We
had a busy week. On Monday, Boomer visited his traveling league and said
goodbyes to his longtime bowling buddies. On Tuesday he had another fall.
His legs just gave in while I tried to get him off the toilet seat.
Thankfully he did not get hurt. He was just a bit embarrassed to see the
same fire department guys who helped us last month.
On
Wednesday, the VA nurse removed the glucose monitor and the doc took
Metformin off his med list. On Thursday, the Headland Hospice started
the in-home hospice care and the Eucharistic Minister Bill Pavlik
visited him.
Then on Friday and Saturday, we received lots of birthday cards with sweet notes from you guys! Boomer said "I did not know I have so
many friends ..." He was surprised but delighted by your attention and love. We're only opening a few cards at a time so he can savor and have
something to look forward to every day. It's Boomer's goal to live past
January 1, 2023.

Boomer & His Friend Bill Whritenour, 10/17/2022 |
Good morning!
ReplyDeletePam gave us a simple theme, but d-o still needed an alphabet run to get the C in HACKING TRAIL. It was a short run. Wite-Out morphed ALOHA into HELLO. It was a nice Sunday morning romp. Thanx for the update on Boomer, C.C. (I continue to be amazed at Boomer's upbeat attitude.)
TERRAZZO -- In my ute our town's school had oak floors in the classrooms and TERRAZZO in the hallways. It burned down shortly after I graduated. Now the town has two schools, a grade school and high school, and has to join forces with a nearby town to come up with enough players for a football team.
TRINI -- He sang of the Lemon Tree, and wound up hanging in a different tree in The Dirty Dozen.
ONE GNAT STAND is on another level of wackiness compared to the other theme answers, loved it. I really enjoyed BRITISH PRAM MINISTER and HACKING TRAIL as well.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem as D-O, starting with “Aloha” instead of “Hello.” And there were several proper names that I didn’t know, but the perps were kind. Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.
ReplyDeleteFIR, but erased TIVo (and I wear TIVAs), pen for STY, wok for MOO, kellog[g] for his rival C. W. POST, ette for ENNE, scrub for ABORT, and rinds for SEEDS.
ReplyDeleteMY GOD! I thought religion was taboo here!
I've been to EL RIO but don't remember much about it. IIRC, it is in southern Ventura County, just off PCH.
I finished Cell by Robin Cook last night. Interesting fiction with an all-too-real connection to the need to reduce medical costs. The app is called iDOC.
Thanks to Pam for another gem. And thanks to CC for the tour, and the Boomer update. I'm betting on him to achieve his goal.
Jinx 8:11 AM Prohibition of the R word applies only to commenters. As it has been around since the beginning of time, constructors often user it, and then we bloggers have to dance around it.
DeleteGood Morning:
ReplyDeleteI’m always pleased to see Pam’s byline on any day but I think she should be crowned Queen of Sundays because her puzzles are above average Sunday fare and always an enjoyable solve. Today’s theme was fun and easy to see based on the title and the first themer, British Pram Minister, which was my favorite. Sort of timely, as well, what with the turmoil across the pond. There were only two unknowns, Teva and Macy Gray, which is evidence of the absence of the usual Sunday onslaught of proper names and I also had only two w/os, Aloha/Hello and Idiom/Axiom, which is evidence of a pretty straightforward grid, IMO. Bro/Gro/Cho tickled my fancy. Add the very low three letter word count and I say, “Well done, once again, Pam.”
Thanks, Pam, for an enjoyable and satisfying solve and thanks, CC, for your expert guidance. Thanks, also, for keeping us up to date on the daily challenges and adversities you’re both enduring. Much love to you both.
Alas, there is no joy in Troyville today. 😢
Have a great day.
Irish Miss @9:02 AM It'll be interesting to see how the new PRAM MINISTER deals with the MELEE stirred up by the last one, QEII's last and Bonnie King Charley 's first
DeleteMuch easier than yesterday. FIR today. Thanks, Pam, for a fun puzzle with a theme easy to get!
