Today's

the backyard, then came in for the challenge. Triple stacks of 10- and
11-letters in a classic pinwheel, with some notables;

Unable to sleep again. Brad and Doug's offering was Saturday difficult, but easier for me then yesterday. Splynter, thanks for your early write-up. Hope you get the church ramp done.
ReplyDeleteVery few, if any, STEEP GRADE signs in Kansas.
ESCALLOPED- We say scalloped potatoes around here and I usually buy them in the box.
Wish Sun screen with SPF would have been available in my childhood. As a light skin freckled red-head I had many sever sunburns while growing up.
FACE SPONGE- Not in my make-up kit.
DREW CAREY for "What's My Line?
How about Gary Moore?
Knew Maleficient was the villainess in "Sleeping Beauty" but took awhile to fill in SORCERESS. She scared me to death when she had the thorns grow around the prince. Guess I was a pretty sheltered little kid. BTW, did you know Angelina Jolie is playing Maleficient in the new Disney non-cartoon version?
Good night all!
Good morning Splynter, C.C. et al.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of a FROZEN ROPE, but it sounds like an apt description. Thanks for all the explanations, Splynter!
I hope Misty takes the challenge today, because this was a delightful Saturday offering from Brad and Doug. There really wasn’t anything that was a total unknown, with the possible exception of the OGLALA tribe. But perps to the rescue on that one. Loved the clues for ART FORGERY “Bad pictures?” and LINT ROLLER “Valuable aid for a cat owner.” Boy, don’t I know that!!
I wasn’t crazy about ALOP or EPEEIST, but the triple stacks were impressive.
Have a great day, everyone!
Morning, all!
ReplyDeleteHad trouble all over today, but managed to work my way through most of it. The SW corner defeated me utterly in the end, though. FACE SPONGE, ARID, OGLALA, NELS, EYRE, CTNS... you name it, I couldn't get it. A complete and utter disaster in that section.
Ah well, tomorrow is another day...
He didn't play last night, so it took a moment for this Yankee fan to remember #13 - ARod. Never one of my favorites
ReplyDeleteHi,y'all, fn puzzle but better write up. Excellent write up, Splynter. Always enjoyable. This was a struggle but it's Saturday and my time is limited. Have an early Halloween party to prepare for and my costume isn't ready. Going as a little slashed and a lot sloshed Julia Child.
ReplyDeleteCC: thank you for the great picture of the Coven. Everybody looks so pretty, happy and healthy. Who would've guessed! Sooo sad. I'm like Bill G., sad and losing another friend. mortality sucks! So, we try to focus on the positive ...I'm positive mortality sucks!
My Julia Child quote variation: Life itself is the proper binge...with a good drink. Bon Appetit!
The Nancy Lopez clue is WRONG she was NOT a 4 time winner of the LPGA
ReplyDeleteThe SW mocked me and I had to go online for a little red letter help. FACE SPONGE was never going to come and Encumber, Glasse, Asp and others looked so good. Even PROMENADER? was a candidate for line studier. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteMusings
-Our city built a SKATEBOARD park only after extensive research on liability
-The pallets I worked with had bricks on them and I spilled a thousand of ‘em with a forklift one day
-My knowledge of wards after Dick Grayson and Little Orphan Annie is spotty at best
-Andy Reid suffered a heartbreaking tragedy at the start of this season
-I had to “Heimlich” a kid who had a Cheeto LODGEd in his throat
-We were in Ogallala (named for OGLALA tribe), NE last month
-SABRE TOOTH deer have been unearthed at Ash Falls State Park in northern Nebraska. Click on Animals to see picture of this and other animals at this incredible site
-When trading in a car, it’s all about the “TO BOOT”
-When goalie didn’t work, I went to EPPEIER at first. Wrong suffix.
-Pawn Stars have a stable of experts that seem to come in at a moment’s notice to check for FORGERIES of all sorts. I know it’s staged but I like it.
