Cawford was a CRIME LORD, BRAIN of many a heist.
ReplyDeleteCops would never charge him, the MAFIA didn't look twice.
He was an INVETERATE thief,
He even taunted police!
He DOTED on his shiny hoard, the master crow of vice!
To blast off in a rocket takes NERVES of ice and steel.
To leave our planetary womb, in orbit then to reel!
No pull of gravity remains,
It boggles many human BRAINS,
The first reaction to zero-G often is, "OH, GEE! I feel..."

Hey C.C.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the reverse progression of the cord cutting. Nicely done.
Great pic mb!
A classic C.C. creation with the hidden/broken word in progression as pointed out by Anon 3:50. The WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE was an interesting movie I watched and mentioned here earlier this year. Money does strange things to people.
ReplyDeletemb thank you as I now know much more about dung beetles than I imagined possible- 6,000 different species! Also a wonderful picture of that jewel. birthday panCAKE- awesome!
Off to solve the Jimmy B.
The Jimmy B./C.C. puzzle was fun and not easy. I do not want to give it away but it was uplifting.
ReplyDeleteMaybe at the end of the day, we can discuss. Congratulations Jimmy B.
Good morning folks.
ReplyDeleteI perked up when I saw a CW from C.C.. Thank you for my good fun. I FIR in 21:46 min.
Thank you melissa bee for your excellent review.
Ðave
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteZip, Zip, Done. D-o did not get the theme, and once again failed to read the full reveal clue. D'oh! Nicely done, C.C. and Melissa (very cute grand).
BATIK: That image you posted, Melissa, looks suspiciously like a color-blindness panel. Was there a number in it?
FIRE SEASON: It seems that we're fast approaching a 12-month fire season in the far west. Scary.
Dave 2, congratulations. That was a very reasonable time and an indication that you are getting better as well as having fun.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, C.C. and friends. Quick and easy Wednesday puzzle.
ReplyDeleteHow appropriate to see FIRE SEASON now that California is experience such devastation this year.
I learned about the ELOI from the crosswords. I have never read The Time Machine and probably never will.
RENO is also the home of the National Judicial College. I took some courses there about 20 years ago.
My favorite clue was Where Bats Hang Out = DUGOUTS.
QOD: If you don’t like what you’re doing, then don’t do it. ~ Ray Bradbury (Aug. 22, 1920 ~ June 5, 2012)
FIR, but erased neRd for DORK. But I've learned to wait for STa/n and e/iOS, then also waited on OLSe/oN. Didn't know "Silicon Valley", batik and only sorta knew RHEA. "Silicone Valley" would be Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteLike Hahalso, my favorite was the bat hangout. Had to be a CC puzzle. This was a great Wednesday puzzle. It seemed difficult at first, then it turned out to be doable - even by me.
And thanks to melissa bee for the fun write-up. Darling grand. Mine starts college next month and is still darling.
Good morning, folks. Thanks you, C.C., for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Melissa Bee, for a fine review.
ReplyDeleteThis puzzle worked out well. Great theme. Did not catch it until I was done.
I also liked DUGOUTS for 42D. Very misleading.
Liked the long verticals.
Unknowns: ELSA, MISO, and CREOLE.
Well, I have to fo guard the crossing. Yesterday 74 kids in 1/2 hour.
See yountomorrow.

Prematurely put in ISm for IST in 25A, nearly a Natick of OLSoN but OOS didn't sound right. Also 31A station is often abbreviated as STa not STN
ReplyDeleteListened to Firesign Theater too often in my ute, every time I hear Irving Berlin's patriotic song I think of "God Bless Vespucciland"
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteThis was a mid-week treat from our own CC. Yay! My only unknown was EOS and my only w/o was Ism instead of Ist. Another CSO to dear Argyle and Dennis at USMC. (My brother, Jack, too) I saw the Cord-splitting early on, but the reveal was still a nice surprise.
Thanks, CC, for an enjoyable solve and thanks, Melissa, for the fun tour and and a special thanks for sharing Jaelyn's birthday picture. She is just a darling child; I can't believe she is two already!
Congratulations to JimmyB. Nice picture, CC.
FLN
OMK, your home sounds like an oasis of comfort, warmth and serenity.
Misty, I'm sorry to hear that you're still coping with your eye problems. Have you ever gotten a second opinion? I hope you get back to normal soon.
Have a great day.
Good morning. Thank you C.C. and thank you Melissa. Cute litle girl. Bet she's a joy.
