  1. Good morning, Argyle, C.C. and gang - I found today's puzzle substantially easier than yesterday's, but fun to solve right from the start. M*A*S*H is still a favorite of mine - if I'm channel-surfing and it's on, I'm hooked.

I didn't know for sure what the theme was gonna be (other than something Spanish) until I got to the portmanteau unifier; nicely done. The clues were pretty simple ones, but fresh, and that's gotta be hard to do after a while. I have a feeling Lois will have a comment or two about a couple of them.

Argyle, great job on the blog. To answer your question, no, I don't drink coffee, fortunately - I'm wired enough without it. I have either apple or orange juice in the morning.

Today is World Teacher's Day and Do Something Nice Day. So do something nice to a teacher.

And since it seemed to so upset one of our anons last week, here's more posers for you, with answers later:

    1. Who earned infamy by noting, "A billion dollars isn't worth what it used to be"?

    2. What was a gladiator armed with, in addition to a dagger and a spear?

    3. What California city did the last Pony Express ride end in?

    4. What congressional award was Dr. Mary Edwards Walker the first woman to receive?

  2. Hi fellow solvers!

I have not been neglecting the blog. Rather, I have been in the hospital (3 compound fractures leg and ankle).

My son-in-law picked me up a Virgin Mobile wireless modem the other evening. One can get lots done (VERY slowly) until it dies after about 30 minutes.

After an operation, Medicare only keeps you in hospital 2.5 days. Where you get virtually no care. Thus I have been transferred to a nursing home to get "wonderful" care. Huh! For 3 hours after I arrived I was drowning in my own urine. There was no phone, no one available to give me password for in house network, no food and drink, etc. etc.(really good care). I slept for 2.5 hours, and was awakened by screeching P.A. system. BFF brought me phone-charger for cell.

In response to several comments made by (mostly) thoughtful responders re insomnia. (1) Doubt if a recovering alkie (about 15 years) should take up weed (2) Take 2 trazedones nightly. Have for several years. (3) Took ambien a long time. My legs turned to jelly and a had three major falls. Finally figured out problem. Lunesta does nothing! Fall last Friday due to several days insomnia, I think. (Dear Vidwan: no sleep and you still want perfection? Frankly, I thought that bit was kinda cute!)

Good job Argyle, Jeff. Yes, puzzle easier than yesterday!

  5. Good Morning, Argyle. Great write-up. I found this to be an easier puzzle than yesterday. It was completed in the first pass.

My only error was to think that Jello Jiggles instead of WIGGLES. I scratched my head at JAGE as a "Living" Payment. Then the lightbulb went on!

Favorite clue was Broadway Flyer = PETER PAN. Great misleading clue!

Not keen on having ONE-UP and ONE LINER in the same puzzle.

  6. Oh, and to answer your question, C.C. asked me a couple years ago, when I was occasionally the first poster, if I would make that a regular thing. I'm up anyway, and it does give some continuity to the blog.
If people would prefer I didn't, I have no problem stopping, and posting later.

  7. TWIMC:
I often log onto the blog and find '0' comments (it doesn't last long), but when I log on and someone besides Dennis is the first poster, it feels like something is out of place. Don't mistake this for a call for deference from others, a suggestion that people should wait to post until Dennis' post appears. It's just a pattern that has been there since I first posted a year and a half ago. I think I understand Fermatprime's question to be at least in part facetious, but my coffee tastes different if Dennis isn't up there.

Fermatprime, I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune. I hope there is someone who will intervene on your behalf to get you the attention you need. On the other subject you mentioned, here is my take and some more unsolicited advice.
Although I do not partake of either the evil weed (tobacco) or the more benign Mary Jane, I have grown both for the same reason the PTA has bake sales, i.e., as a fund-raising project. And unlike that legal drug most of us partake of (alcohol) and the aforementioned evil weed, mj is not addictive and has many qualities that could aid in your rehabilitation. Have someone you trust get you a sample.
One last: it seems to me that the "world's best health care system" has failed you miserably. You (and all of us) deserve better.

