Notes from C.C.:
Boomer's surgery this morning was canceled. The surgeon tested positive for COVID yesterday. We'll know a new date soon.
Hi Y'all! Bruce, thanks, this puzzle was MY PLEASURE. GLAD TO DO IT. Liked the positive theme. Fine expo, Boomer! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteDNK: ROSE, OMNI, ELAYNE. Perped in easily.
LPNs in an ICU? Think they have to be RNS to be in ICU here.
Phooey, I slept thru the eclipse of the moon tonight. Now I'm awake and don't want to be. Guess it's just as well. Now that the foliage is on the trees I'd probably have to go out to the middle of the street to see the moon.
PK @3:45 AM The LPNs are the ones who fluff up the pillows and change the bedpans.
DeleteEinstein.
ReplyDeleteThe PALE fire of OPALS doesn't have the glitter
Of diamond, ruby, emerald -- they are fitter
For wedding rings,
Or crowns of kings.
Opals have worlds in them, that beckon, "Come hither!"

Although there were a few proper names I didn't know (such as "Elayne") this puzzle was the usual Monday "walk in the park." FIR, so I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteThis one filled just as fast as I could write. It was "A LOT of fun." Thought the expression PEEL OFF had an A in it. Learning moment. ROSE was the only unknown proper name, but the perps were solid. Thanx Bruce and Boomer. (Good luck with that shoulder surgery today.)
SIDE -- Side by Side is one of many of Kay Starr's hits from the '50s on my music server.
LAPSED -- We let our Barnacle home delivery subscription lapse several years ago. At the time it was about $280/year. Now digital only is $30/month.
"Generous Bonuses" -- My awlpatch employer used to pay an annual bonus in mid-February. It usually amounted to 25-30% of the annual salary. There were always mass resignations the following day.
FIR. Nice easy Monday romp.
ReplyDeleteXxxxxxxx My two sports events were anti-climatic. I got a notification on the winner in Texas and Dallas had a 40pt lead when I turned that game off.
ReplyDeleteWe had chat groups at DEC and everyone was atwitter when KK came to town. Never a threat to DD. Had to order coffee from a separate line.
Would Karenina for ANNA be obscure?
As Boomer knows the Lakers were originally from Minneapolis where rumor has it there are a few lakes
A BOUNTY* is hardly a bonus but cops get them for nabbing fugitives. To say more = political.
I had inkovers in Cali: spa/TUB,sport/ADORN. I did guess BONY but had pitiless/RUTHLESS. I did recall UDON
Good luck today, Boomer

