  1. (Folks, even though I said I was going to give up posting first every morning, I have a special reason to post early this morning. And that is to post a message early to an old friend. To wit:)

Well, SS. You know how much I like you. You’re “anonymous” but you
    have a warm heart.
You usually only post once a day and don’t come back to look at the rest of it, so you probably missed what I posted yesterday.
    Here it is.

You want to know something , folks ?
This isn’t as easy to give up as I might first have thought.
Perhaps a “compromise” is in order.
What if you don’t expect me to post every day, and certainly not FIRST every day, but only when and if I feel like it?
    Would THAT be okay ?
That’s what I’m thinking now, anyway.
This community is too delightful to give up “cold turkey.”
I’m pretty sure the Lord will understand. He wants me to be happy, after all.
    Right?
Anyway, that’s what I’m thinking right now.

    So, SS, feel better now?

(Commentary on today’s cw may follow,
    IF I feel like it.)
    (Ahhhhh…freedom…)

  3. Good morning!

Sub-G, as Dave Guard commented on the Kingston Trio's live album, "As you can tell from the speed of our return, that exit was fraudulent."

We have lotsa Mexican foods here in TexMex land, but COTIJA is a mystery to me. Recognized JETER's name, but didn't know he was retired. Actually, that makes sense, d-o only recognizes sports names long after they've retired. BEER RUN absolutely demands this link. Enjoyed the brewskies, Doug. Thanx for the expo, Hahtoolah (I hope you have a happy birthday and a happy Chanukah.)

  4. FIR, but earl->NASH, and carma->KARMA (bad spelars of the world, UNTIE!)

Hand up for not knowing COTIKA queso. I see that the town is near Jalisco, home of Jalisco cheese, famous for the listeria outbreak of 1985.

The refrain of the title song in Jimmy Buffett's album Barometer Soup goes "We'll BARREL ROLL into the sun, just for starters."

Most folks confuse "keg" and "BARREL." Those big ol' kegs that the strong bartenders wrestle with in bars and restaurants are actually 1/2 BARREL kegs. A full BARREL would be too big and cumbersome to manage in a retail environment.

Thanks to Doug for another pleasurable Tuesday exercise. And thanks to Ha2La for another fun run through the grid. Hope your birthday is a great one!

  5. Oh, okay D-O (very funny)
And since that’s true I guess I should just go ahead and comment.
    To wit:
    I wasn’t familiar with
the Mexican cheese. The rest of the puzzle wasn’t terribly hard, though. FIR, so I’m happy.

  6. Fun and quick puzzle - although for the first day of Hanukah it should have a focus on wine instead of beer! WEES about COTIJA
Thanks Susan for the link to the Six13 acapella group - they are such fun and a good take off on "Wicked", the part two movie just came out a few weeks ago

  7. I enjoyed today's puzzle! The theme was entertaining and well executed, with four entries that were all fresh and fun. The fill was also clean: a limited number of proper names and no dreck.
Of all things, I got stuck on the CHILI in frito pie. Here in New Mexico, we usually spell it with an "E" on the end instead of the more common "I". Of course, I have seen it with the "I" many times before but my brain just didn't go there this morning. Eventually the perps got me on the right track.

Thank-you for Doug for the pleasant romp, and to Hahtoolah for the lively review. The cat scan cartoon was my favorite.

-Competive cooking shows seem unnecessarily cruel to us
-We Baby Boomers made SLO-pitch softball really big in our town. As we aged, it all went away
-A recent news show asked young people to name the two countries that touch the USA. Hilarity ensued.
-Subgenius – There are days I don’t post either when I feel like I have nothing to say but I do solve everyday.
-Susan, Happy Birthday, where we get the present of your lovely write-up

  9. Hola!
    Happy birthday, Susan!
Thank you to Doug Peterson for an enjoyable and very doable puzzle today. i get confused between BORAX and BORON but SIX PACK ABS cleared that up today. COTIJA also contributed though it's not a cheese I often use and never SNACK ON.
Steve NASH was a Phoenix Sun for a few years back in the days when I was an avid fan. OSKAR Schindler will be forever etched in my memory from watching the movie, "Schindler's List". What a hero!
It's news to me, too, that ELMO had a sister but now I know her name is Daisy. Enjoy your day, everyone!

  10. Kat, me too on the spelling of CHILE but I grudgingly conform in puzzles.

  11. Fairly obvious “Containers of Beer “ theme. (Too many six packs and you won’t have SIX PACK ABS)
    Inkovers: Etsy/EBAY, mini/MAXI, able/DEFT, holdup/HOLE

Wonder what language the Brits would be speaking if the Romans didn’t up and leave and the SAXONs hadn’t moved into the neighborhood.

    “ ____ dairy” ? (Oh “diary”)

  12. I kind of GOOFED in the east. I don’t know why I couldn’t come up with this expression, I missed the CHILI, and the iPods, and of course I didn’t know COTIJA. What a silly mess.

I did enjoy the BEER theme and detected it pretty quickly. I had a few unknowns like CHEF as clued, KUNIS, and KARMA as clued, but perps took care of them in no time.

This CW was not a BORE.

Happy birthday Hahtoolah ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰. I always enjoy your reviews and today was especially fun. However seeing those BARREL ROLLS I got nauseated watching the video you provided. LOL.

  13. Took 5:39 today to get to the brewery.

SubG has returned! That's fantastic news. I did miss your post yesterday, so thank you for reposting (and reconsidering).

I knew the Actress of the Day (Kunis), but not the Mexican cheese (cotija), the Britian invader, and wasn't sure if the Bible book was John or Jobs, but turns out it was Joel.

  14. 14 names, DNK 5, but they perped quickly enough to help me FIR in 10. 37A LOO/LOU/LEW/LIU finally perped in. Fun CW, thanx DP. Terrific write-up, thanx Hahtoolah and HBD.