  8. Dennis: I look forward to your first post.

  9. Good morning all. Nice write-up, Argyle.

Fermatprime - Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope you mend soon.

A real speed run today. One pass and it was done. Had to slow down and read the perps to make sure I wasn't "missing" anything. NAN was a WAG. I agree with Hahtool about jiggles vs WIGGLES. Did not SUSS the theme, but got the theme fill easily. A nice bright breezy puzzle.

To answer Argyles's question - Yes, usually Starbuck's French Roast.

    Have a good day.

  10. Good morning Argyle and all, a very easy puzzle today, but I managed to make it harder in the center section. Working my way thru the center I put “get at it” for 24D and then when I filled in 38A I did not notice that I had an “a” at the end of jalapeno and then I put peppers for poppers. I finally unraveled those problems and then tried to put jiggles for wiggles and like hahtool I wondered what jage had to do with living. Other than that it was a fast solve and I thought easier than Monday’s puzzle.

Wet, rainy and cold here today. UGH

Fermatprime I hope your leg heals quickly and that you can get some rest.

Hope you all have a great Tuesday.

  11. Argyle, Wonderful write-up.
Knew that was the Rita photo YOU'D pick even before I enjoyed.

    FUN Tuesday offering Jeff.

Had the theme after SALSA CLUB. Looked at the reveal clue and thought, I don't know Adam Sandler movies ... then remembered I saw SPANGLISH. Well, it does have Téa Leoni, an I am a fan of her.

Argyle, once again I looked at the IONE Skye photo ... realized I'll forget her, and her name (again) by noon.

Had jiggles before WIGGLES ... jage for living WAGE made no sense at all.

    Now for triva:
    1) J. Paul Getty
    2) Trident
    3) Sacramento
    4) Medal of Honor (advantage, I'm a Civil War buff).

  12. Argyle, Jeff and corner:

Good morning; this was a fun ride and I particularly liked the symmetrical FIESTA SIESTA as well as the grid spanning JALEPENO POPPERS.

IONA SKYE has worked for a long time, but I remember her most as the daughter of Donovan Leitch.

Dennis, I agree, you are the first poster; it is part of our ambience. I will just answer one of your queries, it was the J. Paul Getty . I preferred the quote from silver tongued Senator Everett Dirksen who noticed billions could add up to real money.

  13. Oops, hit send too soon, heal quickly and well F., welcome home JL and very fun puzzle Jeff. Also, I have coffee every day, but sometimes have tea first

  14. Morning All,

I jiggled also, which was the only time I put the eraser to work. Even though it was easy, the grid was clean and fun to work through. I just love Jalapeno Poppers, especially with beer.

Fermatprime, That sounds like a nasty fall. Get well soon and I hope the care givers straighten out.

From the Dads will get back at you for all the shit you pulled as a kid file.........Dad keeps a garden out of town on a piece of property where there is quite a population of feral cats. He found an abandoned kitten in his garden shed which he attempted to drop off at the SPCA, but it was closed. He then brought it into Town and handed it to my wife (sheesh)! She took it to the vet to be checked out. Its fine and is somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks old and now lives with us.

I'm drinking more coffee than usual this morning.

    Have a great day!

Ouch! Getting out of hospital asap is probably the best thing to do these days - very unhealthy places, full of nasty diseases. And get walking asap. This is becoming a cliché, but the US does do the best job of 'high end' 'state-of-the-art' medicine (albeit at a high price); but a much poorer job on aftercare. In a more socialized system such as in the UK (assuming you survived the hospital stay) you would have been offered 'in-home' care with a community nurse to take care of you, bring/cook meals, bring your meds, get you moving, etc., on a daily basis; even house-calls from your GP (remember those!) to check up on you. We just need to figure out how to combine the best elements of these 2 systems.

After my father died, my mother couldn't sleep at night. Her Brit-doctor said not to worry about it. Don't take sleeping pills - you really don't need that much sleep. Just lie in bed at night, relax, read and watch TV. Take naps in the day when you feel like it. Just make sure you eat well and drink moderately. Go to the pub and have lunch with your friends a couple of times a week. Walk to the park, play a little bowls (lawn green variety). That was it. Seemed to work. She is 76.