-Slumping AROD got benched for pinch hitter Raul Ibanez this week and Raul hit two homers to win the game. Arod’s attitude and big game failures make him not one of my favs.
-p.s. I did yesterday’s INVISI BLE MAN puzzle in the car on the way to Lincoln after golf and don’t like blogging on an iPhone. I thought it was spectacular!
Splynter, great write up. This puzzle took me a long time, but perseverance paid off. It was very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI think FROZEN ROPE is perfect for a line drive. BTW. YAY, Yankees! I've been a lifelong fan.
I think I was offered the GRE to qualify for my MA program, not the Ph.D. which I don't have. I chose Miller's instead. It takes the same kind of intuitive thinking and word association used in Xwords.
"Bad pictures" was my last entry because it had a plural clue for a singular answer.
I love homemade scalloped potatoes. I think I'll make some today. My mom made scalloped oysters, too. ESCALLOP is given as a variation of "scallop." It seems kind of old fashioned.
Another brain-bruising Saturday puzzle.
ReplyDeleteWill someone please explain "Cockeyed: ALOP"?
Good morning everyone. Good job Splynter (and Mike). Your 1a comment; LMAO.
ReplyDeleteNot my cup of tea today. Got about ⅓ w/o help then turned on the red letters. Knew 31d was probably SAAR something but had to wait for the 'a' in OGLALA to give me BASIN. FACE SPONGE didn't help the SW corner. Tried 'kidney' before LENTIL. Don't normally think of lentil as a bean; more like a hard pea. My idea of escutcheon.
I think Brad and Doug did a good job; it was just a little beyond me today.
Happy Birthday today to the Navy, its 237th.
Enjoy the day.
Splynter: Excellent write-up & links.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see "The Ramp" pictures. (I'm easily amused!)
DNF ... My new "Red-Ink-Pen" didn't help me at all. SW corner is ugly Ink-Blot.
Don't think I've ever seen a STEEP-GRADE sign here in Tampa Bay area. lol
Anon @9:22, The NANCY LOPEZ clue said "Four-time LPGA Tour Player of the Year". She won that AWARD in 1978, 1979, 1985 & 1988.
(Do a little research before crying foul. The wiki search took less than a minute).
A-ROD, Yanks #13, will probably be in line-up tonight.
I love the "Evil-Empire". Go Yankees !!!
Cheers !!!
ANONYMOUS 9:22 AM- read the clue again.
ReplyDeleteKudos! I'm rarely defeated by a crossword puzzle, but I had a LOT of blank spaces this morning.
ReplyDeleteGood morning:
ReplyDeleteThis made the last couple of Silky's look like child's play. Northwest corner did me in and needed a one letter clue before all fell into place. Spent an " inordinate" amount of time on it but it was a worthy challenge. Thanks, Brad and Doug, and thanks to Sleepless Splynter for a fine expo.
A-Rod is walking proof that #13 is unlucky. His ego is almost as large as his salary. Go Yanks!
I think our temp fell into the 20's last night so time to get out the cozy fleece tops and the warmer-than-jeans corduroys.
One of my nephews is visiting from Flordia and requested some of his favorite Lebanese foods for dinner tonight, which I also will be enjoying: tabooleh (sp?) chicken and rice, and, my favorite, kibbeh. Also, marinated, broiled chicken wings. Can't wait!
Have a super Saturday.
Back up for a short time again. Sent DH off to the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteRemembered OGLALA tribe from prior cwds. Has such a musical sound. I think they were the organizers of SD Wounded Knee incident.
YR, my daughter took GRE to be accepted into 5 to 6 yr Ph.D program at Michigan State. She would not have done well with intuitive thinking test. She is now in her fourth yr. She has passed her comps and loves working in the lab and wanted no part of teaching.
BTW, I found it interesting that lab mice are very expensive because they have to come from the same genetic line. Probably scientist on the blog already knew this info, but it hadn't occurred to me.
Back to bed shortly.
