Boomer
FIRight. It's Monday.
ReplyDeleteI filled in ARUBA, ENYA, AMP, ADDLED, ERIE without perps or even thinking. I guess these are crosswordese for the LAT, tho possibly not for puzzles by a different editor. Crosswordese is why we get better with practice, not that our vocabulary is expanding.
First two long answers I got were DROPPED CALL and GEPPETTO, and I thought the theme was doubled double letters. The D...C... I got, linking it to WASHINGTON I didn't expect.
When ENYA vacationed in ARUBA,
She got ADDLED when diving with scuba.
She tried to decamp,
Abandoned her AMP,
And sailed the ERIE Canal off to Cuba!
next time you need to reconnect a DROPPED CALL,
Think back to the days when we had no cells at all!
Back to times
Of only land lines.
Or times before that, when the telegraph did for a call!
{A, B-.}
Some clues hit me below the belt. On Saturday while I was attempting to park in a narrow handicap parking space I lost contact with the brake pedal and jumped a curb banging the Santa Fe grillwork off the Handicap parking sign post. No damage to the sign however I learned just how much plastic is in the front end of the car. Now I am waiting for Progressive to line me up with a body shop. I wonder if they can also clean the egg off my face.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteNice easy romp from Janice. Noticed the FARCE SCARCE pairing. Didn't notice the theme. Once again, d-o tried to spell HAAGEN with two Gs. Easily fixed. Enjoyed your expo, Boomer. (Let's have fewer fights with handicap signs!)
CARMEL -- Clint Eastwood was mayor there back in the '80s for $200/month.
OATS -- You'd think a cereal factory would have a pleasant aroma. Can't speak for all of 'em, but Quaker Oats made a very unpleasant stench in Cedar Rapids. It was close to downtown and permeated the area.
FIR with no erasure. My only total unknown was GEPPETTO. I always think of travesty as being something awful, and FARCE being something ridiculous. But I learned the additional meaning of FARCE in a puzzle last week.
ReplyDeleteIIRC, the main cause of dropped calls is travelling from one cell tower area into another, and all the channels at the new tower are in use. Since there isn't any place to connect the call, it is dropped. The phone company measures these events and compares them to performance standards, adding capacity when there are too many dropped calls. It is counterintuitive, but adding capacity involves reducing the power of the existing towers and adding more towers. Achieving performance goals can be a real Poisson adventure for the engineers.
Thanks to Janis for the Monday-easy fun. And thanks to Boomer for your sense of humor. And maybe you should let CC chauffer you around.
A nice start to the week with a FIR. Thanks, Janice, for a puzzle well suited to the day, easy enough without being boring. I saw the theme developing but the first two, DEAD and DROPPED, had me thinking of fatalities. Then came DEBT which didn't fit that theme and I noticed the D and C combinations so WASHINGTON came to mind.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Boomer, for your ADROIT review. I especially liked your new description of ERIE. "Great Lake with a short name." Sorry to hear about your car's encounter with the sign. Hope it isn't too much of a hassle to get it fixed.
Have a smooth start to the week, everyone!
Nice easy puzzle to solve after a week of not solving at all. My ADDLED brain couldn't cope due to covid. I am almost better. I am having a chest Xray today to be sure I don't have pneumonia.
ReplyDeleteI solved most of Sunday's fun puzzle before getting too tired.
DO, cereal factory odor. I empathize. During a college summer I worked in a settlement house in Philadelphia, cheek by jowl with a beer factory. The odor permeated everywhere. Additionally, I could look out my bedroom window at the passing elevated trains and see exactly what everyone was wearing and the expression on their faces.
Thoughts of dear Spitz, "Gesundheit was borrowed from German, where it literally means "health"; it was formed by a combination of gesund ("healthy") and -heit ("-hood"). Wishing a person good health when they sneezed was traditionally believed to forestall the illness that a sneeze often portends."
Among the PA Dutch Gesunheit
is also a drinking toast to good health. A smarty pants answer was "if it stays down."
I remember how to say it in Dutch, but can't spell it.
Took 4:07 to Draw Curtains on this one.
ReplyDeleteSeemed like a few near-pairs today. Self/body. Three/Trio. Rents/Debt(ceiling). Dropped/Dead.
Alda/clot?
I hope you don't give any more signs reasons to call you "Boomer," though that's very cool to be honored by having the award named after you. Congratulations!