  17. Easy run on the CW today until I got to the SW corner where I stopped on PETER???, KA??? and had no idea about esTOP or chINA for some reason. I g'd Karen Carpenter and all fell into line then. I had JIGGLED for a while too.

    Fermatprime,
How terrible! If only people understood that while it's great that we have wonderful medical research and great surgeons, it is only available to those who can (or whose employers can) afford great insurance to go with it. I certainly hope you are getting better service now than when you first arrived there. May you heal quickly!

After my altercation over this with Husker the other day I gave up. But when I broke my ankle 5 years ago while in Paris with a student group, I had a 7 day hospital stay that was wonderful with physiotherapy every day, as well as daily visits by the surgeon and the anesthetist.

French institutional food is the best anywhere, --I actually got to choose from a menu for each meal. My workers-comp paid for it all and then figured out what my son's frequent flier miles were worth for my business class flight home that the surgeon insisted on. I'm guessing there was so much money saved from what it would have cost here, that they felt they had to do more, hence the flight coverage.

I also know someone who has gone twice to Belgium to have hip replacements done--one trip for each hip. She saved over $10,000 each time.

  18. Good Morning All, Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled solvers... (homage to Ms. Lazrus). Coffee is a staple of my mornings and the dull headache I get when I don't have any is testimony to an addiction!! I had a Dr. Pepper at 10 pm once when travelling with 80 kids and I spent the night "counting flowers on the wall!"

Initial wrong offerings later corrected - PEPPERS and HABEUS. Enjoyed Broadway flier and Tree feller also! Is Goulash a stew?

  20. Yikes.

Whenever I see the phrase 'habeas corpus' I am reminded that it is about time I became a citizen. I have been a law-abiding Resident Alien for many years, of course, have an American wife and 2 American children; pay my taxes, etc; but the loss of guarantees of the right of habeas corpus for non-citizens over the past several years still makes me feel uneasy.

As a citizen I can look forward to: (1) Voting, and the right to run for elected office (except President); and (2) Jury service. Mmm, swings and roundabouts.

Mmm. I just checked, and see that I must be of good moral character - adultery, drunk-driving, and the possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana (not necessarily all at the same time......), are possible grounds for denial. Fortunately, speeding tickets are not. I'd better start swatting up on the US constitution before I do something naughty.

Argyle, thanks for the write-up; links and all-so fun!

Fermatprime- I'm just sick over your news. I hope you can get some of those issues ironed out pretty quickly and be on the mend. Only yesterday, I wondered why I hadn't seen you.

  25. No coffee for me, a nice cup or three of Earl Gray. Only 20% of the caffeine of coffee, so I can have more.

@fermatprime, my sympathies for your ankle and residency difficulties. There is a food/mineral supplement called potassium magnesium aspartate that has helped others suffering insomnia. Magnesium is mostly overlooked because there isn't a definitive test to determine deficiency, but it is very important in the diet (as is potassium). Magnesium arguably is more important for bone strength than calcium, has a positive effect on asthma sufferers, assists in insulin pathways and weight loss for diabetics, and it can reduce or help prevent artery calcification. You can get it from green leafy plants (chlorophyll, the plant version of hemoglobin, is green because of it), and to a lesser extent from nuts. With depleted soils, though, it is difficult to get enough just by eating.

M*A*S*H gets my vote as being both beginning & benchmark for TV worth watching. I'm glad they chose to end it with a real finale, rather than let it dissolve into nothing.

Starbucks Decaf Sumatra daily. Goes well with a puzzle. I'm apparently sensitive to caffeine, and can tolerate only a little.

Fermat - Speedy recovery! I'm sorry to learn of your follow-up care woes. America deserves better.

Dennis - After a year of lurking & blogging, I've come to look forward to your "headline".

Kazie - I should've known the Aussie Burger was an interpretation of an existing favorite. Really good, though! My wife and I braved a lot of Mooloolaba Beach traffic to get more of those burgers.

