. So that worked.

Got MEDEA with perps. ALICIA appeared with a wag after I had a few letters. Never heard of her.

    Liked NOAH, the Ark helmsman.

Did not know CARY ELWES either. Perps and wags.

Happy birthday, Creature. Miss you on the blog.

TTP, yes I went to the dentist Monday. Had an old crown removed, a temporary one installed, and I get my new one in three weeks.

See you later today after I get Wednesday's puzzle done.

    Abejo

  58. JD- wow! My eyes are all watery from the free hugs, so I went back and hugged each of you again. You can't imagine…

My tummy aches from Dave's cakes- super icing finger lickin' good.Hope everyone got a big piece!
I'm definitely full, but the last one took my heart.
Thanks, Dave, for the gallant effort. I'll never forget.

Love to my dear friends. Nothing came near it.Wish we could have a big meeting before it would be too late to stay up all night. Maybe its too late but I'd sure give it a try.
