I'll start with the unifier today.
54-Across. Pretend to be wealthy, in old slang ... and a hint to words that end answers to starred clues: PUT ON THE DOG.
According to a number of sources, the idiom Putting On the Dog is uniquely an American expression. It was first recorded in print in the early 1870s in a book entitled Four Years at Yale, and it means "to make a flashy display." It may derive from the popularity of lap dogs during the 1860s and 1870s. Because a lap dog was considered to be pampered, "putting on the dog" was a way of showing off.

Happy
Birthday to dear Tony (Anonymous-T), our generous and caring geek friend.
Tony wrote a program that eased up our blogging considerably.

ReplyDeleteGood morning Corner Writers.
Thank you Gail Grabowski & Bruce Venzke for this enjoyable Tuesday CW.
Thank you Hahtoolah for your excellent review. Wow!
Ðave
That is a really nice picture of Roger Federer Hahtoolah.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL got a mention without a PICTURE of its founder.
I am unfamiliar with SUNDOG as a phenomenon.
As to 27A, the pumps on the left are a scarlet and have a higher heel than the ones on the right.
Thanks GGBV and Hahtoolah.
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteSummer has definitely arrived here. Can't even get to the end of the driveway before starting to begin to commence to perspire. Every day is a 2- or 3-shirt day.
Yup, I tried THOU and also ENOW. I guess two Wite-Out moments on a Tuesday is OK. Didn't notice the dogs while solving, but went back and found 'em after the reveal. Thanx, GG, BV and Hahtoolah (I really like your blogging style).
Happy birthday, Tony!
FIR with no erasures. But I wanted to write "lies" for "like much testimony" before ORAL worked its way in. I dislike kerning. For a while I was trying to figure out why a "bam" bale was HAY. Happens all the time @ the LAT web site.
ReplyDeleteThe leaders of the People's Temple and the Branch Dividians got together to determine a way to encourage other religious people to form splinter groups. They issued their report entitled "The Joy of SECTs".
I know literalists can be annoying, but a bike for tykes just isn't a tricycle. Bi- means two; tri- means three. When we are young we have TRIKEs, then we outgrow them until we get old, then we get TRIKEs again. Kind of like diapers.
HBD to -T.
FLN, TTP sorry to hear about your bout with shingles. I have a golf buddy who got it and motivated me to get the vaccine the day I turned 60. (Insurance doesn't cover it before then.)
Thanks to Gail 'n Bruce for another terrific puzzle. And thanks to Hahtoolah for the fun tour an links. I know a lot of people who hate "Achy Breaky Heart", but I'm not one of them. And I REALLY loved the lap dog picture. Reminds me of the Irish Wolfhounds I had before I got too old for 180 pound dogs.
Rushing to get to work - but squeezed in time for another well constructed puzzle from Bruce & Gail!
ReplyDeleteThanks Hatoolah for the entertaining blog!
Happy birthday Tony!
Musings¬
ReplyDelete-Happy Birthday, Tony. Thanks from me as well about the blogging help!
-¬A fun G & B construction!
-Off to golf league. FORE!
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteEasy solve; no help needed. Interesting theme but I don't think I was acquainted with SUN DOG.
Hahtoolah - great intro - many fine visuals.
Thanks for remembering me @ STERN. The puzzle also had STEER which seems to be etymologically related to STERN.
HAY - 'Tis the season.
ERG - As an engineer, I never had to use it in my work. Always horsepower-hours or watt-hours. And BTU's.
HG - Are you going to trek out to the UP mainline to watch Big Boy (#4014) steaming towards Iowa in a couple days? I bet it'll be quite a sight.
Have a great day.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteA Tuesday G and B hits the spot! This was a fun and clever theme and extra enjoyable with the well hidden canines. I had Thou before Thee, also and noticed the Tutu ~ Toto duo, as well. Smooth sailing all the way. CSO to Anon T and DO with Stro.