  27. Good Morning All, A nice Tuesday puzzle. It seemed pretty easy. Can't start without a cup of coffee. The only clue that gave me trouble was (39D) Broadway flier. I was thinking of a advertisement or a Playbill. Ah well, friendly perps helped me out and I finished up with no big problem.

Lots of names... RITA, ALEC, MEIR, PUZO, SONIA, IOBE, KAREN, EMMA and even cartoon STU and literary characters PETER PAN and ESME.

  28. Hi Argyle, C.C. & gang, my wife and I 'almost' finished today's puzzle. We forgot to check the crossword on 41D and we had filled in peppers instead of poppers for 38A. That's the first thing I noticed when I came here.

The Suicide is painless 'theme song from MASH' was one of my favorites but they only used the melody for the TV series not the words. I think that I remember the original movie used the entire text.

  29. Al mentioned the importance of magnesium in diet. Of the daily recommended value, one serving of blackstrap molasses has 25% of magnesium, 20% of calcium, and 25% of the iron. I was stuck in the SE corner for a while...didn't remember ESME, SHAW, EMMA but I got them after I got SPANGLISH (a movie I watched 1/2 of).
    I always forget INDIAN BREAD.

Argyle: I have 1 cup of coffee with my toast in the morning.
I like lemonade (also like HARD lemonade).

Al...why does tea make me very jumpy and coffee doesn't. I had always heard that tea had more caffeine than coffee.

Fermatprime: Boy, what a nightmare you have been through! How the heck did you break your leg that badly?
I wouldn't worry about taking 'weed' for sleeping, it's not addictive and might be just the thing. You don't have to smoke it (as has been discussed here before)

    Happy Tuesday!

A little background about this puzzle: it was conceived in Bolivia! I was there in May looking at some microfinance programs, traveling with a non-profit called Global Partnerships. My fellow travelers and I worked together on assembling this crossword - super fun!

If you have a free moment, check out Global Partnerships. I originally hoped we could get this as a Sunday puzzle with the title "Global Partnerships", maybe even with a link to the website, but that didn't work out.

Commentary well done, Argyle! Love the new avatar! I needed a good, straight forward puzzle! Today Jeff Chen hit the mark for me. I was getting (flustrated) with some of the toughies over the last few weeks.

    20. Popular swim briefs : SPEEDOs.
Finally, I have proof that white makes things appear larger and black or dark makes things smaller. No bones about it.
Thanks for that hunky image...I may be 56 years of age, but I'm not dead!

    36. Ending for absorb : ENT. I bet the Speedos are absorbent.

    48. Paid athlete : PRO. IMBO, they look like pros! What do you think they get paid?

    53. Giraffe's trademark : NECK. One may be tempted to do this with 20a.!

    55. Cookbook verb : STIR. I must say, 20a.gave me quite a stir but I think I'd better stick to lemonade. Hand over the ladle! A nice, tall glass should cool me down...

    61. Bar, in law : ESTOP. New 1 4 me.

    7. "The Simpsons" disco guy : STU. Nice, simple graphic and the colors are just right!

    18. Summer drink : ADE. Who really drinks it? Ades are a serious beverage in New England (my reference point, I grew up there.) My mother would make lemon aid all summer long. It was so good when we were dry from the sweltering 70+ degree summer days. I cringe when thinking how much sugar went into it. But it was so quenching and it just hit the spot. LEMONADE. And I have to mention this lucrative enterprise under which we toiled for a few nickles, mind you! LEMONADE STANDS

Nice puzzle today. Couldn't get the theme without the unifier. Had no idea Sandler was in SPANGLISH - which I'd never seen - but did recognize the title.

On medical care I'll say we are technically and technologically great - especially with radical intervention. Our weaknesses are in access, affordability, and prevention.

Things to go. Gotta GET ON IT.

  41. Good afternoon everyone. I slept until 8:30! and so am slow to get going. DH made a great b'fast of eggs, sausage, toast, tomato juice.

And yes, Argyle, I do drink a mug of coffee every morning as I start the paper. And I drink a cup at 5 or so, and another after dinner at about 9. And I sleep like a babe every night. Don't know why. I'm just blessed with a good sleep gene I guess.

