  1. Morning, all!

I'm not sure what SHOJI and STACY were doing in a Monday Puzzle (the former I struggled to remember and the latter was completely unknown to me), but the perps were solid (although I can imagine SEXTON giving some people a bit of trouble on a Monday as well).

And UM YES, I suppose BLUE RED is literally a "purplish" color, although I can't imagine anybody actually using it to describe something instead of just calling it purple.

The theme was very enjoyable and easy to get, but, UM YES, I believe it is YADA and not YADDA. Or, at least, it was originally. Now, who knows?

  2. Amazing all those Y' s, why not?
Whom I took some work, Oreg was a stretch and see I g Lemon to start the week, all good. Great write up as well. Thanks JW and Argyle

  3. Big Easy,
All I know about Howard Hughes is from the movie "Aviator".

    Blue Irish,
I'd love to have your Bird Seed Salad recipe. I've never put instant noodle in a salad before.

    Splynter,
No answer to PK's "On(e more week) ward" question last Saturday? I'm curious too.

  6. Good morning!

Hand up for YADA YADA YADA YAD (oops!). And SHOJI doesn't seem Monday-friendly, but the perps were easy.

Argyle, I thought you'd link this one for YAK YAK YAK (2:29).

  7. Hello Puzzlers -

This one was pretty much read and write, though I did have to wait for Shoji to perp in. Until Seinfeld came along, I had never heard Yadda Yadda Yadda, but now it's everywhere. I assume it's Yiddish. I hated the song Yummy Yummy Yummy as a kid, and let's just say it didn't improve with age.

  8. Good morning everybody.

Nice easy puzzle - perfect for a Monday morning.

The only word I didn't know was SHOJI. I thought BLUE RED was odd.

This puzzle made me a little hungry with such clues and answers as: PIE, JELLO, ICE, EAT, and beer KEG. Sounds like a party.

    Have a nice day.

  9. Paul, I assume that is muddled, according to their web site.

D-O, I thought about it but my pick was too far over the top to ignore.

  10. So... Anybody else think that "Toys bouncing on string" was an odd clue for YOYOS? I mean, they unwind and wind, but don't actually bounce, do they?

  11. Good morning all.

Thank you Jeffrey and thank you Argyle. Ford in ancient Rome ? No, I wouldn't.

On Saturday, Splynter linked a picture of the Revell KIT for the A4 Skyhawk.

SLUE and SLAKE are not words I know, and will never use, but they had to be.

I was listening to the oldies one night last week, and comparing the number of top 10s of Tommy James and Tommy Row. I went looking for YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY after mistakenly recalling that one of them had that song. They did not. It was the Ohio Express as Argyle posted. They had another song that got plenty of pop station air time. "Chewy Chewy."

Spelled EKCO EckO again. Led to a hunt.

    CSO to LEMONade !

  12. Good morning everyone.

    HBDY to Gloria.

What Barry said. On the YOYO'S, too. It was a little crunchy in spots, but I guess all the squares filled by easily sussable repeated syllables, made it a Monday level.
Only whiteout - Had spin before SLUE.
SHOJI was easily gotten from the perps.

    Have a good day.

  13. Hi Y'all! Very chuckle-worthy puzzle, Jeff, fun, but a bit repetitious. Oh well, that just sped up the process. Thanks, Argyle, your links were also fun!

D-O: That song is one I used to dance to as a teen. I almost leaped out of my chair and jitterbugged. Okay, I'm lying, but my spirit leaped around a bit.

MESSY twice in less than a week? Is that a shout-out to my housekeeping, I wonder. There are spies everywhere!

BLUE RED? Seriously? Only a couple of males would ever be this inaccurate about color, Jeff & Rich. Or is this another CWese we'll have to endure? RED was the last entry for me because I didn't believe that could be it.

HBD Gloria! Hope you two continue to make sweet music.

