Note from C.C.:

Our "Hard to Believe" series continues. Guess who this cute baby this. Here is another one of him and his younger brother. And yes, the boy yesterday is Splynter. (Added later: Today's mystery boy is Barry G.)

  1. Morning, all!

Typical Monday puzzle. No fuss, no muss. If I had to pick a nit, I'd say that HORSY should be spelled HORSEY, but I'd probably be wrong. It just looks odd to me, but that doesn't prove anything.

Favorite clue/answer today was definitely "Whopper junior" for FIB.

    Have a great Monday!

  2. Good Morning, Argyle and friends. This was a speed run, but I enjoyed the ride. I had lots of fills that I had to go back and read the clue because I had already filled in the answers.

Whopper Junior = FIB was my favorite clue today also.

  3. Good Morning Argyle C.C. et al.

You're right, Argyle - not much to comment on, was there?

Like Barry and Hahtool, I thought the clue for FIB was great. The rest of the fill was quite clean - just right for a Monday, with nary a pasquinade to be found.

HORSY is the accepted spelling, with "horsey" being an alternate form. I have a friend who loves to ride, and she runs with a "horsy set".

    Have a great Monday, everyone!

  4. Good Morning, Folks. Thanks bob fisher for an easy start to the week.

Enjoyed the puzzle. It was an easy one, and that's OK.

Glad to see one of my old favorites, NEWT. Gimmi's are great!

I have been absent from the blog for a while, having no access to the internet while in Texas. Finally, this weekend, I got a WiFi device that helped me at the hotel.

I am still working on Sunday's puzzle since I did not print it until last night.

    Glad to be back.

  5. Morning Argyle, CC and All,

Flew through this one and very much enjoyed the easy workout at the beginning of the workweek.

Whopper got me thinking of food so I ate one of my sandwiches already.

Sweltering for us in the 90's today. This stuff really wreaks havoc with me.

    Have a good one.

  6. Hey all,

The puzzle was easy fun, and it is good to see Abejo back and Maniac so early in the day, but I wanted to remind all of you in the grip of record heat, do not overdo and stay hydrated. While people complain about our Forida heat, we have nothing to compare.

  7. Good Morning CC, Argyle and all,

Thanks, Argyle, for your notes this morning. Interesting about Samuel Morse’s telegraph.

Robert Fisher did a great job on the Monday edition. It was just such a puzzle that got me hooked years ago.
Easy with fun theme. Thanks, Robert.

I would love to see Splynter’s pic next to baby pic. Cute.
I have no idea on the current beautiful boy. Fun to find out who.

Glad to see Abejo back. By the way, has any one heard from Gunghy? Hi , Nice Cuppa.

    Have a nice day everyone.

  8. Good morning, Argyle and gang. Easy peasy Monday puzzle. Reading through Argyle's write up, I realized there were several clues that I had not read.

Hand up for fave clue, 'Whopper junior', but I doubt that a 99 cent FIB sandwich is included in the new Burger King offerings.

Photo finishs? I thought those were gloss or matte.

    Welcome back Abejo.

Throw in sepia and you have enough for a theme.

  10. I had a quick fly through too. Had the same reaction as Barry to HORSY, and didn't even see HERSCHEL after it was there. Also liked FIB.

Yesterday we had 97 here with 51% humidity. Today is predicted to be at least that bad. Took the dog out for a pee and could hardly breathe already at 8 am. The windows downstairs are all steamy on the outside and we only cool to 76 in the house. I've never seen it like this.

I changed my avatar to show my hand-colored-on-sepia portrait. I commented late a couple of nights ago that my aunt did the same kind of coloring and retouching as C.A.'s mom.

    Stay cool, everyone!

  11. Good morning Argyle and all.

Nice easy Monday. Not much to add to the other comments. Theme fill was easy to get but I did not get the 'unifier' until the end when it was not needed for the solve. Took umbrage at my shout out at 39a - OLD codger ☹. Liked the FIB clue ☺.

    Have a good day.

  13. Hi gang,

Fun and fast, that is just perfect for a Monday! Flew through this one and only unknown was 36D and that was filled in nicely by the perps.

I feel so sorry for all of you suffering in that heat and humidity. I gripe about western Oregon's rain but I'll sure take that any day. Like Mainiac, I don't do well in those temps.