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteEasy, breezy Monday with no w/os, no unknowns, and no problems and only one, tiny nit with Cath, which looks as odd as it sounds. I had to go back to read several of the down clues as I just kept filing in the across answers and never needed to check for perps. 1A gave me a chuckle as three nieces (sisters) are heading there on Wednesday. I also smiled when I filled in Geppetto, a fun and fresh entry. There were duos galore today: Donor/Clot, Model T/Stalls, Sir/Sin, Amp/Allman, Cath/Tithed, Rae/Roe, Trio/Three, Add/Addled, Err/Erie, CNN/TNT, and Scarce/Farce. Also, some CSOs: TTP and Madame Defarge (Chi), Ray O and Inanehiker (ENT, Clot, Donor, Body), Lucina and Moe (ASU), Hahtoolah and Lemony (Pre Law), and CC (Tea).
Thanks, Janice, for a pleasant start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for the usual wit and wisdom. Sorry to hear about your fender-bender. Hope the claim and repairs go smoothly.
Have a great day.
FIR, nice Monday romp.
ReplyDeleteI haven't posted here for ages and I don't frequent the blog nearly as often as I used to. But I saw CC's video about Benilde St.Margarets. How fun!!! All of our children attended that school and I volunteered there for years. So nice to see that connection.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I had no problem with the fills today in the puzzle, but had to come here to figure out the theme connection. Apparently my brain is not working so well this am.
Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Janis and Boomer (congrats on being honoured, sorry about your fender-bender).
ReplyDeleteI FIRed and saw the DC theme, but thought it was a little crunchier than the usual Monday. I’ll chalk it up to Canadian disadvantage.
Two American networks, an American minor hockey league, a California city, a Phoenix school, an American govt. security, a Penn state coach. At least I knew WASHINGTON and ERIE.
This Canadian was introduced here several years ago to “Who’s on First” by AnonT. I did not know this famous skit, although I knew ABBOTT and Costello. (We had Wayne and Schuster).
I too noted FARCE beside SCARCE (but not pronounced alike!), SENSOR and DONOR, THREE and TRIO.
UNAMUSED reminded me of Queen Victoria.
Also lots of religion with SIN, SATAN, TITHED and CATH.
An ENT might treat that ACHOO as well. GP could treat strep (with good old penicillin).
YR- Hope you recover completely soon.
Wishing you all a great day.
Joe P. got into trouble towards the end of his PSU days. I forget the details
ReplyDeleteJennifer EGAN was unknown. Perped in without me noticing
Jinx did you mean poison or fish(poisson) as in
"Poisson sans boisson est poison"(French insist on wine with their fish)
Boomer, at least Progressive will handle the rental car- the only way to afford one
I "romped " through this easy Monday and enjoyed the Boomer write-up (CC tipped us off yesterday about the well deserved award)
WC
YR @ 7:34 AM So sorry to hear that you have been dealing with COVID and hope you continue to feel better. Gesundheit!
ReplyDeleteAs I said yesterday, Boomer, the Burnikel Award is such a special honor for you. Congratulations!
I was looking for something silly to post about either Washington, of DC, when I came upon this list of facts about our Capital. I thought it was a joke when I read item #2 about Darth Vader, but it appears to be a very curious fact!
ReplyDeleteI also wondered "what on Earth could a Quaker Oats Factory smell like?"
Turns out it is on the list of don't go there, 5 stinky places...
Boomer, sorry to hear about your fender bender, but I seriously believe it is not your fault, and those damn sign poles should have those foam rubber wrap arounds like they put on football goal posts to prevent serious injury....
Yellowrocks,
hope you are feeling better. Sorry to hear that you were unwell.
But I would like to hear how you overcame it. Were you vaxxed and boosted? Did they give you monoclonals? Or those new pills?
Again, feel better...
Sorry,
ReplyDeleteMy copy button seems to be stuck...
here is the correct 5 stinky places.

ReplyDelete-Is having a DEBT CEILING in D.C. a FARCE?
-A recent Friday puzzle used Issa RAE
-Our new golf pro’s last name is Kingston. He has never heard of the TRIO that sang Tom Dooley
-MOTION SENSOR cameras have shown us there are ground squirrels burrowed under our sunroom. Problem?
-While Benz and Daimler built expensive cars, Ford built them for the masses with, uh, mass production
-Wi-Fi can get DROPPED if too many people are using it at the same time
-STALLS – Nebraska will experiment with shot clocks for the next basketball season
-The topic of our sermons is anybody’s guess as the incredibly bad reverb in the church makes hearing it nearly impossible for those of us over 60. The priests were unimpressed by my suggestion of putting PowerPoint bullet points on the screen we installed two years ago.
-Flo and Progressive had better come through for you, Boomer!
My week always gets an uplift from a Boomer broadcast. I join in the congrats for the honor to Boomer and the Burnikel Award.
