Thank you, Marti, for the swell write-up.<br /><br />Started this puzzle on a high note. It seemed almost too easy for a Thursday. As it turned out, it was quite difficult.<br /><br />Enjoyed 10D CZAR. Usually the constructor uses TSAR. I feel the CZAR is the best spelling for the former ruler of Russia. Of course, I inked in TSAR first, because that is what Is normally done. I changed it, happily.<br /><br />I missed 37A. Had SURPLUS E ELEMENT. I felt it did not look right. Got all the others, but could not see the connection. Did not get NESSIE, had NESSUE. Oh well, you can't get them all.<br /><br />MENE was a total unknown. But, I will check that out. I have no idea how I would have known that, but crosswords have taught me a lot.