ReplyDeleteHELLO was a bit of a slowdown as well as RHINO, HASTY and STOCK. (Misty could spin a story with these words.) Not many other WOs.
Thanks, C.C., for the review and update on Boomer. He does have a great attitude, and now you have more help. My very best wishes.
Wishing you all a nice Sunday.
JINX IN NORFOLK, is the new Robin Cook(book) as good as COMA? And, "my God" is an interjection with no religious attachment.
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoy the Sunday CW’s, they usually have feel of an early week puzzle and Pam is an expert at constructing those! DNK’s included TEVA (Ive never worn sandals), DAVIS, ROZ, CHO, TOBY, and ENNE (still really don’t understand that one), but the perps were friendly as I had the grid filled in 20 minutes but didn’t get the congratulatory message so I knew I had a mistake which took me 6 more minutes to locate, had to change the C to a K in the KOLA/KEFIR. Done without help so I guess it’s a FIR. Thanks Pam for the enjoyable Sunday solve.
ReplyDeleteC.C. ~~ very nice expo today, and thanks for the updates on Boomer, with all the adversity he’s facing, all the photos you post he always has a big beaming smile!
FLN — Anon T ~~ thanks for explaining just how collaborations are done!
Also FLN ~~ The last post was by Anonymous (not the two or three we recognize from their comments), complained about the difficulty of yesterday’s puzzle, Saturday’s are not supposed to be a walk in the park, but to make you think and work, those are the most enjoyable for me anyway.
FIR, but struggled for a bit with the area around "hacking". Macy Gray finally came to me and the speedbump was behind me.
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all! Real challenge from Pam with amusing theme entry. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI started with HELLO expecting it to turn red. Was elated when it didn't. ALso plugged in AXIOM first & surprised it was right. However, there were a lot of unknowns & maybes elsewhere.
Thanks for a great expo, C.C. You are amazing with your care for Boomer. Most people with Boomer's problems just stay at home and hope old friends visit them. Such a strong will to go and say goodbye to his friends. How could we not love him and you? I'm glad you have some help now. Continuing my prayers for you both.
Musings
ReplyDelete-Pam’s puzzles are so fun and she seems to always have a big finish. After I had the clue for the Blarney Stone and NOSE, I immediately finished with NOSE TO THE GRAND STONE!
-A “C” error/Natick at _OLA/_EFIR was no big deal. As constructor Malaika Handa told us, “It’s a game not a test!”
-Golf courses use this very simple Stimpmeter to measure how fast the ball rolls on a GREEN
-The Mar-A-Lago mansion that is so “in the news” today was built in the 1920’s by CW POST’s heiress Marjorie Post. Mar-A-Lago is Spanish for “sea to lake”.
-Some say PARLAY bets are foolish. Picking one NFL winner is hard enough and trying to get two or more also is very difficult but can be fun if you only bet EXCESS money.
-I suspect most who use the OTT center have no idea of who he was
Really enjoyable CW today. It was fun, clever, and very few obscure proper nouns.
ReplyDeleteWaseeley - you might have been too far away to notice, but my tongue was placed firmly in my cheek.
ReplyDeleteAGM - It's been so long since I read Coma that I won't compare them. But it was really good. I thought I had it figured out until the last hundred pages.
Phil - Think of the way males sexist pigs used to refer to female comedians as comediennes and female drum majors as majorettes. Glad I never said such things. That I remember. (I do say "kitchenette", though.) Also, you are much nicer than I am. I was going to tell the last anon yesterday that I'm glad they don't dumb down the Saturday offerings to his/her level (or my level, for that matter).
CC Thank you for the update on Boomer. Too bad about his fall. But good that he is making the rounds to say goodbye to his friends. And very pleased that we are able to bring a bit of joy to him for his 75th birthday. He certainly brings much joy to us.
ReplyDeleteCCI also do not drink milk. I have never liked the taste or the consistency.
Fun theme. Some crazy proper name clusters to grumble about but FIR. Learning moment about meaning of TEVA. My friend's daughter is named TIARE. It is a South Pacific word meaning "flower". The painting title is "Woman with a Flower". You will recognize "Vahine" for its similarity to the Hawaiian word "wahine".
