Theme: Any Portmanteau in a storm.  The letters of the prefix INSTA- are scrambled, and the concept is tied together, as we shall see later, with the suffix -GRAM.

17 A. Ellington-Strayhorn hit to which Johnny Mercer later added lyrics: SATIN DOLL. Love the tune, not crazy about Mercer's lyrics.  Here is the best arrangement ever, by Sammy Nestico for the Count Basie band.

45. Spot treatment: STAIN REMOVER.  Cleaning agent.

59. Social networking service ... or an apt portmanteau for the starts of 17-, 27- and 45-Across: INSTAGRAM.  OK.  The letters of INSTA have been presented in various configurations, and the -GRAM suffix indicates something in writing.  And mashing them together does generate a portmanteau, sort of.  But the surface sense is at best, pretty thin; and the whole concept is a bit of a stretch.  But, high marks for creativity and originality.

Nope, didn't see the theme. Again. Misread "Spot treatment" as "Spa treatment." D'oh. No problem with the solve, though, so life is good. Thanx, Roland and JzB.

YEOMAN: Only officers have "ranks," enlisted folk have "rates." Yeoman is neither -- it's a job, basically a clerk, denoted on the uniform by crossed quills.

Best wishes on your recovery, Dennis.

  7. 53. Coin often left in a dish: CENT. The U.S. penny is worth one CENT. I'm not sure what this clue is getting at.

My take on this clue is that it may be referring to the small dish or container often seen at a cashier station in a convenient store or diner that has the little note next to it, "Have a penny? Leave a penny. Need a penny? Take a penny."

  8. Good morning everyone.

Easy solve today. Only hang-up was I had Ensign for CG rank, and then saw it was going to be YEOMAN.
YEOMAN is not a rank in the Coast Guard or the Navy. Seaman is a rank, Petty Officer Third Class is a rank. Yeoman is a rating. Sometimes it is an (informal) position like a ship's Yeoman.

    Off to play some bridge.

  9. Four score and six years ago a baseball team that played in this city[Washington D.C] went to a World Series. It lost. That team eventually went to Minnesota. The expansion team that replaced it moved to Texas. More than three decades later, baseball returned, Montreal Expos disguised as something new. And until Tuesday night, beneath bistro lights hung across the outfield bleachers, before 43,976 people who stood with their jaws clenched, across generations and generations of on-and-off-again hardball stories, there had not been another World Series team here, not since 1933.

Finally, the baseball soared toward center fielder Victor Robles, pitcher Daniel Hudson raised his arms, grown men poured from the dugout behind him, and this town shed its hard and raw memories that too often came with baseball. The Nationals were 7-4 winners. They had swept the St. Louis Cardinals in four games. They would play the winner of the American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees or Houston Astros, in a World Series that wouldn’t begin for a week, and then host a World Series game here for the first time in too many scores to remember.

  11. Good Morning:

I saw the letters of I N S T A in the themers but was expecting a reveal relating to Saint something or other. I accept Jzb's analysis of the Gram part of the reveal but I don't find it a very strong connection. In fact, before reading the expo, I was totally bewildered about the portmanteau itself. I had Aide before Page and also fell into the Seaman/Yeoman trap. Seeing Sela Ward with an FBI reference was jarring as she's no longer on the show. I miss her understated and measured performance and do not like her replacement's totally opposite, direct and forceful acting style. Arie and Baum, as clued, needed perps. CSO to Lucina at Arizona.

Thanks, Roland, for an enjoyable solve and thanks, JzB, for the grand tour, especially the portmanteau explanation.

Happy Birthday to CED, hope it's a special day. 🎂🎈🎉🍾🎁

Happy Birthday to Bluehen, hope you're treated to a special meal, prepared by someone else! 🎂🎈🎉🎁🍾

CanadianEh, belated Happy Thanksgiving. Sorry for missing your special holiday and hope you enjoyed the turkey and all the trimmings!

