I don't want to build a life and career, where I spent five days a week waiting for the weekend. No!

I want to enjoy my life, and don't wish any weekday away. I want each day to matter to me, in some way, even if it's a small tiny way.

  1. Greetings!

    Thanks, Janice and mb!

Nice puzzle. No problems. Interesting factoid about fire.

    Nothing new here.

  2. Hi Melissa! I thought your description of Janice Lutrell's puzzle was hilarious; informative too. We have tickets this upcoming Sunday afternoon for the world premiere of an opera based on Stephen King's "The Shining," at the Ordway Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Based on information given to me by C.C., I now know whose puzzle I'll be solving that morning.

  3. Filled, no ta-da, but found the errors easily just by reviewing entries, so no reds, no lookies.
Needed the reveal to get the theme. CASUAL FRIDAY had been considered when I tried to figure it out, but GOOD FRIDAY and MAN FRIDAY didn't come to mind, and I had discarded that idea by the time I got to BLACK FRIDAY.

THANK GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY, he said with relief!
His work-a-day world close to brought him to GRIEF!
    None working nor shopping
Meant his job was stopping --
Weekends are ME-TIME for this cat-burgling thief!

We all know that R. Caruso was tidy
Since he got his work finished by FRIDAY.
    Christmas shopping was done
    In November, BY GUM,
Since he had that, too, done by BLACK FRIDAY!

  4. Morning, all!

A couple of missteps kept this from being a speed run (GALA before BASH and LASORTA before LARUSSA), but not too bad overall. I didn't guess the theme until I got to the reveal, but getting the reveal did help me go back and fill in some blanks, so that was nice.

  5. Starting with GALA didn't help. Spelling ADES as AIDS (for some reason; wake up brain!!) didn't help either. And LAROUSA turned to LAROSSA and finally LARUSSA. Eventually got 'er done, but not in a timely manner. Still, fun CW, thanx, Janice! And very nice write-up, thanx, MB!! I remember very well the terrific video, too, hard to believe it is that long ago. Oi. Owen, you're off your feed a bit today with the limericks, I'll give 'em a c, c, c. Still enjoyed 'em, though, and still far better than I could manage.

  6. Good morning!

Hand up for GALA once AMORE and ATE (oops!) were in place. Nicely done, Janice, and good to see you, MelissaBee.

So the Hall of Fame needs a manager, and his name is LARUSSA. Who knew?

BRAE reminds me that I used to live on Braewick drive. With my mastery of Scottish, I assumed a BRAE must be a candle.

BY GUM evokes memories of Walter Brennan repeatedly saying "By Gob!" in some old-timey movie. Does anyone here remember just what movie that could have been? I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Enjoyable Tuesday run about Fridays. I was going to try to figure out what the movie with Walter Brennan where he said "By gob" - the first thing Google brings up, D-O, is when you made the same comment on the blog for BYGUM for a October 4, 2015 puzzle by Amy Johnson. Gave me my morning chuckle - now that is consistency! LARUSSA was a gimme as I live in Cardinal Country. WEES about GALA for BASH.

Enjoyed your write-up Melissa ( though I thought we might have a little morning LET IT BE or SOLTI instead of SLEDGE hammer :)) )
    and the puzzle Janice!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thank you Janice and Melissa.

Hand up for gAla, which turned into BAll, and then to BASH. Not quite a word ladder.

Desper-otto, funny you should mention that, because I had written, "Didn't Walter Brennan say "BY GUM" or "dadgummit" or something like that ?"

I keep thinking it was a movie he was in with John Wayne and Patrick Wayne or Dean Martin where he played the aged deputy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. TTP, I believe that movie is "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky nelson, Walter Brennan, John Russell, Claude Aikens, etc. Supposedly a classic, but too long, too far-fetched, and too much singing for me. Can't say I didn't enjoy it though. Sometimes the companionship trumps the quality of the movie. Don't remember a catchphrase from Walter Brennan but there may have been one.

Working on the cheater risotto recipe. Will email CC.

