Notes from C.C.:
1) Here is a pretty picture of Chickie's great-granddaughter Cecelia Rose (nicknamed Cece), who was born on Wednesday May 28, 2014. Cece lives in Tacoma, WA and she's the first great-grandchild for Chickie.
2) Happy birthday to dear Owen! When I talked with him last November, he mentioned he preferred to forget his birthday (not surprising after his poem on Sunday). He also said "... knowing how I tend to lose interests in things, I'll be mildly surprised if I'm still around then. But I get so much positive feedback from our supportive group that this might be an exception."
He's still here, entertaining us every morning with his wits, humor & hard work. Thank you, Owen! Now I don't feel a LAT crossword is complete until it's been Owenized.

Don't make a noise, a sound, a peep.
ReplyDeleteThe fairies in the garden are trying to sleep.
Enjoy the warmth of the rising sun,
The beauty of flowers, one by one.
Soon enough they'll awake to play and to leap!
Please be respectful when you hear a fella
Recite a poem a cappella.
It's not an audition
For competition;
And hecklers should all be consigned to Hella!
The local curmudgeon shouts, "get off my lawn!"
And, "Shut up with the noise! Go away! Begone!"
He's a grouchy old coot
And he's mean to boot,
He's disconsolate he wasn't Genghis Khan!
Verb is an action, and not a noun,
Or do we have that upside down?
Because VERBAL is
An adjective,
And a reverb is a noun when we hear one sound!
Morning, all (and Happy Birthday, Owen,)!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable puzzle today and mostly smooth sailing. Did not know ECKO, but the perps were solid. As usual, I needed the perps to decide between OBER and UBER, but once again the perps were solid. Didn't really care for AMER, but that was the only "less than stellar" fill in the whole grid.
Hello Puzzlers -
ReplyDeleteZoomed through, nary a speed bump in sight.
A low-key, almost inconsequential Happy Birthday to Owen! :-)
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteNever noticed AMER, so it didn't bother me a bit. I was slowed down by "Bygone Aesthetic." D'oh! There was an N in there.
Nope, never had wild boar, though we've got 'em "on the hoof" around here. They do an amazing job of aerating your lawn -- well, destroying it, actually.
Owen's third stanza today reminds me of the fella here who's got a "No Trespassing" sign at the end of his driveway. In smaller print he's added, "Private driveway. No turnarounds." As Norton used to say, "Sheesh, what a grouch!"
Good morning everyone!
ReplyDeleteHappy 3rd of June, Owen!! Loved your first poem today – so imaginative.
¸¸¸.•*¨*♫♥♫¸¸¸.•*¨*♫♥♫¸¸¸.•*¨*♫♥♫¸¸¸.•*¨*♫♥♫
And thanks for the sweet picture of CeCe, Chickie!! I wonder if she realizes that she is nicknamed for a famous crossword constructor?
Quite a few hesitations today, but a quick check of the crossing answers smoothed it all out:
SIDE A or side B?
ÜBER or ober?
MELBA or “you’re” (toast)?
YAP or yak?
I did like the fresh clue for ERs: “This can’t wait” hosp. areas. It really bugs me to see people going to the ER to be treated for things like an ingrown toenail or a sprained ankle.
I don’t know about your area, Argyle, but we have had the tomato plants in for two weeks. (But I still don’t have any tomatoes…)
Off to the races!
Good morning all. Happy Birthday Owen !
ReplyDeleteThank you Greg Johnson. I enjoyed your puzzle. Too much noise and lack of sleep can cause me a lot of STRESS and make me SEETHE.
Favorite clue was "Burn a lot... or slightly."
Never heard of CRIKEY.
No idea on ECKO, and almost forgot the K in ANKH.
Thank you Argyle. I agree about Ms. Vito.
Bard's instrument may be Lyre, but to copy from your post the last time we had a Greg Johnson puzzle, "Good excuse to post Steely Dan..." My Old School(5:47)
Have a great day all !
Have a fun day, Owen. I especially loved your first verse.
ReplyDeleteChickie, Ce Ce is adorable.
Straight forward puzzle today, easier than a Monday puzzle.
The Aussie Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, used to say CRIKEY. Hahtoolah, have you ever met him or been to his zoo?