What a fun puzzle to start the week, and with a shout-out to LEMON, too. Loved your links, Argyle, especially "YAKety Sax." André Rieu is such a great entertainer, and he always gets the audience going.

I hesitated to put in BLUE RED for 'purplish color," but it fit, and it is, so I just moved on.

I have SHŌJI screens in my third floor "Oriental Suite." I also have tatami mats, so I never have a problem with either of those cross-words.

"YADA, YADA, YADA" gets about 450,000 hits on Google. But "YADDA, YADDA, YADDA" gets almost twice as many. I don't think I have ever used it in writing, but I would probably use the double-D version.

    Have a great week, everyone!

  17. Good Morning:

Happy Birthday to Gloria; hope you have a wonderful day.

Overall, I enjoyed the puzzle and much of the fill. Wasn't too keen on Oreg. Blue red or um yes, but liked seeing Edam and Adam and yay and yap. I have always seen yada, yada, yada, but who knows? Also, Dyan Cannon's biggest claim to fame was being Mrs. Cary Grant, and being the mother of his first and only child.

So, thanks, Jeffrey, for a fun start to the week and thanks, Argyle, for an equally fun expo. BTW, does your Fair start this week? Nice CSO to Lemon.

PK, how is your brother progressing? YR, is Alan holding his own? I know he's having an MRA, I think you said on Aug. 11th

    Have a great day.

  19. Hello, puzzlers all!

This was finished before I poured my first cup of coffee. May I repeat that? This . . .

As soon as the YOU and YADDA lines were in place, I slid down and finished the rest. Very quickly and before I realized it, the whole grid was done. There was a hesitation at SHOJI but the perps were fast. Same with STACY.

I guess an artist mixing colors would combine BLUERED.

Thought cross to bear, ONUS, was clever and different.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Jazzbumpa, Gloria! You two always seem to be in harmony.

Have a joy, joy, joyful Monday, everyone!

  20. Good morning all,

Loved the links and write up, Argyle. Loved the the theme, and the perps that helped fill shoji, slue, slake and sexton...and DIY,OTB,,NSA. Never have liked abbreviations. As a teacher we only used PTA, NEA,and EDU.Never saw ELHI before a Xword.

Hope you all have a wonderful week.

  21. What a fun Monday puzzle--many thanks, Jeff. I too was surprised to see a Monday from you and not at all surprised that it wasn't a speed run. But what fun with all those triplets! And great pics in your expo, Argyle--many thanks to you too!

No problem with BLUE RED for me since I expected worse. Didn't know SHOJI either, but I figured it would fill in and it did.

    Happy birthday, Gloria!

    Have a great week, everybody!

  23. I enjoyed the puzzle as expected though parts of it were laced with Thursdayish clues. More inconsistent than usual for Rich I thought.

    Happy birthday Gloria!

I am used to seeing Dyan Cannon in her usual corner spot when the Lakers are on television. I've never seen Oregon abbreviated as OREG but if that's what it took to complete the grid, OK.

I was certainly expecting the wood in an archer's bow to be a type of wood such as yew. BENT was clever and tricky. BLUE RED seemed odd to me too. Bluish-red, OK.

Jordan is spending the day. Maybe we can mostly finish "Flowers for Algernon."

  24. Happy Birthday, Gloria!

Argyle: Nice write-up & links. Esp. the YADDA, YADDA, YADDA ...
(I'm really tired today ... lol!)

Faves today were SHOJI & STACY since they got a certain person's "panties-in-a-wad" ...
Perfectly easy Monday clues/answers solved by perps even if you didn't know them.

My "Personal Favorite" (of course!) was KEG ... especially if that Bar barrel is filled with Scotch.

A bit Hot & Humid here today ... that ICEE sounds like a nice refreshment (with some Rum!).
    Cheers!!!

  26. Today's limerick:

Jeffrey Wechsler's a pretty "wise guy",
    As he showed us on this crossword try;
    See, his puzzle, I say,
    Was not "normal" Monday;
With its who's, and its whats, and its "Y's"!!