Thanks, Gail and Bruce, for an easy and pleasant solve and thanks, Hatoolah, for the super-duper expo. Loved all of the visuals but my favorites were: the "Lap" dog, the "Dusty" hot dog, and the dog in the tutu! Thanks, also, for the explanation of Sun dog, a term I've never heard of.
Happy Birthday, Tony, hope your day is special. 🎂🎉🎈🎁🍾
FLN
TTP, so sorry you're in such pain and discomfort. Hope your ordeal is short-lived.
Have a great day.
Super fast fill today. Never caught the theme. Sun dog? New term for me.
ReplyDeleteMATING call- " Why don't you come up and see me some time"- that's a mating call.
STRO- I remember the Houston Colt 45s
GAZEBO or Pergola- know them both but have never heard of a 'summerhouse'
Spitzboov, as you well know an ERG is miniscule. Not much heat. but a DYNE if not much force either.
10,000,000 ergs= 1 joule
1055 joules/BTU
Easy and enjoyable run through today. Thanks Gail and Bruce. I got the reveal but never noticed the dogs.
ReplyDeleteHahtoolah you are wonderful! Loved the pictures. I’ve had POI only once (that was ENUF) and I thought the texture was like glue, Elmer’s School Glue. Yuk.
HBD Tony. Hope it’s fun.
I never thought I’d be glad to hear of a disturbance near the Gulf of Mexico, but our 100 degree temperatures have become debilitating. I can’t breathe! A nice little rain might be welcome.
God Morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gail and Bruce. Great puzzle. I did parse GETS HOT wrong. I like everything about it today.
Hahtoolah, Merci!! Another fine tour for us. Wonderful links and photos.
Happy Birthday, Tony! Add my thanks for all you do here. May your WIT never END! Have a great day.
TTP: Ouch! Feel better.
Seashells and balloons all around! (stolen from Al McGuire--B-Ball at Marquette)
D. Wade has convinced fellow Marquette alumnus Jimmy Butler to come and play for the Heat, Mme. DeFarge.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Tony and many thanks for all you do for the bloggers here, as well as the entertainment your comments provide.
Putting on the Dog?
ReplyDeleteHow do you find an Anonymous Birthday Cake
when you know the Guysname is Tony?
Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Gail and Bruce, and Hahtoolah.
ReplyDeleteThis CW was a straight-forward fill with plenty of CW favourites like ERG, DESI, DENS,LIMO, OGRES, MESAS, ORCA etc. But no Erie today.
I FIRed and saw the DOGS; just two inkblots to change Tryke to TRIKE, and Rotten to ROTTED.
I thought of Blow one's stack or even Blow one's gasket, but it was the shorter TOP. (In retrospect, neither stack nor gasket would have fit the Dog theme!)
I waited for perps to decide between THEE and Thou.
Just a FYI - that CAMO photo is SHOWIER if you enlarge.
Canadian TENNIS player, Milos Raonic has won 2 out of 9 matches vs. Nadal, and 3 out of 14 vs. Federer.
Re Hahtoolah's question about the difference between a Gazebo and a Pergola: a gazebo has a round or octagonal shape, while a pergola is square or rectangular. But the second photo is what I would call a pavilion, or sun shelter; I think of a pergola as having an open roof (lattice) design. If you Google, there are many different names for all these structures.
Happy Birthday, AnonT, our loveable "Nerdy sort=DORK"
Wishing you all a great day.
ACH, those Emojis for AnonT were supposed to be a birthday cake and hearts!
ReplyDeleteThere is no question about our birthday wishes.
ReplyDeleteThis Tuesday grid filled quickly with zero drama.
No markovers today.
From yesterday.....
SHINGLES....so sorry to hear that TTP has this.
SHINGLES VACCINE...if you got the original vaccine ZOSTAVAX, you need to get the new vaccine SHINGRIX. It is superior to the older one. I got the ZOSTAVAX a few years ago, I did the 2 part SHINGRIX earlier this year.
