Argyle
Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteThanks to Roger and Kathy and Santa!
Amusing puzzle. Didn't know CSNY and NASD. Filled in nicely though.
Really hot here!
Do you folks take anything for allergies? I have 2 air cleaners in my room. Didn't abate the problem, however.
Am learning lots of weird words playing Word Solitaire. Beat the computer at Scrabble today.
Have a great day!
More than you need to know.
ReplyDeleteFIR, but erased old for AGE, and fixed CARPeL. Didn't know NASD or ERGOT, but did know CSN and, oh yeah, Y. Are we going to have another WAR about the meaning of SIEGE?
ReplyDeleteI'm teaching project management for the next three days, so I may not be able to check in until Friday. Depends on how well my decaf gets me moving.
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Roger, Cathy and Argyle. I enjoyed the outing and even managed to get the theme.
SCRIBE used to be a boy scout "rank" -- maybe still is. That's as far as I got.
"Give all thou CANST" -- sounds suspiciously like a TV evangelist. "And then give some more."
Anybody else try "DAmNED?"
The cluing for INDULGE ME seemed off to me. Minor nit.
fermatprime, have you tried CLARITIN to relieve allergy symptoms?
ReplyDeleteIn this case, I think "prolonged" makes the clue for SIEGE correct, or at least defensible.
ReplyDeleteMorning All,
Smooth offering from Roger & cathy. 11D my only issue. Entered Head Light initially, but the across fills brought LAMPS into the fold. No other slow downs and as is the norm, no circles.
Even though he is the best golfer I've ever seen, I was never a Tiger fan. This "seeking help" for his RX meds sounds suspicious to me. Whatever is going on, I hope he straightens out and gets back on the tour. Then so I'll have someone to root against.
Good Morning,
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy and Roger for a nice ease into the rest of the week. I thought this was a bit easier than yesterday, but I was lucky with the long fills. I saw the circles in the newspaper--yep, we still subscribe to a hard copy--however, I did the puzzle on the Mensa site so I didn't use them. Nicely done on the theme. Favorite was CANST; I love Wordsworth. Totally off on NASD as I was searching my brain recesses for some alphabet agency controlling the pharmacy counter. Ha!
Thanks for the welcome back. All is well, and I am back in control of my own logistics. ;-) So nice to return to your most pleasurable company.
Have a sunny day. Although, those cumulus clouds that have been preceding some afternoon storms have been beautiful. I've taught the Blond Tornado how to find all sorts of objects and characters in the clouds. So much fun! No electronics required!
Musings
ReplyDelete-A fun theme that turned a nice puzzle into a cakewalk
-When the others wore ASCOTS at ASCOT, he of course did not
-At golf league today, some groups will CEDE putts others will not
-Movie buffs will know who sold this OLIVE OIL
-I benevolently CASED the last school where I worked before signing
-Modern variation on DIDN’T
-Jesus seemed to have issues with SCRIBES and Pharisees
-I wonder if Boomer has ever picked up a 7 – 10 SPLIT
-FORE!
The circles made the theme obvious from the start allowing me a quick run-through. Easier than yesterday's. It should have been a Monday puzzle. I didn't remember NASD and so it was all perps. Most fill was the first answer that occurred to me.
ReplyDeleteBillocoes, I agree with you about siege.
We had a discussion of INDULGE ME before. Indulge can mean pamper, yield to he wishes of. I often hear it in the context of, "This might be asking too much, but...." or "It is just a whim of mine, so please do me the favor." It seems to be said mostly to close friends and family.
Last night we had our annual biggest square dance special event of the year. Half the attendees dressed as a movie star, animal or toon movie character. They proceeded down the red carpet and were judged as best in category with Oscar statuettes presented. The male caller dressed as a lovely, believable Barbra Streisand and sang beautifully. Afterward we square danced. A thunder storm knocked out the electricity in our venue at 6:00 PM. I received the message it was restored while I was on the way there. Whew! The dancer who was to manage the event begged off at 6:00 PM due to her father's illness and I had to fill in. A wild, but successful and fun event.