Well, with Marti's encouragement I tried to be patient and steady with this morning's puzzle and it paid off more than I expected. Got over half, mostly in the East, although I did get SAP, SORCERESS, PROHIBIT, and EYRE in the West. So, thanks, Brad, Doug, and Splynter for a tough but enjoyable Saturday morning.
ReplyDeleteLois, I loved your thoughts on mortality this morning. We are losing friends left and right this year and it's tough to stay realistic and positive at the same time. You've clearly figured out how to do that, and I'll keep your funny words of wisdom in mind.
Have a good weekend, everybody!
Wow I got my rear end kicked around here today. I was stuck at every turn in the beginning. Two and half hours later it finally started to make a bit of sense, although it was still a DNF for me. First one in a long time. Away for the day tomorrow at a golf tournament so I guess i will get back at it on Monday. Enjoy the rest of the weekend everybody.
ReplyDeleteJust watch if you are an animal lover.
ReplyDeleteOff to attempt the puzzle...
Took me longer than usual. SW did me in as well. Saturdays usually take me longer because if I have to look up something like say, REDCLOUD in Wikipedia, I then begin to read all about him and usually go off to other websites as well before I get back to the puzzle.
ReplyDeleteIt takes longer, but I'm an early riser so it's not a big deal. And I learn something along the way.
Go Irish!
Greetings! Splynter, a dozen kudos to you if you finished this unassisted!
ReplyDeleteI jumped all over the grid before a toe hold stuck. Finally, finished the bottom east although with OUI before BON and didn't know ONO but the light went on after it was filled. That ONO!
Ironically AROD jumped right out but then decided to search for all the names I didn't know or was unsure of, DREWCAREY, KARA, NED. At least that gave me some validity with which to start.
It still took me an INORDINATE amount of time as Irish Miss said.
Also I never know if it's ORR or OTT but ERECTS set me straight.
The SW bit me hard! FALLS, ARID and EYRE were filled but the rest inched agonizingly slowly.
Thanks for the challenge today, Brad and Doug.
Try to have a joyous Saturday, everyone!
Lois, it's so good to see you back in the saddle again! I've missed you.
ReplyDeleteHeartRx @ 5:46am:
ReplyDeleteDang, I had to click on your "new" avatar to clearly see it was a glass of wine.
I already miss your "Heart".
Avatar (he only answers to that name) knows HE looks like a snifter of Pinch.
Lucina @ 11:40am
OTT for Giants (the baseball guys in NY then San Fran).
ORR for Boston Bruins (hockey great, not the UCLA guys).
When solving, I had a problem parsing the answer for 27-D, Bad pictures?
I was wondering who the hell is this GERY guy ... and why did they make ART FOR him?
You know, ART FOR ... GERY. lol
Well the Sun is setting somewhere.
Cheers !
Well, if a puzzle is going to have too many sports clues, it might as well be on a Sat. when I won't finish w/o Googling, anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe only sports clue I got - through crosses - was Nancy Lopez.
The French clues were a bit off. Had oui before BON and lES before CES. But I never studied French.
About the only things I got right off were SABERTOOTH, HALS, and ESCALLOP. Wanted Wohin or Wovon for WHENCE, but realized it was German.
Educational moment: BENET. 1942 - William Rose, and 1929 Stephen.
Tinbeni@11:56
ReplyDeleteThank you! My mnemonic shall be Giant OTT and Bruin ORR
Sfingi@12:14
Thank you, too, for the dates on the brothers BENET.
Good afternoon everyone.
ReplyDeleteLois, good to see you, and thanks for the shout out last night.
CED, great link dog rescuing friends and an associated one to cat rescuing dog. Loved them.
Got 8 correct answers to this puzzle. Had oui not BON, and mired not LODGE. So I couldn't even get LENTIL.
I lived at 7200 feet in Colorado, and never saw a sign with a % on it warning of STEEP GRADE-but we had many!
Obviously a DNF for me!
Have a great Saturday everyone.
Cheers
Misty: Thank you. You are absolutely right. Being realistic and positive are often difficult to resolve in harmony. I'm sorry for all of our mutual sorrows and losses. A life binge is in fine order for tonight.