I was privileged to see ISABEL ALLENDE speak here on two occasions.
I love this expression I captured on ISABEL ALLENDE's face when I saw her in 2017.
She said she is asked how she comes up with all of the crazy people and stories for her novels. She said that her secret is that they are based on real people and events in her life!
Of course, she admits she got a career boost because of her family name. Her father was first cousin to Salvador Allende, former president of Chile. The CIA helped overthrow his government, resulting in many years of brutal dictatorship.
From Yesterday:
ReplyDeleteLucina, AnonT, Wilbur Charles Thank you for the kind words about my photos of us at the LADY DI memorial in Paris.
The flame looks like a fitting memorial for her. When I was first taken there by a friend years ago he "enlightened" me to the fact that the flame was already there!
Edward Los Angeles:
ReplyDelete56D. My son’s middle name is Kiefer,as in Southerland.
117A. I spent a week in Elko one day.
How did I miss Boomers birthday?
ReplyDeleteI thought it was the 27th for some reason...
Be it too soon or belated,
I hope you have/had a very happy birthday Boomer.
Learning moment: Stimpmeter (HG@11:14)
If this intrigues you as much as it did me, you can learn more about it here...
Hola!
ReplyDeleteC.C., thank you for the photo of Boomer. He smiles even in adversity. Good for him!
The puzzle was a typical Sunday slow slog but quite enjoyable. I don't know which pun I enjoyed most. They are all amusing.
I had no idea that Isabel ALLENDE wrote ZORRO! I only know the movie.
And PARLAY came to me only because so many commercials about betting are currently airing.
Tony ROMO'S Restaurant closed several years ago and I miss it. It was a great place to eat ribs!
I love a LINEN suit but yes, it wrinkles immediately.
I'll take a CSO at FOUR Corners which is partially in my state. Of course, it's mandatory to take a photo with arms and legs touching them.
CSO to our friend, TRINI, who died this month. No, not that TRINI. She was my sister, Yolanda's best friend in high school. I guess I already mentioned that.
Today I missed going to church because last night I was running a low fever but feel better today. I was afraid it was something worse. My s-i-l, as I mentioned, has Covid and he was here a few days ago.
Have a wonderful day, everyone! Every day is a gift!
I should mention that the name, TRINI, from La Santa Trinidad (the Holy Trinity) is a common Spanish name for men or women. Our friend, Trini's full name is Trinidad.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the creative theme answers - Pam definitely has a knack with puzzle themes. They all brought a smile.
ReplyDeleteSince I had the starting T - TERRAZZO was a gimme, as that is what they call the center area at USAFA where my son attended. There are tiled areas with marble strip boundaries where the entire cadet wing can assemble. When a cadet is a first year (called a doolie), they can only walk on the marble strips and not diagonally across the Terrazzo, and they must hold their backpack at their sides until Recognition in March.
https://www.dvidshub.net/image/5825569/us-air-force-academy-noon-meal-formation.
Thanks CC - glad Boomer can enjoy the cards over time!
Best wishes Boomer. Card's in the mail.
ReplyDeleteI completed it easily today after a late start but I hate to call it a FIR if I have to make two WAGS on intersecting unknowns. CHO & HOLI and KEFIR & DAVIS. The missing 'I' was apparent from the BRITISH PRAM MINISTER and the UK is also missing a PRIME MINISTER. Who's next?
SODA SHOP- new term for me. I'd only heard of Soda FOUNTAIN or MALT SHOP.
TEVA- I only know of it as a drug company.
OLSON or OLSEN- wait for the perp.
Usual spattering of A&E unknowns filled by perps. MACY GRAY, TOBY, RALPH, SARAH, WATTS, ARMED, ROZ,
C.W. POST- KELLOG would have also fit.
TERRAZZO- lucky to spell it correctly, wondering if would be RR or ZZ- it had both. You never know with Italian words.