ReplyDeleteYes, a very quick solve.
EOS made me change Jimmy's last name to OLSEN from OLSoN. Never heard of batik.
Had a teacher in HS that had a COOP BOARD of sorts. It had holes in it to reduce wind resistance.
Nice puzzle, with the potential for some previously unknowns. 11:16 for me today but not that easy. Enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteCutting the cord to cable TV is something more doable than ever, with the advent of internet streaming, etc. I got a Channel Master DVR, then a couple more, along with a Sling subscription three years ago. And there's a website, tvfool.com, which will tell you if high-quality, over-the-air HD programs are feasible, which in my case, they are.
Anyway, most of you already know this, I'm sure. Happy Humpday.
Sounds interesting. Who or what is the ISP?
Delete47A: My last film camera was a Canon A1; early 1980’s. Terrific camera. Then came the autofocus age. Then the digital cameras. Now everybody seems to use their phones. Except for pros, that is.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the EOS, the acronym makes sense: elect-optical system. I thought it was named after the Greek goddess of the dawn - EOS.
Hi Y'all! Thanks for a fun puzzle, C.C.! Thanks, Melissa, cute granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteI got the theme okay. My kids have really been CUTTING THE CORD. I've rarely seen them lately.
Last to fill was the mid-west section of ANCIENT/CRIME/MALT crosses.
Tried AMERIcus before AMERIGO.
No real unknowns except "What'sApp". I WAGd IM___ but resisted ING for a while because it didn't sound like a word to me.
Hahtoolah: The Quote of the Day: "If you don't like what you're doing then don't do it." Sounds like a plan but isn't really something workable. Dishes pile up and dust makes me sneeze. LOL!
Congratulations, Jimmy B. I did the Puzzle Society Crossword which I would have enjoyed but the NE corner had no numbers for squares 8 & 9 and wouldn't let me put a "W" or "A" in those squares or an "R" at the end or an "N" in NICE. Why?
We've thought seriously about CORD-CUTTING from DirecTV. Hulu offers a moderately priced streaming service complete with local channels and DVR. That sounded interesting, but Hulu (so far as I can tell) doesn't carry PBS. We watch many PBS shows, and missing that would be a deal breaker.
ReplyDeleteFun speed run today! Thanks C.C. and mb.
ReplyDeleteI misread “subway shops” and couldn’t imagine what that meant. Subway sandwichs didnt fit. Then perps gave me STN and I felt silly.
Unfortunately, Coastal hurricane threat was a gimme. Loved DUGOUTS.
Happy hump day everybody!
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteI feel remiss. I did not realize it was a C.C. puzzle until just checking in here.
No problems with the solve. Six squares wite-out needed because I had a brain fart and entered A tunes instead of ITUNES. After the I correction, I GET IT and SIFT were gotten easily. Cool theme.
Have a great day.
Musings
ReplyDelete-A lovely C.C. effort as always with a progressive theme
-Every time I use an ATM, I remember writing a $5 check for a night out
-Addison STA. is a very famous baseball stop
-Hmmm... What’s in a PALEO diet?
-BEETS? Yes for me, no for my DW
-TERI’s most famous line – “They’re real and they’re spectacular” and she was Jimmy Olsen’s and Superman’s friend on this series
-What woman of song is “Down by the seaside SIFTING sand”?
-These shoes of my ute are now RETRO favorites but mainly for girls
-Want to gross yourself out today? Google “Scarab scene from Mummy” Yikes!
-INVETERATE always seems to precede the word “liar”
-This ran for a year-and-a-half on NBC
-DUGOUTS were put below ground to offer fans an unobstructed view of the game.
-Lovely write-up and picture, MB!
Good Morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks, C.C.! My hand is also up for Bats hanging out in the DUG OUT. Since caves wouldn't do in this creation, I moved right to baseball bats. The long fill really helped me out here giving me a little speed. The theme was fun. I saw all the C's and D's as I was working, but it did me no good. I needed Melissa's help.
Thanks for that MB. AND for lots of visually interesting links. Nice. For fast cash, I always want "scam" before I get the V-8 can at ATMS.
FLN: Thanks, Picard, for the solid advice for protecting posts from disappearing into the ether.
Anon-T: I knew the cases of oleo margarine were going to Wisconsin because it used to be illegal in America's Dairy State--only real butter for Badgers.
Have a sunny day, all.
Owen, I loved the CRIME LORD! And the ZERO-G made me laugh so I guess that’s okay.
