I don’t have a problem with any of the themed answers except perhaps the one that is a take-off on “over-bake.” Does anyone actually say “over-bake”? I’ve heard of “overcook” but not “over-bake” and, in fact, autocorrect won’t even let me type it as one word! Other than that, I have no quarrel with this puzzle that seemed quite clever. FIR, so I’m happy.
ReplyDeleteEuripides enjoyed attending the ODEA,
ReplyDeleteWhere he got the GERM of an IDEA.
MEDEA's tragedy,
Killing her progeny,
Like Euri would do to the brats behind him, mama mia!
WADE had a WILD DRIVE in a RACER!
Shouldn't have had beer with a VODKA chaser!
The ride was over,
Now Wade's in clover --
In the Cemetery of Saint Francis Xavier.
Very clean grid. Highlights include ITSASNAP, MAKEAWISH, DEEPSIGH, ASCIIART (!). Great clue on that last one, but I already had ASCII in place so it didn't mislead me. Most of the puzzle fell quickly but the SW took some work, with several one-word clues, unknowns LEFAY SIMMS STILLME, and a clue on TIGERS that could've been anything for me due to my terrible sports knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI didn't manage to FIR. The cross of two unknowns- YOGINI & LEFAY- I just left blank. Nothing made sense, but somehow I managed to fill ILDIVO, ASCII ART, and ASAND completely by perps, having never heard of any of those five. I knew of ASCII from having to fool with our IBM system 50+ years ago but not of the ART.
ReplyDelete25A had me wondering if I could spell EDIFY. REY was unknown and I couldn't think of Do It Yourself for DIY KIT and thought maybe it was a DYE KIT for "dyeing the kitten. DIY KITTEN was filled because REE didn't seem as good as REY.
No SNIVEL from me. I liked the puzzle and the theme. The ridiculous words? No.
WACO, PIGEON, STILL ME, VODKA, REY, BAO- unknowns filled by perps
BOHO, NAS, K-POP- words I learned from crossword puzzles.
103. Trawling need: NET. Steve's father-in-law was a fisherman for many years. Ditto for DW's dad. He would fish on his day's off and would waste an hour trawling for his own bait. Diane warned me and said to buy some before we launched. When I went to buy some at the marina, the owner didn't sell any to me because he knew my F-I-L would always get his own.
Took 17:42 today.
ReplyDeleteThings I didn't know: Ildivo, lefay, asciiart, nivea, the pigeon, yogini, stillme, Medea, noor, and some chessmaster ... from India.
Thanks to crosswords, I knew today's actress (Kat).
Interesting to see Glam Rock intersect K Pop, and having Mr. Sulu and Solo (alas, not Han) in the same puzzle.
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteI don't normally give up on a crossword, but today I did. I found this one to be a fun sponge. Sorry, Garrett. Thanx for the explanation of all the things I didn't know, C.C. (I think your neighbor is right. A dog or cat in your household could be a very positive addition. You might try fostering a pet from the local shelter, just to see how it works out.)
FIR, but surprised myself doing so. Lots of unknowns, too many too mention, and many proper names. Luckily the perps and a few WAG's saw me through. I found this to be a tad crunchy for a Sunday puzzle.
ReplyDeleteThe picture shown for 33 across is of a Vacouver Canuck, should be of a Buffalo Sabre. Just being picky.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite answer: WISE KRAKEN
ReplyDeleteAlso, almost forgotten these days: ASCII ART
I had to give up on the SW corner, but got everything else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Musings
ReplyDelete- I didn’t even bother to guess at LEFA_/_OGINI. SIGH… These are in Garret’s vocab?
-FB schools these days have to spend big bucks to get FIVE-STAR recruits. After those recruits SIT IDLE, they transfer ASAP.
-Some school stockpile FIVE-STARS and are still SANS championships
-FLAT SODA is my lovely bride’s sure-fire cure for an upset tummy
-Too many of our past posters have GONE DARK
-2” of rain last week over came one of our DRIEST springs
-A 98% teetotaler like me couldn’t make the VODKA connection
-STILL ME – My 100-yr-old MIL with Alzheimer’s lets us know occasionally
-TTP, I appreciated how you were able to GO INTO Blogger’s filter process.