On to Fermatprime. Your troubles are awful. I do hope you can update us that your care has improved. I'm sending good thoughts for your sleep, your fractures, and your care.

Enjoyed this puzzle. I could do it! Liked the theme. (I stuff seeded jalapeños with peanut butter for hors d'oeuvres. It's not very hot; the seeds are where the heat comes from.

    Cheers

  42. Fermatprime, that sucks. I wish you could get the hell out of there.
Sales and distribution of illegal drugs is a crime! Using it is a crime. If medical Marijuana is prescribed to a patient in a medical facility, it is legal, otherwise there are consequences.
    Nicely put, Jazzbumpa!

  45. Hola, Argyle, C.C. and amigos de crucigramas!

Yes, Dennis, your first post feels just right. If it isn't there, it seems that something is amiss.

Thanks, Jeff Chen, for this lovely and lively puzzle. Of course, the FIESTABOWL was a given; I would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to not know about it. We also have the Fiesta Bowl parade, Th FB 10K, and a week long series of other activities leading up to it.

SPANGLISH was a so-so movie, I thought, but a SALSACLUB, now there's action.

MASH is also one of my favs and will watch it anytime I find it.

  47. @carol, dry tea does contain more caffeine than dry coffee by weight, but tea is prepared at much weaker concentrations. Although, certain types, like maté tea has just as much as coffee does. I couldn't say exactly why tea makes you jumpier, you may be more sensitive to other compounds in it, or let it brew too long, or added something, like sugar or worse, nutrasweet (aspartame)? Hard to say, but listen to what your body tells you and if you are getting a reaction, then don't use it. Or try green or white teas, which have even less.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Windhover I could not agree with you more on the medical Marijuana, and should it be "a crime" just because "that's the law."

Sometimes "the Law" is wrong and should be changed.

Just look at what has happened in the Netherland after 20 years and it's controlled use. There is less crime, less use by those underage. And their school kids, well their test grades went UP.

Hmmm, maybe that is why I go to Jamaica twice a year. Then again I wasn't "experimenting back in the 70's" with Mary Jane ... I was into "full-time research."
    And I did inhale.

  51. Hi all,
It got too late to post last evening so first I want to talk about yesterdays puzzle. I found it a little hard for Monday but managed to finish.Todays was easier.

Husker, I liked your orange suit. Those trips to Florida sounds like a lot of fun.

Fermatprime- so sorry about your enjuries, and hope you heal well. When I had my knee replacement surgery in 2007 I stayed in the hospital 5 days, then went to a nursing home for 2 weeks and had wonderful care. Medicare paid the majority of everything and my medigap paid alot of the rest.

I hope to finish reading the blog later as we are leaving soon to shop a little and then to dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It is a beautiful day, 66 degrees and sunny just as it was that day. 53 years ago.

    Have a great day, all!

  53. Dennis - You'll always be lead-off man on my team. Didn't gladiators use nets?

Firmatprime - Hope you heal quickly and completely. My suggestion to you is DON'T fall down no more!!!! You can break stuff.

Windhover _ Careful about "the world's best health care". If you remember my Saturday 5 part story over a year ago (where my friend from GBRV found out that his severely lacerated arm was not covered by insurance as it was a "pre-existing condition" because it happened before he got to the hospital) evoked a ton of bitches to c.c. because it was not relevant to the crossword. c.c. agreed and my postings have become quite rare. Beware, my friend - learn form the mistakes of others.

In keeping with form, I found today's X-word fun and easy, but well conceived.

    I must be off!

  54. Late start today, so I'll be brief and my apologies for any redundancy. But, first, my SWAG would be Dr Walker received the Medal of Honor. And having been a fan of Oaters most of my life. I'm pretty sure the Pony Express ended in Sacramento.

Regarding the puzzle, was a bit easier today. Just a couple of issues. With two new lady Justices, I know one is Sonya and the other is Elena, but I never remember who is who. Speedos new to me. I can never remember Emma Lazarous so I let the perps handle it.

    Fun puzzle.

