Boomer here. First and foremost, I am pleased to convey a Happy New Year,  Rosh Hashanah to members of Jewish faith that participate on the Crossword Corner.

At home, the "Magic Number" finally hit zero, and it looks like our Twins are headed to New York to play the Yankee Doodle Dandies.  Too early to JUDGE who might win.

  1. FIWrong. misspelt COrUe and SeLERNO, didn't know ASTeA or BeO, and just didn't check TRUrR.

    ODA MAE from COEUR d'ALENE
Traveled south to seek her fame.
    Wouldn't you know,
    Back in Idaho
Everyone seemed to know her name!

    ETONIANS never wear T-SHIRTS
Those are clothes for the common squirts.
    They wear only tweed
    Or silk when they need
And ignore the chafes when they hurt!

    ABIGAIL went sightseeing in SALERNO.

  2. Good morning!

When did gray matter become WHITE MATTER? Once again, d-o solved the puzzle but failed to get the theme. Finished in good time with no need for Wite-Out. Thanx, Roland and Boomer.

TV ADS -- If we couldn't F-F through the ads, we wouldn't watch much TV. We also time delay almost everything. We watch Jeopardy! in the evening, even though it's on "live" in late morning.

FLU -- Yup, I get that flu shot every year. Some years it's very effective, others, not so much. The medical folks have to guess in the spring which flu strains will be active in the fall. Sometimes they get it wrong.

PART D -- I encourage all Medicare beneficiaries to check PART D plans every year during open enrollment. Just go to medicare.gov, enter your medications, and see which plan offers the best price. You can switch plans every year with no penalty. Last year I switched, because my cheap 2018 plan became one of the most expensive 2019 plans.

SALERNO -- This is the Salerno of my ute.

Happy birthday, Pat. Are you still reading the blog?

  3. FIW. Monday. I blame staying up watching the Saints's ROMP over my Cowboys. Great game - I would just as soon see those two play each other for the next 12 weekends. I had EATON mAN and SeLERNO. Erased AMOre.

Boomer, what kind of car do you have that didn't come with a trip odometer? If you have an LED odometer I'll bet you have a RESET function. Even my beloved 2001 RAV4 has one.

My Verizon retiree health plan has a wrap-around PART D drug plan. Good prices and no donut hole.

I, of course, wanted 3D to be RE-UNTIE.

Is 3.1415 TRUER than 3.14, or just more precise?

The old guy was asked how things had changed over his 40 years of marriage. He said "Well I didn't expect my beautiful bride to GO FLAT. When we said I DO she was a 34 B. Now she's a 38 long.

Shirley Stockwell immortalized Cleopatra with her classic Elizabeth Taylor Thighs, sung to the tune of kim Carnes' Bette Davis Eyes. Can't find it on YouTube, unfortunately.

Thanks to Roland for the fun puzzle. Sorry I messed it up. And thanks to Boomer for another mirthful Monday. Wish it was Sunday. That's my fun day. (Oh, that was The Bangles. Never mind.)

  5. Fun Monday speed run as usual - needed the theme reveal to figure out the big picture!
D-O we have both gray and WHITE MATTER in the brain, although there is some overlap in their make-up! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_matter

Boomer -and everyone else - even if you haven't before - get your flu shot!! You are relatively immunosuppressed with your cancer treatment and if you got the flu would have a harder time fighting it off. The flu shot is usually ~50 % effective- but I see this all the time- even if you get the flu and had the shot- you are much less sick because it is helping your immune system to jump on it sooner (e.g. person who had a flu shot - temp usually 99-101 for a few days, sick for about a week vs person who did not have a flu shot- temp 102 to 106 for 5-8 days and sick for 2-4 weeks afterward!) End of PSA :)

  6. Typical Monday romp. No words that were new to me.
I thought all cars have had trip odometers for many years.
Medicare Part D for prescriptions is very valuable. Linking them lowers the cost of my prescription plan.
NJ has Ye Olde Curiositie Shoppe and Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe to name a few. The spelling is an advertising ploy to suggest quaintness.
Inane hiker, I must have read the same article saying the brain has both gray matter and white matter. Per Wikipedia: "Grey matter is distinguished from white matter in that it contains numerous cell bodies and relatively few myelinated axons, while white matter contains relatively few cell bodies and is composed chiefly of long-range myelinated axon tracts.[1] The colour difference arises mainly from the whiteness of myelin"
I saw a TV show based on many Abigail Adams many articulate, marvelous letters to her husband, John Adams. She was a wise and articulate woman who advocated women's rights.
The Devil Wears Pravda, starring Meryl Streep, was one of my favorite movies.
Happy birthday, Pat. I hope you will chime in today.