ReplyDeleteI know both Carmels having traveled to each. Jennifer Egan may be a Monday stretch for our science/math solvers but a Pulitzer prize is a big deal.
Enjoy spring, only 13 weeks until summer and days getting shorter again
HG, I doubt that Flo puts out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the well wishes.
ReplyDeleteCE Dave, to answer your questions: (Others may wish to skip this.) I felt slightly "off" on awakening Wed. morning so I took a rapid covid self-test and was surprised it was positive. All Wed. though Sat. I had 99.9 fever which left me feeling very unwell. My normal is about 97.4. Covid magnified my usual sinus problems and post nasal drip. The doctor prescribed brand new Paxlovid and by Sat, evening my fever was down and my sinuses were "normal" for me. I still have slight chest congestion but never had breathing problems. I had a chest X-ray today. During the fever period I took lots of rest and stayed hydrated.
This year I had two shots and a booster. I am very careful and wear a mask in stores. Except for grocery shopping I do not come into contact with the unvaccinated. I have not infected anyone I know including Alan.
I think the new meds and the shots made this a relatively mild experience.
If this is TMI, I warned you.
A pretty easy puzzle, as befits a Monday. The only thing I had questions about were the proper names: Ernst Mach, Jennifer Egan, and "Geppetto." Put the perps made them clear. FIR, so I'm happy. (and congrats, Boomer, on your recent honor.)
ReplyDeleteShorthand for Chicago's MLB team is CWS.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, congrats to Boomer for the naming of an award after him! AND thanx for today’s nice write-up. I can’t help wondering why you would drive 20 miles to get the Miso. Can u not order it from Amazon? Best wishes on this weeks treatments. Now, the CW: managed to FIR but took 16 (hello, anon!) and don’t know if the CW was a little crunchy for a Monday or if fate is still getting even with me for my Friday romp. Or maybe my age is catching up to me. When I saw DROP, DEAD, DEBT and DRAFT (as between the ears) I knew the theme had to be Washington DC. The soap LYE fill makes me once again suggest people STOP using soap altogether. No scent/no dye liquid laundry detergent is much better: gets you cleaner, is MUCH easier on your skin and especially your eyes (due to a better pH), AND if that’s not enuf, leaves no soap scum. Oh, and it’s cheaper than bar soap. I’ve been using it for years. Yellowrocks @7:34 I’m glad you’re feeling better. As you said, good job you were fully immunized. You made me smile: “beer factory” indeed!! It’s a BREWERY, and they smell WONDERFUL!! (I grew up in Milwaukee!)
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! Great Monday puzzle, I got every letter perfectly, a total delight! Many thanks, Janice, for this treat. And I always love your Monday commentaries, Boomer, and congratulations on that great Bernikel Award!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't figure out what all those theme words had in common except the letters until I got WASHINGTON. Of course, Washington D.C.!
Fun to see Alan ALDA in a puzzle.
Pope's religion was a gimme. What else could a Pope be but CATHolic?
Never heard of physicist Mach, but ERNST was fun to get: the name of my grandfather and uncle ERNIE, and a number of other relatives.
Have a great week coming up, everybody.
Uncle Fred, yes it was a brewery, of course. Sometimes this old brain has a temporary hiccup. That's why names slow down puzzle solving for me. When Alan forgets a word I encourage him to "talk around it." I did here. Smelling the brewery at first was fine. Smelling it 24/7 all summer became annoying. We were literally right next door to the brewery and the EL in a tough neighborhood which we seldom left.
ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteSuper easy Monday solve! Thank you, Janice!
Luckily I knew the names ALDA, ARUBA (much in the news, good and bad), ENYA, ERNST, GEPPETTO, and even ALLMAN. I believe that Cher was once married to one of them.
CARMEL. Have visited many times when my friend, Claire, lived there. I miss it. It's charming but the traffic is horrible and the streets narrow.
Yellowrocks:
I am so sorry to learn of your illness and hope you are improving.
I'll take a CSO at ASU where I earned my Masters degree.
Boomer, congratulations on that honor! I am sure it is well deserved. Believe me, I understand exactly what you are experiencing in terms of dealing with insurance, ETC. At least it wasn't another vehicle you hit.
I have a personal DEBT CEILING. I charge only as much as I can pay off at the end of the month. Why charge at all? I have a "cash back" credit card.
Enjoy your day, everyone!
Baseball lockout settled, time to watch "Who's on First" again.
ReplyDeleteAs I write, a game show's prize is a trip to CARMEL
ERNST Mach was honored by having the speed of sound named for him
The only factory I know that smelled good was in downtown Hershey PA. Mmmm, chocolate. Though lumberyards might qualify.
