Happy
to salute all veterans out there on this Veteran's day! My Dad served
in the Pacific in the Big War, and my son served in the Navy in the
Persian Gulf (Iraq) scuffle. Yes I am in your group in a small way.
Entered the Army in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam war. Suffered an
improbable injury on the final day of basic training and ended up as a
corpsman in the US Army hospital at Fort Campbell. Served there for
about 18 months, then completed my service in Hardheim, Germany in a
battalion owning a Nike Herc missile. I never got to see it, but I
assume it was pointed at the Kremlin.
Happy Veteran's Day to all who served, and a kudos to all family members who continue to support troops while they are away.

No idea if it's any connection to the theme, but I notice all 4 of the unifiers also appear embedded in the top two lines of the grid: ABOUT & BOOB, GOTTI, NOR, AH SO. I think just the XO as a theme is awfully weak, I DO.
ReplyDeleteThere was an young witch from PRAGUE
Turned each of her beaus to a frog
She thought, "What the heck?
Why'd I flub that love hex?"
'Twas that her Spell Czech was missing a cog!
Winnie the POOH didn't know what to do.
His cousin was due for hunny stew.
But his stove wouldn't light
His cuz said, "It's alright,
That it needs to be hot we'll Pooh Pooh!"
{C+, C+.}
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteI saw "Clod hopper" and "Sleepless nursery rhyme character." I do a lot of mis-reading lately. No problem with the puzzle...big problem with the theme. That long "O" in the middle seems awfully weak. Thanx, Kevin and for the tour, Boomer. (I was also E-5.)
ANGEL: The only "Trout" I'm familiar with is Kilgore. Well, also rainbow and speckled.
YEN: When I visited Japan the exchange rate was 360 to the dollar. You could take a taxi anywhere in Tokyo for the equivalent of 15-20 cents.
"Where've You Been?": Kathy Mattea
The puzzle was typical easy Monday - but thanks to Boomer and his blog - as I had no idea what the theme was - maybe if I had said them all out loud!
ReplyDeleteThanks Boomer and Kevin!
I salute all those who served in my family. My FIL who was in WWII in Europe and the Pacific, my dad who served in the Marines in WWII and then naval reserves for 30 years, my brother in the Army and then retired in the National Guard while working as a schoolteacher, and my son who is currently in the Air Force.
My husband says he still remembers the talk they were given in high school about the draft coming up, but it was stopped after his freshman year in high school.
FIR with nary an erasure. Monday! But I forgot to look for the theme. As always, I had to wait for OLA(f or v).
ReplyDeleteWe get a lot of puzzles that use EDIE Falco. I wonder why we never see the face that (I suspect) is much better known, that of Stephanie Courtney.
My one grandfather served in the Spanish-American war. The other died young from the flu in 1918. My father lost most of his hearing from scarlet fever and as ineligible for service. I got a high lottery number during the Vietnam war and wasn't about to volunteer. No sons, but I have a nephew who is a lifer in the USMC. Went in right out of high school, got out and got his college degree, then went back in as an officer. His wife was a Navy MD, but is now in private practice.
Kevin, thanks for the easy start to the week. And thanks to Boomer for the funny review. And thanks to you and all the other Cornerites who have served, or supported those who did so.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteI breezed through this with nary a moment's hesitation so it's certainly newbie friendly, and then some! My only nit was noted by Boomer: It's Ya think! not You think; Ya conveys the sarcasm in a manner that You doesn't. The theme is not very strong, but I'll give it a pass based on Erin Go Bragh. ☘
Thanks, Kevin, for an easy start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for the colorful commentary. You were a fine looking soldier, Boomer. Thanks for sharing the other pictures.
Dave4, hope all goes well with Carol's procedure and subsequent treatment.
Thank you to all the veterans on this day of remembrance and to all those who continue to serve our country.
Have a great day.
Easy Monday puzzle. It seemed almost themeless. BO, GO, NO, SO is a so-so theme.
ReplyDeleteI, too, read sleepless for 20A until perps said LITTLE BO.
Boomer, I say YA THINK, also, but it was too short. RAGU confirmed it needed YOU.
I am doing exercises in the POOL at the Y three times a week. It is helping my balance and my core. I also am doing PT for my neck and my shoulder. I see improvement.
I have never heard BY JOVE, except in movies. I see it in novels, mostly from British authors.
"It’s a very British expression . . . . It’s usually associated with bluff and hearty males from the nineteenth and early twentieth century, which seems to have been its heyday. As in J M Barrie’s The Admirable Crichton: “By Jove! I say, John, what an observant beggar he is”.
Happy belated birthday, Joanne.
Dave4, how is Carol this morning?
Happy Veteran's day to all who have served and a big thank you.
I think the theme refers to the pregame meeting between Bo Jackson, his coach with the Kansas City Royals or Oakland Raiders and the team doctor. After hearing the discouraging injury prognosis from the doctor, the coach asked, "SO, BO NO GO?"
ReplyDeleteObligatory BO kNOws link
Nice pic! I was an Army nurse at Ft Campbell 1969 till I went to Vietnam. Thank to all the Vets and especially the medics!
ReplyDeleteGood morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteNice veterans' tribute, Boomer. Thanks. Your last picture: Schöner Aschenbecher von Hardheim.
Easy one with the -BO-SO-NO-GO- fill. Perps helped get the couple unknowns.
The Golden HIND was Drake's ship which circumnavigated the globe 1577-1580, and captured Spanish treasure.
NDAK - Boomer, was that photo taken near Medora?
My parents always made the drink Tom and Jerry for their annual New Years Day brunch. They would fix me one (sans alcohol) and I felt so grown up. I’ll have to google the recipe and set about having them this holiday. Thanks for the memories 🥰