You really want to get the new SHINGRIX vaccine. My brother had shingles and he described it as indescribable pain. He also stepped into a Fire ant nest, he later said he’d do that every day rather than get shingles again.
See you tomorrow.
What a treat to get this fun Gail and Bruce puzzle today! Thank you both, for this delight. And Hahtoolah, I loved your pictures and comments--especially seeing TOTO in a TUTU. My wiener-dog Dusty, by the way, would not appreciate getting hot in a bun, as you can imagine, Irish Miss. Loved seeing the solution and then finding all those DOGS, although SUN DOG was new to me too. That gigantic lap DOG picture cracked me up, Hahtoolah. Anyway, wonderful way to start a Tuesday--thank you, everybody.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful birthday, AnonT.
And have a great day, everybody!
Was that camo girl naked?
ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Tony!!!!! I hope you enjoy a wonderful celebration.
Yea, me! I got BUCS and STRO! A few years ago that would have stayed blank awaiting perps.
Thank you, Gail and Bruce and Hahtoolah!
Hand up for THOU before THEE. I'm surprised so many of you are unfamiliar with SUNDOG. I've read about them in several books.
Wow! LLOYD Bridges, now that's a blast from the past.
I'm sorry but I believe RIGHT GUARD cannot hold a candle to Old Spice which is what my late DH used. But maybe I'm partial to it though it does have a delightfully musky smell.
Thanks, again, Hahtoolah, for your lively commentary.
Have a beautiful day, everyone!
Good Afternoon, crossword friends.
ReplyDeleteFirst, let me wish TTP a very Happy Birthday and a very BIG thank you for all the help you provide the bloggers in preparing the commentary. Sorry to hear you have shingles. I hope you can get the shingles vaccine. I just got 2nd shot of the 2-shot series. There is a shortage of this vaccine, so you may have to keep bugging you doctor to get on the list.
D-O: Summer is definitely here. This morning it was 87F when I left the house at 7:00 this morning. The thermometer currently reads "only" 94F.
Stay cool everyone.
Hey Tony! Some very happy birthday wishes heading your way from me. I hope you have a great day and year to come. Thanks for being a friend.
ReplyDelete~ Mind how you go...
Thanks for the IRIS link, Hahtoolah!
ReplyDeleteThe lap dog photo is a hoot. Our Golden, Maggie, would love to do the same on my wife's lap, but we have to remind her that a 60-lb canine does not enjoy the same privileges as our 6-lb Yorkie.
A neat pzl today from my favorite team, the Grabowski/Venzke duo!
It made me think just enough to wake up the Ol' Walnut.
Ta~ DA!

The anagram gives us a choice of several possible methodologies, but I think it most appropriate to go with the...
"WORST SYSTEM"!
I second what AnonymousPVX said about getting the Shingrix shots. If you had chickenpox as a kid, you need to get the vaccine. I, too, had gotten the Zostavax serum several years ago, but got the two-shot Shingrix serum last year. Hahtoolah, I think it's too late for TTP -- the vaccine is to prevent shingles, not to treat it once it's appeared. TTP, hope you're able to find some relief from the pain.
ReplyDeleteGreat crossword today ... finished up the 'acrosses' before I even got to the 'downs.' Can't get any faster than that!
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all! Doggone good puzzle & theme, Bruce & Gail! Thanks! Always enjoy your expos, thanks, Hahtoolah!
ReplyDeleteThat big lap dog picture is really PUTTING ON THE DOG. I had a rescued German shepherd once that thought he should be a lap dog. I was sitting on an aluminum framed lawn chair once. He came loping around the house and jumped into my lap and down I went under the weight. He was very hurt when I scolded him for it.
Happy Birthday, Tony! Enjoy your contributions to the Corner.