ReplyDeleteGary, the woman would be Ginger - NO WAIT! Mary Ann!
ReplyDeleteTeri Hatcher, a local girl who has made good in the other Hollywood. If they are real they are admirable.
ReplyDeleteNice puzzle. Seemed like a Monday puzzle to me.
ReplyDeleteCUTTING THE CORD was my very first fill. But I did not actually get the theme answers until I finished the entire puzzle. Fun theme and puzzle, CC!
ReplyDeleteCORPORATE GREED was the reason for my CUTTING THE CORD. This was the first place I ever lived that required a CORD to get most TV channels. When I grudgingly signed up with Cox Cable in the 80s I paid about $5/month. It rose to about $70/month for approximately the same service in recent years. An increase of 1400%. That is an average increase of 40% per year.
Can you spell MONOPOLY? What do I think of a free market economy? I think it would be a good idea.
The past few weeks have brought us a wonderful EGRET gathering!
This is at the state wildlife reserve a ten minute bicycle ride away. Such a delight!
Melissa Bee: Thanks for the Winchester Mystery House photo. I have a bunch of photos from touring there. Yes, wealth can make people crazy. In her case, it was due to guilt over where the wealth came from. She was tormented by the souls of those killed by Winchester guns.
We have this local Winchester connection.
This beautiful land is on Winchester family property near Santa Barbara. We are fortunate that it is open to the public. Right next to the Winchester Gun Club.
billocohoes.....”Antelope Freeway 1/256th of a mile....”.
ReplyDeleteThis was yet another go through for me....something of a streak....only mark over was 31A STAS b4 STNS and that was it.
And another theme that doesn’t give anything away, nice.
Well, I love C.C. puzzles and was hoping I would ace this one. But had some problems in the middle and had to cheat a little, but still great fun--many thanks, C.C. I got the whole top so quickly, including CORPORATE GREED, before I got any of the other themes. Very exciting. GO PALEO was unfamiliar to me and I kept reading COOP BOARD, which made no sense to me, until I realized it was CO-OP (I haven't lived in an apartment for years, thank goodness). But lots of fun, and lovely pictures, Melissa. Wonderful to see that birthday picture of sweet Jaelyn.
ReplyDeleteJinx, I too thought NERD before DORK.
Thank you for asking, Irish Miss, my eyes are better on some days than others. I'll wait until my eye doctor appointment at the end of next week before deciding anything. My eye doctors have been belonged to University of California for the last thirty years, so I'm reluctant to change.
Have a great Wednesday, everybody!
No one has actually said it: 42d is C.C.'s baseball clue of the day.
ReplyDeletehi all,
ReplyDeletelooks like most everyone aced today's puzzle, always funner when it's from cc. thanks for the nice comments about the birthday picture - she is a continual source of adorableness.
i agree with many comments about cutting cable - so many options now. i notice that each service leaves just enough gaps that you need at least two. best thing about streaming is eliminating the piles of tapes and DVDs. however ... the continual upgrades to media force consumers to buy the same thing in multiple formats - how many of us have purchased a favorite album in vinyl, 8-track, cassette, cd, and finally (hopefully) electronically. same with movies. how many times do we have to buy the same thing?
THANKS, C.C, & Melissa B ~
ReplyDeletefor a happy start to hump day.
That is the nicest picture of a dung beetle (SCARAB) I have ever seen.
It's a wonder what makeup can do!
Ta- DA!
Misty ~
Glad to know your eyes have some up days. I hope the ratio of "better" to "worse" keeps improving for you.
I am just finishing a round of physical therapy that was my last recourse - after months of diet changes and trying medications - for relieving a certain painful condition. I didn't have much faith going into the PT, but to my surprise it has worked!
(I don't know why I'm bringing this up; I can't imagine PT would be of much help for your eyes...)

Thanks, Lemon and others for your kind words. As you might expect, C.C. is the consummate mentor, with endless patience and so generous with her time and encouragement. She did the heavy lifting on our puzzle; I am just grateful to have been along for the ride. We are all blessed to have her leadership.
ReplyDeleteWanted CONDO BOARD, but not enough spaces. Do chickens have a COOP BOARD?
ReplyDeleteELSA/ILSA; OLAF/OLAV; never know which is which; usually WAG wrong.

-From what a former co-worker consumed, the PALEO DIET is green slime.
-All day, all night, Marianne...
