Alas, our European trip has been postponed, as Oo and I will once again travel to Thailand to check in on her 97-year-old mother. Hahtoolah's pictures are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThe puzzle flowed easily, with ARRIVAL the only movie that took any thought. I enjoyed seeing TET and TÊTE next to each other. The clechos were fun, as well as the CSO to ur dear friend JOHN LAMPKIN with LUNA MOTH . Orchids are always fun. Thanks, Gary and C.C.

Good morning Cornerites. I have yet to start the CW, so I will merely give thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gary Larson for this Sunday CW which I predict will be challenging and fun.
Thank you C.C. for your excellent review and the PICS of Hahtoolah's Capri trip.

FLN -- CED, I don't know what happened. I just tried the link* and it took me to the right puzzle. Maybe it only shows up for registered users? If you did register, you can go back and view it without working it again. Press the green button with the || mark. A dialog should come up with a cartoon speech-bubble at the left side. Press that and the poem ought to come up. Ute put up two versions, a 120 piece without the poem, and the link is to a 112 piece that does have it.

ReplyDeleteWow, this one went fast. I usually spend 20+ minutes on a Sunday puz. Not this morning. Only need Wite-Out to change LAKER to LARAM -- I picked the wrong sport. Saw the CSO to TTP and Moi. Cute theme. Thanx, Gary and C.C. (After those afternoon affairs does the wait person bring the dim sum sum?)
FROZEN ACCOUNT: It took some time, but I think everything's been switched from the old "frozen" account to the new one. The only boo-boo was an electric bill debit that was refused.
VAUGHAN: I remember this one from my ute: Broken Hearted Melody
1A is a foul: Part of the answer is in the clue (P for provider).
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, good catch! Also, 69A BOSS hasn't been in use since 1982, 59D clue should say flower, not bouquet (unless answer is plural), Wiki says 84D is BUCCOS, and what the ? is a 117A HEAT TREATMENT supposed to be? Not really any fun here at all & sloppy editing.
DeleteFastest Sunday in a long time, doing across and down together. Solid perps. No new words. Great theme.
ReplyDeleteI got CRYPTO with the currency part of the clue. I just now LIU cryptozoology, a pseudoscience aiming to prove the existence of mythical creatures like Bigfoot, Nessie and Yeti.

Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, CSO to Anonymous @7:41, AKA, Daily Debbie Downer, at 11D ~ Tiny Complaints = Nits.
Now, to the most-enjoyable Sunday puzzle in many a moon, IMVHO! I loved the theme and theme fill, especially Psycho Babble. I also liked the Tet ~ Tete duo (Hi, Lemony), the Hoar ~ Rime cousins, Small crossing LeBron, and ESP crossing Ghost. My favorite C/A was Small Shooter=Minicam. Some puzzles have a sub-theme but this one had two sub-themes, one of which played off the main theme of movies: Minicam, Role, Capra, TMC, Lorre, Tom (Cruise), Ditto (Ghost) and Writer, Indiana(n) (Jones), Doc (Holliday), and Ahab. The second highlighted sports: LA Ram, LeBron, Claret (Jug), Astro, Home Ice, Epee, Toro, Bucs, B Team, Oksana, Gold, All Pro, and TV Ads (Super Bowl). Wow, what fun this was.
Thanks a bunch, Gary, for a delightful Sunday romp and thanks, CC, for the usual enlightening commentary. Thanks, also, for sharing Hatoolah's beautiful pictures of Capri.
Owen, terrific work today!
I have a question for Netflix users: Do you ever log in and have a message come up saying "Preparing for the TV, please try again later"?
I get this every now and then but have no idea why or if it's only just an issue with my connection.
Have a great day.