TTP: I hope you saw my post last night. In case you didn't: I had very painful shingles years ago. Hurt so bad I went around topless. In desperation, I applied Ambesol to the blisters. It has a topical anesthetic that soothed them when nothing else did. I reasoned that altho Ambesol is marketed for cold sores, both are caused by herpes viruses. I had no lingering nerve pain which surprised my doctor.
I loved this Gail and Bruce puzzle. I kept trying to figure out what a STOP DOG is and never realized my goof until reading the explanation here.
ReplyDeleteI like the word GAZEBO.
Happy birthday Tony!
The unavailability of Shingrix here has kept my wife and me from getting our shots. They keep saying they'll get it in, but every time we call they say they're out. Personally I've never had Chicken Pox so I don't know what the odds are of me getting Shingles. All my doctor says is "Get vaccinated." I hope you find relief soon, TTP. Do you think you want to try Anbesol that PK yesterday said worked well for her?
Good wishes to you all.
Happy Birthday Tony My first "Sunset Toast" tonight is to YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteHahtoolah: Wonderful write-up & links. Good Job!!!
Always like it when 1-a is a gimmie. I've been a BUCS fan from their beginning.
Cheers!
Good afternoon, folks. Thank you, Gail Grabowski & Bruce Venzke, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Hahtoolah, for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Tony, and many more.
TTP: Wow! The Shingles! That is too bad. I had them a few years ago and it was terrible. Good luck. Where are yours? and what side are they on?
Cruciverb was out to lunch again today. Printed mine from Mensa. Worked fine. Worked the puzzle on my way to the eye doctor's office. My eye pressure is still OK. I hope so, I take tons of drops.
Puzzle went fine for the most part. A couple of toughies. Theme was fine. Looked for it after I got 54A.
Liked the CAMO photo, Hahtoolah.
I guess I will have to look for an Idaho license plate to see "Famous Potatoes" I know there's an Illinois license plate that says "MME DFRG". That's famous in my book.
Never heard of a SITZ bath. With four perps I could not argue.
Not sure if 38A was to be GET SHOT or GETS HOT? Oh well, either way.
Well, I have to rest for a short while. The morning took its toll.
See you tomorrow.
Abejo

FLN. I never got to Monday until this morning. The 3M tourney was one of the most exciting this year with bad-luck Bryce having his stretch run foiled by young Mr Wolff.
ReplyDeleteFLN, again. CED, you could have awarded ½ to the winner; ½ (480) to runner up; 120;60. Yes, that leaves 60(for the Secretary?!). Or split the 60 four ways*. 495/3=165 per man for the winning team. You could work out the rest.
I don't know how that worked.
WC
** Those mathless ones never would have known the difference
Hi all. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DASH T !
ReplyDeleteFrom late last night, thank you PK and Lucina. I tried to get some rest after posting, but read you comments just a bit ago.
Also read all the comments today, so thanks to everyone for wishing me well and a quick healing. But after all I've read on the internet from the Mayo Clinic, the CDC and other reputable sites, it's going to take its course.
After this bout is over, I'll get the Shingrix shots. It can recur.
PK, I don't have Anbesol at home, but may put it on the shopping list. There are a couple of recommended creams / ointments that are in the Mayo article or CDC article. On the other hand, it couldn't hurt any worse. The cold compresses have been helping. I read about how the pain can continue in some people for months and years after the other symptoms go away.
Jayce, I didn't think I'd ever had shingles, but my doc was pretty confident that most everyone of a certain age had them. You have to have Chickenpox before you can get shingles. Shingles won't pass from person to person, but a person that has shingles can infect someone that's never had chickenpox and cause them to get chickenpox. Doc told me to stay away from pregnant women and infants.
Abejo, front left torso, wrapped around to the left back. So you and PK know what it feels like. PVX, I could describe the pain, but won't. TMI.
Great job on the blog today Hahtoolah. Loved it.
Spitz, The UP mainline is the northern border of our golf course and I will be out there when it rolls through Eastern Nebraska.