Good morning all
ReplyDeleteNice, easy straightforward offering from Roger and Kathy with no problems but still found it to be cleverly clued; loved the long spanners.
Thanks for a nice tour, Argyle!
NASD was my only unknown but filled easily via perps.
I had (another) lumbar epidural injection yesterday. Hopefully it works as well as the series I had a year ago. I need to schedule the second one- they usually do that while I'm there but this was a different facility than where I usually go to with this doctor, so maybe that's why. The nurse said their systems don't "mesh". Not much relief yet but it can take a couple of days. However, I'm experiencing the side effects of the steroid which are never fun but usually worth the hassle.
Another beautiful day here- low humidity, sunny blue sky and not too hot. Perfect summer day! Hope it's nice where you are :)
Irish Miss- I resent my original email but forwarded it to you through my fuse.net address since gmail didn't seem to be sending it. Hopefully the third time's a charm! ;)
Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Hondo; smooth offering. No issues with the solve. Once I saw W I D E repeat in the circles of the first 2 rows having circles, I went and filled in the remaining circles, thus getting an easy assist. Liked seeing the 9-letter downs.
Good morning.
ReplyDeleteReally late for me. Solving computer problems all morning. Had to boot into Safe Mode to get rid of an annoying problem, and then couldn't get out of Safe Mode. Small annoying problem turned into a big troublesome problem. Finally got it.
Swift solve here though. No problems. Didn't have circles and didn't open at the LA Times site to see them.
Welcome back Madame DeFarge.
Hope you get some relief Bunny M.
Husker Gary, we have a "No Gimmes" rule in our league. Putt it out. We still have players concede the putt.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteNice to see Roger and Kathy again. (The couple that puzzles together, nuzzles together!) This was a straightforward Tuesday with an easily discernible theme but fun nonetheless. I missed seeing NASD so perps must have had it already filled in. Red, white and blue was my favorite theme answer, but they were all solid entries.
Nice job, Roger and Kathy, and ditto to Argyle.
Michael from yesterday: It's nice to know I'm not the only one longing for those "old-timey" tastes and flavors. I haven't had 7-Up in years and, based on your critique, probably will never have it again. I envy your access to good tomatoes!
BunnyM ~ I hope you get some relief soon, I missed your posts the last several days. Still have not received your email, Try sending it to dagnesd45@aol.com.
My poor choices with Netflix continue. I watched one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life last night. In my defense, the description of the plot on the sleeve was completely different than what I watched and the movie was almost over before the ridiculous, unbelievable "real" plot was evident. Why Naomi Watts chose to be a part of this, is beyond me.
Have to run-have a haircut appointment
.
Have a great day.
Good morning, folks. Thank you, Roger and Kathy Wienberg, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am finally back. Had a busy week in Detroit last week. Could not get to a crossword puzzle due to no WIFI. One night I walked up to some businesses in Livonia, MI, where we were staying, and went through their parking lots until I found a WIFI signal that needed no password. It was a pizzeria. I logged on to cruciverb.com via my iPad and downloaded Monday's puzzle. Then I walked back to the church and worked it. But then I could not get to the Blog. The rest off the week we so busy I had no time to be creative.
We went to a Tigers Game on Tuesday. They lost 7-6, but it was a good game for a while. Nice Ball Park. I had a couple $10.50 beers. On Wednesday night we rode these 12 person bikes in Detroit. That was fun. Of course during the day we worked hard in the Redford neighborhood of Detroit. It was hot all week.
Today's puzzle was quite easy.
I wrote in SPARE for 38D. SPLIT won that battle. My only inkblot.
Clever theme.
Could not remember LAILA without a couple perps.
NASD was new to me. Perped it.
DODOS again. We just had that.
Lots to do. See you tomorrow. We are having our Annual Commandery Steak Fry tomorrow and I have to go buy all the food tonight. Busy Busy.