  8. Good Morning:

With the first two alliterative themers, I was jarred by the Tail Light entry. I had a hunch we were looking for a match for both clue words, but White Matter came as a complete surprise. The only unknown was Hot Stuff and I had no w/os, so the solve was quick and easy peasy. Is Bread Board a common term?

Thanks, Roland, for a smooth beginning to the week and thanks, Boomer, for the many chuckles and blasts from the past. I caught your drift with Nes, BTW. Let's not get into any snits about the Yankees ~ Twins contest, okay? I agree 100 % with inanehiker about the flu shot. I got mine last Friday. The Evers in Tinkers to Evers to Chance is from Troy.

Happy Birthday, Pat and Hubby. Have a delightful dual celebration. 🎂🎂🎁🎁🎈🎈🎉🎉🍾🍾

Madame Defarge, has the packing begun?

    Have a great day.

  9. IM, "Bread Board" was a common expression in my ute. Mom had two cutting boards -- one for bread, another for meat. On occasion she'd call that one the meat bread board.

  10. Good morning, folks. Thank you, Roland Huget, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Boomer, for a fine review.

I got my flu shot on Saturday at the CVS. I am an usher at the Shriners Hospital in Chicago and cannot go in unless I have a flu shot.

Happy Birthday, Pat and hubby. Same day. Interesting.

Caught the theme early. Worked out fine.

Unknowns: BAO and ODA. That's the only two today.

I like playing CHARADES. Fun game.

Well, I am off to church to Count. See you tomorrow.

  11. Good morning everyone.

WHITE MATTER theme today. No 'white-out' in the solve or what I sometimes need to use but not today. No problem areas.
ABIGAIL Adams - A courageous woman. She took the decision in during s smallpox epidemic in 1776 to inoculate herself and the 4 children against the disease while John was in Philadelphia. (A formal vaccine was not developed until the 1790's.)
SALERNO - Site of a major Allied landing in WWII.
RIIS - Jacob Riis Park, also called Jacob A. Riis Park or Jacob Riis State Park, is a seaside park at the southwestern end of the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens.
FLU - My doctor discussed the FLU shot with me last week. Thought it was too early and could wait until my next visit at the end of February. Hopefully by then ………….

  12. Thank you, Roland and Boomer.

    Boomer, what's a whooper ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Spitzboov- getting a flu shot in February is way too late!! If you are >65, then fine to get now as you get the HD immunization which has a longer peak of 6 months. If you are < 65, then anytime in October / November. The flu season is generally end of November through March. So you can go to your doctor's office anytime just to get the shot or get it at your local pharmacy if it's inconvenient to go to your doctor's office before February!

    ReplyDelete
  14. TTP, to us bird-o-files, a "whooper" is a type of crane.

My grandfather died of the flu pandemic of 1918, when my dad was 4. I'm not taking any chances. Spitz, why wait? Around here we run out of the high-dose dosage, which is recommended for seniors.

  15. Musings
-I sometimes golf at beautiful WHITE TAIL Golf Course high above the Platte River
-MIL CULLED out non-producing chickens periodically
-ARE you awake? We all have sung the opposite question, “Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques, Dormez-vous?”
-STROBE lights showing a golf swing
-We caught the ferry to Capri from Salerno that is also near Sorrento and Naples
-Shop TIL I drop? Electronics – yes! Cloth – no!
-400 B.C. In Greece, Hippocrates administered willow leaf tea, which contains the natural compound from which ASPIRIN is derived, to women to ease the pain of childbirth.
-When I am manning the helm (steering), my lovely bride feels the need to, uh, help
-IDIOM – This puzzle was a piece of cake, not a hard nut to crack, where I did not have to burn the midnight oil because Roland and I were on the same page
    -Happy birthday, Pat!

  16. Thanx Jinx. But I don't think Boomer was referring to cranes in "...almost as bad as the whoopers at ball games"

Pat, Happy Birthday to you (and your husband) !