BOOMER you are living in Rosanna Rossaannadanna reality. Hang on.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a long time before I see BV and not miss GG. I have a video of Charlotte singing You are my Sunshine when she was 15 months. She and Harper sang and danced like pros on Sunday
More prayers and thanks Bruce
1-2-3 done. Thanks, Bruce and Boomer.
ReplyDeleteBoomer, good luck with your surgery.
Still working on a problem corner from yesterday. It was going so well before I hit that.
Bounty can also mean abundance.
Looking forward to this morning, my first outing since my fall. Our car service will take me to my ortho appointment.
Took me 5:05 to say de nada.
ReplyDeleteI knew neither the actress, nor the show/movie, and wasn't sure on the spelling of Elayne Boosler. Otherwise, seemed like a Monday.
FIR, but erased seed for SOIL and elaine for ELAYNE. Waited for perps to complete _STAR. DNK ROSE.
ReplyDeleteYesterday BRA, today UDDER. Makes me TITTER.
I'm reading Michener's "Texas". He quotes U.S. General Philip Henry Sheridan: "If I owned Texas and HELL, I would rent Texas and live in HELL." (I liked living in Texas, though. Except for the ice storms.)
Favorite old-time MEDLEY: 5th Dimension's Jimmy Webb MEDLEY
Favorite not-quite-so-old MEDLEY: Kid Rock's Sweet Home Alabama / All Summer Long
DO - Happy to read about your bargain epaper rate! I have a similar situation with our local rag. But its worth the extra money to not have to haul the newsprint to the curb for recycling every other week.
FLN: -T gave WC HELL for having spam on pizza. I'll add that I never order pineapple on pizza whenever anyone I know is in the restaurant. I love it, but a LOT of people think it's like making lasagna with cottage cheese.
Thanks to Bruce for the nice, polite easy Monday grid. And thanks to Boomer for penning the tour with surgery looming. I'm sorry that pain relieving operation was delayed.
Musings
ReplyDelete-An odd clue for ROSE above cwd regular ELLA (ELLA Dershowitz was our Sat. constructor two weeks ago)
-EDSEL was the wrong car at the wrong time.
-I associate BOUNTIES with people that seek criminals for a reward
-The Omaha paper wanted $450 to renew, they settled for $150
-FORE!
Today's puzzle was MY PLEASURE and that crossing with ELAYNE was my only correction as I started writing an I when I checked the perp to see it needed another stroke to make a Y. Officially a WO, I guess. But Bruce, I found your puzzle just right, not too easy, and perps were helpful where I didn't know things, so not too hard either. Come back ANY TIME AT ALL!
ReplyDeleteBoomer, thanks for the review. I'm so sorry your surgery got cancelled after all the preparation for it. I hope you will be rescheduled soon so you can get some relief from the pain.
Our digital Atlanta newspaper is $3 a month more than our digital New York Times subscription costs but is still lots less than having a paper copy delivered. Since I can print out the puzzle, I don't mind getting the paper digitally.
Time to get busy and PEP step over to the gym. Hope you enjoy your Monday!
Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Bruce and Boomer (sorry that the surgery was cancelled after all that prep).
ReplyDeleteI FIRed, but my time was a little slow for a Monday. I’ll blame it on being tired after a busy weekend. But I saw the Polite theme and got the TADA.
I had Pete before PHIL. (Smiled at ROSE underneath, but then had to change.). We have Wharton Willie as our prognosticator of spring.
Hand up for Spa before TUB.
I had Tunes before TRUES.
ELAYNE required perps.
Wishing you all a great day.
Such a good-natured cordial Monday puzzle
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Fairy tail "monsters": OGRES? Shrek and Fiona would disagree. Almost put melody for MEDLEY but didn't quite fit the clue. And started but stopped writing bonanzas for generous bonuses..ROSE McIver currently stars in the American version of "Ghosts",👻 a fav comedy of mine on CBS
Aren't "tee sizes" like golf balls, all the same size?😁.. KSTAR? Huh?🤔 sounds like what you sit on.
Darn, one inkover.. I listen to ELAYNE Boosler on "Comedy Central" Sirius XM car radio, didn't realize the spelling variation till I perped. "Take's off" PEELS. Like a motorcyclist or an ecdiasyist 🤭. Is TITTER not UDDERly related?🤗
"You are my Sunshine" what every 50's Mom sang to us kids. (Almost a lullaby) 🌞👼
DW taught English '75-77 through a Johns Hopkins Extention while I was attending University in Italy. She exchanged students with some British teachers at their school to test English language skills.
When DW asked, "what is the response to 'thank you' her own class knew the answer "YOU'RE WELCOME" while none of the Brit taught students had ever heard the phrase. Brit teachers claimed it wasn't commonly used in British English. BTW the biggest department store in town back then was called OMNI