Anonymous T ~ As Yogi would say, "It ain't over til the fat lady sings." May the best team win. On a more serious note, if you went two weeks without smoking, you can forgo the "occasional" need for one. I know from whence I speak, even though compared to Wilbur's 45 years of abstinence, I'm celebrating "only" 25 years, as of December 13th.

  12. FIR, but erased round for ORBED and erat for ERGO.

CASH COW is a technical term. Large market share in a mature market. Source of funds for pursuing new products and services, or just providing stable dividends to the owners. Used in family settings, the term usually means "Dad".

You should be cognizant of your companions before you say PINCH ME.

I liked the clues and "peek-____" and "one who takes off a lot" until the latter turned out to be AVIATOR. Down boy, no LEVITRA for you.

Pete DYE is a famous designer of very difficult golf courses. I liked seeing DYED next to RAKE. I support the concept of removing RAKEs from bunkers. Proficient golfers often aim for them because they are more likely to hit it close enough out of the bunker to make their first putt. I think a sand trap should be a TRAP.

A cent in a dish goes back to those quaint days when most folks paid cash for most things. I have a friend who manages a local restaurant, and he says that his cash receipts aren't enough to pay out the tips added to credit card tabs. We have a few restaurants that won't take cash at all.

FLN, -T when I quit smoking in 1978 (ring a bell?), I went through the American Heart Association's smoking cessation program at a local hospital. One of the techniques I used was was to wrap a piece of paper around my pack, and I had to write down the details every time I lit up. Where and what time it was, who I was with, what was going on, and what I was feeling. A couple of weeks later I had quit for good. By the way - you are far too smart to smoke. Unless your DW smokes, she will LOVE kissing a nonsmoker, and I hope it is YOU!

  15. Woohoo! A Wednesday toughie, and I feared I wasn't going to get this one. But slowly everything filled in and I got it. Woohoo! Many thanks, Roland. Nice to see Zora NEALE Hurston right away, and then Cousin ITT. AMAZED helped me get ARIZona and MENSA. I put in CENT since I got NO ONE, but, like others, didn't know why a penny would be left as a tip or something. And it was fun to get IGOR. Perps helped me get ATM but I don't think I've ever heard cash referred to as "scratch." And it was nice to get LSD TRIP, although, thank goodness, I've never been on one. So, fun puzzle, thanks again, Roland, and you too, JazzB.

Wishing Dennis a good recovery from his surgery.

Happy Birthday, CED and Blue Hen.

Owen, you sure were on a poem roll today.

Jinx, I smoked for about ten years, but decided to quit as I approached my thirties. Decided the easiest way for me was to switch to small cigars, which I didn't inhale, but still let me light up and do the smoking routine. I was the first woman ever hired in the Tulsa English department, and at the first department meeting, they pointed out that they had a side for smokers and another side for non smokers. When I sat down in the smoking section and lit up my small cigar, they almost had heart attacks. Couldn't believe they'd hired a female cigar smoker. My addiction wore off quickly, though, and I never smoked again. And the department hired lots of other women after me.

  19. Hola!

Happy birthday, CEDave! Happy birthday, Blue Hen! I hope you have exceptional celebrations.

Thank you, Roland Huget and JazzBumpa! This was a whole lot of fun!

I, too, was happy to see Zora NEALE Hurston whose book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, I read but since it was written in dialect, it was a slog.

LSDTRIP took me back to the headlines of the 60s.

IPHONE crossing EBOOK seems appropriate in this technological age.

Irish Miss, thank you for the CSO at ARIZona! Yes, it's an arid zone!

AVIATOR makes me miss Dudley. I hope all is well with him.

And I hope all is well with Dennis. It's good to know the surgery was successful.

I tripped and fell at OAKS/KEY. For some reason my mind just wouldn't work there though I had FRET/HIYA.

When I saw "air Jordan" my mind fixated on Jordan and I thought of the river until the penny dropped and NIKE fell in place.

In Istanbul we visited the Topkapi Palace, former home of the Sultans, and toured the HAREM quarters. It's a series of many small rooms linked together.

MENSA is a good place to find and print the LAT puzzle if it's not otherwise available.

Have a very pleasant day, everyone!