-An exchange with a colleague, “Gary, will you go get me some absence pads?” “What’s the magic word. Valeda?” “NOW!” :-). I really miss her.
FIW. Went with anON for 37A, which gave me CaPS for 31D. Didn't check 32D even tho I had COP PERFECTCUBAN and SCALE. DUH!!!
ReplyDeleteFilling SIMMS broke the SW and changing REtREatS to REDRESS fixed the NE. Not much trouble in the SW. Came together fairly quickly.
Thanks C.C. for your analysis for today and to Garrett, congratulations on your debut.
Anon@9:18 -- That's a photo of Splynter, our former Saturday Sherpa. It wasn't meant to be a photo of a Sabre.
ReplyDeleteWhy do I seem to remember Splynter was an Islander fan?
ReplyDelete(Maybe I'm biased..)
I will never forget Bill G, he tracked me down during hurricane Sandy to see if I was all right!
(And I thought I was incognito...)
These are the crosswords that make me think I have dementia, when the clues don't make any sense, until you see the answer.
In the end? I never saw it coming...
Just an aside:
ReplyDeleteI have been raving for years about a flight sim game that I play online with others. I know this crowd is not into it, but I was always still looking for a short video that might convey the graphics, and how amazing they are...
This short video, was created (with about 3 headshots of actual pilots, and clip of a real dashboard gauge) entirely from a video game. Check out the realism of IL2Sturmovik, Battle of Britain gameplay.
Of course you need a fast computer, joystick, an IR headset that enables you to look in 3 dimensions, and also know everything that is needed to know in how to fly a real plane...
With discord, you can talk to teammates (and enemies) all over the world in real time. (Who needs a Ham radio anymore?)
Anywho,
In order to justify the above babbling on a crossword blog ,
Let's just say about this post, that:
This is the end...
Nice puzzle until I got naticked at the Lefay/Yogini crossing.
ReplyDeleteZhouqin Thank you for the BAO learning moment. In Southeast Asia I have seen BAO on the menu; did not realize that is incomplete in Chinese. Always a good snack on the run.
ReplyDeleteFIW with cross of unknowns CRAKEN/CAT which seemed just as good. Amusing and challenging theme. I think clue for YOGINI is just wrong. A YOGINI is a practitioner, not a LEADER. A SWAMI is a LEADER.
Here I had the privilege of asking questions about the nature of reality to a famed SWAMI as part of my odd work at UC Santa Barbara.
I placed this on YouTube to share with one friend. I was astonished that it received over 5,000 views. They weren't coming to watch me. I was tongue-tied, but he was amazingly clear in his answers.
Always good to see SULU as a Star Trek reference.
Echoing previous comments:
ReplyDeleteWise Krakan was our favorite.
Lefay and Yogini natick was a WAG.
Bob Lee, your ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is great!
Now, for some reason, I feel like listening to The Doors.
Hola!
ReplyDeleteI have just barely enough time to say I finished the puzzle and enjoyed it immensely especialy now, knowing that it was constructed by such a young person!
Thank you, C.C., for your ever enjoyable analysis.
I am so with you on the loneliness of missing your spouse. If you have friends that you can go out with please do so. Go to lunch or sightseeing or whatever interests you. A pet sounds like a good idea. That is something to look after and care about.
Have a lovely Sunday, everyone! After church I plan to go for a long walk and enjoy this beautiful spring weather.
DNF. This one was way beyond my horizon. Even after giving up and turning on the red letters, it was still a chore. Too much unknown trivia. (For me, anyhow!) Different brain frequency, I guess.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I FIW, I appreciate that an 18 year old didn’t bombard us with current stuff, known only/mainly by his age group. He gave us a nice variety of topics, so my errors had nothing to do with not being up to date enough. My biggest faux pas was caps/CUPS, then confidently put Anon/UPON, so I couldn’t see OPEC. Really dumb. I am a King Arthur enthusiast, so Morgan Le Fay was known to me, but not YOGINI.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Garret, and hope to see you again.
C.C., loved your tour, as always. I didn’t know K-Pop, but after watching your clip, I’m a fan!
Sunday Lurk say...