Abejo
( )
Easy but very clever, I thought. What could be better for a Tuesday. Thanks, Roger and Kathy and Argyle.
ReplyDeleteThere is a tropical almost-storm in the Gulf headed this way. We've had some rain and wind, but so far so good. Bad weather is supposed to last through Thursday . I am always amused when they predict "100%" chance of rain. Oh well......
Hi Y'all! No circles but hand up for seeing the WIDE SPREAD easily after the reveal. Thanks, Wienbergs! Thanks, Argyle!
ReplyDeleteHand up for thinking it was easier than yesterday. Maybe the circles made it a Tuesday? Didn't know NASD or CSNY and tried to spell LHASA with a double LL like LLama.
Fermatprime, I've taken Claritin D (for decongestent) almost daily since last pneumonia bout several years ago.
Hondo: I was never a Tiger fan either. Rehab won't help a case of "spoiled bratism". I think golf tournaments have been more exciting without him. Now we never know who will win beforehand.
Bunny: good luck with the epidural.
Further, for Irish Miss:
ReplyDeleteA quote from John Ruskin:
"There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey."
Bunny: have you tried acupuncture? It will help.
ReplyDeleteWEES. Easy run today and liked the W-I-D-E SPREAD theme. I hear your warning, Argyle.
ReplyDeleteLike others, HASD was unfamiliar and I also had to change CARPeL to CARPAL. So many people I know suffer from that condition.
Yesterday the News reported on the 50th anniversary of the Monterey Festival that introduced so many singers and groups as did Woodstock.
fermatprime:
I take Stinging Nettle for allergies. Two tablets a day keeps me dry and free from wheezing and sneezing. It's available on line from Vitacost.
Have a beautiful day, everyone! WARM wishes from AZ.
Smooth sailing today. Thanks for the fun Roger and Kathy, and Argyle.
ReplyDeleteNewspaper had arrived and I had the circles so I was soon Abe to fill in the WIDEs.
I had decided to try Jayce's variation of moving from NW to SE and things filled in well (including NASD which I would never have gotten without perps as I too was misdirected to drugs).
I did know CSNY!
I saw CSOs to Boomer at 36 D, Spitzboov at 32D, and of course at the ALE for Tin. (we had ADE but it was clued as Orange not Lemon).
I also smiled at the cross of TRIO and TWO.
Lots of RED and WHITE (no BLUE) here in Canada as July 1 sesquicentennial approaches. I'm undoubtedly too late to request a commemorative July 1 CW form C.C. and Rich.
YR, your evening sounded exciting. Good that you were able to fill in and that the power came back on.
Welcome back Abejo.
Hope you feel better soon Bunny M.
Beautiful day here. Off to do some late spring cleaning.
Michael @ 12:24 ~ Most of today's food products are inferior but they are definitely not cheaper and, in some instances, the prices are higher but the net weight or volume is lower. From a personal standpoint, I absorbed my late husband's philosophy regarding spending: It's only money! If you want it and can afford it, buy it. The problem is finding quality meat, produce, etc. I can't remember the last time I saw American-raised lamb in the supermarket. Of course, I don't live in a metropolitan area, either, so that's probably a factor, too. If your son has a bumper crop of tomatoes and needs an outlet, keep me in mind! 🍅🍅🍅
ReplyDeleteMusings
ReplyDelete-I had a nice golf game today on a nice 90˚F day. Our neighbors that moved to Phoenix will be fighting 120˚F heat.
-Our league pretty much CEDE any putt within the length of a putter. Former governor Dave Heineman will concede any putt within 5’ or so
-Irish, I watched Mulholland Drive too
-Tiger was good for golf in that people tuned in to cheer for or against him. Ratings plunged after his wife whacked him with a 9-iron a few Thanksgivings ago and his game went south
-Bunny, when you wrote, “I resent my original email”, I wondered what you had regretted sending.