Sorry to hear of the surgery delay Boomer.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteThis was an easy, breezy solve with a simple but thoughtful theme. I am lucky enough to say Thank You often to the many people who spoil me with kindness. My lone w/o was Spa/Tub. The unnecessary and annoying proper noun cluing continued today with Rose, Train, Donuts, Nite, Hell, and Are. I promise I will not mention this pet peeve again, per Thumper’s advice. 🙊
Thanks, Bruce, for a smooth start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for going above and beyond once again. I hope the delay in your surgery is remedied ASAP.
We’re expecting strong storms this afternoon with high winds causing power outages. Hope we’re spared the worst of it.
Have a great day.
Had a great view of last night's spectacular red moon total lunar eclipse here in the Adirondacks with minimal ambient light
ReplyDeleteI took these poor quality pictures with my not-so-great phone cam as the eclipse progressed
Did anyone get better shots?
🌔
ReplyDeleteThank you Bruce Venzke for a nice and easy Monday puzzle, which I enjoyed and solved in good time ere my weekly blood draw ( and ere my ingestion of drugs/meds and breakfast ....)
Thank you Boomer ( and CC) for a funny and inspiring blog review.
Sorry that the shoulder operation got postponed, but I hope you're the first on the list when the surgeon, .... he (?) recovers from Covid.
Although LPNS are required in all wards/ rooms, ... they're not the first med assts that come to mind in an ICU ... RNs, IPNPs, CRNAs and Hospitalists / Intensivists and PAs perhaps...
I didn't think that BOUNTIES was a synonym for BONUSES.
Long ago, I worked for a very profitable company that paid annual bonuses,.... but they were weighted also by years of service ( loyalty ! ) and also the bonuses were paid over a 5 year period ... so when I left, I also left a generous portion of my past years bonuses.
BTW, paying bounties to law enforcement officers, seems to me to be a conflict of interest, since that is their main, or ONLY job !! Bounties should be paid to laymen who are not ordinarily law enforcement personnel...
BTW, per the IRS regs, since 1979, was that bonuses declared but not actually paid ( i.e. accrued ) to employees,... not a part of the upper level management, ... can be deducted, as an ordinary and necessary expense, in the previous year's tax returns, on an accrual basis ... provided the bonuses are irrevocably paid or reserved within 75 days of the next fiscal year.
Finally, I never realized that Punzutawnt was the name of an actual town in Penn. until I passed it on my way, on the turnpike, to NJ and New York City. ;-) Probably, the groundhog is its only claim to fame.
Have a nice day, and a good rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteRay O Sunshine, your homonyms always crack me up ... though they sometimes ( for me - ) require a little bit of thinking.
I don't know where you come up with them, but enjoyable never the less.
Your link for the lunar eclipse was so small, a dot in the slide, that I nearky missed it.
On a philosophical level, are lunar eclipses more common than the solar ones ... althoug I presume, they may be less spectacular.
Easy-Peasey fun and breezy Monday level CW: unclefred's favorite, and this one was right on the mark. Only W/O: PORTENDS:PREDICTS. Oh, and I mistakenly filled ARC in 64D instead of where it belonged, 65D, so had the W/O: ARC:MAT. Just a dopey error. Did not know the spelling of ELAYNE so had to wait on PERPS. Other than that a smooth fill; FIR in 12. Thanx, BV, this was an enjoyable CW, with good clues and a nice theme. It's good to be reminded how many ways there are to answer, "Thank you!" Thanx for the nice write-up, Boomer, and best wishes on getting that shoulder fixed. Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteOnce I saw the theme, I just knew one of the answers would be “no worries “ this expression used by many young people I encounter in stores. But, no, all traditional answers this morning. Fun solve.
ReplyDeleteDelightful Monday puzzle, many thanks, Bruce. Boomer, nice surprise to see you back today, with lots of fun comments and neat pictures. Many thanks for that too, and I hope your surgery will be rescheduled promptly.
ReplyDeleteMy first entry were those OGRES, which surprisingly got me IGLOOS since there aren't many words with G as their second letter. Then the rest of the corner fell into place.
Always nice to see Shakespeare in puzzles, like King LEAR this morning.
ELLA Fitzgerald has sure become a puzzle regular.
Still remember being glad we didn't buy an EDSEL back in the day.
Have a great week everybody.
Puzzling thoughts:
ReplyDeleteFIR with zero mistakes
A CSO to all of our "shy posters" with ANON.
Sorry to hear about the surgery delay, Boomer
It just goes to show you. It's always something. If it's not one thing, it's another
ReplyDeleteA pleasant XWD from Mr. Venzke, well analyzed by Boomer.
ReplyDeleteFIR. Only paused before committing to 59D, LPNS. Had to work it out.