ReplyDeleteBigE - 50+ years ago? IBM? Sure that wasn't EBCDIC and not ASCII?
Had I done this puzzle, ASCII ART would have been my fav (where does an 18yro Garret learn about this nowadays?)
Bob Lee - I think you used UTF-32 for your shrug ;-)
HG - LOL Valeda. And, yes, I too miss some of The Corner regulars.
CED - remember when my 1st (w/ C.C.'s copious help) crossword was published? I was no longer Anonymous.
Also, there's OSINT (Open Source Intel). No one online is safely anon.
//discord is fun - our defcon channels' #drunkposings are hilarious.
Picard - you've linked to that before and it's still trippy. I'm going to need a nap.
MManatee - You can run, but you can't hide. No one here gets out alive. #Doors
C.C. - my love your way. We too miss Boomer but we're glad you're here.
Cheers, -T
FLN - Jinx, thanks for your comment about sailing. When we were in Arizona, Jack’s family was into ski boats and power boats - I wish I’d thought of bringing our sailboat and enjoying it on Lake Pleasant! It’s name was East of the Sun.
ReplyDeleteAnonT Thanks for the SWAMI comment. I realized after I posted it that I had shared it before. I try to keep things fresh and new. Glad you still found it trippy!
ReplyDeleteHere my friend John and his son Jimmy struggled to launch a KITE with no UPDRAFTS at our big KITE Festival last weekend!
Zhouqin I will be a curmudgeon and agree with you and disagree with your neighbors and friends here regarding pet ADOPTION. I consider a dog or cat to be a prison without walls. They keep people from getting out of the house and going to events and travelling, where they can meet new people. I have also written about the enormous negative environmental impacts they have.
I am well aware that saying such things is utterly taboo.
Zhouqin You are bright, attractive and very interesting. You will not be alone long unless you choose that option.
Creative theme and debut by Garrett today- fun having all the changed endings sound like the "-in" in the title "In the End", but none of them actually ended in the letters IN.
ReplyDeleteI had heard of a YOGI but didn't know that YOGINI was the feminine form. I got to YOGI and then waited for perps for the last 2 letters. It sounds like a portmanteau for a frozen yogurt/ martini
Also waited for perps to know whether the Pixar fish was DORY or NEMO.
SNIVEL to me sounds like an onomatopoeia word.
SubG - we always had to tell my mom not to OVERBAKE the brownies or cookies so some didn't end up as hockey pucks.
This Midwestern gal first had BAO at college (yummers), our campus had some theme dorms or houses for different languages that you could take and the people in the house often had a 1-2 nights a week where you could either take out or sit down for a meal of that cuisine as a way to raise funds for house activities. One of them was at the Asian theme house where most of the menu items were Chinese or Japanese. Also first time I had eaten Crepes Suzette at LaMaison Francais. None of the pop-up restaurants survive on campus now - but some of the theme dorms/houses still do.
KPOP have some high energy music -my cardio dance instructor likes to use their music in her routines. The training for these groups for months to years sounds grueling and not the healthiest for young people (10 hours a day for 6 days a week generally)
https://www.theguardian.com/global/2020/mar/29/behind-k-pops-perfect-smiles-and-dance-routines-are-tales-of-sexism-and-abuse
Thanks CC for the blog and Garrett for the puzzle!
C.C., I have to agree with Picard that pets are not a good idea for everyone, especially if you aren't used to having pets. We always had cats & dogs on the farm and still had some when my husband died. In the end they caused me more work and heartbreak when they died. When I moved to the city, I fed an outdoor cat left without a home by a neighbor who moved away. He kept the rodent population controlled in return, but died an awful death. I'm happier without a pet now.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Garrett, for a challenging puzzle which took just under an hour to maneuver thru. Filled most of it then went back & filled unknowns with red-letter help.
ReplyDeleteThanks, C.C., for continuing to provide us with the blog and for letting us know you are hanging in there. Think of you often in your sad time.
Wow. I still haven't gone for my walk and it's so nice out.
ReplyDeletePicard:
As usual I enjoyed your photos of the kite show. It reminds me of one in Hawaii many years ago. They have one every year and I was amazed at all the different kinds of kites available! My late DH bought one and assembled it for the show. Wind is never far away on the Islands and that day was just right. So much fun.
