We are just at the tail end of spring migration for birds. How nice for constructor Robbie Cottom to remind us of it. His birds, however, are rather down-to-earth.

ReplyDeleteI know DUCK boat TOUR, but not DUCK TOUR. Also, never heard of a CROW HOP. Don't know what a TAYTAY is, but I know what a TATA is.
Didn't know Larsson, but I love the nonfiction works of Erik Larson. Favorites are The Splendid and the Vile, The Devil in the White City, and Isaac's Storm. I thought I hated history when I took it in high school. Then in college I discovered that I only hated the way it was taught. I was reminded of that when I was an engineer at a PBS affiliate that carried James Burke's Connections, then again when I discovered Larson's books.
TAKEI does not rhyme with (crossword favorite) toupee, in case you were wondering. When Howard Stern joined Sirius Radio, George was a frequent addition to the full-time staff. Very interesting man, with a strong dislike of Bill Shatner.

p.s. Discovered that the LAT didn't hide their puzzle behind a paywall. It just seemed that way. because out here in the boonies, I have one-bar LTE data. which made the LAT web site appear to be stuck on the "subscribe" page. Going back to my sticks-and-bricks home today, with its 500 Mb fiber connectivity.
A crow hop is often done by competitive divers. As they stand on the end of the board (before doing a back dive or inward dive), they bounce the board a few times to get more lift off the board. Occassionally their feet lose contact with the board on the bounce before taking off to do the dive. This is a called a crow hop and should get score deductions from the diving judges. Also TAYTAY is Taylor Swift's nickname.

I knew the Actress of the Day (Hawke). Nice to see "ushered" rather than just the unpleasant "ushed".

ReplyDeleteI thought I knew the theme, But duck tour, which I get now since coming here, gave me pause. Also crow hop was totally unknown to me, and I'm quite a baseball fan. The rest made perfect sense, if not also very clever
But overall an enjoyable puzzle.

ReplyDeleteThis was a cute theme and an enjoyable solve. I wasn’t familiar with Crow Hop, but all of the other themers are well known, to me, anyway. I was happy to see Ushered in its full spelling vs the irritating Ush or Ushed. Other than IDK, Ish, and Ya Dig, the fill was clean and Monday appropriate.

A CROWHOP is also when a fielder has to double-clutch to get his feet and arm into position to make a strong throw - and often takes too long to get the runner out anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins have used the DUCK TOUR Boats in their victory parades on both Boston streets and the Charles River.
Took a while to get going because of all the obscure names, but ended up finishing it right. Took the Duck Tour in Boston, and it was awesome, driving down a boat ramp near the Science Museum and cruising up the Charles River.

I needed perps for ISU, CENA, TAY, HAWKE. On that note we had AUK, I assume, same pronunciation. I read all of STIEG Larsson’s novels.

It was nice to see USHER used as a verb, after so much recent fill featuring the ridiculous “USH.”
FIR in 10, but with a few W/Os: LESSER/LESSSO, HAM/MAC, AWK/AUK, and CARTOON/CARROTS. 17 names, DNK 5, but perps were fair. Except for TAKEI crossing STEIG, that being a CW no-no, but I knew TAKEI, so it filled right in.

I’ve seen all “The Girl” movies ….” The best versions were the originals in Swedish with subtitles. Didn’t realize they were novels first . No idea who the author (STIEG) was.

I remember watching the original “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” . It had English subtitles.
I was rivited and also had a bit of cultural shock as I always imagined Sweden to be such a calm and peaceful country.
Stieg Larrson was a ground breaking noir author.

Hola! Yes, this seemed more like a midweek challenge, but I liked it. No PANIC involved. It filled smoothly and reminded me that we had a TURKEY TROT every year and in those days I could actually "trot" with the students.
