Note from C.C.:
Big Easy sent me this picture last night. He said:
"Granddaughters Jenna and Kelsey with TOBY KEITH and Jason Aldean today at the Bayou Country Superfest held in Tiger Stadium. How they got to get a picture with those two is baffling."
Morning, all!
ReplyDeleteWell, the American Mensa website was still showing Saturday's puzzle and the Merriam Webster site was still showing Sunday's puzzle, but I was finally able to find today's puzzle at the original Chicago Tribune website (http://games.chicagotribune.com/games/daily-crossword/. Which is to say, it pretty much took longer to find the puzzle today than to solve it...
Nice theme for Memorial day. I wasn't familiar with the Pentagon memorial, so that was a learning moment. I also was completely unfamiliar with ILOVELA and DEDE. The former could be inferred from the clue, but I needed all four perps to get the latter. Everything else was smooth sailing today.
Time to fire up the grill! Have a great Memorial day, all.
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteNice speed run to start the holiday. Well done, C.C. and Argyle.
I remembered DEDE Dinah immediately. You can thank me now for not linking it. It was probably the absolute WURST Fankie Avalon song -- and there weren't any good ones.
Six months are up....time to get to those chores.
Well, good morning. Pretty smooth all around. Thanks C.C. for a bit of relief after the weekend's non-solves for me. Just didn't have enough time. Today's theme is certainly timely. Nice links in your expo, Argyle. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHope the weather cooperates for your gatherings today.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone,
Nice to have a walk in the park after a weekend of Mission Impossibles! Thank you for the respite CC and thanks for the shout out at 45A.
When it comes to Frankie Avalon, D-O and I are on opposite sides of the street. Oh well, I still look forward to his daily posts and occasional puzzle constructing.
Learning moments of the day: SPEEDO & PRISS. (I too began with prude.)
Enjoy your cookouts.
Another alternate site: webcrosswords.com. It doesn't load as quickly as the Mensa site (at least on my old computer) but the interface is the same (which, if I recall correctly, is not true of all alternate sites).
ReplyDeleteFun puzzle, CC and interesting expo, Argyle. Nice to have an easy one after the difficult Sat an Sun ones. I found most of Sunday's puzzle easy, but a swath down the west coast was very difficult.
ReplyDeleteDEDE was the only unknown today, although perpable.
Thank you all for your concern about Alan. Yesterday my next door neighbor took me to visit him. Although he was very sleepy and weak, he talked some and moved around in the bed a little. He seemed more with it, but he still is very weak and can’t walk or swallow. They are giving him general antibiotics. After the blood cultures have time to grow, which will take several days, they will find more specific antibiotics to give him. Things seem to be looking up.
Gary, I am glad you are on track for the reconnection. I hope all goes well.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteYR, that is encouraging news about Alan. Please know you are both in our thoughts and prayers. Hang in there!
What a meaningful tribute on this revered and somber day of recollection. Thank you, CC, and Argyle for starting the week off on this note.
Have a great day.
Thanks for the great puzzle with such a meaningful theme, C.C., and the great links, Argyle.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite clue today was "hound hotel"!
I tried PRIGS for priss, but perps fixed that.
We put flowers on the grave of my husband's uncle, who died in WWII. A cousin took a picture and posted it, and darned if the ND and hasn't knocked them sideways! Better get out there before the Memorial Day program.
Have a good weekend, all. and thank a veteran!
Thanks for the great puzzle with such a meaningful theme, C.C., and the great links, Argyle.

What a wonderful Memorial Day tribute, C.C.! My flag is flying at half staff until noon today, in honor of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
ReplyDeleteNow to go out and enjoy that deck...
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteHappy MEMORIAL DAY.
Perfect fun puzzle for today. Thanks C.C. and Argyle (6mo NAG gag cracked me up).
Hiccups: w/ Love in 21a's clue I thought 43a couldn't be I LOVE LA, but it was. I ENlisted before ENROLLing and GLitz b/f GLEAM.
C.C. & JzB explained the lag in puzzle-time, so I know C.C. didn't put 5d in the puzzle just to prove me wrong re: "there's no triple-U" from two weeks ago. 'Tis the WURST way to learn :-)
Favs - AYES & EYES, Pi r squared (no, pie are round!), KGB above EVIL and the non-*'d homage to the Marines w/ TRIPOLI.