YOGINI is a new term for me as is AEROBAT. BOHO also puzzled me.
Ok. I just looked it up. BOHO is Bohemian, that is, loose fitting, casual clothing.
ReplyDeleteDidn't do yesterday's puzzle. Today's had some stuff I liked and some stuff I didn't like, some stuff I knew or was able to figure out, and some stuff I didn't know and could not figure out, therefore had to look up. I give it a 6 out of 10.
ReplyDeleteHooray for Vikings purple!
Read y'all later.
FIR, somehow. Three WAGged Naticks, and a couple of SWAGs. Final guess was LEFAY x YOGINI. Five erased entries, but who cares.
ReplyDeleteBut I finally recognize BTS, so I got that goin' for me.
I knew Phil SIMMS because he played his college ball in my little town, and I went to (crossword-favorite nose wrinklier) ElHi at the laboratory school on the University's campus.
Wendybird, Phoenix weather is probably better suited to skiing than for sailing. Except for some of us who were addicted to racing.
Arrived in our in-the-middle-of-nowhere campground outside of Williamston, NC. Tomorrow, on to Myrtle Beach.
Congrats to Garrett on his LAT debut! I liked your puzzle! I had a one-square FIW at EL?DED / I?DIVO. FAVs: Animal shelter goal, Girl scout outfit?, and DIASPORA.
ReplyDeleteSeeing "groom" as a verb took me a bit.
C.C. Thank you for your write-up. You are always very encouraging of new constructors! As always, your food pics make my mouth water....
My heart went out to you when I read 83 Down. You did such a wonderful job of taking care of Boomer. It sounds like you are suffering from Decision Overload. It's a real thing. I wish you could see yourself as we see you -- strong, smart, caring. You ARE taking care of yourself. One day at a time. I have heard that one should not make any major decisions for 18 months after losing a spouse. Adopting a pet is a major decision. I like D-Otto@7:52 's fostering idea or perhaps volunteering at your local shelter. I know you'll figure it out.
Puzzling thoughts:
ReplyDeleteFIW - just as sumdaze @ 4:30 - with the Natick of IL DIVO and ELIDED
It took me awhile to suss the theme; C.C.'s recap summed it up the best!
FLN, Irish Miss ~
ReplyDeleteYou may be right! It never occurred to me that my brief mention of the Irish Republican Army might have been responsible for automatic CENSORSHIP.
While I doubt that was the reason, I cannot discount it entirely. Thank you for bringing it up.
Who knows what goes on in that mindless artificial mind?
I guess we'll know the IRA is anathema--IF this posting gets zapped!
~ OMK
There are pros and cons re pet adoption. I do not have one but a good friend who just lost his wife says their dog gets him up and out of the house when he would otherwise stay in. Plus she gives him a lot of love. Just sayin!
ReplyDeleteFLN #2, Irish Miss ~
ReplyDeleteI started to add this as a 2nd part to my post above @4:51. But then I reckoned this might cause both parts to get CENSORED, so I'm posting it here, separately.
Ω
Whoever is in charge of the crew that creates the CENSORING algorithms should have learned by now that the appropriate way of discharging their hateful task is NOT to automatically remove postings that include certain words or phrases BUT to flag these items for REVIEW by a human brain.
And not just any mortal brain but one that can draw upon experience and intelligence to exercise their power judiciously.
I do not envy anyone such a "power," as there will always be a gap between an author's intention and readers' reception. There is no way one can account for others' intercommunication--not in a manner that can satisfy everyone.
Best to leave such operations to judges and "official" agencies (including mass media), as only they carry the kind of authority that backs up a message and, in effect, "sells" it as a "truth."
As for these blogs, what does it matter if somebody gets little upset? C'est la vie, eh?
Just post a general "trigger warning" if there's a chance of drawing trolls...
~ OMK
Hand up for proper name bebogglement (if there’s such a word…). Favorite clue: Sea food > PLANKTON 🤙🏽😎

Re" K-POP
ReplyDeleteYou may have already heard that one of their group, Moon Bin died at the age of 25. Cause of death was not announced but it's distressing to know that one of such a young age has died.