    1. Who earned infamy by noting, "A billion dollars isn't worth what it used to be"?

    - J. Paul Getty

    2. What was a gladiator armed with, in addition to a dagger and a spear?

    - A net

    3. What California city did the last Pony Express ride end in?

    - Sacramento

    4. What congressional award was Dr. Mary Edwards Walker the first woman to receive?

    - The Medal of Honor

We've got a smart group here; I'll have to find some tougher questions.

  60. I thought this was a very easy puzzle today even with all the names which are my downfall. I wouldn't have known Alec, Ione, Esme or Shaw without perp help. Since I solve both across and downs together I didn't fall into the "jiggle" "wiggle" trap. All in all enjoyable.

Argyle, thanks for the wonderful links. I liked one in particular very much. I love the smell of coffee brewing but could never manage to stomach the taste. It seems bitter to me. My morning go to is a Diet Pepsi.

Fermatprime, your problems with our health care system basically made me mad. I hope you are out of there fairly quickly.

    Sallie, peanut butter in jalapenos??

Marge, Happy 53rd Annniversary!! That's quite an accomplishment.

  61. Hello all. It's been awhile. Easy, fun puzzle. Nothing to add except I am a coffee drinker. Every morning I froth a little milk and add steamy hot coffee...Ahhh...then hit the puzzle!

Gilda, my absolute favorite Rita Hayworth film! The dresses she wore - unforgetable!

  62. Hi all,

My husband filled almost the whole puzzle before handing it over to me, but I had fun with it anyway. I didn't even check his answers! He had Jiggle instead of Wiggle, but he didn't get jage or wage. Do you think he left some undone on purpose for me?

I drink one cup of coffee right after lunch. I guess I don't drink it in the morning because I use decaf. (One hospital stay where the doctor said no caffeine, and I had THE WORST headache I've ever had. And they would't let me have a pain reliever, either. I promised myself I would never go through that again.) I get french roasted decaf from birdsandbeans.com. Being an avid birder, I am very concerned with "our" birds' wintering habitat in Central and South America, so I put some of my conservation dollars into "Bird-Friendly" shade-grown, organic, free trade coffee. With every cup I think, "Damn, that's good coffee."

Al, I just started taking magnesium today! Any one else watch Dr. Oz? I'm following his recommendations for taking supplements.

Fermatprime, your story infuriates me. It is unconscionable to leave anyone, much less a helpless patient, in urine-soaked clothing and/or bedding for 3 hours. Advise your doctor of what happened, and consider filing a complaint with your county or state health department.

    TTFN!

  63. Hello everybody.Just got back from the lab. Did the puzzle this morning before work, over mugs of Peet's Colombian coffee. We also like Don Francisco brand coffee. We find Starbucks over-roasted and a tad bitter.

Nice puzzle, very pleasant and satisfying.

Fermatprime, your experience is frightening and disheartening. I am angry at a system that would treat you so shabbily. I hope you can get the hell out of there soon.

Saw Spanglish; not a bad movie considering it's Adam Sandler. Much as I like Tea Leoni, I couldn't stand the neurotic, hyper-active, self-absorbed character she played. That's good acting to engender such feelings in a member of the audience.

Dennis, there definitely is something "solid" and reassuring about seeing your post first. Thank you.

    Best wishes to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  64. bestbird, I sure know about that caffeine-withdrawal headache! Man oh man it hurts! A couple of months ago I had a terrible headache and didn't know what the heck could have caused it. Scared me. I had thoughts of a "bwain toomuh." It turns out my wife had served fully caffeinated coffee for two weeks or so and then switched to decaffeinated, which I didn't know. Apparently that's what caused my headache. What a relief to find out! (We usually combine reagular beans with decaffeinated ones and brew that "half and half" mixture.)

So, who regularly drinks wine in the evening?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Jacye, I have lately enjoyed a nice glass of merlot or petite sirah at night after dinner. I find it helps me relax and sleep better around foodshow time (two weeks from today). I have a hard time turning off the "numbers" in my head. The one I have been enjoying lately is called Bogle. I believe it is a California wine. I am not much of a white wine drinker.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think I started the medical marijuana question with fermatprime last week.