Kazie, cute picture! Lots of cuties on here.

I have no guess as to the mystery boy.

    Thanks, Robert and Argyle.

Not much to say. Got HERSCHEL immediately but had trouble spelling. I loved Peter Gunn. Did not see FIB until I came here. Cute answer!

Had same reaction to HORSY as some of you.

Have been having trouble sleeping more than an hour at a time. Right knee decided to chime in to pain concerto.

  16. I think my Hotmail account has been hacked into. I just received 23 undeliverable message notices from people I haven't emailed lately at all. Something from an electronics company I've had no dealings with either. I went in and changed my password and added a security question, which I hope will help. But if any of you who are in my contacts list get something questionable from me, please know that it didn't come from me at all. I apologize.

  17. Hi All ~~

This was a quick one but fun. Quite different from my struggle yesterday! I agree with all comments already made ... I, too, liked 'Whopper junior'--FIB.

Hot and humid here at the beach in RI with thunderstorms expected this afternoon. It seems many of you are experiencing the same.

Another "cute guy" today ... hmm... my first guess was going to be Argyle, but then after seeing another suggestion I'm thinking that it just might be Jazz!

Enjoy the day and stay cool ~~~

  18. Good Morning All, Maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night, but I can't think of much to say about this nice Monday level puzzle. Oh yes, it was a nice relief after last Saturday!

I liked seeing HERSCHEL Bernardi. Thanks, Argyle for the "Peter Gunn" reminder.

There were a couple of clues that were questions, but 55A)"Whopper junior?" was the only question marked clue that indicated a punny answer. It had to be a favorite.

It looks like our new "Hard To Believe" boy had a hand-tinted photo with his brother. He and his brother are wearing polo shirts, which I don't think were popular for little boys before the early 1950's. I'm guessing Jazzbumpa.

Your aunt's work was lovely, Kazie, and a very pretty picture of you.

I'm sorry to hear about all the hot, humid weather in the East and Midwest. Not easy to deal with.

It's 12:30 here in Naples, and I just finished the puzzle and blog. Didn't wake up until 9:30; asleep a midnight. This retirement is great! Of course, sleeping is something I do best.

Argyle, of course, we need you today and every day you're the write up guy!

  20. Good day, Argyle, C.C. and all CHUMS.

No FIB, this was easy but a fun romp with a clever theme.

I remember HERSCHEL Bernardi as a great actor who appeared now and then on TV.

Just one nit, emotionally expressive, LYRIC, I would prefer lyrical.

I suppose Oscar de la RENTA would not use Avis.

But soccer and tennis are about the only sports I would ever bother watching, other than winter Olympics. I probably wouldn't have watched this game were it not for our son and d-i-l's urging, all the way from Germany. They had quite a party there to watch with her family. Then, at about midnight for them, called us to discuss it after their guests left. We all felt that Japan needed the win more than we did.

  27. Hi Argyl, Lemonade, CA and gang.

    Mystery boy is not me.

Nice puzzle to start the week. Tight theme with long entries. It's easy to under-appreciate a simple puzzle, so congrats to Mr. Fisher for a job well done.

I had OVA for OVO, and faltered in that section with no one to egg me on. This put me out of STEP.

    "ASPS again," he gasps.

"Why do I spell ROPE as ROAP when it's vertical?" he YELPed.

MI Jazz Fest yesterday was a great time.

Nate's tournament team played over the weekend in blistering heat, including 3 games on Sunday. They finished 4th out of ten, and got a trophy. They lost 3 games by 1 run each! Big turnaround from the previous week when they were 0 for 4.

We went to the Saturday a.m. game, when they played like the 8-yr-olds they are, and got smoked (by other 8-yr-olds.) They key to wining at that level is to catch the ball!

    Cheers!

  29. Lucina, Marshall's Photo Oils are specifically used to tint photographs. They are transparent and are applied with small brushes and swabs on matte finish photos. Just like other oils, they are first blended on a palette to achieve the perfect colors. I don't know how long the company has been in business, but if Kazie's aunt and my mother didn't use Marshall's, they used a similar high quality professonal brand.

I think most professional colorists had an art background and worked in other mediums as well. My mother also used pastels and watercolors for photo coloring, but oils were the standard.