  10. That was a real quickie for me today.never saw a theme,so thanks Melissa for the enlightenment. Loved the quote you added . Life is too short not to enjoy each and every day.

  11. I'm sitting here waiting for the John Moore (Call John and get Moore!) guy to come and unclog a drain. Tom Lehrer had an appropriate uplifting quote: "Life is like a sewer. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it." I'm hoping to be able to put something into it later today.

  12. Nice workout for a rainy day here. Thanks, Jance, for a fun puzzle with some interesting fill. BY GUM is sure an oldie. I always choose the wrong way to spell REATA on my first fun through. The dry weather before the Chicago Fire was quite a culprit--even worse for Pestigo WI, about 200 miles east of EAU CLAIRE. There was more loss of life in Pestigo than Chicago. I think the Chicago Fire is still the reason a fire will lead the news here. It's also the reason for all the brick homes--a shock to my husband's New England family when they visit.

Thanks for a delightful tour, Melissa. Great links. I especially like the photo of the RUTS on the Oregon Trail.

Have a pleasant day--sun or not where you are.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good morning everyone.

A little fast out of the chute this morning. Plunked down 'gala' and had to white it out and enter BASH. Every thing else went smoothly; slicker than snot on a doorknob. No searches were needed.
MAN OVERBOARD - When reminded of it, I can't help but remember an 18 yr. old Fireman of our ship's crew who was swept over the side and lost to a very choppy rough sea as we neared Ambrose Light approaching New York for a few days R & R. The date was 17 March, 1960. I did not know him personally but will not forget his name. (Sorry if this seems maudlin.)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Melissa bee: Excellent write-up and links. Good Job!

Janice: Thank You for a FUN Tuesday puzzle. Really enjoyed the TGIF theme.

OK, I admit this was solved in about Thursday time.

Needed ESP to spell ANKH correctly ... again.

Faves today were SKI-BUM and RED-RUM.

    Cheers!

  15. Good Morning:

Another pleasant offering from JL. Hand up for gala/bash and Lasorda/LaRusso; other than that, smooth sailing. Cute theme which needed the reveal but didn't affect the solve at all.

Thank you, Janice, for a Tuesday treat and thank you, Melissa B, for a fun and informative expo.

Spitz, what a terrible memory that must be. So sorry.

The ending quote reminds me of my mother's adminition every time I would say something like "Oh, I can't wait for summer" or "I wish Christmas would hurry up and come": "Stop wishing your life away!" Whoever said "Youth is wasted on the young" was certainly a wise person.

Was any other fan of The Good Wife disappointed in the finale? I certainly was.

    Have a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  16. HI ALL

This went more quickly for me than yesterday, though I also started with GALA.

Tommy LASORDA bled only Dodger Blue after spending more than 50 years with that organization.

The only Walter Brennan catch phrase I recall was NO BRAG, JUST FACT .

    THanks Janice and ARGYLE

  17. I stopped watching The Good Wife a while back, so no comment but I was very underwhelmed by Sunday's GOT.

    Go Steph Curry

  18. My experience today was pretty much what everyone else said. Enjoyable solve and I liked MB's explanation. I didn't get the Friday significance until she explained it.

Like Madame Defarge, I liked the picture of the RUTS. On a tour of western National Parks a few years ago we stopped to look at the RUTS. It was just a little side trip because we were ahead of our schedule. It was interesting to see and I wondered how many wagons and years that it took to wear down the stone to get grooves that deep. Also it appeared to me that the pioneers could have gone around the hill rather than go up over it. But I wasn't there at the time and they must have had a reason.

I think I'd rather be a Beach Bum than a Ski Bum. Too many clothes required.

Have a great day and I hope your weather is better than it is here.

    ReplyDelete
  19. WHEE! I sailed through this and withheld filling GALA until being sure of the perps then AMORE/SCOUT confirmed BASH. However, SHIP seemed more fitting for lanyards but, no, it was at CAMP.

After that it was across/down to the finish. LARUSSA required every perp.