ReplyDeleteLucina: LOL so well put! Thank you. It's good to have a little time to be back. The school nazi is still kickin' our A's. Glad to see you too.
Tinbeni: LMAO Art For Gery. How many times have we each done that! Love your comment about the sun setting somewhere. I think about you & all my virtual friends here around sunset as I too raise my glass. Cheers!
Go OU SOONERS!!!! What a clinic!!!
Well, another mental exercise. I got skateboard and the entire eastern slope. I could remember the discussion some time ago about some kind of ROPE but couldn't come up with it. Had READER. ALOP? Are you kidding? Thanks, Splynter!
ReplyDeleteOn the west side I did get FALLS, OGLALA, & EYRE. The Ogallalah aquifer is a main water source in western KS & Neb. Red Cloud is an Indian Chief immortalized with a town in Neb named for him.
The STEEP GRADE signs are prevalent in the Rocky Mountains. Truckers certainly use the information.
IRIS: "Whose Line is it anyway" was an improvisational comedy show of just a few years ago with Drew Carey moderating. Very funny bunch of guys.
CED: Now that's what I call a true retriever. Very smart dogs! I had one once, but he wasn't trained.
Good afternoon to all and happy weekend. I thought it was easier than s Silkie, only one smudge at inordinate. Like Tin at first couldn't figure out who Gery was. Have a great day to all RJW.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, all. I'm late to the party today. I was designated pancake flipper at our community yard sale and pancake breakfast.
ReplyDeleteI managed to complete the puzzle by fits and starts between hungry customers. It was a battle, but at least it didn't turn into a DNF like yesterday.
Now it's off to the airport to pick up brother and SIL from FL who are coming for a visit via AZ. Don't ask.
Well, i am used to Saturday being a DNF, but i had fun anyway.
ReplyDelete11A i misread escutcheon as eustation, thought ears might fit.
Alop? Hmm, i guess it got past editing, but not the dictionary.
24A Olympian with a mask= apeeist??? a-peeist??? I dunno, but if they make peeing an Olympic sport,,, i would wear a mask too!
Drew CArey' improv, Whose Line Is IT Anyway
43A Stella by Starlight Beautiful! But you must watch "The Uninvited". I cannot find the clip, but the scene where Ray Milland plays the song he wrote for Stella on the piano,,, & the candles quiver,,, the room gets dark,,, & he seems to become possessed while playing! The music becaomes so eerie, it is spine tingling!
CED:
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! I chuckled out loud at your comments.
Seeing the clip of Whose Line is it Anyway, reminded me that I had watched it a few times. It must have aired on nights I worked.
ReplyDeleteBut the format made me realize that the master of ceremonies at the wedding I attended in MINN must be a fan. He divided everyone into two groups, men and women and had them recreate scenes en masse, but sans talking or singing.
It was the battle of the sexes and he used the topics of 1. hunting for a bear, 2. old people in a nursing home, 3. a runway fashion show, 4. the nativity scene, etc. It was absolutely hilarious!! The men won the fashion runway scene because they had a guy who modeled superbly with exaggerated poses.
Now all I can think of are (e)scalloped potatoes. Yellow Rocks, my Mom made scalloped oysters too every year for Thanksgiving. Lots of rolling pin-rolled out saltines, scalded milk and butter and baked.
ReplyDeleteHusband knew frozen rope, but I'll be darned if I ever heard Vin Scully say anything but a hard hit line drive, and I've been listening to him a loooong time.
I imagine any state that has steep grades has STEEP GRADE signs. Although that is what the sign is called, the message is often, but not always, conveyed only by an illustration and may include the percent of grade. Have you seen signs like these illustrations?
ReplyDeleteLink steep grade signs
CHASSE was a gimmee for me. The term is used in round dancing. Although I don't participate in it, I watch the round dances which are often interspersed between the square dance sets (called tips.)