Boomer, congratulations on your award. You certainly deserve it. And, even better, all the love you have given is being returned back. I admire you.
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON DC was my home town for many years and I still have friends there. Loved the CSO theme for me! I have many WASHINGTON DC photos.
ReplyDeleteHere I was at the WASHINGTON Monument with the Capitol barely visible over my shoulder.
Loved seeing physicist ERNST MACH honored. One of my heroes. Yes, people know him for the speed of sound as noted by billocohoes. But I was in awe of his insights into general relativity before Einstein.
MACH noted that if you spin a bucket of water, the water rises at the edges due to "centrifugal force". MACH speculated you would get the same effect if the bucket stayed still and you rotated the universe around it. A difficult experiment to do. But it was an impressive insight of relativity that led eventually to detecting gravitational waves.
From Yesterday:
ReplyDeleteJinx, Jayce, AnonT Thank you for the tips on getting between Austin and Houston. And regarding flip phones and the evil Verizon.
I found a very satisfying solution. I got an Alcatel MyFlip 2 phone at Best Buy for $19.99 that is tied to Tracfone.
Then I bought a year of prepaid service from Tracfone for $125. Yes, about $10 a month. A third of what Verizon was charging. They even transferred my phone number over and that took less than a day to be completed.
If you want to do this phone number transfer, I highly recommend calling Tracfone service at 800-867-7183 and talk to a real person. Just answer "I don't have one" or "other" to every question so that you reach an actual human. Their automated system is awful, but the human agents are very good. Much better than Verizon's!
Tracfone has been around since 1996.
WC, Poisson is a specialized area of statistics that deals with infrequent events. When I was there, telco engineers dimensioned the network to have a failed call rate of 1 in 100 or 1 in 1,000 during the busiest times. Forecasters provided estimates of how much traffic (number of calls and average call duration), and the engineers used Poisson tables to help determine how many of each widget were to be installed.
ReplyDeleteMy remark was intended to be a play on words with the famous Poseidon Adventure. Maybe too cute by half, as the saying goes.
YR, I for one am very interested in your real-world covid-19 experience. Thanks for sharing the details.
Picard, FLN Jinx advised you to fly to IAH. I believe Anon-T expected you to fly into Hobby, where the majority of SW flights land. That's the handier airport for Anon-T.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ms. Luttrell and Boomer!
ReplyDeleteThis was a pleasant PZL & followup. I felt a bit slower today. Maybe I was just slow in waking up.
No diagonals, hmmm....
~ OMK
Hi Y'all! Fun & easy puzzle, Janice, thanks! Thanks, Boomer, & congratulations on your honor.
ReplyDeleteI caught on to the theme after the first two which helped me get WASHINGTON and the other two theme entries.
Had trouble getting the cross between EGAN/TNOTE from those clues.
YR: Thanks for telling us about your COVID experience. Glad you had the vaccinations. Sorry you felt bad. My kids are trying to get me to go to a retirement home and I am resisting because I haven't had the shots. The move would make them feel better, but I wouldn't right now. I've had past bad reactions to several different kinds of shots.
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteI missed the theme completely as I didn't slow down inking long enough to think about it. Thanks for the Monday puzzle to get us back into the work-week, Janice.
Boomer, I was sorry to hear about your accident -- it doesn’t seem to have dented your humor though. I enjoy'd your re-cap.
WO: misspelled ALMANN [sic] Brothers.
ESPs: PATERNO, EGAN
Fav: I'll go w/ CARMEL by the Sea. Been there a few times and, I'm sure Lucina will agree, it's absolutely beautiful with a couple really good Italian restaurants.
{A, B+}
YR - I was wondering where you wondered off to... Sorry to hear you caught covid. Keep resting and get better.
Pop saying "that's obviously yes" is either "Does a bear s*** in the woods?" or "Is the Pope CATHolic?"
last night, while we were cooking, Eldest wondered if we needed more pepper on the roasted vegetables, I responded
"Is the Pope Catholic?"
She looked at me and said, "How would I know?"
I should have taken her to church more often :-)
GEPPETTO's boy: I think it was my little sister, when she was four or five (she's 9 years younger than me), who called him "Pinocchi-nose."
D-O: Ironically, both IAH and HOU take me an hour to get to them.
Some ALLMAN Brothers to take us out...
Cheers, -T
Looks like you can fly nonstop from AUS to HOU, but have to go through LOV to get to IAH. When I worked in Phoenix, I had to change planes in Albuquerque to get to LOV. Because damned Wright Amendment.
ReplyDeleteI thought CATH was a verb, and described what the big, hairy male nurse does to you when you are in the hospital and are having trouble peeing.