Alas, I nodded off 2 minutes before Jeopardy last night and woke up 2 minutes into the next program. Drat!
I see in the news that "Who is John Irving" stumped her. I wouldn't have known that, but I did thoroughly enjoy Cider House Rules as a novel and a movie. IMO this was a more difficult clue than H&R Block which stumped Ken Jennings.
Good morning everybody.
ReplyDeleteAll the sleep references in todays puzzle are making me sleepy!
I had ORALLY instead of VERBAL for 51D: Spoken. Other than than all was well.
I liked the clue for 20A: Half of a 45: SIDE A.
It's always nice to see what some of my fellow solvers look like. Thanks for the picture OWEN - and happy birthday to you.
Thanks, Argyle, for your write-up about this puzzle.
ReplyDeleteI found today's puzzler easier than yesterday's and sped right through it. I did read the down clues as I filled in the across ones.
Hey! I got the theme too. That's two days in a row.
Thanks for sharing the picture of Cecelia, Chickie.
Happy Birthday, Owen.
Off to Idaho today,
Montana
Good morning, everyone!
ReplyDeleteAnother easy puzzle, just right for a Tuesday. I got the reveal, but didn’t need it. And the perps solved the ones I didn’t know.
I had LPNS before DOCS, LIST before CART, and CRIPES before CRIKEY, but the perps fixed them. Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, often said CRIKEY!
I never saw YAP or ERS. The perps filled them in.
I didn’t know ECKO, and couldn’t figure out ENTRAP, but perped them again.
Happy Day, OwenKL! I hope you enjoy it! And MANY more!
Musings
ReplyDelete-Argyle’s summation works for me
-Chickie, DON’T WAKE THE BABY just to play with it! Congrats!
-My iPhone with its level, flashlight, GPS, golf yardage app, ad infinitum is my new Swiss Army Knife
-Sir Edmund might be irritated to know his name is so mispronounced because of this guy
-It was hard to tell which was SIDE A on an Elvis or Beatle 45
-After the sermon, “It’s about time” is more common than AMEN
-Hasn’t every comedian done a “What’s the deal with shopping CARTS” bit?
-Is an eatery where “pigs in a blanket” become “saucisson en croute”?
-Did we ever settle whether refried beans were VERY well-fried or twice fried?
-IDAHO followed by IDO, hmmm…
-Marc (AKA Marc Milekofsky) ECKO’s clothing is very familiar in schools today
-Cool Hand Luke kept getting up and wouldn’t take a TKO from Dragline
-Marissa bared it all at age 44 in The Wrestler
-John Jacob Astor started his fortune with PELTS
-Owen, Happy…, Congratulations on…, Many happy…, ah, Have a great day our poet laureate!
-In what Neil Simon movie did Marsha Mason take a job in a CAR SHOW?
Owen, I won't mention the dreaded B word, but I do hope you have a happy day. But then I hope every day is happy for you because you bring us so much happiness with your poems!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, folks. Thank you, Greg Johnson, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteHad to wait for UZIS to get USES in the NW corner. Good start and off I went.
Got the unifier in the center after getting down that far, SHH. That helped with the theme answers.
One of our dogs was named OTTO, a German Shepherd. He was a stray we picked up in California. Brought him to Illinois.
ETHER reminds me of a anesthesiologist I used to pay while working at a medical charity. The name of his business was The Ether Bunny.
CRIKEY was new to me. I got it with perps, but still felt it might have been wrong. It was not. Is that pronounced with a long "I" or a short "I" ?
Nice baby picture Chickie. Congratulations.
Happy Birthday Brother Owen KL, and many more. Enjoy your verses.
Nice weather today. Will work in my garden. Leaving this weekend for a month. Hope my daughter will tend the garden for me. (Ha Ha)
See you tomorrow.

Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteWhat Barry said. Didn't know ECKO either but finally the IDEA light went off in my head and, voilà, it was done. No strikethroughs, no searches, no nits. Didn't care for AMER either but don't consider it a nit.
Happy birthday, Owen. Enjoy your poems. Keep 'em coming.
Bill G and others. Missed Jeopardy last night because of Bridge night. I liked Julia Collins a lot. She seemed like a classy lady; modest and comfortable in her own skin. Sic transit gloria.