Not a lot to add . . . thought it not the usual Monday, "hit the stopwatch" and "Usain Bolt" my way through. But I liked the challenge. SHOJI/SLAKE were the last to fill (perps and a WAG).

Back in high school (mid-'60's) I took German as a language elective. Still speak a few words today but not very well. One of the ways our German teacher got us to learn was through song. This German version of the Ames Brothers hit is here and the lyrics begin at 0:35. Du Du Du = You You You, auf Deutsch.

Have a great Monday, all. Today they start aerating our golf course - will be closed for next 10 days . . .

I got back from NOLA last night and my brain was still on vacation. Fun trip - we stayed in the French Quarter and Bloody Marys greeted us out of the hotel. So, it took a while to get puzzling through the SE.

Thanks JW for the Y-laden puzzle and Argyle for the write-up. I've never YADDA-YADDA'd over the lobster bisque nor nookie!

Write-overs - UhYES, ulEE before AGEE (staple, I know), COop before COTE, and, hand up for Spin before SpUn before SLUE.

I can't think of another puzzle we've had with so many Y's in the answers. It must have been hard to come up with the words to cross with all those Y letters.

  53. Irish, I should have suspected something when we were issued an actual key for our room at Jots and not a card to swipe. There also was no elevator or air conditioning and it appeared the room had been updated 40 years ago. Woodwork was beaten up, sliding doors took a lot of effort to move, carpets were stained, the room was musty and various bugs had taken up residence. Yikes!
However, Jots is right next to the Rogue River boats and so that expedited access to them. Dave’s video was very familiar except our boat was covered and so when they “spun a cookie” we stayed dry. We also saw a bear on shore like the video but only one cub. It was 62F when we left Gold Beach, OR but 32 miles upstream in Agness, OR Camp it was 93F. Leaving the Pacific Coast causes temps to rise quickly. The Rogue River boats also carry mail from Gold Beach up to Agness Camp and are one of only two mail boats left in America.

  57. During 4 years of college at the U. of OREG, I quickly grew to love the Oregon coast. My very favorite place is Heceta Head and Devil's Churn. I'd like living in the town of Florence, I think.

  58. Re: OREG

In Corvallis they call them the Beavers
In Eugene they are known as the Ducks
But to fans of these Universities
    Each of them equally sucks!

I seriously doubt you would ever find a U of Oregon fan rooting for Oregon State, or vice versa. Don't they still refer to their annual football game as "The Civil War"??!

BTW, the Oregon coast is indeed spectacular. Was there in 2005 for of all things a golfing trip. Played several courses in and around Portland as well as traveling to Bandon to play Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails. Our trip to Bandon from Portland followed the coast. To any golfer, a trip there is essential . . .

  59. HG @5:44 - Well, I guess one bad experience was more than compensated for by the quality of your other accommodations. Sometimes, tour packages are not noted for high-level lodging or meals.

  60. Good evening, folks. Thank you, Jeff Weschler, for a fine puzzle. Thank you Argyle, for a fine review.

I just finished the puzzle. Tried on cruciverb this morning and no cigar. This evening tried to print it from the Trib sire. No cigar. So, I worked it from the Trib site.

Good puzzle. Interesting theme. Yak Yak Yak, etc.

Most of the regular fill was doable, bei g a Monday.

I will not go on and on since no one will probably read this, since it is so late.

Hopefully I can get tomorrow's puzzle from cruciverb.

    See you then.

  65. Blue Iris,
Sorry for misspelling your name yesterday.

Thanks for the recipe. I'm going to make the salad for lunch. I have all the ingredients in hand except the sunflower seeds.

  66. Abejo, I read your post. Woke up ill, so worked Tuesday's puzzle. Cruciverb is working now. I was able to print Monday's puzzle from my state newspaper.

  67. What Montana said. Cruciverb had been missing the Monday puzzle when it was due, but eventually it got back in sync. The Tuesday file was available at the accustomed time.