ReplyDeleteJayce, I meant to write that I didn't think I'd ever had chickenpox.
ReplyDeleteTTP, thanks.
ReplyDeleteTTP, have you had Gabapentin prescribed? I have nerve pain related to a back problem and tried several remedies over the last few years. In passing, I mentioned to a doctor, "thank you for fixing problem A, I wish you could help me with this lower leg pain that feels like 100 bees stinging me from the knees down every night". She asked, "has any doctor tried Gabapentin?" She prescribed 300 mg for 3 times a day. It worked!!! After getting used to it, we are now at 600mg 3 times a day. It's amazing. She said it was originally developed for shingles pain. I luckily have none of the side effects. Apparently can cause weight gain and sleepiness in many people.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to -T. You're the only only who really understands me!
ReplyDeleteWishing Tony a Happy Birthday. Always enjoy your posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for the Birthday greetings (and the CED-styled cakes)!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gail & Bruce for a DOG-gone fun puzzle; I didn't catch the theme until the unifier. SUN DOG is new to me too (Hi Spitz, IM, BigE, & Misty!)
Wonderful expo Hahtoolah - I still have links to go back to click and learn.
WO: GeeK b/f DORK, SITs b/f GAZEBOS fixed it. And do y'all remember Eddie Murphy sketch about cheap-a** colognes? Where, he says, you get your father some Old Spice, or hIGH karate? Yeah, I entered 'High karate.'
ESPs: IRENE, SITZ (Hahtoolah - I Googled, you were right to warn)
Fav: LITTER was cute as clued but esp. so w/ DOGs as the theme

Like our SYSTEM of government excepting all others :-)
TTP - sorry to read about your Shingles. I guess I need to start looking for that shot since I had Chicken Pox as a kid.
For my Birthday Eldest got me a nice wooden spoon for the kitchen, Youngest got me a little novelty music-box that plays Here Comes the Sun [3:20 Here Comes the Sun is the first song I remember hearing; I couldn't have been more than 2 yro.], and DW, it seems, forgot. We'll see if she remembers after she gets home tonight.
Cheers, -T
I'll ring in to add - yes get the new 2 part Shingrix - even if you had the Zostavax in the past. Yes, it is too late for TTP to get it for THIS episode but in about 6 months he should get immunized so he doesn't get it again!!!
ReplyDeleteTony, hope you had a wonderful birthday. I enjoy your posts.
ReplyDeleteTTP, so sorry about your horrible shingles pain.
Many times we asked our pharmacy for Shingrix and were told they had none. When we realized we could have our regular pharmacist put us on the waiting list, after several weeks we finally got the two injections.
DW did forget(ish) but had it covered... The Chess set she purchased near the Great Wall last year. Detail.
ReplyDeleteCheers, -T
ReplyDeleteHi all,
In case you haven't seen it, C.C. has a crossword "Tech Bros" today over at USA Today.
I finally got to the Post Sunday xw by Evan Birnbaum. I only mention it because of another appearance by the Wonder Dog: (Emulates) Odie(DROOLS)
ReplyDeleteI think we had the opposite clue
Wow, WSJ Monday, USA today. Go CC.
WC
For some reason, I can't get on the USA Today crossword page lately. I used to access it with no problems. Ideas?
ReplyDeleteWe just had another quick aftershock. Everything had a sharp rattle, especially my nerves.
I just finished a puzzle from when I was gone, June 26, a Wednesday. I thought it a bit difficult for midweek but managed to complete it all w/out look ups and got all the CAKEMIXES if anyone remembers that. Fun time from Dan Schoenholz. It's really late now but tomorrow I plan to go back and read your comments on it. The reason I have it is that even though I asked that my newspaper not be delivered, it was anyway.
ReplyDeleteAnonT:
I'm glad you had a good birthday. It sounds like your family really knows you.
Bill G:
ReplyDeleteStay safe! I hope the aftershocks were mild.