ReplyDeleteHi everyone! I'm very excited to be posting here today. I have been doing these puzzles every day for several years now and checking it every day at the CW-corner. I feel like I know you all. I have not posted because generally I am several days behind and it is history at that point. So I am tickled to be here today!
ReplyDeleteI don't really have any comments today. The puzzle was pretty simple, a Monday confidence builder!
Thanks and appreciation to our Veterans and their families. We wouldn't be here without them! Have a great day everyone!
Loved the comment from Kevin about BO Jackson!
ReplyDeleteThe ”theme” of sorts was a gimme, typical for Monday, but some decent other answers. But in general, I’ve never understood the logic for the super easy early week puzzles. The argument is it encourages newbies to do crosswords, but to me me you are turning off your core base of solvers that find them too easy or uninteresting. I do them out of habit but really could skip Mon and Tues. Same with Sudoku, the one in my paper today literally required no logical thinking.
Welcome Lucy Loo's Mom!
ReplyDeleteMonday confidence builder?
(I wish)
FIW as I answered french instead of Spanish 7d Mexican "other"
With made me totally miss the theme with "little be Peep?"
Speaking of "Otre."
Yellowrocks, did you do the puzzle yesterday?
My STar Ledger Paper
(Which I have been complaining about for 3 months)
In addition to dropping the daily puzzle constructor name,
The Sunday paper was missing the Constructor name
AND The Theme!
It can't be a space issue because they had two inches of empty
Space at the bottom of the clues!
Good morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kevin, for some Monday fun. I, too, suffered some misreads. The crosses figured it out for me.
Boomer, thanks for the tour and the tribute to our Veterans. I really liked the photo on your family road. What fun!
Three inches of snow here so far, no snow service as the Landscaper is up to his ears in finishing landscaping work, and his winter crews are not complete yet. DH cut a deal with him to use the small plows to clear the walkways and stairs here for our HOA residents. The city can't plow the streets to the curb because the leaves haven't been cleared yet as they all seemed to fall at once after the Halloween snow. An airplane skid off the runway at O'Hare. I guess no one is ready for this. At least it's quite beautiful out there.
Have a fine day.
Hola!
ReplyDeleteFirst, I offer a salute to our veterans and a big thank you for your service! And has anyone heard from our wounded Marine, Dennis? I hope his recovery is going well.
Thank you to Kevin Christian for a fun romp today. Yes, it's easy on Monday but surely there is always something to learn or to review such as LAMBDA which is not often seen in puzzles.
I loved the clue for X-RAY.
It's surprising to see OTRO clued as Mexican which is not a language.
Thank you, Boomer, for your service as well as your fine review. I'm glad you posted a photo of UTA Hagen whose name we see often in puzzles but not her face.
Have a fine day, everyone! Veterans, enjoy your day; many places offer free service or discounts so I hope you avail yourself of it where ever you can.
Welcome, Lucy Loo's Mom! Please visit often.
ReplyDeleteCED, yes, I did the LAT in the Star Ledger yesterday. I looked up the theme and the constructor on the LAT website before I started. What annoys me more are the substitutions they make for diacritical marks. Sometimes the clue is impossible to guess.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the Sunday puzzle. My only faux pas was the ND in LUND. Now I see that an ABC run for A-SPACE would have given me the D, so I could have "wag"ed the N.
I attended a regional square dance yesterday afternoon, so I did not post.
Musings
ReplyDelete-11/11 and the anniversary of Berlin Wall falling allowed me to share some stories about both today as I sub in history
-BOGO is a familiar acronym today but SONO?