I am still on the fence about it, but I have checked on the State of California website and they do issue legal access medical marijuana cards, with your doctor's verification. Just about every major city has licensed dispensaries and delivery services.

California patients can either grow their own up 18 plants (6 mature, 12 immature), or possess 8 oz usable.

I spoke to a chemo nurse (now there is the closest thing to a saint I'm ever going to be acquainted with) and she said their practice has quite a few patients who are approved marijuana for pain, loss of appetite, depression and even insomnia.

As far as I know only eleven states have passed medical marijuana laws. Frenchie is right about Arizona. No go...yet. I believe their Medical Marijuana Act is scheduled to appear on this November ballot.

"Speedos" appeared in one of the other puzzles today, too. Something happened I`d never seen before, one of the puzzles had "exploits" crossing "exploits" but with two different clues and meanings. Anyone else catch that?
Wanted jalapeno peppers which skewed oneliners.Ah! Mr. Coffee...we use Maxwell House everyday blend. Don`t think I`ve ever heard it called "siesta time..." "Spew" is such an evocative word! Tried so many possibilites for "reading aid" before the simple "lamp" appeared.
All in all not a difficult puzzle to "suss."

Buckeye, please don`t be a stranger. Your wit may cut at times but it is highly enjoyable.

And about peanut butter, it will take chewing gum out of hair and sticky residue off plastic wear from the label glue. Just mix it into gum or glue until they 'combine' and wash out/off.

  75. Hello Argyle, C.C. and the rest of the gang. Today's puzzle was very easy for me. I must have been on Mr. Chen's wavelength. The only misstep I had was the NE corner with a couple of unknowns - MEIR and PUZO - and I wasn't sure enough of ALEUT to get it.

I actually own the movie SPANGLISH; my son gave it to me as a gift. I don't own very many because I am not one to watch a movie over and over again. Of course, that does not include my "sick day" movies and a few other favorites.

Hand up for being a M*A*S*H fan. I never get tired of seeing the reruns.

Mr. Coffee brought a smile to my face. While I do not drink coffee, I have made oceans of it in my lifetime. I live in South Louisiana and am an oddity here. I used to drink "coffee milk" as a child, which was about a tablespoon of coffee and the rest milk. I never really liked it, and over 20 years ago gave up all caffiene. If you decide to join me in that endeavor, prepare yourself for some nasty withdrawals.

Fermatprime-So sorry to hear of your troubles. Sending healing thoughts your way. I hope that you make it home very soon.

Chickie-I must agree with you: Jello jiggles!

Marge-Happy Anniversary! I hope that you enjoy yourself. I can only hope that I will be able to celebrate as many years with my husband. We were 30 and 36 respectively when we wed.

I didn't get to the puzzle until just before supper. I have had a busy day. Doc turned me loose yesterday. He said that everything seems fine and he is just going to keep an eye on me for a while. I will go for another check-up in early December. Today, I dropped the little one off at school and went shopping, then came home and cooked pork chops and roasted sweet potatoes for supper. Once tonight's supper got going, I stuffed a roast to put in the slow cooker in the morning (which we will eat off of for two nights). Since Friday is pizza night at my house, I am good till Saturday!

A pleasant evening to you all!

  84. fermatprime, I guess I will never complain again about med. care in Madison, WI. I had to wait 15 min. one time for a nurse to respond to my
call light & we thought that was bad. My stay in the Hospital Rehab unit was excellent. In the hospital, you order from a menu when you are ready for a meal. No set time for serving the meal & waking you up or letting it sit on the table getting cold. My favorite meal was ginger-sesame salmon steak. My experience with nursing homes is that they would give much better care if they could spend more of their budget on actual nurses and CNA's rather than on office help to fill out interminable reports which have been mandated by the govt. I base my opinion on a couple of facilities where I've done volunteer work. I hope your care has improved and that you make a speedy recovery.

Congratulations, Marge, on your 53 years. We're still 5 years ahead of you. Are you a Wisconsinite, also? Where did you go for dinner?