DNF, giving up in Bangor and googling GODIVA. Erased erase (always wanted to say that) for ERODE, solo for LONE, pod for GAM, snow for RIME, AND niner for LA RAM.
ReplyDeleteI thought I would hate this one because of all the show biz stuff. But I knew all of the flicks except ARRIVAL and HEAT, and there were a lot of sparklers like "sugar bowl marchers" for ANTS, laying down the law item for NONO, and Holliday title for DOC (I was thinking of Billie).
Deion Sanders is a bigger diva than CELINE Dion ever will be, but she did make $500,000 per show in Vegas.
The CLARET Jug is awarded to the winner of The Open Championship, called the British Open here in the colonies.
Tried to crowbar Kentucky's "cardinal" in before ORIOLE. Kentucky's state flower is considered by some to be a weed - goldenrod. I think that Baltimore residents would like to forget the ORIOLEs and focus on the Ravens.
Pittsburgh and Tampa both have BUCS.
There are probably three other Cornerites that didn't need any perps to fill INTRANET.
OKL, isn't it interesting that ottoman and DIVAN are also linked by being found in the den.
Yesterday we had TCM, today TMC.
FLN: Thanks for the kudo, WC. PK, I have to use a magnifying glass to see the Sunday clue numbers in the grid, even though I print it out in the LAT web site. I can see everything for the other six days.
Thanks to Gary for another really fine puzzle, and to CC for another interesting review. I really liked Hahtoolah's pictures of Capri. So many memories. I do remember a public place for suntanning. May have been a hotel plaza and not a beach.
@Irish Miss, I thought it was Gloomy Gus, or Nitpicker Nate.
ReplyDeleteGood morning. I had fun with this one even in my sleep deprived state. Stayed up too late watching college football. The theme didn't do much for me, but the fill and clues were enjoyable. Thank you Gary and C.C.
George Clinton has been funking things up for years: “George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic - We Want The Funk”
The Film Openings theme didn't help if you have not heard of the movies. GHOST was the only one I'd watched but had never heard of ARRIVAL, HEAT, or VACATION. A&E is not my forte. But I managed to finish in less than 1/2 hour.
ReplyDeleteFilled by perps-GODIVA, BOSS, GAM (POD?), ELISHA, VAUGHAN (knew it, just not the correct spelling),
Immortal NBA?- only after you retire- WILT, KAREEM, MAGIC, OSCAR, SHAQ- LEBRON's still playing.
ARCH- Friday night a local 9th grader threw four touchdown passes in a football game. His parents belong to our tennis club. His last name? MANNING. Will there be a 3rd generation NFL QB?
OKL, I loved the last poem.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big movie fan. I have seen BIG and FROZEN. They were okay. I was thinking of the Chevy Chase National Lampoon Vacation movies. Alan has many of the old ones, which I have seen. I like them better. I see there is a 2015 movie in this series called simply Vacation. I have heard of Heat, Arrival and Ghost, but not my cuppa.
I think I will watch the new Downtown Abbey film to see why you all enjoyed the TV series. I didn't watch this series or most other series because I can't tune in regularly enough to keep up with the characters and plot. I get bored with binge watching. I also get bored with about the fourth book of a serialized novel.
I think CC was saying the lady slipper is her state (Minnesota) flower.

ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteThere is only time to say that though this was a slow slog, it was fun to see the reveal each time. I know most of the movies but not ARRIVAL.
Drat! I had METOO instead of DITTO so that caused a chain reaction of errors.
More later.
Thank you, C.C. and Gary Larson! Fun!
Have a splendid Sunday, everyone!
Gary, I remember drooling over the Boss 429 Mustang when I was in high school. I was just as likely to get a Harley, meaning when pigs fly.
ReplyDeleteI loved this Sunday puzzle--thank you so much, Gary. It was so doable, that I got most of it without any cheating, a real treat. And my German helped right away with STRUDEL and DANKE, so, again, "danke," Gary. I did have some of the same erasures Jink reports, with SOLO before LONE and POD before GAM. ANTS came to me immediately for the 'Sugar bowl marchers', and cracked me up. I like seeing ADELE in puzzles, and was surprised and delighted to get LE BRON this morning since I'm not great at sports. Anyway, a very enjoyable experience, accompanied by C.C.'s flower and food pictures. And what a lovely vacation Hahtoolah is enjoying! Good for her.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday, everybody!
Forgot to mention, that last week, I started to wake up every morning with the song "Moon River" in my head, with all the lyrics. I have no idea where that came from and why it would pop into my sleep like that. Yesterday I finally looked it up and found that it was a song from the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's," which I did see when I was in high school! But still can't believe it stayed in my head all these years, and still don't really understand the song, with lines like "my huckleberry friend"? Who or what is that? Senior minds are complicated, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, folks. Thank you, Gary Larson, for fine puzzle. Thank you, C.C., for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteGreat Hahtoolah vacation photos. I asm envious.
I went swimming in the Caspian Sea once. The Asian part. It was nice.
OwenKL: Correct on Divan. The A.A.O.N.M.S. leaders.
This puzzle sailed through nicely. Much better than Saturday's. I never was able to even come close to finishing that. Maybe later today I will try again.
Caught the theme today. Very clever. I am not a big movie goer, but have heard of many of these.
Tried POD for 12D before GAM worked much better with three perps.
VACATION SPOT was easy. I did see that movie many years ago. Outstanding! CHRISTMAS VACATION was another great one.
Liked ANTS for 104A.
TAHOE rings home. I worked there at Stateline, NV, in the Continental Telephone Co. Central Office. Remember driving the Kingsbury Grade many times.
Anyhow, I have tons to do today. See you tomorrow.

Today’s puzzle was great fun. We also got a kick out of C.C.’s CSO to us at Sarah Vaughan. Learning moment with GAM, since I’ve only heard of pod.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gary for an interesting and very doable puzzle, and thank you C.C. for a lovely review. Our favorite city lake in Minneapolis was Lake Harriet, where we could take our canoe out on weekend evenings in the summer and listen to the concerts at the band shell.i hope they still do that.
Misty, Moon River is a favorite song of mine. I think “huckleberry friend” refers to Huck Finn, who also took a trip down a river.
Off to watch the Cubs try to hang on against the Cardinals and maybe snag a wildcard spot - they sure have lost their mojo lately!
I forgot to say Thanks to Anonymous T for kind words and encouragement regarding my complete flop attempting yesterday’s puzzle. Nice to have cornerite support.

ReplyDeleteI always need an eraser for Gary’s puzzles.......they are so enjoyable as a little effort gets the word. There were lots of ahas as I stumbled around, and I managed with no lookups, and it came together beautifully at the end with FrozenAccount, which I was sure I would never figure out!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Gary! Sunday’s LA Puzzle is such a treat.
I agree with all the comments that this puzzle was a fine treat! It was quite doable and fun to solve such cluing as for ANTS and lovely memories of my trip to TAHOE earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteKIR royale (with cassis) is one of my favorite drinks as I've mentioned before. HOME ICE is clever; I've only ever seen home court.
I love the movie GHOST and have watched it many times. BIG was greatly entertaining, too.
I thought of CEDave at hammock rests!
Even with all the sports references this was easy to work out. Thank you again, Gary.

I liked this one a lot—right up until I got to the very farthest reaches of the SE. Then not so much. INTRANET came quickly (Jinx, add me to your list... I didn’t work in I.T. but did most of the networking at my school in the early days).
ReplyDeleteHammock rests/NAPS was my favorite.
Caught the S-O to Husker right away.
@Abejo, you’re not alone in having trouble yesterday; it chewed me up and spit me out too! Probably the worst time I have had since Hector was a pup.
In college I had a summer job on a surveying crew in St Clair County IL (Across the Mississippi from St Louis), laying out the route of what would be one of the new Interstate highway bypasses around E St Louis IL. At that time all we could see of the Arch was one curved leg coming up out of the trees to the south, and one to the north. I don’t believe it was finished until a year or more later. Cool!
Supper time. I hpoe you all have a good week.