-Prayguh Nebaska is an unincorpoated town just south of here
-Thanks for your service, Doug!
Delightful Monday puzzle, many thanks, Kevin. I got every bit of it without erasure or problem--a wonderful way to start the week. EDIE Falco does show up a lot in puzzles--always nice to see her, and another regular, UTA Hagen. Cute to see SIRI described as a "virtual" assistant. Took me a minute to figure out the theme, but there they were, all those Os. Thanks, again Kevin. And I loved seeing those pictures of Boomer--especially the one on Burnikel road.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the blog, Lucy Loo's Mom.
Have a great week coming up, everybody.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kevin, and thank you, Boomer.
Monday puzzle are supposed to be easy.
A salute to all veterans today.
Boomer, I hope you did well in your bowling league this morning. Big win for the Golden Gophers Saturday. Very impressive defensive stands.
Welcome to all the new posters !
I gotta share this cross word cartoon!

ReplyDeleteLemonade 714, that's why I took up needlepointing.

Good afternoon, folks. Thank you, Kevin Christian, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Boomer, for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteBoomer: There is a road near Jamestown, NY, named "Fardink Rd" after my great aunt and uncle whose farm, the Fardink Farm, was on that road for decades. It is a small world.
Puzzle was very easy. Caught the theme answers, but I did not get them. Did not notice the O word in the middle until I came here. Oh well. That happens to me a lot.
Lucy Loo's Mom, please stop in as much as you can.
I have been to N DAK. Big state. My primary doctor is from there, so when I went I mailed him a postcard from North Dakota.
Did not know PILATES. Perps. Same for RESCUE ME. Perps helped.
One of the moms that brings her daughters to the school I guard at is Greek. Today is one of her daughter's "Name Day." Of course I never heard of that. She explained that Greeks get their names from Saints. The Name Day is the day that honors that Saint. They have a party, go to dinner, etc. I thought that was interesting.
This morning it was 24 degrees and windy with snow falling fairly heavy. Guarding the Crossing was a real pleasure. But necessary.
Well, off to the rest of my day. Have to finish reading our Book Club Book. "Carnegie's Maid" by Marie Benedict. So far, pretty good book. A novel.
See you tomorrow.

Hi, this is Kevin Christian. I made today's puzzle. Thank you everyone for solving.
ReplyDeleteHappy Veteran's Day to any and all veterans who read this blog. My father is 82 years old. He was in the Air Force for 30 years, from 1955 to 1985.
Thank you for stopping by, always nice to see constructors here! Big question fo you today -- was there anything more to the theme than just that O in the middle of each phrase? It seems a lot simpler than what Rich normally insists on.
ReplyDeleteSpitzboof - Yup, the photo was taken near Medora, but I have never played golf on that Mountain course.
ReplyDeleteTTP I had 534 this morning. I put a 16 pound ball in the bag and used it for the full three games. Missed three ten pins or I would have done a bit better.
Boomer @ 1345 - We had a ship reunion at Medora in August, 2001. Flew to MSP late in the day and stayed overnight in St. Cloud. Then drove on I 94 all the way to Medora the next day.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Lucy Loo's Mom.
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteTaking the afternoon off 'cuz, well, I have two weeks of vacation to burn and what better day then 11/11?
WEES - easy-peasy Monday squeeze-y. Thanks Kevin for the puzzle and stopping by The Corner. What OKL said - Do pipe-in what you meant the theme to be. I have a hard time thinking it's just xO.
Thanks Boomer for the wonderful expo/tribute to us Vets and for sharing your Army picture; quite the handsome devil, you.

Belated Birthday wishes to your DW & her sister!
D4 - What do we know re: Carol?
Never heard of a drink called Tom & Jerry. Zoe, you made me look it up. A recipie.
DW does PILATES while I pay a guy at the gym to bust my chops. I've not lost any weight (what goes in fat comes in as muscle, I guess(?)) but he's helped strengthen my back and fix my "slumped over a key-board" posture
For Veteran's Day just say Never Forget. From WWII on, every male of both sides my family* and DWs has severed. My youngest brother is in Kuwait right now.

Carol update:
ReplyDeleteDuring the Cardiac Catheterization (C. C.) she received (4) count 'em (4) stents.
The doctor assured her that she would be able to play the piano once she recovers She replied "That's wonderful, 'cause I couldn't play before the C. C."
I'll see her out.