I don't know if it were true of Kazie's aunt, but my mother retouched negatives and tinted photographs because it allowed her to work from home. I still have a "scent memory" of the oils and other chemicals she used.

  30. Due to the intense heat here I stayed in today and solved the puzzle. I, like many of you breezed right through it. Incidentally, you can still get a Whopper Jr on the dollar menu in most states. There’s not too much to add to what to say about the puzzle. My guess for the little cute guy is Mainiac.

Stay cool everyone. We’re not supposed to get any relief until this weekend, so it’s going to be a long week.

Today is National Ice Cream Day. What’s your favorite flavor? Mine is pecan praline.

  31. CA,
You obviously have more information than I do, being closer to the action at home. I was so little, and although my aunt did also work at home, I wasn't there enough to really take much notice. I do have several of her artworks on our walls here though, some pencil and charcoal, some oils, and some water colors as well. Several are fanciful things suitable for a little girl's bedroom, so with two sons, I wasn't able to have them in their rooms, unfortunately.

  32. Hola Everyone, A fast run for me as well. My only speed bump was the spelling of Herschel/I couldn't remember it had a C in the middle. That was fixed fast.

I had a chuckle with the word Horsy. Chi Chi is not usually in my vocabulary, but that also filled in with all the across words around it.

An Aerobics accessory/Step gave me a question mark after I filled it in. I wanted Bra, Leotard, or shoes of some sort.

Jazz, The key to a winning baseball team of 8 year olds, is a pitcher who doesn't hit the top of the backstop! Our girls' team really had a hard time with their pitchers! LOL.

  33. CA, My sister and I have have hand colored sepia pictures and I've always wondered how the artist was able to get the colors of the dresses and such so close to what we were actually wearing.

However, I had on a blue dress and my sister a pink dress in one of our sets of pictures and the ribbons in our hair were pink for me and blue for my sister. Mom was so mad as they were just the opposite, but not to be changed after the deed was done. We heard about that for a long time!

  34. Jeannie, will the new food items have shown up in my local BK? I want to try the California burger and a milk shake. The Whopper Jr. is certainly a bargain. Extra mayo and hold the onions for me.

Favorite ice cream? Almost any kind is OK but my favorite usually involves coffee. The local Ralphs supermarket seems to have their own new version of premium ice cream. My favorite flavor of theirs is Tiramisu.

Even though the rest of my family disagrees with me, I'm not a big fan of the places like Coldstone that charges high prices for smushing up some other goodies in your ice cream. If they go to the trouble to make a really good ice cream flavor in the first place, why would I think it will be improved by mixing in some M&Ms or something similar?

  39. Chickie -

These tournaments use a pitching machine - a simple spring-loaded lever arm that is operated by an adult. There is a kid in the pitcher's position - more or less, but he is just one more fielder.

Nate's playing in the outfield because he's the only kid with a strong, accurate arm.

In the municipal league they were working them into pitching - no more than 2 innings a week. Nate gets it across the plate, and usually had 2 or three K's in an inning.

    Cheers!

  41. Jazzbumpa, Dagnabbit!..well, it was only a guess. Now, I'm guessing wildly.. Barry G? Tinbeni? Bill G? If I keep going, eventually I will be right.

Chickie, As I recall my mom got a proof photo with an attached list, along with the photo to be colored. Eye color, complexion, hair color, clothing, etc. were all marked down. It must have been difficult for a colorist to get it exactly right without being at the sitting. Too bad your colorist was having a very bad day!

BTW, Marti's tinted sepia photo is a lovely example of it being done right.

    Seen, LOL, we won't tell.

Fib was a fun answer but 24A stumped me- never rhought of Pooh and didn't know chichi as showy.

Their bait/lure for the 800 lb. gators is chicken carcasses that are sprinkled with some secret spice and then hung low over the swamp. When they come back and the line is taut, they pull a .22 rifle out of their tackle box and shoot the animals and drag them very laboriously into the boat. It's like a car wreck, you gotta look and their cajun dialogue sometimes requires subtitles and bleeps.