Thank you, Ol'Man Keith. Your PT story is actually encouraging because it suggests there may always be some hope and some possible help down the line. The good thing about my eyes is that thanks to my cataract surgery my vision remains excellent, and they don't hurt but just feel a little uncomfortable on some days. But I'll keep my hopes up.
ReplyDeleteMarianne
ReplyDeleteI liked this puzzle and found it to be easier than yesterday's and Monday's, so easy in fact that I didn't even see some of the clues and answers until reading melissa's review. I also loved the clue for DUGOUTS.
ReplyDelete"Vespucciland". Good one!
Good wishes to you all.
Wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for the fun C.C. and melissa bee (sweet granddaughter).
ReplyDeleteI finished but forgot to go back and look for the theme. Impressive progression of CORD CUTTING.
My newspaper still does not acknowledge the constructor and I did not know it was a C.C. CW until I got here. I'll make that my excuse for not understanding that BAT was C.C.'s baseball clue. Lightbulb moment re DUGOUTS.
This Canadian always has to change ABMS to ATMS.
Hand up for STAS before STNS, and Nerd before DORK.
My DC insider was a SEN before a POL.
The entire province of British Columbia is in a state of emergency this FIRE SEASON. The smoke is causing breathing issues, flight cancellations into adjoining provinces. I believe Montana has some severe fires also. Montana has not reported in here lately.
MISO for YR, CREOLE for our Louisiana contingent, MALTIER ALE for Tin, (MAFIA for AnonT?), POSTS for all of us INVETERATE bloggers.
Enjoy the rest of the day.
I'm home. We just returned from wild, wonderful WV, almost heaven. We were joined by my sister from PA and my sister from IL. Great family time. We rented a housekeeping cottage in Watoga State Park where we had most lunches and dinners on our great porch next to a babbling stream. Having three cooks and three dishwashers we shared the chores and no one was overworked. We visited Pearl Buck's birthplace where a wonderful docent kept us enthralled for two hours because we were the only visitors at that time. We visited Bear Town State Park where many huge boulders were scattered in cave-like formations. There was a boardwalk to direct our attention and to keep us on the straight and narrow to preserve the habitat. Interesting geology, even on my fourth visit there. We had only one rainy day. The delightful daytime temp of 70 was fine for sightseeing and relaxing, but precluded swimming in the brand new pool.
ReplyDeleteI missed you Cornerites.
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteThanks C.C. for two more fun puzzles this week! I nailed the LAT w/ only 1 WO and got in a JAM in the NE on the other. //hint: not wafle [sic]
Thanks mb for the fine review and link to Saks' history. Wasn't Gimbel's [in the article] one of the competing stores in Miracle on 34th St? // Yep, I just look'd it up.
WO: ENS b/f CPO perp'd out.

Fav: Well, actually, I'm not sure how I feel about AMERIGO xing MAFIA :-)
LAIC - A word I've not noticed before and needed twice today.
{A, B+}
D-O: Have you tried an HD antenna for PBS? I get four or five PBSs over the air. I still haven't cord-cut because, w/o cable/DirectTV, you can't get C-SPAN. And we all know C-SPAN is perfect for napping while congress-critters droll.
Misty - good to hear there are better days w/rt your eyes.
JimmyB - you're in good hands w/ C.C. She brought 3 of my puzzle-ideas to print and now has CUT THE CORD for my own good/to learn how to grid. Note: I got nut'in' yet :-)
Cheers, -T
*really Anon today; I've been playing with the Yubikey and MFA (multi-factor authentication) and messed up my gAccount as far as my iPad is concerned #sigh
CC, fun puzzle. Mb, interesting blog and lovely pic of cute Jaelyn.
ReplyDeleteMb, I, too, have bought many upgrades of the same music.
Misty, I am sorry your eyes are still a problem.
OMK, I am glad PT worked for you. I am amazed how many problems it can solve. My PT has resolved many of my recent aches and pains.
Alan was the best I have seen in a long time on this vacation. I hope it lasts.
Now I realize how much I love daytime driving. It was fun listening to CD's and viewing the lovely mountain scenery on the 440 mile trip. I must drive more because my driving days will soon be over.
Today's puzzle was delightful, but Monday-easy.
Grainy lager set my teeth on edge. Undissolved sugar in a drink is grainy. Particles in my lager? Ugh! Then I realized the clue meant made of grain, malt.
Back in the old groove already, doing 11 day's worth of laundry, buying groceries, getting haircuts for Alan and myself, taking Alan to a doctor's checkup and catching up with emails and voicemails. I am looking forward to square dancing tonight, where I will see many of my friends.