I love Drew Carey's Whose Line Is It Anyway? I have spend the last 45minutes ROTFL traveling down Memory Lane trying to find a clip for you to enjoy. They are all hilarious. For a good time just go to Youtube who's line is it anyway. Here is one slighlty DF example.

Thanks all who welcomed me yesterday. The farm I grew up in is in Allegany County between Jamestown and Corning.
ReplyDeleteMy mom always made scalloped potatoes, my boys never seemed to like them. They are the ultimate comfort food for me.
Hi klilly, welcome.
ReplyDeleteCED, very funny. That clip is one I preveiwed and enjoyed, too. I posted immediately after all my hilarious previewing, so I only saw yours now. Lucina, the wedding skits sound like a hoot.
klily
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the blog! New posters are always welcome here. I hope you plan to stay.
YR
They were a hoot! Best wedding entertainment I have ever seen and I've been to more than a few.
Hello everybody. You guys crack me up!
ReplyDeleteThis puzzle defeated me. Even after looking up some of the things I didn't know I still was unable to finish. For some reason the answers simply would not emerge to me.
As 24D was emerging, I kept thinking to myself, "If this turns out to be EPEEIST I'm gonna croak."
*croak!*
Best wishes to you all.
Tinbeni @ 11:56, how about a glass of wine with heart?
ReplyDeleteMisti, keep at it!! BTW, Barry Silk's puzzle was in the "other" paper today, if you want to give him a go...
ReplyDeleteYellowrocks, thanks for saving my butt, I linked that Whose Line is it Anyway without looking at it, thinking "it's best of, its gotta be hilarious." I did not realize that they cut it to pieces so that only a seasoned watcher would know what was going on! I just watched my clip, & the only thing that made me smile was in the last 2 minutes, Collins as Frankenstein looking for a mate.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, in YR's clip, did anyone stop ROTFL at the end to see the audience giving a standing ovation!
Anywho,,, Steep grade signs deserve a second look, because this may be my "only" chance to link Harry Chapins' 30,000 lbs of bananas.
Was "Whose Line is it anyway?" on network television? I only saw it on cable channel Comedy Central.
ReplyDeleteYellowrocks
ReplyDeleteWhile I was reviewing your "steep grade signs", I noticed a few "dangerous curves" that someone evidently slipped into the very long page.
Old Sage in Virginia Beach
In high school the boys used to call us Soft Shoulders and Dangerous Curves,
ReplyDeleteI too found this puzzle easier than yesterday. I have lived in the sailing world here for years so knew marconi rig. Learning moment for me was the Saar Basin. Added it to my list of geography items I learn from xwords..Thanks for the great write up Splynter. Loved seeing frozen rope in the puzzle as baseball is my favourite sport. Have a great Sunday all!
ReplyDeleteHiya!
ReplyDeleteProbably me today, but I found this puzzle almost APPALLINGly difficult. Had to leave it awhile and come back to it a few times. At one point (FACE SPONGE) I said to myself "Why do I bother with these things?" Who the H---says FACE sponge? -- it's just SPONGE, period. Took me forever to get that one. Honestly, I may just turn to Sudoku. At least there's logic there, LOL.
I'm with you on EPEE IST--Gawd, give me a break. . .
As a Lower Brule member, I had no prob with OGLALA.
All in all, a very challenging Saturday puzzle. (groan)
Thanks splynter for a fine writeup, and Brad and Doug for a challenging (if annoying) day.
I wrote the above post before reading the blog. Thinking I was having probs with the cw because of my frame of mind today. We found a large growth on my dog last night, near his ribs, and rushed him to the vet this morning. Turns out there are other, smaller, growths and one, especially, is suspicious. He had to have blood work and X-rays today. X-rays show that if there's any cancer, it probably hasn't metastisized ... Blood work results won't come in till Monday. He's ten yrs old and always seems to feel fine. I'm beside myself....