  52. Jazzbumpa, I like the idea of a pitching machine, but I haven't seen a girls' league yet that uses one. It is really, really painful to watch a team that doesn't have a half-way decent pitcher lose to umpteen walks, etc. I've sat through 4 daughter's baseball games and 1 grand now who is a pitcher. A good one, too, now that she has hit sixth grade and has been playing ball since age 7.

It is so much fun to see the children progress in their skills from year to year. Pitching has got to be the hardest in my opinion.

CA, thanks for the coloration explanation. Everything was in black and white, way back when. So the artist just had to go by what was given at the studio.

I thought Kazie's picture was exceptionally pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Chickie, my grandson's baseball league must use the same pitching machine referred to by JzB. The coach sets the spring-loaded arm, puts in the ball and releases it. Once it's initially set, it throws the ball over the plate pretty consistently. Basically, nobody walks. The batters either hit the ball or strike out. Early in the season in Jordan's league, if the batter missed five pitches, they set up a tee. Nobody kept score and it went very well. When they graduated from the tee option, Jordan began striking out and understandably, got quickly discouraged.

  55. The tournaments have different rules, so the kids tend to get a little confused. Last week, they played with 60 foot bases. The municipal league games, and this week's tournament, used 50 foot bases. Adjusting to 60 feet was very difficult, and might have contributed to their 0 for 4 result.

The last tournament allowed 5 pitches - plus one, if the 5th is fouled off. Then, another foul is an out. No walks.

If the kids can't pitch, then the situation Chickie described is cruel - and rather stupid, as well. I blame the adults who make the rules.

    Cheers!

  56. Favorite ice cream(s): coffee, chocolate chip mint and some sort of toffee/butter brickle/caramel.

As you can see by my new avatar, my folks had this one colored too. I haven't a clue as to why. There wasn't color film back then but this was just a picture of me on my tricycle, not a portrait. Oh well, maybe it's just because I was a first child. You know how everyone goes wild with a first one and by the time the 3rd, 4th or beyond happens, they are not so 'wild' any longer :) Also, they are probably short on money.

  57. Carol, was that colored or just printed with sepia tone? Sepia was fairly common and didn't take any hand painting.

I got new remotes for the DVRs from our cable company. She just threw them into a big box with about 200 other old remotes. I told her I wanted the batteries back since they were almost new. Too late! They were already in the big pile. The new remotes sure do work better though.

  58. Carol, i have a few really beautiful hand colored pics of my oldest brother, with such pretty blond hair and onk cheeks, many b/w pics of my brother and maybe two of me from about three years old; non befire. It pays to be the oldest.

Bill G. The lesson is always change back the batteries

  59. I just came across this, one of the funniest songs from the folk song era I've ever heard. I'll bet you know it already.

  60. Bill G: the actual picture is much more 'colorful' than it appears in the avatar. My sweater really shows up as red, not a brilliant hue, but not sepia either, since sepia is mostly sad browns. My hair was nearly white so that was how it showed. I don't really know that much about film back then but I really can't imagine it being colorized by any artist.

  61. The ears are wrong for Barry.

I think you maybe right about that, Kazie. I was going to guess the pictures were of me as well, but now I'm not so sure...

  63. BillG, BK is rolling out the ice cream based on when the stores get the new equipment. I see that the distributors in CA Fullerton and Pleasonton should all be functional by mid-August. The CA Whopper however is nation-wide and coming to you no later than the second week in August. I had the pleasure of taste testing it, and it's really good.

Very hot here and a whole lot of humidity, to make matters worse my air at home is out. I swear it's 25 degrees lower in the basement. I took the single mattress out of the office and put it downstairs. It's makeshift but at least I can sleep. Did I get my number?

  65. very interesting information today about the coloration process. I never realized that many people did this in their homes.

favorite ice cream: Lapperts Kauai Pie: coffee ice cream laced with fudge, macadamia nuts and coconut in a fresh waffle cone. Have to settle for Ben and Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch when not in Hawaii. It has gradually formed a lei around my middle.

  67. Late again. Tough day.

Nope, the mystery boy isn't me. I'm the last of five kids, and by the time I came along my folks didn't care so much about photos, AND cash was always tight. I only know of one early photo of me, my 2nd grade picture, and I can't find it!

Favorite ice cream: I never went in for fancy flavors. It's a tie between a good vanilla and a good coffee.

    Loved the deer story, Spitz.

    Night all
