DANSK: I just watched a documentary about Jutland -- the major naval battle of WWI. I'd heard it referenced in The Hunt For Red October, but knew nothing about it. Turns out that one of the British participants apparently rewrote the history to make his contribution look better at the expense of the guy who was his boss.
CHEX: In my ute the lady next door made "Nuts and Bolts" every Christmas season -- Wheat and Rice Chex, pretzels and peanuts coated with a garlic butter and pan roasted. Now you can buy 'em ready-made.
TYPE B: That'd be me, usually. I'm easy-going, until I'm not.
Hello Everyone, The reference to Dr.Suess, aka Ted Geisel brings up a fond memory for which I am too old to remember. I was about two years old, and we were visiting my aunt at the San Diego library and Dr. Suess was there to promote a book. I received an autographed copy of "If I Ran the Zoo". I kept it for many years but somehow over time I lost track of it. "If I ran the Zoo said young Gerald McGrew, I'd make a few changes, that's just what I'd do'"

ReplyDeleteThis had a bit of crunch, what with the unknown Andra, Kara, and Manta, as clued, but the perps were fair, so no harm, no foul. I liked the visual of Odom and Doom, side by side, and the reappearance of ALPO. My lack of observation powers resulted in a total surprise reveal. Unless a theme is obvious to me immediately, I don’t really look for one as I’d rather have the Aha moment with the reveal.
Thanks, Steve, for a Tuesday treat and thanks, Hatoolah, for another visually stunning and enlightening review. My favorite photo was the snoozing Panda cubs and I really enjoyed the rousing Can Can performance; what stamina those dancers have! I’m definitely a Type B, except for the procrastinator label. I, too, loved your QOD. Too bad more people don’t practice that theory!

Anon T: Safe travels. I heard my grandson tell a friend on the phone if you come to Illinois from Texas, you have to strip naked in the garage and run up and take a shower! Not quite true. He had to leave his shoes in the garage, run up and take a shower after throwing his clothes down the laundry chute, which Gramma directed immediately into the new Speed Queen. :)

Time to go attack the scale that's attacking my Magnolia again this year. I should have taken time from my drywall repairs and basement painting to do the imidacloprid soil drench in early May, if not earlier. They emerged early this year with all the hot weather. They don't know what's about to hit them. A gallon of horticultural oil concentrate will be here tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteAt first I had REIGN instead of REALM and ICON instead of IDOL, but I figured those out after a few minutes.
I loved TIN-FOIL-HAT. It reminded me of the MIT study some students did in 2005 (Google it) where they tested 3 styles of hats. The hats ended up blocking most radio signals, but AMPLIFIED the frequencies used in mobile and satellite communications - those best for spying. Haha.

Many names today, but I waited for perps and got all of them easily.
ReplyDeleteI thought of ICON, but it seemed wrong for the clue, so I switched to IDOL. I breezed through the top third, slowed in the middle and jumped to the bottom third which I breezed through. Going back to the middle I realized I needed a CAN, so SPR soon become SPRAY ON TAN , providing all the necessary perps to finish. Tuesday easy, thanks to the solid perps.

Soda bread was always popular here in NJ every March. Now we see it year round. It usually has raisins in it.
ACELA is another popular east coast thing. It is often in the news.
I use tinfoil hat instead of aluminum foil hat. When I was young we called aluminum foil tinfoil.
Alan is still held at the hospital waiting for more EXAMs.
When Kenny was little he could "read" SAM I AM from pictures and memory. ;-)

Now on to something else. After living in this apartment for 31 years, our new owner is evicting us so that he can remodel it and flip it. Apparently we have no recourse. I have endured quite a few traumas in my life. Right now this feels like one of the biggest. I may be quite sparse posting on the Crossword Corner for quite awhile. I will try to continue to read.

Did you never consider buying? As others have suggested, sometimes there can be a rainbow on the other side of that storm.
I read the entire Roddenberry article. I am pretty crazy and confused in this day and age of contagion so I do not know if I have posted about the relationship my brother Barry established with Roddenberry after they first met at Dr. Atkins health farm near San Diego. They both loved talking philosophy and had similar type A personalities. Roddenberry did more to promote true equality in Hollywood giving recognition and work to all people regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or any other tool used to control lives.

I did pretty well today. Got through most everything OK, and the perps did the rest. Hand up for the same unknowns as others have mentioned. A cocoon occupant is a pupa not a larva, where it pupates into an adult insect. Sauna robes (or robeless spa option?) Close to the German Spa. Mantas have names? Why not. According to the Crossword police SPRAYONTAN may violate the no politics edict. Isn't HOPI already plural?
Did not know ELO, ANDRA, ODOM all perpwalked. ARCED never looks right to me. Wanted to try GREEN PIZZA for "St Pat's Day Slice" (yep, I know too long...lol). STEM again??