Thank you, Melissa; it's good to see you again! And thank you, Janice, for a quick workout today.

    Have a terrific day, everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Irish Miss, I agree. The finale for The Good Wife was very underwhelming , although they probably wanted us to make up our own scenario. Humbug! Wonder what the summer replacement will be.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Some nice new ways of cluing some familiar words today. Cool puzzle. Hand up for entering GALA and ATE and then having to change them. Didn't get the theme until getting the reveal and thinking about it for 10 seconds.
There is a town between here and San Francisco called Millbrae.
I didn't like the Good Wife finale either.
Good to see you, melissa, and thanks for the quote by Akilnathan Logeswaran. Cool ruts!
    Best wishes to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hello Puzzlers -

What Jayce said. Hello, MBee, thanks for 'splaining! Loved the links, and hand up for the wagon ruts.

Until today I hadn't gotten that annoying robocall some have mentioned, the one in which an accented guy warns you you're in trouble with the IRS. Has anyone learned what the actual scam is? I assume they're trying to harvest "fines" that stave off legal action.

    ReplyDelete
  23. EAU Clair - I think that's close to Kazie's bailiwick.

Good Wife - I agree with the other comments. After it ended, It seemed like the writers really had no idea about how to end it, and were just filling up air time. I did like the cameo appearance of David Boies but wished he had more lines.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bluehen,
You are correct. Rio Bravo is the movie I was thinking of.

Dudley, take a look at IRS Warns of Continued Scams

  25. RE: The Good Wife
Ditto on the ending. It was certainly incomplete and unsatisfying.

Madam Secretary, OTH, left me quizzical and excited. Will it be renamed to fit the position?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, I recorded The Good Wife finale, one of my favorite shows, and now I find I'm apparently going to be disappointed. I would have preferred things wrapped up in a fairly neat, relatively happy bundle. What's up with the producers and writers? I'm guessing that's what most people would have preferred. (I hate cliffhangers too.)

Downton Abbey had a good ending. Friday Night Lights had a good ending. Boston Legal had a good ending. Rats...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, that GALA beginning got this puzzle off to a bit of a tough Tuesday start, especially since ATE and YMCA weren't going to work together. But the bottom filled in pretty quickly and in the end I did get the whole thing, thank goodness. So many thanks, Janice, and you, too, Melissa, for the fun expo.

I've never watched "The Good Wife," but was intrigued that there were two articles about the ending in the Calendar section of the LA Times this morning, with the television critic concluding "As it is, Alicia Florrick's final hour will no doubt leave many fans angry and outraged while others will feel some sort of closure."

So you're not alone, blog watchers!

    Have a good Tuesday, everybody!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Some unknowns for me (EAU, BRAE, REATA, SOLTI), but managed to get through with perps. Had never heard of MAN FRIDAY, but I already had MAN OVERBOARD by the time I made it to TGIF, so it didn't much matter.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. JD @ 11:34 - I don't hold out much hope for a decent summer replacement for TGW. I don't think a Sunday night 9:00 o'clock time slot in the summer months is that successful and summer replacements are hit or miss as far as quality and appeal. Of course, that's my personal opinion and I'm sure there have been exceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Y'all! Thanks, Janice & melissa!

Just to be different I started out with FETE before bash. But with only _YG___, I got BY GUM! My dad used to say that.

I had a GOod guy before GOTO. Never remember APIA, Samoa.

Took ESP to get SOLTI & LARUSSA.

For some dumb reason I tried AUE before EAU Claire. Knew better.

Didn't see "The Shining" no idea what that was.

Glad to hear the truth about the O'Leary's & fire in Chicago. I always wondered who would put a lantern low enough for a cow to kick it. High-steppers, they're not.