  17. Today's puzzle by Roland was a good Monday level puzzle. Boomer added the info and humor to the grid tour.

Only one word was unknown: BAO. However, there were a few where I knew the word, but my spelling was not correct at first: COEUR, FOIE and AMOUR. Perps to the rescue.

I got my flu shot on Friday also. This year I got the Senior Flu shot at the local Geisinger medical office because last year when I had the regular strength Flu shot I came down with the flu in January and then again in March. Apparently as we age our immune systems need more antigens to create stronger protection from the Flu. See Flu Article 1 and Flu Article 2.

@Spitzboov 9:21: Like inanehiker said, I wouldn't wait until February to get a flu shot based on my experience from last year. See above.

Boomer: You might want to reconsider your decision to not get a flu shot. Immune systems change as we get older.

    Have a great day everyone.

  18. TTP, ever have a flock of them poop on you? It's migration season as well as (regular) football.

  19. I guessed that perhaps whoopers is Boomer's term or a regionalism for alcohol-fueled fans at a ball game that whoop it up. Just not sure.

  20. My mom called a wooden cutting board a breadboard all her life. When she was young, all bread was homemade and was cut on a breadboard. When I was growing up mom baked bread only occasionally. I baked it even less occasionally. One time when I tried to bake it, I left the dough to rise. Then David at age two broke his leg and we took him to the emergency room. By the time we returned hours later the dough had ballooned astronomically. Without much hope for a good result, I punched it down and continued with the recipe. The baked bread was tough and inedible.

  21. Good Morning.

I haven't done a puzzle since last Wednesday since my grand kids had been here since Friday. It was a solo flight as my DH was at his Aunt's funeral in N. H. This Gramma is exhausted, and so fully respects grands who help with childcare for their kids. AND it rained all weekend!!! We had fun anyway!

Thanks, Roland for today's puzzle. I was so out of it, I made some foolish mistakes, but caught them on the crosses. Nicely done.

Boomer, thank you once again for a full tour of today's puzzle. I appreciate your efforts to keep smiles on our faces.

IM: not packing yet. I have it down pat, plus I have learned to take fewer clothes as I have a washer and dryer in the apt. I don't mind doing the laundry as I can sit on the porch and knit as I watch the ocean and listen to the migrating birds. We leave 10-12, and we are really looking forward to it!! I do love being at the ocean in Maine.

Have a sunny day everyone. I hope all is well with all of you.

  22. Medgar Evers volunteered for service during WWII. He participated in the Battle of Normandy. In the early 50s he got involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1963 he was assassinated in front of his two children while walking to his car in the driveway of his home. His killer, Byron De La Beckwith, was found not guilty by all white juries in two separate trials. In 1994
Beckwith was tried again and found guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison. RIP, Edgar.

I am not anti-vax. But I had my first and last flu shot five years ago. Ended up in the hospital for two days. Could barely breathe.

  23. Fun Monday puzzle, which is a great way to start the week. And I got the whole thing, even though the top left took a bit of work. So, many thanks, Roland. I got ASP right away, a good start. Glad I always remember MEESE, who comes up a lot in puzzles these days. But never heard of BAO and was relieved that it was right. Boomer, your write up was a delight, and I enjoyed your HOPE story. Also, conjuring up Sandra for DEE. So, many thanks to you too.

Desper-otto, does "Jeopardy" really come on in the morning? I'll have to check my program guide.

Happy birthday, Pat and husband. How nice to hear about your almost identical birthdays.

Have a good week coming up, everybody.

  24. Hola!

This was a fun ROMP and I even got the theme! Thank you, Roland.

For me, too, BAO was the only unknown but it emerged nicely. I know Jacob RIIS only from CWDs.

The DEVIL Wears Prada is also my favorite Meryl Streep movie. She is always great in any part she plays, but in that one she was extraordinary.

I am an ardent admirer of ABIGAIL Adams. She was unusually outspoken for the time and thanks to the vast correspondence between her and her husband, John, we have wonderful insight to not only their relationship but her views of the development of the fledgling nation.

I took a chance and spelled COEUR right!

Thanks for the many reminders about the FLU shots. I'll go today for mine.

    Happy birthday, Pat and husband!

    Have a peaceful day, everyone!

  25. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAT ... tonight's first "Sunset Toast" is to YOU!