I'm playing in a Halloween pickleball tourney Wed. at MEL OTT Park's gym. We ate at Mandina's Restaurant yesterday in NOLA. Today wasn't a lucky day. I got a nail in my bike tire at mile 16 of a 31 mile ride. Picked up a ribbed nail that ruined the tire.
Sunday Lurk say...
ReplyDeleteCED - If I'm not wrong, Boomer's BD is Tuesday (at least that's when my card is guaranteed there).
LOL Stimpmeter video. I gotta do that at Pop's house -- built b/f Lincoln was Prez - old maps show it as only one of three on the North End of SPI.
//You have to know every squeak in the floor & the steps to get up to bed w/o him getting up.
BigE - There's nothing worse than SAG'n' out on a charity ride. Been there. Glad you didn't get hurt flattening out.
Lucina - sorry to hear your down. Do you have a finger PulseOx? If so, use it. If not, I'll send you one. You may have Covid [see: SIL*] and the device will help you know if it's 911 time or not.
I'm not joking... Your heart will go funny. DW had >130bpm w/ O2 at 95 and I had 162bpm but O2 stayed over 98.
It's not like it was a contest... But I won ;-)
Boomer - you keep truckin' I know you feel weak, just take it slow even as your mind moves faster than your body. We love you.
Cheers, -T
*Pop got it for the 1st time ~12 days ago. I think he changed his mind that it's actually not just a flu.
DNF. Just couldn't get Kansas to work out....
ReplyDeletePam: Thanks for giving us such and enjoyable Sunday puzzle. I liked your clever title. I wonder, did you first think of the title then create the puzzle or did the puzzle come first? Also, kudos for putting ENDS at the end!
C.C.: Thanks for your expo and update. I cannot imaging how many cards you and Boomer will receive! Everyone loves you guys and wants to help.
I've worn TEVAs for years. They are great for kayaking and also the velcro makes them easy to attach to the outside of my backpack (keeps the inside clean). It's so nice to pull off hiking shoes at the end of the day and slip into my TEVAs.
I had to laugh at BOATS. Coasties prefer we call them "ships".
HELLO. Thank you, Pam, and thank you C.C.
ReplyDeleteThat r in MArY GRAY was my last fill. No Congrats message. I shoulda paid attention to the theme and the perps. Too tired. I stayed up too late watching the Penn State Nittany Lions / Minnesota Golden Gophers game which was played in White Out conditions* at Beaver Stadium in Happy Valley. What a sight to see.
D-O, funny you should mention TRINI in the context of "The Dirty Dozen". Yesterday or the day before, a DJ and the on-air sidekicks started talking about the movie The Dirty Dozen and the tough guy characters. One of them said something to the efect of, "Yeah, all of those tough guys, and then there's Trini Lopez. Why him ? No other tough guy characters available, so they picked him ? How does he fit ?"
* Interestingly enough, the White Out tradition started in blue, as "Operation Visine" (to "get the red out"). It was in response to a concern that Nebraska fans would have a "sea of red" in the stands for a big 2002 game. It worked. The Nittany Lions upset #7 Nebraska by a wide margin.
I didn't get "flag" clue and "tire" answer. Can anyone explain?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for a delightful Sunday puzzle, Pam. And thank you for your always helpful commentary, C.C., and for your update on sweet Boomer, whose smile just always warms my heart. Give him our love and I too will pray that he makes it well into 2023.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the puzzle and all the critters made me happy, as they always do: the BOAR, the RHINO, the GNAT, the DOE, and the ELKo. And I'm glad they were supplied with homes: a LAIR, a STY, and of course the GREENS they need in order to get on their HACKING TRAIL. It's tough for them to get to stay in a MOTEL or an ARENA, after all. Anyway, I'm sure they're all out there saying MOO in thanks for including them in the puzzle.
Not all was happy with the folks in this puzzle, however. Some appeared to be CAGEY and HASTY, prone to giving each other BLAME when they were in a SNIT, and one of them even turning out to be a LIAR. Their RANTs sometimes set off the CAR ALARM when they were having fits of TEMPer.