This was quick and easy I'm happy to say with not even one write-over.

SPRAY ON TAN is definitely not needed here. Twenty or thirty minutes outdoors and a TAN will cover one's body. It's easy to spot visitors from other states as their very white skin stands out.
When we went to the SPA and used the sauna it was usually with only a towel wrapped around the middle. I haven't been to one in a very long time. I miss those days.
I've never eaten SODA BREAD and now likely won't since any BREAD is off my diet.

Ray, I had the same thought. When the larva is in the cocoon it is no longer a larva, but a pupa.
My tan is much lighter this year. I hardly ever lie in the sun, but I was always out and about. I tan easily. Covid has clipped my wings.

TOT UP is absurd. As a CPA (inactive), I have never heard of this phrase. You can TOTAL a column of numbers, or SUM a column of numbers. But, no one, NO ONE, tots up a column of numbers.

ReplyDeleteFinished this CW in good time with only a couple of inkblots.
Sum up changed to TOT UP (yes, you see my nose wrinkling LOL). Honey changed to DEARY (I thought Honey was Sweeter!) and Spy changed to PRY. Cede also changed to CAVE.
Unknowns filled by perps included ANDRA, KARA, IDOM (although I should have known!). EAST LA and ACELA were in my distant CW memory and aided by perps.
Lucina will laugh at my thought process for 22D. My limited Spanish had me thinking that Kachina meant kitchen (I LIUed and the correct word is Cocina) and I was trying to find a Spanish word for carving knife. HOPIS filled with perps, but I required Hahtoolah's explanation for the light to dawn.
YR- I hope Alan is feeling better soon.
Picard - how distressing! Sorry to hear.
Shankers - yes it is Canada Day tomorrow (name changed in 1982). Our newspaper today had both sets of comics, CWs, Word Jumbles etc. and I am set already. All celebrations will be virtual.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the sweet messages. We had our Burnikel special meal: walleye and wild rice. Boomer also bought us a "Lemon Chess Pie" from Traders Joe's, misreading it as "Lemon Cheese Pie". Super 6D (yours is much better, Hahtoolah!).

So sorry about the bad news. I recall Andrea Carla Michaels sued her landlord when he tried to evict her. I can't remember the result. She lives in San Francisco.
My son is a CPA and a former CFO. Tot up is not a word he or other financial professionals use, but it is used informally. I have heard it often enough in tot up the bill. Because we do not hear or use a certain word does not mean that it must necessarily be rare or suspect. I love that puzzles expand my vocabulary.

Got up late last night and worked the puzzle. Then went back to bed ( on the floor ). Puzzle made me somewhat sleepy. That's good.
Puzzle went fairly well. Theme was a good one. Figured it all out when I finished.
Liked BEER GARDEN. Of course once I start my Radiation and Chemo, next Monday, no more beer for about 7 weeks. I will survive.
Had to think deep to get SAM I AM.
MANTA was unknown to me. Perps.
Love ANSEL Adams photos.
Never heard of the Latino Walk of Fame. I used to work near East LA.

Happy Birthday, C.C. ! My first foray into this blog was when you created a personalized puzzle for Jack’s 80th last year - thanks again for his favorite present.

Alan is home. The agency relaxed their rules and now he is not confined to his room and has the run of the house, interacting with and eating meals with all of his house mates. He is so happy. The house still has the no visitors rules, but my porch visits are still on.
ReplyDeleteAlan has positional hypo-tension. When he rises from bed or sitting down his blood pressure plummets and he gets dizzy and sometimes falls. He will consult with a cardiologist to see why this happens. The hospital changed one of his meds. Like tinkering with a mobile, will this get his urological problems out of wack? Also Alan has to wear compression stockings. I hope that is short lived. I hated it when I wore them. So things are moving along. This is nothing new in the story of life long medical glitches.
C.C.: I am remiss in not remembering your birthday I am glad Madame Defarge keeps careful records. I hope your birthday is spectacular.

Wanted to share a funny story the tin foil hat brought to mind....We recently moved to Arizona where we finally have a pantry large enough to store one of those handy 18" wide 500 ft. long rolls of heavy gauge aluminum foil that restaurants use. As there is no restaurant supply nearby, I turned to Amazon for it. In reading the reviews, expecting comments about the utility of the wide foil for cooking (i.e. "Great to be able use just one piece to cover a half sheet pan"), I was surprised to find reviews about how handy the large, wide rolls were for covering ones ceiling and walls!