Picard, you can add "government interference" to "corporate greed". The FCC has "must carry" rules that drive up the costs to content providers like cable and satellite. Also there are often taxes that are hidden, in addition to the overt ones. I worked in the GTE Wireless IT department when Al Gore shepherded through the library tax on cell service. We added it to customer bills as such, and the response from the feds was immediate: we were not allowed to explicitly show that tax. We had a crash update to our billing software and hid the tax elsewhere. Of course companies don't pay taxes, they only collect them and remit them to the government. Only customers (and to a minor degree, owners/shareholders) pay taxes.
ReplyDeleteThere is plenty to dislike about the cable and satellite companies, but I think that pricing ranks well down on the list. I certainly wouldn't have it if I didn't camp in the boonies so often. It is nice to push a button and let the dish reconnect us to the world. I'm really excited to see what 5G networks bring. Plenty of bandwidth for HDTV, but who knows what the pricing will be.
C, Eh! - your fault . You reminded me of Knopfler singing He played CREOLE... -T
ReplyDeleteAnon-T, why are you now "Anonymous?" Yes, I've got an antenna and can get Channel 8. Problem is that if we were to go with Hulu, we wouldn't be able to record Channel 8. We watch almost nothing live, except for news. Everything else is time-shifted.
ReplyDeleteI better post, I'm running out of juice

ReplyDeleteThank you, Anonymous and Yellowrocks. Wonderful that you and Alan had such a great vacation with family, YR. And enjoy your square dancing tonight!
ReplyDeleteSo Jimmy did you bring the theme to C.C.? Why don't you post anymore? I have lurked for years but I keep reading
ReplyDeleteAnonT- what can this Canadian say but SORRY, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI hope you were only referring to the CREOLE ear worm, and not the problem with your G account and your being truly Anonymous.
Welcome back Yellowrocks. Wondered where you have been.
ReplyDeleteWilbur, I saw a PBS show, "Defending Food" (I think that was the name) that showed an ethnic group in Africa that ate a Paleo diet. Cancer and was nonexistent, as well as other western diet ailments. Did you see HG's chart ?
Misty, much has changed in the knowledge of eye doctors in the last 30 years. There are advantages to a second opinion, especially from a new perspective. I have had 55 years of experience with the best of the best eye doctors but there were times I had to move on to get the most current treatment.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Cancer and?????
ReplyDeleteYes, DUGOUT should have told me it was CC. Then again we have CLIP(per) Yankee; and COOPer(ex Bosox and Brewer 1B man
ReplyDeleteYR, welcome back. Glad all is well and went so well
TTP, I would say Stress, tobacco, exhaust and yes food additives play a much bigger role in Cancer.
Btw, Scientists tracking the anti-animal fat "dogma" found very little basis for it. Butter and fatty meats are not the big culprits they're portrayed as.
I'll stick with my banana and cheese crackers, Cheerios w milk, eggsnbacon... In moderation. The big problem is the walking pool is closed for the month.

YR - I missed that you posed while I was composing. Welcome back and I hope you are at least 1/2 way done with all that laundry.
ReplyDeleteJinx - at the risk of getting political; ++Like re: FCC's "taxes." Anyone ever look closely at your phone ISP (MagillaGo - Internet Service Provider) bill?
C, Eh! - Don't be SORRY; I love Dire Straits. The MFA SNAFU is not at all your fault.
D-O: At BlackHat I got one of these YubiKeys from a vendor. I was looking at how we (my company) could use them for Social Media authentication protection and added the Yubi to my Google Account.

Cheers, -T
Thank you, Lemonade. My current eye doctor is fairly young, but I'll still keep the possibility of a change in mind if I don't think I'll get any improvement.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, YR. I figured you'd gone to W.V. Glad things went well. Sounds like you are revitalized. I've always wanted to go there. I had an ancestor born there in Meigs Co. (if I remember right) who later died in the Civil War. It wasn't W.V. when he was born tho.
ReplyDeleteMisty - getting a 2nd opinion doesn't mean you're changing doctors. Most good drs. think it's a good idea.
ReplyDeleteBut WV just impeached their ENTIRE Supreme Court! For peculation and other low crimes! Such interesting times we live in.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind the high cost of AT&T cable ... if I at least had some choice in the channels they shove on us. The ones I want are $20-$30 a month each, on top of the dreck I'm forced to pay for. I really do NOT want to keep up with the Kardashians!