  20. Thanks to Roland for a nicely challenging puzzle, and to Jazzb. for the enlightening explication, especially the theme, It was way over my head until he explained it. I think I understand it now.

Happy Birthday, CED, and many happy returns. And a big "Thank You" to all who wished me the same. It's true. Today I celebrate (?) the thirty-seventh anniversary of my thirty-ninth birthday, or as Husker Gary might put it, "Today I completed my seventy-sixth orbit of the sun, and am happily already embarked on my seventy-seventh." IM, I'll be going out to my favorite gastro pub, where I'll have dinner prepared by Chef Armando. His specials always are just that. Don't know what I'll have yet, but it is bound to be good.

DW and I usually celebrated special occasions with a fancy dinner at a local Northern Italian restaurant with great food and a wine list that "Wine Spectator" magazine raves about, but somehow without her company, a brew pub seemed to fill the bill for me.

CC, pictures? I don't have any recent ones. I tried taking selfies, but I got tired of replacing cameras in smart phones.

    Dennis, get well soon.

  21. Well, I shot myself in the foot in this puzzle, requiring me to look up Mr. Luyendyk's first name in order to finish. Specifically, I had (over)confidently entered GEM as thing on a ring and HI MA as the casual greeting. Even after looking up ARIE I still had no idea what OAGS were. I figured GEM was wrong (although the E was correct) but didn't know what else to put in there until I went for a walk and came back later.

I wanted tp put in ABDOMEN and have no idea why I didn't. I should have, in hindsight.

And, like CEDave, I put in an L to give NELLE and BLUM. Happy birthday to you!

I learned the Senate helper was PAGE, not AIDE, and the place where a mote can be seen was RAY, not EYE.

And finally, I learned that the reliable source of income was not ROTH IRA.

FREE WIFI is nifty fill. I also liked LSD TRIP.

Seeing JazzB mention NaOH reminded me of a recent Jeopardy episode in which the periodic-table symbols for those three elements, plus that of carbon, spell out the name of one of Ol'Man Keith's dogs: NaCHO.

Happy birthday greetings to you too, Bluehen, and good wishes to you all.

The next time I see you all I'll have 2 fewer teeth.

  22. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. But to quote JzB, "let me get this straight". I was stuck in the NE, filling ON A LARK that changed to the correct ON A DARE. But the 'Gale' clue had me stumped. and for the "Under the chest" clue I kept thinking six-pack abs, and with even ABDO_EN in place, BAUM would not fall. Don't know why but I filled AB DOZEN. Duh! DNF.

FREE WI FI- there's a man I've seen many times who lives in his minivan, parks it at Wal-Mart, pays his dues for the local hospital health club so he can use the showers. He's old enough to be on Medicare so he probably has a Medicare Advantage plan that provides a free health club membership. I see his van parked at the local Wendy's, MacDonald's, Starbucks, and Wal_Mart. He is never eating anything but is always on his laptop at the restaurants using the free WIFI. I guess he washes his clothes at a washateria.

  30. Thanks, admin, for removing the post by Anonymous @ 7:04. It sounded fishy to me. I may be overly cautious, but I was very leery of it.

Anonymous@6:50 as I wrote at 4:32, the name Instagram is a portmanteau of "instant camera" and "telegram." Anagram would make little sense. I found this answer at two places. Here is one website.
    Instagram

Anonymous T, my point, exactly. IMHO, saying I would like to have just one every few days is not realistic. Every time that idea arises, you need to say, "I'll have my just one tomorrow," If it comes up again, answer, "Tomorrow."
Okay, I will untie my mother apron strings now. Just trying to be your friend.

  32. Kind of a weak theme, but not many crosswordy-words, so I enjoyed the puzzle.

  33. 33D fingerboard bar:FRET

If you ever got discouraged trying to play Bar Chords
on a guitar, try doing what Joni Mitchel does...
Tuning to an open D chord opens a world of opportunities using just one finger!

    Happy Birthday BlueHen!

I am so full I could not make room for the red bean ice cream...

