I never heard of a
ReplyDelete“ duck tour”. The other themers were well known. Nevertheless, I did not find this puzzle as easy as what one would expect for a Monday.
Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.
Yes, DUCKTOUR seemed strange.
DeleteA DUCK TOUR is a great way to tour the Wisconsin Dells
DeleteGood morning, y'all! FIR, although I found it to be a meh-ISH experience.
ReplyDeleteFIR, but cartoon->CARROTS.
ReplyDeleteI know DUCK boat TOUR, but not DUCK TOUR. Also, never heard of a CROW HOP. Don't know what a TAYTAY is, but I know what a TATA is.
Didn't know Larsson, but I love the nonfiction works of Erik Larson. Favorites are The Splendid and the Vile, The Devil in the White City, and Isaac's Storm. I thought I hated history when I took it in high school. Then in college I discovered that I only hated the way it was taught. I was reminded of that when I was an engineer at a PBS affiliate that carried James Burke's Connections, then again when I discovered Larson's books.
TAKEI does not rhyme with (crossword favorite) toupee, in case you were wondering. When Howard Stern joined Sirius Radio, George was a frequent addition to the full-time staff. Very interesting man, with a strong dislike of Bill Shatner.
Thanks to Robbie for the challenging Monday puzzle, and to NaomiZ for another fine TOUR. I'm glad you didn't DUCK your responsibility.
p.s. Discovered that the LAT didn't hide their puzzle behind a paywall. It just seemed that way. because out here in the boonies, I have one-bar LTE data. which made the LAT web site appear to be stuck on the "subscribe" page. Going back to my sticks-and-bricks home today, with its 500 Mb fiber connectivity.
A crow hop is often done by competitive divers. As they stand on the end of the board (before doing a back dive or inward dive), they bounce the board a few times to get more lift off the board. Occassionally their feet lose contact with the board on the bounce before taking off to do the dive. This is a called a crow hop and should get score deductions from the diving judges. Also TAYTAY is Taylor Swift's nickname.
DeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteI guess I forgot to hit "Publish" and lost my post. No matter, it wasn't that great. I've never heard anyone say "WHO EVEN ARE YOU?" Have you? Thanx, Robbie and NaomiZ.
I have heard someone say, "How odd you are."
DeleteTook 5:15 today to flightlessly finish this puzzle.
ReplyDeleteSeemed trickier than most Monday puzzles.
I knew the Actress of the Day (Hawke). Nice to see "ushered" rather than just the unpleasant "ushed".
I've tasted puffin. It was good, surprisingly.
FIR. A few proper names I didn't know, but the perps were kind.
ReplyDeleteI thought I knew the theme, But duck tour, which I get now since coming here, gave me pause. Also crow hop was totally unknown to me, and I'm quite a baseball fan. The rest made perfect sense, if not also very clever
But overall an enjoyable puzzle.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteThis was a cute theme and an enjoyable solve. I wasn’t familiar with Crow Hop, but all of the other themers are well known, to me, anyway. I was happy to see Ushered in its full spelling vs the irritating Ush or Ushed. Other than IDK, Ish, and Ya Dig, the fill was clean and Monday appropriate.
Thanks, Robbie, and thanks, Naomi, or another outstanding review and interesting commentary.
Have a great day.
A CROWHOP is also when a fielder has to double-clutch to get his feet and arm into position to make a strong throw - and often takes too long to get the runner out anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins have used the DUCK TOUR Boats in their victory parades on both Boston streets and the Charles River.
Took a while to get going because of all the obscure names, but ended up finishing it right. Took the Duck Tour in Boston, and it was awesome, driving down a boat ramp near the Science Museum and cruising up the Charles River.
ReplyDeleteCute theme indeed. I didn’t know CROW HOP, but it fit. I took a DUCK boat TOUR in Ketchikan, Alaska several years ago.
ReplyDeleteI did are for the many conversational phrases. I don’t mind รก few, but this was too many for my taste.
I needed perps for ISU, CENA, TAY, HAWKE. On that note we had AUK, I assume, same pronunciation. I read all of STIEG Larsson’s novels.
Thank you NaomiZ for a lovely review. Beautiful bird.
That should be didn’t care for
DeleteI enjoyed the puzzle, but am surprised at its placement on a Monday. It seemed Wednesday-level to me.
ReplyDeleteBaseball outfielders’ footwork as they set up for a long throw is referred to as a crow hop.
It was nice to see USHER used as a verb, after so much recent fill featuring the ridiculous “USH.”
FIR in 10, but with a few W/Os: LESSER/LESSSO, HAM/MAC, AWK/AUK, and CARTOON/CARROTS. 17 names, DNK 5, but perps were fair. Except for TAKEI crossing STEIG, that being a CW no-no, but I knew TAKEI, so it filled right in.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this Monday level CW, thanx RB.
Another terrific write-up by NaomiZ, thanx for all the time and effort.
Easy made easier with a gettable/obvious theme. We took the amphibious DUCK (boat) TOUR in Nova Scotia years ago, terrific . Many may remember this disastrous event … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_Rock_Lake_duck_boat_accident
ReplyDeleteInkovers: lob/ACE, Tae/TAY.
“Poke fish” ? Is it accompanied by Annie’s Poke salad? “Granny Flat”: at first I thought the answer might be attic ๐ฒ!
CROW HOP?
So “Maya” HAWKE is a Nepo baby, the daughter of an actress made famous by her frequent appearances on CW’s. “Uma” and her occasional CW visitor father “Ethan”
Being more sophisticated I wanted the too long wine “and cheese” ๐ง
I’ve seen all “The Girl” movies ….” The best versions were the originals in Swedish with subtitles. Didn’t realize they were novels first . No idea who the author (STIEG) was.
Two human turkeys doing the TURKEY TROT
“Keep commerce human”’ sounds like an ad for the slave trade ๐ง
As we USHER in a new week, enjoy ๐
A challenging Monday offering from Robbie.
ReplyDeleteI liked this puzzle.
I remember watching the original “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” . It had English subtitles.
I was rivited and also had a bit of cultural shock as I always imagined Sweden to be such a calm and peaceful country.
Stieg Larrson was a ground breaking noir author.
Thanks for the detailed recap Naomi.
Hola! Yes, this seemed more like a midweek challenge, but I liked it. No PANIC involved. It filled smoothly and reminded me that we had a TURKEY TROT every year and in those days I could actually "trot" with the students.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to Newfoundland I took a boat tour around the bay and saw the AUK habitat; and even at a long distance away the smell from a million AUKS was overpowering! .
Thank you, Robbie and NaomiZ!
Yes, NaomiZ, I needed perps, didn’t panic, and although I enjoyed this puzzle and FIR, it was not the usual Monday piece of cake! Loved all the Stieg Larsson books! Thanks Robbie and NaomiZ!
ReplyDeleteInteresting Monday puzzle, many thanks, Robbie. And your comments and pictures are always helpful, so thanks for those too, Naomi.
ReplyDeleteWell, a puzzle that begins with "Channel that brings tears to one's eyes" followed by PANIC is a bit scary, until we see that DOC is there to help us out. And I suppose if OSHA is a worker protection agency they'll also look after us, and maybe all those flying and moving critters too. So let's hope that the CHICKEN RUN, and the DUCK TOUR and the TURKEY TROT and the CROW HOP will keep them all safe, though maybe not that DINOSAUR busy laying an egg. At least that HAWKE turned out to be sweet and pleasant Maya, and not part of a more worrisome group. Well, enough about all these FAUNA--time for me to get some CARROTS to go with my sandwich for lunch.
Have a pleasant and healthy and enjoyable rest of the week, everybody.