MY GOD, they NEED to calm down and go to the SODA SHOP and order a NACHO and a bottle of wine to open with a CORK. That would get them all into a much happier PHASE of their lives.
On that encouraging note, I wish you all a great Sunday, and a great week ahead.
Judy @ 5:27. I copied this from Macmillian Dictionary:
ReplyDeleteFLAG: (verb) to become TIREd or weak, or to begin to lack enthusiasm
After a long day, his energy flagged.
The conversation was flagging until the mention of her name.
I hope that helps!
I loved this puzzle and chuckled at the theme clues/answers. Very enjoyable. The last time HOLI was in the puzzle I didn't expect I'd remember it but remember it I did. On the other hand, I did not remember KEFIR until after it filled. Like Big Easy, I only knew of TEVA as a drug company. Like Picard, the meaning of TEVA was a learning moment for me. Like Lucina, I had no idea that Isabel Allende wrote ZORRO. LW and I know PALO Alto very well; we used to live there and still sometimes go there to a coffee shop or restaurant. Our car, being a hybrid, doesn't have a TACH. NACHO makes me think of Ol'Man Keith's dog. As for TESLAS, I think they are really poorly made cars and their software makes them truly dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of Boomer. His honorable character shines clearly and he radiates dignity. I'm so glad you have gotten in-home hospice care started. May he ring in the new year.
Good wishes to you all.
Sum, I'd be surprised if the knee-deepers have more ships than RIBs, which are certainly boats.
ReplyDeleteJace, your hybrid needs a tach as much as much as most new cars need it, meaning not at all. The only thing I think they are useful for is to tell if a quiet, smooth engine is running. The computer shifts at the right points on the power curve, and won't let the driver over-rev the engine even in neutral.
Super Sunday. Thanks for the fun, Pam and C.C.
ReplyDeleteI FIRed in good time, and saw the theme immediately with that BRITISH PRAM MINISTER. (Yes the timing of that phrase was appropriate!). All the other themers brought a smile.
Late to the party, and WEES by now.
I smiled to see IBM and ATM.
Dad joke wouldn’t fit. OK- BOD.
Recently, we had Allende’s A Long Petal of the Sea, and I mentioned (YR too) that I had read her new book Violeta. ZORRO I have not read. It was published in 2005. Great photo Picard. I think I remember seeing it in the past.
Lucina- please take care and monitor your condition.
AnonT- hope your Pop is recovering well.
C.C.- glad to see Boomer’s smile, and good to hear of increased help for you both. I hope my card makes it across the border! 2023 is a worthy goal.
Wishing you all a great evening.
You're hanging tough Boomer. What an inspiration. Really enjoyed the puzzle and the theme. Well done. Ends with Ends, perfect.
ReplyDeleteAnother long Sunday. Yesterday Betsy bought geese and guinea hens. Bought feed today and of course my T B Times.
ReplyDeletePerfect Difficulty level after yesterday's. Got stuck in Cali with eland/RHINO. It's a good sign when write-up reveals clues I completely missed like ENNE??(Trix?)
Last fill was C for MACY and HACKING TRAIL
WC
Could you please post your mail address to send a card. I know it was here before, but I can't find it.
ReplyDeleteContinued prayers for Boomer and CC. Keep your spirits up and push for your goal. Rooting for you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tony. No, I don't have one but Mark does and I can borrow it. Right now I feel normal and nothing feels hot to the touch. Usually, Tylenol is enough for me and that is what I took last night. My darling niece, Regina, brought me some chicken soup and my daughter and her husband came to see me so all that alone immediately perked me up. I'll continue the hot soup regimen.
ReplyDeleteThank you, all, for your concern.
I'm troubled by the fill: NOSE TO THE GRAND STONE. Beisng half Irish, I actually HAVE KISSED the Blarney Stone. Sorry, but the staff there frowns at any nose that dare touch their national treasure...and this ain't a bunch of blarney!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for steering me to the address, WC!
ReplyDelete