Wouldn't you hate to be in a wagon going down that rut incline? I'd get out and walk, I think. OC4Beach, I bet many did go around and the ruts have filled in.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, GALA and FETE would have worked, and so would BALL and even FUSS. But perps popped in immediately to rescue most of us. I try to make it a habit of not starting a pzl, not inking anything in, until I am sure I'm covered in two directions, preferably three. With that in mind, my first entry today was OAF - triangulated from the ends of GO TO, APIA, and GOOD GRIEF. Confidence rose as soon as I saw it was a familiar Xwd answer.
That this kind of mental processing occurs inside a split second fascinates me. I enjoy observing how the brain (well, mine, at least) responds to these challenges. I can't yet tell why sometimes the answers come after a dogged and dutifully logical pursuit, while at other times they're grokked in some kind of holistic flash. And of course there are times when they don't come at all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. TTP - that pretty well confirms my suspicion. I'm sorry that there are people naive enough to get swept up in these schemes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Misty, how did your lecture go yesterday?
As for Madame Secretary, there's an ad touting a new show by the same creators, called Brain Dead. We'll see.
Ol' Man Keith, I agree the brain is an amazing thing. I also sometimes wonder how it is that I can get something so quickly sometimes and am so dense at other times and in other circumstances.
Lemonade, what the heck is GOT?

  34. Three ladies were discussing the travails of getting older.

One said, "Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand while standing in front of the refrigerator, and I can't remember whether I need to put it away or start making a sandwich."

The second lady chimed in with, "Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can't remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down."

The third one responded, "Well, ladies, I'm glad I don't have those problems. Knock on wood," as she rapped her knuckles on the table. And then she suddenly said, "That must be the door, I'll get it!"

My condolences Spitzboov. Man overboard must be a chilling announcement. Here is a VIDEO that appeared a
on another blog I follow. Would there have been a announcement as to this incident? What do you think went wrong. I read a comment that it had to be poor maintenance of the anchor brake. Must've been over 1000 tons of steel heading to the bottom!

Also Saw this devastating picture of Lincoln NE

Funny how certain news items hit closer to home because of this blog...

  39. Bill G @ 4:46 - Thanks for a good laugh-out-loud rib tickler. It far surpassed the minor chuckle I got upon reading the email from the United Nations awarding me $1,500.000.00 from some so-called poverty reparations fund. Funny, I didn't know I was poor! 🙃

Jayce @ 4:34 - Brain Dead is from the creators of The Good Wife and is being touted as a comic thriller. Sounds oxymoronic to me and I think it throws in a little Sci-Fi, as well. Not my cup of tea. ☕️

As far as the finale of TGW, I'd like to state my feelings about why I was disappointed, but I don't want to spoil it for Bill G or anyone else who hasn't watched it yet. Let me know when it's safe to speak out, okay? 🙊

Hope the Plains people are not in the path of those terrible tornadoes. (Is it os or oes?)

Spitz, Just exactly what does a fireman on your boat do?
18 years old, Dang! In memory, can you tell us his name...

PK, The Shining was a horror movie, pure & simple, except...
Steven King is the King of Horror stories...
+ Stanley Kubrick makes movies that make you think...
Put the two together, & you get one hell of a ride...

Hmm, that rut pic makes me wonder how there is no rock jutting up from between the wheels.

  42. Wanted Gala to start, with 2 and 4 down proving it. But like Keith, I waited. And with YMCA being a gimme, that idea went out and waited for more proof. And so it went. Fun puzzle, where the reveal was needed to get the theme. Thank you Janice, and Melissa B.

Last night was nothing short of interesting in these parts, but not overly damaging. The worst damage is from hail, and the tornadoes were pretty mild. No structures lost and no one hurt very badly. I happened to be about a mile from the storm late afternoon, and saw the clouds swirling as it was getting its act together. I beat feet out of there, and did not see the funnel, but my direction home was away from it all, so no real danger. The sirens went off 3 separate times, but it didn't prove all that bad. Even got a double rainbow just before sunset as a bonus.

Thanks Janice for a GOOD puzzle w/o GRIEF. Thanks MB for the fun writeup and SLEDGEhammer; love that song.

-PREY – I can’t even shoot the annoying starlings in our backyard
-She has a very attractive SKI BUM

-I’ve been called DUDE but never CHIC