  15. FIR. Pretty much another piece of cake today, with the exception of the Mexican cheese. 20 Mule Team Borax brought memories of the old "Death Valley Days" TV show from the '50s, something I haven't thought about in decades but came back to me instantly! Of course, I appreciated the UNORIGINAL REPLY clue. Another great recap from Ha2la.
    Happy Birthday! Keep 'em coming!

  16. I thought this was a near-perfect puzzle from start to finish. There were a few that I failed to connect with at first, but it took only a letter or two for the light bulb to come on.
COJITA was a gimme for this Mexican food-loving lifelong Californian.
I’ve come to accept UTES, as clued, as a crossword staple, although having been part of the 4WD community and owning many trucks through the years, I have yet to hear that term with my own ears. We just call them trucks.

  18. Good Afternoon:

Late posting due to the usual reason: getting sidetracked. Anyway, I enjoyed the theme, the reveal, the fill, and the solve! No unknowns, except for Cotija, and no w/os. DP is a seasoned pro and his puzzles never fail to entertain and delight the solver, IMO.

Thanks, Doug, and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the commentary and the chuckles. Thanks, also, for pointing out the size progression of the containers and, also, the Easter Egg of Ale. Both features sailed right over my head. Lastly, best wishes for a special Happy Birthday celebration and Happy Chanukah.

DO, your self-deprecating comments about your non-existent (or hilariously erroneous) sports knowledge tickle my funny bone no end! ๐Ÿคฃ

    Have a great day.

    1. I too wondered about that airliner doing a barrel roll, so Googled it, and discovered it is 100% CGI:

    2. For those who deemed unclefred's video too long to sit through, the BARREL ROLL video was just a Hollywood guy fiddling around with CGI. The person who ripped it off was the one that claimed it was real. History Channel analyzed whether it COULD HAVE happened, and their experts concluded that 1) it would have to be in a strong cyclone, and B) at that altitude it would be unrecoverable.

I have been so busy lately, I missed three cakes! Windhover, (who taught me about Kestrels.) Jzb, (who taught me to blow my own horn.) and now Hahtoolah, who taught me I will never be able to keep up with her linking/pic capabilities...

And now you throw in beer run?
how the heck am I going to make 3 cakes and celebrate the theme?

And Jinx!? You beat me to my fav beer song!
I guess I will have to fall back on an old standard...

    1. I think I've mentioned that the composer / artist of the song in your link, Tom T. Hall, was from nearby Pleasant Valley, KY. He used to stop in my family's restaurant for (always) a hamburger occasionally on his way to his job as a DJ at our local 1,000 watt, dawn-to-dusk radio station.

    Re: barrel roll

Most people mistake this with spinning your plane by just moving the stick left, (or right.) this is not a barrel roll, this is an aileron roll...

A barrel roll involves moving your plane in 3 dimensions while rolling, which would look like a coiled spring if viewed from outside. This is what is needed if you want to spin your plane while holding a glass of beer in your hand without spilling. The centrifical (centripetal maybe) force holds the liquid in the container like water in a bucket spun on a string.

    here is a reference guide

here is a 20 second short explanation for the non aviation minded

Knowing how to do this is especially important when you are on those long missions, and the beer cans pile up. You need to know how to take evasive action at a moments notice, without spilling your beer, or getting hit in the head with empty bottles. It is even more important when you are on even longer reconnaissance missions, and you have to use a piss bucket...

P.s. none of this works if you are flying on your computer flight simulator,
(Don't ask me how I know...)

  22. Delightful Tuesday puzzle, many thanks, Doug. And thank you too for your always helpful commentary and pictures, Hahtoolah. And Happy Birthday! Hope you have a wonderful day with family and friends!

Well, having a puzzle start with LUCID suggests I'll get all the words and be able to clearly solve the puzzle. Will that happen? Well, I've heard of E BAY but don't think I've ever used it, or even SCANNED it, so it's not part of my USAGE. It gives my lymph NODES more than a CAN OF WORMS. Well, at least I exercise 4 times a week in the morning, but I have no idea if that helps my 6 PACK ABS, although I hope it does. So what else do we have here? No, I don't do a BEER RUN today--or any day, and I'm not a CASE WORKER. Hey, I'm 80 and retired so I don't have to do those stacks of chores any more. My exercise keeps my ARTERY in great shape, so I don't have to get on a plane to do a BARREL ROLL. But I would give ELMO a DEAR hug before I'd SPEED off.

Have a delightful and cheerful sunny day, everybody.

  26. Hi All!

What a smooth puzzle with a foamy theme, Doug. Thanks.

Thanks too to Hahtoolah for another sparkly review - GOOF-off fatigue is LOL. And Happy Birthday!

WOs: I started Whale in CAMEL's squares #BrainFart
    ESPs: KUNIS, NASH as clued
Fav: OBELISK is a fun word (even if I need perps to spell it :-))

Where's Picard for his CSO @1d. Charle ECHO picked his up at 29a.

D-O: H-E-B carries COTIJA. Try it sprinkled on an enchilada or a taco - it's yummy (and you've probably had it at Mexican restaurants around town - I see the white crumbled cheese sprinkled on up-scale tacos all the time).

Refreshed before posting says - sumdaze: similar to feta but smaller bits (at least what I've seen) and saltier. Like parmesan & feta mixed(?)

~20 years ago, I helped a power plant that used the steam at the BORAX factory out in the Mojave Desert upgrade the security on their computer systems. I missed the Suttle landing at Edwards by one day (but I did get to talk to NASA guys at the bar the night before!)

CED - LOL on the need for a BARREL ROLL.

    Happy Chanukah y'all!

    Cheers, -T