  34. I guess “crosswordese” is the term I was looking for, those obscure words that too frequently show up as crossword answers, and which I have also expanded to include somewhat common words or proper nouns that over-frequent crosswords (e.g. ETON, EKE, etc etc). Roland is a good constructor, and limits their use. To me, fun clues and answers is the most important requirement for a good puzzle. Not a tough slog, or at the other extreme obvious answers.

  35. Wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for the fun, Roland and JazzB.
I am late to the party again; this is a busy week.
I FIWed with my personal Natick of ARIE and KEY. (My fingerboard bar ended up as a FIST!)

I noted all the technology today with EBOOK, IPHONE, NET TV, INSTAGRAM and FREE WIFI to access them.
I was upset at the "under the sink cleaners" being LYES, not thinking that under the sink referred to the clogged drain. I was thinking of storage, and you definitely don't want to store LYES there, especially if there might be children around!

Thanks for the belated Thanksgiving wishes, IM and AnonT. Yes the turkey (and everything else) was delicious; I enjoyed the leftovers even better as I was not rushing around trying to make sure the crowd was fed.

Happy Birthday CED and BlueHen (glad you posted today).
    Continued prayers for Dennis.

  36. YR - I knew you were being a friend. It was just funny that I initially read you as "put off putting off the vice for just a day" as opposed to "put off the vice for just a day." You see the addiction still holds me :-)

TTP - you were pretty quick taking down the scammer saving us from scammers [I will refrain from politics here...] YR - you were right it was shady.

CED - um, there were no details about the eel sauce; BlueHen would have certainly included that :-) Good thing you have that kitty "fluff" after all that Sushi.

C,Eh! - hardly prototypical 'Canadian Nice' w/ your Fist board ;-)

C.C. - I appreciated the update on Dennis. Please keep his status coming.

    Dennis - Semper Fi!

    Cheers, -T

  37. Dash T, I delete them as soon as I see them, but like Argyle used to say (paraphrased), "I'm not here 24 7."

What's funny is when I read frantic comments (almost shouting as if in all caps) on the blog saying a particular comment needs to be removed. Uh, I can recognize them when I see them, and don't need a comment in the blog (that I'm not seeing at that particular point in time anyway, or it would already be gone) to tell me that it needs to be removed. Doesn't help.

Guess I need to publish my Pageboy Director beeper number. It's AC 212-555-5555.

OTOH, I think the vast majority of our readers can recognize spam posts and won't just blindly click links or start sending emails to Dr Ordumodu about any one of the 25 illnesses the poster claims he can cure.

  38. TTP - That's the Pageboy number!; and here I was dialin' BR-549 :-)

Thanks for taking up Santa Scott's YEOMAN duties around The Corner. We really do appreciate it.

  39. FLN, -T, I had just bought a pack at my barroom hangout. I offered one and the guy gave me the "black lung" spiel.

"You're right" I said but "How do I quit?"

"You just don't smoke" he said. "So, what do I do with the pack I just bought?". "Throw it away, you don't smoke anymore"

I tossed it into the basket behind the bar and that was it. The key? I'm such a cheapskate I couldn't go through the agony of ever tossing a pack again . And…
Congratulations Irish Miss for 25 years(and Jinx too I see for 45)

Try throwing out a carton, Tony, at $62.00 per that'll cure ya.

    Back to today...
Darn .. Dorothy Gale not the Swiss Family Robinsons. Duh. The SWR family named GALE??? I guess I was thinking of Howard Blum. Dorothy and the gang did break the wizard's canard. I see birthday boy also had BLUM

    And hbd bluehen, too

I just clicked on the link… lots of interesting books out there.

Ok, thanks to Gary I just got the portmanteau: An (Ana)GRAM of INSTA.
And that there's a Judy Blum, too . I was so busy grok'ing the West (the key was KEY) I forgot to recheck the NE.

Re. AVIATOR. There's a USF professor who thinks those bones on the Polynesian island might be Amelia's after all.

    Bye for now

    WC

Wow, that was composed this afternoon but apparently not posted

    Good night, all

Btw, that was a crunchy Wednesday, seemed like a Fri