  26. Hmm, 2 days now, I am confused...
    Today, Boomer said:
    1. Gull relatives: TERNS. I wonder if, when the birds get together for Thanksgiving, do they sit on the left or right?
I am sure this is very funny, or deep, but I just don't understand it...
When I try to visualize this, I wind up with a pair in a nest...

Yesterday, They said Nom = Nancy? (must be foreign) is this birds name Nancy?

Then Boomer says he doesn't have a trip meter?
All cars have trip meters! The old ones had mechanical odometers with a 2nd trip
meter below, & the new ones are electronic & you have to push the little stick
thingie switch to change between mileage, trip, and oil usage...
But, then I understand, cars can be a lot like their owners....

hbd Pat! you don't know how hard it was not to post kids playing PattyCake!

    The Theme?
How to post? you have to be so politically correct these days...

    & Breadboards?
The breadboards of my Ute were for electronics...

  27. Fun Monday puzzle. Timely finish but two quick corrections. one was an "erreur" put "fois" in stead of "foie". The other was an "errore" put "Sorrento" instead of "Salerno"

The actress who is Jayne Mansfield's daughter looks almost exactly like her in the picture.

  28. oc4 and Inane - - Thanks for your concern. I will give it some thought. I'm mindful that the flu strains that dominate each year and may / may not give protection in a specific instance.

Shana Tova to those observing Rosh Hashanah today.

A suitable recipe today from Howard at the Mr. Food Test Kitchen:

    Old-World Harvest Casserole (tzimmes?)

    What You'll Need:
2 (29-ounce) cans sweet potatoes, drained
2 (14-1/2-ounce) cans whole carrots, drained
1 (20-ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 1/2 cup pitted dry prunes
    1/2 cup orange juice
    3/4 cup honey
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter, melted
    1 teaspoon salt
    What To Do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine the ingredients; mix well.
Bake uncovered 60 to 65 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally.
    Spoon mixture into casserole dish.
    "Notes:
We know, this may sound a …well just let’s say, a bit odd, but let me assure you it’s anything but. Our favorite part is when the topping of this gets a bit toasty, which gives it a nutty rich flavor. To ensure there is plenty of this part to go around, we suggest baking this on the top rack of your oven."

  29. Marvelous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Roland and Boomer.
I found a little crunch in this CW today, but I FIRed and saw the WHITE theme. IMHO the theme was a little meh! but maybe just a Monday letdown.

Some American unknowns like Medicare PART D, HMO, ABIGAIL, RIIS, were filled with perps.
I smiled at HOT STUFF crossing BUFFS, and ACHE crossing ASPIRIN. (I agree Boomer that ASPIRIN is "old school" now -- for everything except secondary (no longer primary) prevention in established cardiovascular disease.)

It can be GRIM when even the FAIREST singers GET UP and GO FLAT.

Yes Boomer, FLU shots work, but some years the strain match is closer than other years, improving the efficacy. Many benefits (also the "herd immunity" which protects others who cannot have the shot). I see inanehiker et al have already chimed in on this topic. Our stock of vaccine does not usually arrive until late October.

Has anyone here seen Ad ASTRA starring Brad Pitt?

    Happy Birthday Pat and DH.
Wishing you all a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Canadian Eh
We are planning to see Ad Astra tomorrow afternoon then I'll report. Where we usually go in Tempe AMC the parking validation was not accepted so we shall have to go to a different one. I happen to still have some AMC gift cards.

Linda Ronstadt's movie is also showing and I want to see that, too.

  31. The annual flu shot is better than nothing. We Americans have worked hard to expunge historical memory, but if you study the years 1918-1920 and the Spanish flu you will find that the influenza not just put people in bed for a while, but KILLED widely.

I'd rather avoid that ... even if the vaccine is not at a 100% level, even if some different strain comes along.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jerome Gunderson @ 11:32, there were hung juries for Byron De La Beckwith's first two trials. Found guilty after a third trial in 1994 after new evidence found. Double jeopardy laws would prevent another trial after a not-guilty finding.

  33. Thank you, Roland Huget, for the fun Monday adventure! I had trouble at 1a and 6a and thought, this hard for Monday? Things settled down and the rest of it came easily. Thanks for the expo, Boomer. Delightful as always.