ReplyDeleteI was waiting for someone to mention The Andy Williams Show. I knew Moon River from his show, which was appointment TV for my parents. It was on NBC; I know that because that's the only network we go.
ReplyDeleteI see I am in good company having had difficulty with yesterday's puzzle.
ReplyDeleteBelow is the result of 5 minutes worth of LIU.
BOSS is listed in Internet Slang, meaning awesome or cool.
Wikipedia says the Pirates can be called either BUCS or BUCCOS. "The Pirates are also often referred to as the "Bucs" or the "Buccos" (derived from buccaneer, a synonym for pirate)."
A POSY can be defined as a small bunch of flowers. See any dictionary.
"To develop films, filmmakers use treatments, proposals or even outlines to describe and help plan a project." (Like a first draft) Heat treatment in the theme answer, is a pun like all the rest.
The real heat treatment is about working with metals."Heat treatment techniques include annealing, case hardening, precipitation strengthening, tempering, carburizing, normalizing and quenching."
My motto is LIU before you leap to criticism.
IMBd, I enjoyed your list and answers. Clever.
Anon@4:32 My previous post covered current usage of BOSS (embedded in the phrase "Like a BOSS").
ReplyDeleteBouquet in 59D refers to the smell, not a bunch. With stems, no bouquet would fit in a pocket.
Bouquet: 1. A small cluster or arrangement of flowers.
2. A fragrant smell.
A treatment is:
a. A written sketch outlining the plot, characters, and action for a screenplay but not including certain elements of a finished screenplay, such as camera directions and dialogue.
b. An adaptation of a novel or other literary work that serves as the basis for a screenplay.
OwenKL,
ReplyDeleteYes, sadly, I did not register,
so I have to do the puzzle again to see the poem.
It is a fun site though, & I bookmarked it to sign up
& redo the puzzle (maybe I can now beat your time...)
Irish Miss,
We just got a Smart TV,
so Netflix is already loaded.
Have not seen that Msg yet though.
Used to see something similar when we tried to watch Netflix thru the Wii.
but now the other TV goes thru the Playstation4 to see Netflix, & the only
Msg's I have seen are "Not Connected To The Internet" because I hit
the buttons too fast on startup... (Can't wait, dang it...)
Re: puzzle?
It helped immensely in passing the time while DW was at the rehab with MIL & Daughter#3.
But it made me hungry to find another Movie to watch, & DW now commands the smart TV,
& Daughter #2 is using the TV hooked up to the Playstation to watch The Emmys.
So I went on Youtube (which now charges for movies) & typed "Dr Who."
I enjoyed this piece of flatulence so much,
that I thought Anonymous-T might enjoy it also.
Dr Who Comic Relief...
Hi Y'all! Thanks, Gary Larson! Thanks, C.C.! Thanks for sharing your pix, Hahtoolah!
ReplyDeleteNot a speed run for me today. Took almost the usual Sunday hour.
Did not know of the movies ARRIVAL or HEAT. Forgot the VACATION series. All the theme movies entries took lots of perps because I don't know years they came out. GHOST was the only one I guessed right the first time. I couldn't think of any Hitchcock movies except "Birds" & "The Trouble With Harry". DUH!
Learning moment: CASPIAN Sea is on two continents. I tend to forget about inland seas.
For some reason I was sure the diamond store was vALES before ZALES. Duh! Wake up, PK.
Hand up for not thinking of LEBRON as "immortal" yet. Talented, yes! Egotistical, yes! Had the "B" and wanted Larry Bird who is more immortal than LEBRON since he is done playing NBA. He didn't fit without a middle initial.
Owen, perhaps you were thinking of the old (Brooklyn)DODGE(r)S with BUMS.
ReplyDeleteTampa Bay has a BUCS team too(NFL)
I think that if Misty can recognize a Sports name that makes him "Immortal". I took the clue to refer to the uniqueness of the name.
PSY got me PSYCHOBABBLE and I merely needed the B to get LIBERIA (as opposed to four perps and I couldn't get DAKAR yesterday (one of the rare Capitals I actually knew)
Jinx, cancel the kudo. You stole TB BUCS (but I still slipped in some old time baseball talk)
I was vaguely aware of the one-named movies- I actually saw GHOST.
I echo sentiments of Lucina ETAL who enjoyed this xword.
I thought DANKE was about someone named Don Q Shane.