Abejo: It's sort of a long "i" sounds like "cry key" in an Australian accent.
ReplyDeleteNice speed run today.
HG asked,Is an eatery where “pigs in a blanket” become “saucisson en croute”? To me an EATERY is kind of déclassé.
ReplyDeleteMerriam Webster:
"eat·ery, a usually small and informal restaurant,a luncheonette."
Déclassé or not, our family enjoys pigs in a blanket using crescent rolls and served with an assortment of mustards. We think bun length hot dogs cut into smaller pieces are tastier than cocktail franks for this.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteThis was an easy, enjoyable Tuesday offering from Mr. Johnson. Had no problems at all, but after my 5 1/2 hours in the ER recently, my clue for 31D would not be "This can't wait" hosp area. Thanks for the expo, Argyle.
Best wishes to you, Owen, for a very Happy Birthday and a big thank you for brightening our days with your poetic pleasantries.
Chickie, CeCe is darling. Congratulations.
Have a great day.
Greetings from Aberdeen:
ReplyDeleteCRIKEY, that was a fun puzzle. Thanks Greg! Thanks Argyle for the writeup.
And Happy Day Owen. VERBAL was my fav poem today.
Only write-over was starting saLAd spi(nner) at 10d. Oops.
It's time for another pub-crawl. SHH - DONT tell the boss our SECRET creative process.
Cheers, -T
Delightful Tuesday speed run with two impressive grid-spanners--many thanks, Greg. Only a few erasures in the middle bottom, but it all worked out. Lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteJames Joyce has one of the Dedalus girls in his 1922 "Ulysses" say CRIKEY. So the expression must be common in Ireland too?
Speaking of Ireland, that was a thrilling "Jeopardy" last night. I liked Julia Collins too, but it was hard not to be excited about the moment when someone else would take over. And it turned out to be the Irish dude!
Happy Birthday, Owen, our Corner Poet Laureate!
And what an adorable CeCe! I love newborns!
Have a great day, everybody!
Greetings!
ReplyDeleteThanks for NEATO puzzle, Greg! Thanks also to Santa! Great theme!
Longer than usual for me today. Brain power on dim after not much sleep. ECKO was perped.
Felicitations to our limerick man!
Congratulations to Chickie!
Almost wept for Julia Collins. A really arcane question.
Cheers!
Hi Y'all! Great fast puzzle, Greg! Great expo, Argyle!
ReplyDeleteOwen, Happy 1st day of the rest of your life. May you rhyme many more!
I've never eaten wild boar. Think I dated a couple.
Hi Y'all! Great fast puzzle, Greg! Great expo, Argyle!
ReplyDeleteOwen, Happy 1st day of the rest of your life. May you rhyme many more!
I've never eaten wild boar. Think I dated a couple.
Captcha had only a picture with 102 on it. I typed in 102 and got a red notice that it wasn't right and my post was still in the box, but obviously it printed. When I typed another string of numbers the post left the box, so now I'm printed twice. Oh well, I guess HBD to Owen bears repeating.
ReplyDeleteNice and easy !
ReplyDeleteMinor nit , you can OWE and not be DUE to remit , just sayin ..!
@PK - "... Think I dated a couple".
ReplyDeleteCoffee through the nose snort. Thanks! :)
Keep 'em coming, Owen.
Thanks for the expo, Argyle.
Happy Birthday OwenKL ... that deserves "a toast" with something that isn't MELBA.
ReplyDeleteHusker: WAG ... The Goodbye Girl
I sometime enjoy a ZEST of lemon with my scotch.
Cheers!!!
Good afternoon all,
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Owen! I look forward each day to your poetry, and rarely have time to say thanks to all who make this fun. By the time I get in a writing mode, you are all long gone.
Tomorrow Great Grandma Chickie, Garlic Gal and I are making our yearly trek to see Dodo and Lucina.Dodo has had computer problems this past year, so we don't hear from her as often as we'd like. So we are looking forward to this little reunion , and, as always, we will remember our friend, Clear Eyes.
Loved today's CW because It easily filled for me.When I filled "Don't wake up the baby"' I ended up changing cripes to crikey, and filling UAE. I had twine for nylon...should have checked the perps 1st.