ReplyDeleteI see, though that a lot of you had problems with today's cw, AS WELL. So maybe my mind's not so off. Don't know how I'll be between now and Monday, though, but I'll try my best... It sure helps having this blog and your comments to keep my mind off of things I can do nothing about. Thanks All.
And I thought I was staring out so well.
ReplyDelete1A: SNOWBOARDS
15A: UNDERSTUDY, which does not play well with 1A
AriadneArts, my heart goes out to you. Dogs are members of the family, especially after ten years, and it's devastating when they begin to develop their first serious medical problems. I will keep my fingers crossed and send my most hopeful vibes that your pup will be okay.
ReplyDeleteAriadne, were you the person having trouble learning how to link?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure sorry to hear about your dog. I hope the tests turn out well.
Do you usually try Saturday puzzles? For me, they're especially daunting and they aren't as much fun since they don't have a theme. I turn on red letters and plug away so I will have some idea what people are talking about here on the blog.
Barbara is stressing out over the Yankee game.
AriadneArts @8:54 - I am so sorry to hear of your dog's problems and hope the prognosis is nothing but good news. And a belated welcome to the blog.
ReplyDeleteTinbeni, as of right now, the "Evil Empire" is performing like the Keystone Kops! Enough already. As far as A-Rod is concerned, I'll remain silent. At least the Fighting Irish of Notde Dame came through!
@Klilly - Not too too far from you - the Mohawk Valley. Had several friends in dairy farming, a challenging way to make a living. One fellow lost everything to "the Agway." An older man told him the best investment he could make was in a lunch pail. He made a great computer programmer. He and a Chinese immigrant wrote the first operating system for the NYS DMV. God bless anyone who carries on in farming.
ReplyDeleteI'm another one who didn't like scalloped potatoes; but, my mother made everything from scratch and I liked most of it.
Misty, Bill G. and Irish Mist: Thanks so much for your kind thoughts. Regardless I'd the blood results, he is scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning, early. He's laying right here beside me at the moment--not a care in the world. And we think WE're so smart...
ReplyDeleteI've had dogs all my life (and cats) and loved every one of them, but this guy is the most amazing. I rescued him in Michigan -- he'd been abused, etc. He is the most LOVING animal I have ever lived with. I mean, we go to the park, and ANY animal, (even big hostile male dogs) is someone for him to love on, AND he always wins them over! Go figure.
Bill G. Yes, I'm compulsive enough to do the Saturday AND the Sunday. In between, I do the NYT (I'm a native NYCer), Today's only Friday and I had to red-letter it bit. Oh well ...LOL
ReplyDeleteBTW All: Please forgive the 'typos' in my responses. I'm usually on my iPad, and Safari decides what i 'really' want to write. For instance, often when I write "will" it changes it to "we'll". Very annoying, and I don't always catch it.
Thanks, all. I'll report back re my dog, Casey, on Tuesday. Fingers crossed ...
AriadneArts - Best of luck with your pooches' problems. We certainly love our pets and always hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI am also an animal lover, Ariadne and will be thinking of you and your dog until you get in the results. My elderly dog is 15 1/2 and it is a day to day decision as to how much longer she will have quality of life. However, for today she is doing great. My other dog is her daughter so when she goes Sam will have a hard time.
ReplyDeleteBill G. it was me who was wanting to know how to link things. For some reason when I click on anyone's email address my computer won't show the result. I am confounded by technical stuff..Just got a new phone last month, an android and am also trying to learn to use it! sigh...
Thanks Irish Miss. Much appreciated. I!m letting the big lug sleep on the bed with me tonight. Lol, he's happy!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Michele. All of you are helping so much, even though my stomach is in knots... As promised, I'll report back on Tuesday . . . gulp.
ReplyDeleteAriadneArts
ReplyDeleteI am wishing you and your dog well.
I made scalloped potatoes for dinner tonight . Yummy. In this case and many others I use the scrubbed potatoes, peel and all. It provides more fiber and doesn't changed the taste. Tonight I skipped the butter and sprinkled grated cheddar on top during the last 15 minutes of baking.