Its anagram (14 of 15 letters) seems to refer to "barbaric sounds" referenced by such American poets as Walt hitman and Ezra Pound.
I refer of course to their apparent amused affection for...
"LAUGHABLE 'YAUPS'"!
Bruce without Gail? ANY TIME AT ALL. Or that could be Boomer's surgery.
ReplyDeleteAn easy start for the week for a 10 minute or less puzzle.
Never saw the clue for ROSE but it would have been perps for that unknown.
K STAR- filled STAR and waited for a perp.
ANNA Kournikova and most of the rest of the tennis players from Russia and Belarus are sitting between a rock and a hard place. All the one currently playing are out of Russia and keeping mum with relatives still there. ANNA lives in Miami with Enrique Iglesias.
"You ARE My Sunshine" was made popular by the LA's Gov. Jimmie Davis in 1940. Got him elected twice.
Boomer and CC So frustrating to be all dressed up for surgery and no where to go. Good that your surgeon was tested and avoided giving you COVID. Hope things are soon back on track for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the gratitude theme. Gratitude is a key element of good mental health and quality of life. I was surprised to learn that in my wife's culture it is considered rude to say THANKS to a family member. I risk the rudeness and THANK her for each of her many helpful household contributions.
RayOSunshine Glad you also got to experience the lunar eclipse last night. Sorry you missed it, PK. Did anyone else catch it?
Here are my lunar eclipse photos from last night a short walk from our house.
Our friends at the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit astronomy club set up telescopes at the shopping center by our house and had hundreds of customers. Yes, it is amazing how small the moon is. You can cover it with your pinky at arm's length. Quite a contrast with our intuition that it fills the sky.
From Yesterday:
ReplyDeleteWilbur Charles and AnonT Thank you for the kind words about my MANAGUA SRTA and MERCH TENT photos!
Thanks for the warning about another Picard, WC. We don't do any of those streaming services. Just one over the air TV station in our little city.
AnonT thanks for the MOCKUMENTARY Spinal Tap discovered by a new generation. Did you see that the IMDB review of Spinal Tap goes up to 11?
Vidwan Thank you for your TANTRA comments.
Here is my first photo entering Borobudur Temple in Indonesia which has some TANTRA activity.
This panel is rated PG, but other panels in the area go up to X. TANTRA sex is about maximizing being in the moment and experiencing sensation for extended time. It is a discipline on the path to enlightenment, but it is also a celebration of the joys of life.
W.A.S.: My son-in-law was an LPN who did meds & shots, NOT bedpans & bathing. CNAs do bedpans. Now SIL has his RN & does dialysis.
ReplyDeleteMy late brother was a singer who had the strange quirk of sometimes singing in his sleep. My sis-in-law would wake up & jab him in the ribs to get him to stop. Shortly before he died, he woke her singing "You Are My Sunshine". She was so touched by that, she just let him sing. It was "their song" from dating days.
I liked this puzzle. As Big Easy did, I filled STAR and waited for the perp. Hand up for SPA before TUB.
ReplyDeleteJeez, the surgeon tested positive for COVID? Jeez.
Good wishes to you all.
Picard, beautiful photos of the eclipse. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy recovery is proceeding faster and faster. I took The Oaks' car service to my ortho today. The healed fracture line was so good it was hard to find on the X Ray. I am allowed to do anything I am comfortable with, so I am now walking anywhere in our building without a walker and even doing stairs. I drove to the bank today without a problem. If this week continues this pattern I will buy groceries on Friday and pick up Alan for the weekend. From 10 mph to 60 mph in three weeks! I still take Ibuprofen, but much less. Thanks for your love and prayers.
ReplyDelete. Waseeley, you're thinking of CNAs*. Thank God for those pillow fluffers. I was in agony and they = she worked the bed and pillows to make me comfy. That was after my bypass in 1998.
ReplyDeleteRe Xxxxxxxx. I have to fill that space before pasting from docs. As has been mentioned, coding is routinely sloppy and paste button is next to publish button
UncleFred, I had PREsages.
Misty, we bought a 59 Ford which was no prize
OMK, why was Walt known as (The) hitman? Perhaps "Leaves of Grass" was code
Thx for the eclipse photos. Mr S said. "Robert will surely have great pix" He's not always wrong
…because the hospitals routinely test.

** As PK pointed out
As the apparent expert on low culture I must point out that Rose McIver is prettier than the picture posted. She is now starring in GHOSTS a fun show on CBS. Not beautiful it pretty
ReplyDeletePicard- Thanks for the lunar eclipse photos.
ReplyDeleteYR- Such great news about your recovery!
YR, great news! You must be made of stern stuff.
ReplyDeleteHi All!
ReplyDeleteNice puzzle, Bruce; thanks! Fun expo Boomer. Sorry to hear the surgery was postponed.
WOs: YOUR WE...Oops -> YOU'RE, put ARE in MAT's squares, ELAiNE
ESPs: ROSE as clued, ANNA
Fav: Bat out of HELL is a great song and album. It also featured "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."*

I had to look up YAUPS for the DR. Cute, OMK.
YR - Happy to hear you're healing quickly. Just, please, don't overdo it!
Jinx - Have you ever watched What Makes This Song Stink? [TV-MA (L)] I did enjoy Lynyrd Skynrd backing in your vid.
Re: Pizza - I was joking w/ WC. You do you. But you ain't wrong about lasagna.
LOL 'Keister', Ray-O. Youngest leaves for a summer program at John's Hopkins in a couple of weeks. 10 weeks to research what she wants and they give her $6k + room & board.
Picard - The girls & I watched the eclipse last night. I'm going to share your pics (Fantastic shots!) with the other space-nerds at work. Like Ray-O, my snaps were on my old iThing.
Y'all have a wonderful eve!
Cheers, -T

Anon at 5:42 was me, and I wanted to commend Robert for his photos and Owen for his poems, Ray-O for his mind, CED for not having one and the rest for your support of the blog and C.C. and Boomer
ReplyDeleteFIR. Thanks Bruce and Boomer! Sorry to hear about the delay.
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn’t do the eclipse. My tripod has a bum leg, and I didn’t want to take the chance. I got a full lunar eclipse many, many moons ago. I was going to go outside and take a look, but I got busy and forgot. All my photo buddies did well, though.
Great shots, Picard!
I did photograph the 2017 solar eclipse (in Franklin, KY). One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen! There’s another coming up in 2024, and I won’t have to go so far --- just west of Austin.