Have a lovely day.
OWEN, Keep up the rhyming; I like your timing!
ReplyDeleteBTW, HBD also!
Hola Everyone, I just finished the puzzle while having our car serviced, so am a bit late in getting to the blog. First, Happy Birthday, Owen, and many, many more.
ReplyDeleteThe puzzle came together fairly easily with just one glitch Side A crossed ESTD. I had put in ESTB and couldn't for the life of me figure out Sibea for half of a 45. I was thinking Gun, not record. After putting the puzzle down and coming back to it a few minutes later I had to smack myself on the forehead. Side A was so obvious I wondered how I could have made such a silly mistake.
Husker, A very timely comment about Don't wake the Baby. I'll remember that and just play with Cecilia when we get to see her for the first time.
Have a great day, everyone. We're off to see our youngest granddaughter graduate from 8th grade, so I'll be gone for several days to visit another branch of the family.
Have a great day, everyone.
Crazy day not much sleep, but had to be here to give Owen, the most tireless worker I know a shout out for a good year. I am impressed we have not bored you yet.
ReplyDeletePK, your line is so poignant on so many levels
It has only been nine months.
ReplyDelete-I am just off the course and there are 110+mph winds just one county over with 3” hail but nothing here, yet. Yikes. A lot of storms are lining up to our west and it could be a “bumpy night”
ReplyDelete-Yes, Tin, that was Goodbye Girl, with Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. I had a question last week about what Neil Simon play had Muriel Tate drinking stingers while the Walter Matthau character was trying to jump her bones. That was Plaza Suite.
-YR, all right, maybe a bistro or La _____ would have a fancier appellation for pigs in a blanket
-Hail is now so thick 25 miles from here that people can’t get their doors open.
-Hope to blog later!
Spitz, I agree 100 percent about Julia. (I wonder if she does the LA Times crosswords?) The Irish guy might turn out to be a decent replacement; we'll see.
ReplyDeleteDid anybody see the park in Georgia with the beautiful dogwood trees in Sunday Morning's Moment of Nature? I love dogwood trees. Our 1.5-acre yard in Virginia was full of them.
I see where the Dodgers sophomore outfield is leading the All-Star voting. Yasiel Puig is a very talented athlete with the maturity of a high-school boy. Last year I would have said the maturity of a middle-school boy but he's improved a bit since then. He still wears one of those worthless plastic 'balance' bracelets so I have a feeling that he falls into the 'superstitious' category.
HG, Yes that works better.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of this afternoon and your chances with the hail when I heard the Nebraska weather report. Stay safe.
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteI actually finished yesterday and todays puzzles. That is rare for me.
Happy Birthday Owen, I also enjoy your poems.
Ether-yuk! Before I was 7 years old I had a couple surgeries where they gave me ether, it was awful. Thank goodness it is no longer used.
Have a good evening!
Marge
Hi. I'm new to this site and I've never posted before, but I wanted to wish Owen a very happy birthday, and to thank him for creating this wonderful blog. I found this site when I was looking for an explanation on one of the daily puzzles, and now I can't seem to go away.
ReplyDeleteI love reading all of your comments, so thank you Owen, for putting this blog together and keeping us all entertained with your limericks.
Please don't go away.
-Evelyn
Very nice, Evelyn, but I must inform you this is not the esteemed Mr. Owen's blog. If you will go back to the top of the blog and look to the right, you will get the full story.
ReplyDeleteAw, for one day, can't you let it be Owens Blog?
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm late, (I was on an errand of mercy that took all day.)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't going to do the puzzle today due to lack of time, but this AM, when I glanced at the late night comments, I could not help but notice that it was OwenKL's Birthday!
So I rushed thru it on the Mensa site, (Master level of course...) & was intrigued that on line solves can be as much fun as ink!
I usually reserve online puzzles for those dreaded red letter days, to my surprise this was fun, & refreshing!
Cecelia Rose, (I love how that rolls off your tongue!)
Anywho, I saved some cake links earlier, but can't decide. I really liked this one, but was not sure how to figure "21" into it...
But because Owen is so poetic, & since my prior to Owen poetic knowledge is relegated to the exploits of Barnacle Bill The Sailor... (Apologies to Yellowrocks, but Owen overwhelmed me with volume...) I believe OwenKL deserves a special cake...