ERNST was destined to be involved in speed travel; his entire life his family and his teachers all yelled at hin, "Mach Schnell!"
ReplyDeleteDAL, not LOV
ReplyDeletePicard, you do get around : Boston, DC, …
ReplyDeleteMaybe "Cath." was the name of the nurse.
One of my stops today was a Vet Serv. Office. While waiting the last Five minutes of Young Frankenstein was on the TV.
WC
I liked this puzzle. Filled almost all of it with horizontals alone, just a few verticals needed to suss the long theme answers, so I missed a lot of the clues and answers.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jinx re CATH: the first thing to come to my mind is what he said about the big hairy male nurse.
Picard, thanks for the information about Tracfone.
Congratulations again, Mr. Burnikel, on becoming the namesake of the former Coach's Award.
Thank you, Yellowrocks, for the description of your experience with Covid. In Linz, Austria, they also say "Gesundheit" when making a toast, but only if the libation is Champagne.
Good wishes to you all.
I forgot to mention that the technician who did my recent echocardiogram liked to be called Cath. NOT Cathy!
ReplyDeleteLate to the game again! Thanks, Janice, for a fine Monday start.
ReplyDeleteMostly at this point, WES.
Boomer, thanks for another beyond the beyond review. Perfetto! Congrats to you on one of your many honors. You are quite the active corner member. I appreciate all you do. Be well. You are very special.
Have a sunny day.
Lemonade, LOL "Mach Schnell!" indeed.
ReplyDeleteEasy enough puzzle, except I needed perps for ERNST and EGAN, but I got an FIR.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janice and Boomer!
I haven't been able to get here since sometime last week, but I did glance back at the comments about Picard's possible sojourn to Houston. I didn't get to read everything, BUT what ever you do ---
STAY AWAY FROM INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT!!!!!
There is MAJOR construction going on there, which will probably outlast me! I think they are demolishing one terminal building and replacing it.
You've heard about Hogan's goat? That's IAH for the foreseeable future. It's supposed to be completed the 32nd or maybe 33rd of May, but the exact year has not been mentioned.
According to one of my friends who was just up there, the road that runs among the terminal buildings is down to ONE lane. I had to pick up my uncle there last summer (because he ignored my advice to fly into Hobby). It was terrible then (two lanes), and it is apparently worse now.
Whatever you do, fly into Hobby --- and make sure you let us know ahead of time, so that we can make some plans!!!
FWIW, there is another 'Carmel' that is much more relevant for C-Eh! There is a Carmel, NY -- just north of Mahopac and west of Danbury, CT. But, being New York, the town's name isn't pronounced 'Car-MEL' like Californians do, but rather 'CAR-mel' with the 'e' morphing into a schwa. (Of course, Mahopac is pronounced 'Ma-HO-pac', instead of the California-conditioned 'MAY-ho-pac.')
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThank you Madam Janice Luttrell for a nice and easy Tuesday puzzle, that I enjoyed very much.
Thank you Boomer for a very amusing review.
Congratulations on the great honor of a coach's award named after you ... well deserved for all your altruistic dedication to the school and your beloved sport.
Hope you are improving in health and spirits ... my prayers for you every night.
Hope your minor fender bender problem will be resolved soon. The sign will probably survive, but these plastic bumpers on the new cars almost always have to be replaced, in toto.
I was surprised by the short form CATH ... and on hindsight it could also stand for catheter ... especially the dreaded Foley one. If you think it maybe painful and inconvenient, ... think of all the people who have permanent ones !!! There are a lot of people walking around with tubes and other paraphernalia coming out of their bodies, on a permanent basis...
I did not understand Lemonade's comment on 'Flo does not put out' and Mach Schnell .... thank G-d for Google !
For the naive... 'putting out' can mean 'making out'
and Macht Shnell means , in German, means Hurry Up. or Go Ahead, or Make it Quick ...
I have gone to Carmel-by-the -sea, south of MOnterey, 2 times. Is that the same as the Carmel in Calif ? Cute, expensive homes, and fancy boutique stores...
Picard, you have pictures from all over the place and a magnificent cataloging system, that yu can pull up the pictures any time you need them. Wonderful !
Yellowrocks, thank you for your post-vac COVID experience, a lots of docs informed me that if one gets Covid, after they have been vaccinated, the symptons are generally quite mild.
Trust Pfizer to come up with an oral pill, they are licensing to 95 countries via UNICEF or UNESCO ....PaxLovid or ( Nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir.) I hope the doc also prescr some Nsaids to reduce the pain and the fever symptoms.
Have a good evening, you all.