  87. Good golly, miss Molly, what a rich discussion today. Seems like a lot of comments lately. Some days, there are many names with what appears to be very few authors that bulk it up, but today it was a delightful and diverse conversation.

Late, as usual, per night-owl nature of genes. Any puzzle comments I might make have been made already. Except maybe that it was cool to have two of my favorite five sitcoms mentioned in a puzzle - M*A*S*H and The Simpsons (it took eight years before I'd seen the latter more than trice, but when I gave it a try [and a bit o' MJ], it rivalled Calvin and Hobbes for an astute, amusing [nay, hysterical] social commentary of modern times. Only saw it for three to four years, but saw all episodes of the first ten seasons, and it was well worth the effort [I mostly despise T.V. sitcoms].)

"Aye, aye" for Dennis' early posts - I look forward to the Dennis and Hahtool wake-up posts. Good food for thought, even though I often don't read them until late. Continuity is a good thing. Some day, though, maybe my insomnia combined with an oh-so-early paper delivery and a turning over of leaves, I might have a stab at the zero comment interval. Then again, probably not.

Coffee? Not now. Mostly gave it up in December, when I gave up the evil weed (Part II), to control trigger vectors. It brought about mind-boggling, head-splitting pain, but I don't really suffer a 'stay awake' problem (rather, the reverse), so it isn't all that necessary. I do occasionally indulge in a (nice) cuppa my favorite tea (Yorkshire Gold), an herbal variety, or iceD sun tea in the afternoon, but I try to have fruit juice or a lassie (sorta like a smoothie) in the mornings more often than not. Could be the last gallon of sun tea. Boo hoo.

    Probably out of room.

If you save your content (as I do) outside of blogger, just find something else to do for a while. Come back in fifteen, thirty, or more minutes, and chances are that you'll find your post on the blog. If not, cut it down, break it up, or try again.

Goulash sure was a stew in folks' house. Toss random leftovers in a pan, stir in what veggies you can scrounge up, add a can or two of tomatoes and a bit of seasoning (i.e., salt and pepper), and viola, goulash stew. Yum, yum (sarcasm). In hindsight, it probably was a decent stew healthwise, but as a veggie-hating kid, I wasn't too keen on it. A bit ironic I've been a veggie for almost two decades...

Dennis at 9:00, indeed, we do.

Spitzboov, thanks for the molasses idea. I've just started trying to eat old-fashioned oats, and I thought they needed some sweetening. I'll give blackstrap molasses a try.

  89. One last time,

MJ is not physically addicting. Can be mentally. Personally, worst is a week of "jonesing" for the altered state of mind, then nada. I think it is legal medicinally in fourteen states, and DC see here and here. Considering it is approaching a third of the states, I'd think there are considerable questions about the sense behind the illegality elsewhere.

Personally speaking, and I have a rather wide experience of numerous substances, MJ is way, way, way (ad infinitum) less harmful and so many, many, many (ad infinitum) ways than, oh, say, alcohol or nicotine, that the fact it is illegal while the other two are legal is as mind-blowing as my caffeine withdrawl headache. Heck, an acquaintence of mine that went to both jail and prison as a nicotine and a heroin addict said both times, the evil weed was harder to go without than the poppy product.

As for uses - different strokes for different folks. Appetite? Increases greatly in most people. Depression? Can help, probably depends on variety (found a lot out about variety in trips to Holland); ditto insomnia. Pain? Well, for me, this is the one 'no dice', as all senses are exacerbated - taste, touch, sound, etc., and thus most pain (headaches in particular) feel worse. But, I know others who swear by it for pain.

However, a doctor (who is open-minded) is probably the best person to consult about the usefulness; while an experienced grower will know about properties of particular strains (??). Just wanted to add my two cents and say that just because something is not legal does not mean it is bad (hey, as a woman, it wasn't legal for me to vote not so long ago, eh?).

Enough of my rambling. And no, I have not imbibed in any mind-altering substances today...

TT for good for a while,

"flying rats" because they gather around dumpsters and are otherwise pests.