Oh, I'm so sorry!
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you C.C. and the seven more contributors. So Mr. Owen is a contributor then? He is your poet laureate? How exciting this blog is!
Thank you!
-Evelyn
Oh, & of course, The Theme!
ReplyDeleteShh #1
Shh #2
Shh #3
&,, of course,,, Shh #4.
Evelyn, as you may have noticed there are 7 or 8 or 9 contributors - rather Blogs-in-Chief - and todays Blog-in-Chef (no typo - ) is Sir Argyle, Lt. Gen, DSO etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteC.C. is the founder and she blogs on the day of rest.
Owen is the Poet Laureate and resident Limerologist-in-chief.
C.E.D. is the Link CEO and COO of all birthdays. He also is a part time comedian... or, he thinks he is.
The rest of us (including you - ) are all chiefs of some kind - no indians here. We are all top notch people.
CED - Well done SIR, well done. AMEN on the cakes.
ReplyDeleteEvelyn - pick and avatar and (SHH) go blue. Do spend some time hanging about. While one could ARGUE the special-poet has a hold on the blog, C.C. started it, Argyle helps keeps it going (with JzB on Wed, Steve on Thurs, LEM on Fri, and Splynter on Sat). However, it's all the folks like... I'm not going to try to enumerate; I'd omit someone special.
I may have introduced a new IDEA to Aberdeen. We went to a Tapas restaurant (after 4 Scotch bars!) and I convinced my pals to just ask the wait-staff to just feed us nibbles until we said no more. My pals thought I was nuts, but she did just that and chose the tastiest things on the menu... we left quite satisfied. The tab was reasonable too!
Cheers, -T
Um, may one too many Scotch bars says...
ReplyDeleteIt's all the folks like ... [...] that make the blog worth visiting daily. Is what I meant to eventually type
Today, I'm obviously not one of them.
Thanks CED for the links, you got them out before I could compose a post about the cakes... IDO imbibe.
Cheers from Scotch-land! -T
If you go to the archives, you will see how important Dennis was(before he went south) to the blog. Now he is frolicking in Florida but we still look forward to his comments.
ReplyDeleteCan't tell if Evelyn is tongue-in-cheek or foot-in-mouth. Hilarious, either way.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day this has been.....is that because it is your ....em....un-birthday, Owen ??
ReplyDeleteHG, good luck with the weather. Hail like that could cause some real damage to your cars and your head.
ReplyDeleteI just got back from a short trip to the polling place. I voted though it was hard to make well-informed decision about the local races.
Evelyn, my favorite thing about this Blog is learning about things I was not aware of...
ReplyDeleteWe try to tie in links to the days crossword, but sometimes exuberance gets the best of us...
I.E.: stuff I was saving to match a Crossword...
fire in time lapse...
Place for the next Crossword Coven?
Or my favorite place to hug a rock: Preikestolen
AnonT: Boyo, you forgot our illustrious Hearti/Marti in your listing. For shame!
ReplyDeleteHusker & AvgJoe, I hope you have electricity and houses after the reports out of Nebraska. Stay safe!
After watching the news about the storms in NE and Iowa, I hope that Husker and Ave. Joe are safe and the storm hasn't impacted their areas. It looked like it was pretty widespread.
ReplyDeleteEvelyn (AKA Anonymous), Welcome to the blog. We have a great time every day. You might also meet some of these wonderful people face to face. Tomorrow the Calif. Coven as we're known will meet for lunch. There will be five of us and this is the fourth year in a row that we've had our reunion. Such fun.
I probably watch too much TV. I know I would watch less if it weren't for the invention of the DVR. I was watching America's Got Talent and enjoying it while I was noting the INCREDIBLE number of minutes of advertising I was skipping over.
ReplyDeleteLaugh-Laugh @ 7:33P:
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't surprise me in the least if Owen himself wrote those Evelyn comments.
It has to be said @12:44: I resent that. I did not write Evelyn's remarks! Actually, I've considered doing something mildly similar criticizing myself just to get a rise out of people, but the real ones that occasionally pop up are crazy enough I hardly need to!
ReplyDelete