-Oh, that’s how you do it! (:16)
-The months long SIEGE or Vicksburg gave the Union control of the Mississippi river and the one at Petersburg essentially ended the war
WELL I'LL BE DARNED!
ReplyDeleteAutocorrect has taken over my last post.
It should be Able not Abe in line 2 and from not form in line 10.
I should never post with our rereading!
A nicely wide-spread puzzle today. Wasn't bed spread a recent puzzle answer? Good to read all your comments.
ReplyDeleteHusker, I had the same exact thought about Bunny's original email.
ReplyDeleteCanadianEh!, I enjoyed with our rereading.
Heard on NPR today that American has cancelled about 50 flights out of Sky Harbor in Phoenix today. The Bombardier CRJ airplanes can't take off in temps higher than 118F. Planes from Boeing or Airbus aren't affected. Hot stuff!
Very easy puzzle with some difficult entries. Surprised myself by knowing ERGOT and not confusing it with "argot."
ReplyDeleteThx for hosting Jayce. I agree, easier than Monday. I never spotted the circles. I had ACAI before UGLI, ANEW cleared that up.
ReplyDeleteFor awhile, Tiger was just too good. Meds? I'd apply my fav Occam's razor: If you've ever taken an opiate without knowing exactly what you're doing the result is what Tiger experienced.
I said circa 1997 that the thing that might beat Tiger would be golf itself. I should have said life.
So, I was buying a banana at racetrack and I said " a banana a day keeps the cramps away". Cashier responded "I have a dog and a husband for that".
WC
PS. Thanks for the Wadsworth. Did you ever read "We are Seven"?
YR. What a great shindig you had. Boy what I could do with that in my Sitcom.
And thanks to Roger and Kathy. I saw the three long crosses and wanted to SALUTE*
*We had it last week I think
Argyle: Nice write-up.
ReplyDeleteRoger & Kathy: Thank you for a FUN Tuesday puzzle. Enjoyed the "W-I-D-E SPREAD" theme.
Fave today was 7-d, Ouzo flavoring, ANISE ... I'll probably pick up a bottle of Ouzo later.
(It is the "Official Drink" here in Tarpon Springs, FL).
A "Toast-to-ALL" at Sunset.
Cheers!
Sorry, but today is DW's birthday.
ReplyDeleteSo I haven't read anything..
(I did do the puzzle...)
Been busy helping Daughter #3 make a cake,
(think good eats meets, well you know...)
But most of my day has been trying to think of a segue
to the following link.
All I can say, is try your best to avoid formula 977...
And I really do enjoy an egg and onion sandwich!
HG @ 1:34 ~ The disaster I watched last night was "Shut In" which I highly recommend avoiding. I have heard of but have never seen "Mulholland Drive."
ReplyDeleteJayce @ 1:54 ~ You may be thinking of my and CC's recent puzzle, GO UNDER COVER, which had Blanket, Spread, and Sheet as part of theme answers with GO underneath them.
Tin, I feel about anise the same way you feel about _ _ _ !
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to italicize on an iPad?
Yes, Irish Miss, that's it. I was thinking of your and CC's recent puzzle.
ReplyDeleteIrish Miss, to italicize (as well as bold and underline) on the iPad, after you have typed something, select it and then press BIU.
ReplyDeleteJayce ~ Your instructions work in email but not on this comment section. When I press Select, there is no B/U choice, just Copy, Paste, Share, etc. Thanks for your help.
ReplyDeleteHG et al:
ReplyDeleteThe weather predictions for heat have not reached the extremes as yet. I believe 118 was yesterdays high and today's prognostication is for 119 which was registered in my car this afternoon. It's not too bad, really, unless one has to work outdoors for many hours. My granddaughter is out in the pool as I type.
IrishMiss:
I'm so sorry you dislike ANISE so much. I love the taste!
D-otto@2:26
ReplyDeleteLOL, I can't get a whole post with proper spelling today.
Re the Bombardier planes, this fellow Canadian won't work at those high temperatures either. We are more familiar with cold.