To my Brothers in Arms - Salute!
Cheers, -T
Hi gang -
ReplyDeleteNice, simple solve, perfect for a Monday, and especially perfect for today, with a couple memorials I didn't know about.
Excellent construction with no clunkers, and some sparkling fill. Really well done C. C.
Looked like rain here, and a few drops fell, but now the sun is out. If you don't like Michigan weather, wait a minute.
Got some yard work to do. Royals on at 1:00, Tigers at 4:00, Eastern.
Thinking about all our fallen veterans just makes me kind of sad.
Cool regards!
JzB
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteNice romp through the tulips this morning. Mostly a top to bottom solve. Couple unknowns like ENO and DEDE came from solid perps. Liked how USA USA crossed NAG NAG.
Nice apt theme today. MEMORIAL DAY was first observed at Waterloo, NY, about 100 miles west of here. In the earlier years it was called Decoration Day from the practice of decorating the graves of the war dead.
I'm presently reading the Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant; written as he was suffering through his terminal illness of throat cancer at Mt. McGregor near Saratoga.
Hi Y'all! Hope you are all having a lovely Memorial Day. The sun is finally shining here after a soggy week of gloom. I had no luck at all getting an on-line puzzle cite to let me on. I'll try again tomorrow. My newspaper carrier left me a paper, however, so I was able to do C.C.'s delightful puzzle. I'm only supposed to get a newspaper on Sunday and on-line the rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I failed to put a "T" in the RTS/TRIPOLI cross. DUH!
YR: very good news about Alan. I looked for your posting yesterday to see how he was and was worried.
As a married woman, I had my own set of tools which I called my "anti-NAG kit". I used them often. One of my favorite shower gifts to give prospective brides was a set of hand tools with a note calling it an anti-nag kit. Always got a laugh from the older women. The bride usually couldn't figure out why I gave them tools until they went to hang pictures in their new home and the husband hadn't come with a tool kit. I sent my oldest daughter off to college with a tool kit and she was the most popular girl on the floor of her dorm -- no one else had a hammer or pliers or screw driver.
Thanks for great expo, Argyle.
Nice applicable theme for today and a pretty smooth solve. Thank you C.C.
ReplyDeleteArgyle - loved your comment on NAG NAG. Yes, once every six months is not enough!
Hello, friends!
ReplyDeleteThank you, C.C., for an appropriate MEMORIAL DAY puzzle! It was a fast and easy sashay along the grid. No problems with PRISS; I just let it work itself out. However, had NEET before NAIR.
Loved KENNEL and baby blues, EYES.
Thank you to all who serve, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice!
YR:
My prayers go out for ALan and you. I'm glad to hear he's improving.
Have a memorable day, everyone!
Marched right through this one on a sunny MEMORIAL DAY.
ReplyDeleteWEES bout the relief felt after this weekend's brain freezers.
I loved the reference that a PINTO was the type of horse that Little Joe rode. For those who don't know, this refers to the youngest son of Ben Cartwright, patriarch on the Ponderosa, which was the ranch on the show "Bonanza". IMO, the best western ever broadcast on TV. Better than "Gunsmoke".
Just read that Anne Meara died. Wife to comedian/actor Jerry Stiller and mother of actor Ben and sister Amy. She was a funny, funny lady. Loved how she and Jerry were the Hollywood exception, and stayed married for 61 years. RIP.....
Sorry for more sad news, but John Nash and his wife were killed while riding in a N.J. cab from Newark Airport. Nash was a brilliant Nobel prize winning mathematician, who Russell Crowe played in "A Beautiful Mind". Fantastic film, fantastic but troubled man. Such a shame, and a cruel twist of fate. He changed his original plans, and arrived earlier.
For tennis fans: French Open....Think Nadal is going to come back from his slump and keep his French crown? Will his arch rival, #1 Djokovic, finally achieve his long sought after win? Stay tuned...
Three o`clock today is a moment of silence in memorandum. Please participate.
Until tomorrow then. Think happy thoughts.
I woke up this morning wondering if we might get a C.C. Monday puzzle--and Voila! Opened the paper and there it was! But I wasn't expecting a Memorial Day theme, which was an especially lovely surprise! Many thanks, C.C. for a great puzzle, and thanks, Argyle, for write-up and pics. Loved the "nag, nag" commentary.