I didn't understand the theme so needed that explained. Guess I wasn't quite with it today. On to Tuesday.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I've aggravated an old back injury so we're staying home tonight where I can sit more comfortably. I did have a nice visit with my favorite chiropractor who is helping me with this issue. I do read the blog every day, I just don't feel I have anything to add to the conversations. My age hasn't bothered me much until this year. For the first time my age starts with a 7. That's sobering, but better than the alternative.

Have a great rest of your day!

You were sooo close. Actually her name was Magill and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as NANCY.

I loved the matter/energy hoodie. An erg isn't much energy, but 9 x 10^16 ergs is a LOT of energy. Multiply that by the body's mass in grams and the numbers get explosive.

  35. A very clever pzl from Mr. Huget and an equally bright response from our Boomer. Neat work, guys!

Jerome Gunderson ~ Thank you for posting about Medgar EVERS, a true hero of the Civil Rights movement. He deserves to be remembered, even in a Xwd blog.

Owen ~ I like all the limericks, with #2 as my favorite. I'd give that one an "A."

  36. LW and I just got back from getting our flu shots and running some errands.

I liked this puzzle and all the white stuff.

Happy birthday, Pat and Mr. Pat.

  37. I must get my flu shot. I make it a point to always stay ahead of the season--because of family lore.
My mother's parents, immigrants from Cornwall (Grandpa) and Wales (Grandma) died in Sacramento in the 1918 epidemic--just two months after my mom was born.
She was raised by her aunt, her father's married sister.
It is a sad, romantic tale. My grandparents were in their early 20s, looking wonderfully handsome in the one photo I have. My young grandad had trekked all the way across country from PA to CA where he met my beautiful grandma, who had sailed around the Horn to find work here as a nurse.

    They found each other.
They married, had my mom, and then died within a week of one another.

I think of them every time I get my shot.

  38. Note to TTP. There are people that show up at Twins games and let loose LOUD WHOOs for no apparent reason. We had a few in a Spring bowling league also, and I won't be joining that league in the future.
Note to JINX, Of course my Dodge van has an odometer. But I do not have a TRIP odometer. If I want to know the length of a trip, I need to write down the mileage setting when I leave, and again when I get there, then do the math.
Thanks to both of you for asking and enjoy the rest of the day, Sorry, I bowl Monday mornings and coach the kids in the afternoon. Then I have supper and C.C. lets me use our computer'

  39. OMK:
That is a beautiful but sad story. Thank you for sharing it.

I just went to OfficeMax to have the Newsletter printed then to Walgreen's for my flu shot. Honestly, I don't see how OfficeMax stays in business. It's mostly deserted and with only one clerk and a long waiting line in the printing area.

  40. Thank all who have given a Shout Out to the New Year. Spitz - the tzimmes recipe sounds perfect but we use fresh sweet potatoes, carrots, and pineapples. May the year 5780 be a happy healthy and fulfilling year for all. I have started the year still battling pneumonia and a broken blood vessel in my good eye Subconjunctival bleeding - please do not click if pictures upset you.

Happy birthday and many more Pat.

OMK, that is one of the sweetest saddest stories and a reminder of what progress has brought, even with all the bad things we do not have to deal with many old fears.

  41. I neglected to send greetings to all those here who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah. May the New Year be sweet and fruitful.

  42. Jinx@3:48,
    LOL! (Excellent!)

    Boomer,
can you pls provide your Dodge year, and model?
(I have to see this dashboard...)
AT 1st, I was in the dark about your odometer. But it turns out the trip meter reset button has an important function in Dodge cars...

  43. I seem to recall, sans LIU, that Bob Grim won 20 games circa 1960. Was it Yankees or A's? We * talked about that NY-KC Pipeline '55-60.
Boomer you forgot "Hoot" Evers who was in the big Redsox-Tigers trade. The Sox got Kell the Tigers got Pesky, he of the famous Fenway pole***

Owen, my grades were the exact reverse except a full grade higher in the chuckle scale- OMK agreed I see

There was a famous book about the Adams which naturally featured a lot of Abigail. I can't find the name. I remember the quote about the dyspeptic environment of his London digs.

Bingo. McCullough John Adams, thx Gary. YR, right up your alley

I thought BAO was dim sum.

** Ok, Wilbur talked about it. I have a fantasy that there's somebody out there, Kankakee perhaps, that reads my posts