Since we seem to be naming eponymous places, mine is Sandoval County in New Mexico. I can't find any history but my family was originally from there so presumably it is named after one of my ancestors. I'll have to check with the family genealogist who has done extensive research on the Sandovals.
ReplyDeleteA nice fun easy puzzle.
ReplyDeleteA snappy salute to all veterans.
Adding my salute to all those directed at the Vets! Have a great day--all yours!
ReplyDeleteAn easy-peasy Monday pzl.
D4E4H ~ I had a real life version of the C.C. story. A young man accidentally sawed a finger off while working alone - against the rules - in our scene shop. I went to the hospital to see him,. His dad was there, assuring him of all the things that were still possible to him minus a finger. "And you can still play the piano!"
"But, dad," cried the kid, "You know I can't play the piano."
(Not so funny when you are there..."

Kevin Christian thanks for stopping by. I second OwenKL in wondering if there was more to the theme than the BO, GO, NO, SO sequence?
ReplyDeleteD4E4H thanks for the Carol update. Maybe with a new lease on life she will learn to play the piano.

D4E4H sorry to hear about your lady friend. Please keep us posted.
Hand up CAvE/vEIGNOIR made good sense and made for a rather unfair FIW in my humble opinion.
MONK was totally unknown. Did anyone know of this TV show? But Psychology Today had an OPED that the show was a terrible depiction of OCD and of psychology and psychiatry in general.
Here is the article on Why MONK Stunk
Tycho BRAHE was a gimme. We learned about him in high school physics class. Thanks Husker Gary for the article showing his meticulous and valuable work.
CC I am curious what was wrong with that cover of UTNE? As it turns out, it has just ended publication. A terrible loss. It was a rare magazine that sought out positive solutions and gleaned news from relatively obscure sources that deserved more attention. I had subscribed since its inception and will very much miss it.
Irish Miss thank you for the answer regarding your DVR. It makes sense to be able to go back, so I suppose REW would be one way to do that. The device I use allows skipping forward or backwards which I find more useful. Thanks!
C.C. has a puzzle, Off The Ground over at USA Today.
ReplyDeleteBoomer, the only thing I hate worse than leaving and missing a stupid ten pin is chopping a two or three count.
Dash T - Similar. Father, both uncles, one of two brothers, cousins, nephews... All served. My other brother would have served, but couldn't get past the doctors.
Ft. Knox, Ft. Lee, then Mannheim and Karlsruhe for me. GO ARMY !

Very touching moment tonight during Final Jeopardy. Alex's quivering voice brought on watery eyes in this household.
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all! O, SO there was a theme? I was sure there wasn't. Enjoyed the puzzle anyway, Kevin.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your service, Boomer, both in the military and here on our Corner.
My husband served in the USAF stateside during the Korean War as a radar mechanic crew chief. Before I knew him. My son served as a USAF pilot retiring after 15 years as a major. Flew over some scary places. But his wife serving stateside raising four boys had the scariest duty when their neighborhood burned from an arson fire and she had to evacuate with kids & dogs & only the clothes on their back. So thank you to those who served in the military and those who served at home.
TTP - D'Oh re: severed. //I'm not going to even try to salvage that with a joke...
ReplyDeleteDid anyone watch the PBS show on Native Americans in the Military tonight. I thought the program was pretty good. I'm watching the D-Day recon documentary now.
Salute to all those who served or were close to those that do. I've been out for 25+ years but I'm still "in" 'cuz I worry for my little brother every day.
Cheers, -T

DeleteWC - you asked about the sudden text messages that appeared across the country. Here's what little I know:
ReplyDeleteLast week, carriers were working on an upgrade to their interconnect systems. At around 2a CST folks got texts from 2/14/19 "at random."
A buddy said it was the exact same text he'd sent back then (I have a screen shot). I was concerned that "WTF are cell companies keeping our data that long?" As it turned out, the recipient (another buddy down the hall) never got his 2/14 message (I have that screen shot too).
[And why are dudes texting each other on Valentine's Day? (Not that there's anything wrong with that) :-)].*
Anyway, my guestimation is there was a server/system, somewhere, constipated with messages that, when the interconnect was tested, suddenly released itself. That's my $0.02 and best I know.
Cheers, -T
*I'm joking, we all work together and are in constant contact re: stuff.
Wow - could I make 2/14 less clear?
ReplyDeleteOK, Buddy #2 relieved a text at 2a last week that Buddy #1 sent on 2/14.
Buddy #1 shows it in his sent thread on 2/14 while Buddy #2 didn't get it/shows in his thread until 2a last week.
Less muddy-clear? -T