ReplyDeleteYellowrocks, so glad you got to see Alan and that he's improving. My thoughts and prayers will be with him this week.
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone!
My very favorite 'nag, nag' song. I could see Stiller and Meara doing this as a bit.
ReplyDeleteThe Bucket Song
Hi all, you can get the daily, Sunday and the Merl Reagle Sunday on the LA Times website.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy all the comments and have learned so much from all of you about solving crosswords. Happy Memorial Day.
http://games.latimes.com/games/daily-crossword/
I remember "NAG, NAG, NAG" uttered by Clint Eastwood. I'd thought he said it to Tyne Daly as Harry Callahan but Google proved me wrong. It was from the movie 'The Gauntlet' and he said it to Sondra Locke.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't find the video so...
Gus Mally(Locke): Ben Shockley don't you die on me Open those F@*cking eyes
[Shockley rolls his eyes and opens them]
Ben Shockley(Eastwood): Nag, Nag, Nag!
Argyle - I HADNT heard any other song from the Banana Boat guy. That was funny and shows that arguing about it takes longer than just doing it. Dad and I joke about the button on our bum that alerts respective DWs we're sitting down.
ReplyDeleteThe song also includes whet-stone which I thought was wet-stone until x-words. Now I know... and have to pronouce the H /ducking... ;-)
C, -T
"I don't think you like my new KIMONO"
ReplyDelete"NO, I'M OK with it"
An A+ to C.C. for a lovely and timely puzzle!
ReplyDeleteMusings
-Can Spieth, McDonald or anyone else ever be the next Tiger?
-Eiffel designed locks for the Panama Canal but was accused of financial misdeeds and fined and given a jail sentence (later suspended)
-Interesting data table about NEW car depreciation
-We all tried to ENROLL in the classes with easy prof’s ASAP
-OLD, RELIC? Were you thinking of me C.C.? ;-)
-Fewer people have to LIVE A LIE in this more enlightened time
-This PAN FRIED lunch over a Saskatchewan camp fire may be the best meal I ever had.
-I have some medical issues, YR, but really feel for you and Alan! I hope everything gets better from here.
-Well, I’m off to do some work Joann has been, uh, persistently reminding me to do.
Nice puzzle. Thanks, C.C.
ReplyDeleteJerome - cute. When I got to KIMONO I thought about this. (warning profanity laden). If you just want the pic of KIMONO. Yes, I'm still wearing my Rush concert T and, yes, I know I'm an OLD geek.
ReplyDeleteGirls & I went to Michaels for poster board and $20(???) acrylic paint, ATM and HEB (grocery). Beautiful RAW T-bones are dry-rub'd w/ Omaha Steak spice (have you tried that?); I've got garlic cloves in olive Oyl (^H^H^H oil (old-school UNDO)) and oiled-salted potatoes wrapped in foil. Quick nap and then yummmo.
MAMA'S out-o'-luck; she's at a conference in Austin (who does that on MEMORIAL DAY? Not a NEAT IDEA).
Cheers, -T
Ork, how about solving ISIS and world hunger?
ReplyDeleteC.C. your puzzle was wonderful, timely and we thank you for all you have done not only with the Corner but as an inspiration
Thanks, C.C., For a lovely, appropriate Memorial Day puzzle! What fun to solve it.
ReplyDeleteAnd the write - up was spot-on!
Good day all around. Thanks!
Not too many of us here today. I arrived home only yesterday afternoon after 16 days away on a tour of China. What a wonderful experience! C.C., whose timely and appropriate CW today was a welcome easy return after the break away and jet lag, had warned me of a few things like paperless public toilets, so there were no nasty surprises.
ReplyDeleteInstead we were constantly pleasantly surprised and amazed. We'd hoped to lose some weight with all the energy consumed on the ambitious itinerary, but they fed us too well for that, and I returned home with all too much of myself still intact!
A few photos will be forthcoming after I sift the 700 or so remaining after the first edit.
C.C.,
Thanks again for your good advice!
Welcome back kazie!
ReplyDelete2x Wow - I'm HERE to INFORM you the Rockets beat Golden State (we're still in it baby!) and I'm watchin' one heck of a storm. We've musta' had 5" by now and it just keeps coming. The light show is amazing.
Your Ark done D-O? I'm gathering FARM animals (no mosquitoes this time)...
Cheers, -T