I waited too long for my walk and forgot water! Tsk. Tsk. So I had to cut it short and come home.
Poor: You become a prisoner of your pet.
ReplyDeleteBetter: Pets are amazing and great comfort to many people but my lifestyle is such that I could not give a pet the time and care it deserves.
Keith, I have to agree that simply having your posting deleted does nothing to inform you, or anybody, why it was deleted. So it is impossible for you not to inadvertently commit the same "crime" again, not knowing what the "crime" was in the first place. IMO it would be far better for a human moderator to point out what in your post was unacceptable so that you can learn not to use the same terminology again, or to disguise it as I did with the word Pr0$t!tute (in describing what Violetta's profession was in La Traviata).
ReplyDeleteAgain, the LAT editors allow constructors to "endorse" products, TV shows, TV networks, cars, etc.in their clues. I count over 70 such clues in this puzzle alone. I tossed this ad-packed entry after three hours of struggle. A true waste of my time! Shame on you!!
ReplyDeleteLucina, you were right about that Osage County Meryl Streep movie. I tried to watch it tonight but had to turn it off. Watching humans be hateful to each other is not my cup of tea. If there was redeeming value in the end, I didn't get to it. It's disappointing because it had an A-TEAM cast.
ReplyDeleteI had gamer/RACER; cans/CUPS
ReplyDeleteOops, I never rechecked Courteney COX and EXPO. Worst excuse ever? Dull pen. Couldn't read my writing.
I had SABer knowing it was RE but I knew GLAM ROCK
The Cape Cod is VODKA and cranberry juice
In the Arthurian tradition Morgan LeFay was the nemesis of Merlin. I just Googled "The Adventures of Sir Lancelot" as I recalled there being an Arthurian TV Series. It was 56-57. No Morgan LeFay in the episodes
WC
Lots of white but it all got filled. I just bought new pens at the $ Store. When I'm at my bank or various other other businesses I usually lift a pen but I find those won't last an entire xword
The Seattle NHL Team is The Krakens
Did someone mention Sir Lancelot?. //WC - this is on you :-)
ReplyDeleteKPOP: DW's friend was front for a band in the mid-90's called K-Pop. Nothing Korean about them.
DW's buddy, small as she was, had a hell of a voice. They put out one CD that was a little under-produced but still very good (yes, I have it).
They were just a college (Boomer Sooner!) band that broke up after everyone got their MSs & PhDs and moved on. I wish I could find a link to share their grungy music but the internet is littered with real KPop.
//if you really want to hear it, email me and I'll send you an mp3.
Cheers, -T
During one of my phases a few years ago I was an avid fan of Arthurian legends. I devoured Mary Stewart's novels and even stayed up one summer night reading an entire book by her. I just could not put it down!
ReplyDeleteThe last one I read (I think) was The mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Lately I've been thinking of rereading some of the many books I have and that would be a good one to start with.
Picard @ 2:11: "I have also written about the enormous negative environmental impacts they [pets] have."
ReplyDeleteMore so than humans?
Puzzled thru most of it with the same unknowns as others. One gripe, "NYC hrs should be EDT, If EST, then "NYC winter hrs. Enjoyed the recap CC. You have trouble with some English, boy I'd hate to think I had to do a puzzle in any other language. GC
ReplyDeleteJayce @ 7:45 PM said, "IMO it would be far better for a human moderator to point out what in your post was unacceptable so that you can learn not to use the same terminology again..."
ReplyDeleteWell Jayce, if you had read what I wrote on Friday and Saturday, you would have seen in the first two sentences of the 2nd paragraph, "Can't be certain though. Blogger doesn't tell us."
So how can the moderator (as you call them) "point our what was unacceptable" if the moderator doesn't know for absolute certainty. Did you not understand what I meant when I wrote "Blogger doesn't tell us." ? Let me try another way. They don't indicate, in any form or fashion, why the comment was filtered.
And, as I further explained in my comments, sometimes comments (even one word comments) end up in the filter for no apparent reason.
If you think you could do better, step up to the plate and convince CC that you should be an admin on her blog. I'd gladly let you handle all of the issues that arise because of Blogger's AI filtering.
