56. When Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson, in a classic 1990 bout: TENTH ROUND.
Boomer here.
TWO,
FOUR, SIX, EIGHT, Who do we appreciate? Monday puzzles are GREAT. I
checked with Tony the Tiger while he was eating a bowl of Frosted
Flakes.
Across:
1. Really easy task: CINCH. Will the Twins win the AL Central ?
6. Serious cut: GASH. Remember the old golf balls? you could GASH them with a 9 iron and peel the cover and unwind the rubber band. Not anymore.
10. Sect. on a concert ticket: ORCH. Orchestra.
14. In flames: AFIRE.
15. Brink: EDGE.
Reminds me of EDGErton Minnesota. A very small town where the High
School basketball team won the state championship about 40 years ago.
16. Dodgers or Cubs: TEAM. Twins or White Sox?
19. Semester: TERM.
20. Bit of memorabilia: KEEPSAKE.
Last Friday was opening day for the Twins and many other major league
teams. On a shopping trip to Target, I wore my Justin Morneau T-shirt
and my Twins baseball cap which I have adorned with many KEEPSAKE
stadium giveaway pins and buttons. I probably have $150.00 worth of
collectors items on the hat and it's fairly heavy to wear, but "BATTER
UP"!
21. Bee secretion: WAX.
The Hollywood WAX museum has many notables, including: Robin Williams,
Johnny Cash, Elvis (Who needs no surname), Frank Sinatra, and James
Dean.
22. Camera type, for short: SLR.

allowed to go higher than the IDS.
38. Philip of "Kung Fu": AHN.
39. Regrets: RUES.
40. Barely make, with "out": EKE. I know many of you solvers barely EKE out crosswords, but usually not on Monday.
41. Pool stick protector: CUE CASE. A lot of pro pool cues are two pieces screwed together, and need to be separated to fit in the case.
43. Lat. and Ukr., formerly: SSRS.
Maybe so, but I see Super Seniors which is my level in bowling
tournaments. I am still waiting for a vaccine before rolling the ball
again.
47. Hoopla: ADO. Much ADO about nothing.
50. Fairway position: LIE. Also what some of my golf friends do about their score.
51. Mattress you can "float" on: WATERBED.
Never had one of these. Since our bedroom is in an upper floor, I would
be afraid the weight would crash through the floor and we would be
sleeping in the garage.
54. Fellow, to a Brit: CHAP. Sometimes my lips in the winter in Minnesota.
58. Fastening device: HASP.
59. "Not a __": "No idea": CLUE. I think it was done by Miss Scarlet with the rope in the kitchen.

3. More kind: NICER. A Zamboni is a NICER ICER.
4. Farm yield: CROP.
We had a late Spring but I think the farmers are doing fine now. Your
farm girl C.C. has tomatoes and cucumbers growing high as an elephant's
eye.
5. Farm cluckers: HENS. I know I mentioned this before, but my uncle in Siren, Wisconsin had dozens of noisy HENS.
6. Lizards like the Geico mascot: GECKOS. "Just kick it back to over 75 years of sales and service"
7. French farewell: ADIEU. I will hang my heart on the weeping willow tree, and may the world go well with thee..
8. Cpl.'s superior: SGT. We're SGT Pepper's lonely hearts club band, We hope you will enjoy the show! The Beatles, of course.
9. "Psst!": HEY. Hey, Hey Paula!
10. Canada's capital: OTTAWA. AKA OTTAWA EH. USA Covid outbreak scared off the MLB. The Blue Jays are playing in upstate New York.

Treasure Island in Southern Minnesota. Playing five nickels and won
$200.00.
42. Marked by contentiousness, as a game: CHIPPY. Also a bit of a short shot near the greenie.
43. Idaho and Iowa: STATES. I think we forgot INDIANA and ILLINOIS.
44. Actor Rogen: SETH.
46. Admit (to): OWN UP. I admit it. While you are doing this puzzle, I am playing golf.

Boomer
In case you were not here the past two days, Husker Gary has updated our Crossword Corner map. Please email Gary (gschlapfer@gmail.com) if you want your name to be added or removed from the map.
Thanks for your hard work, Gary! You're just incredible!
Nice and easy with some interesting fill. The TROP was where the Sky Way 10K was staged on March 1.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteNo. Not on a Monday. But it's true. I had Phillip AWN and Fung SWUI. Bzzzzt. Enjoy the lovely parting gift. Thanx, Matt and Boomer (SST?)
WATERBED: Bought a king-size in the '70s. No danger of falling through the concrete slab of a single-story house. Learned that waterbeds are not cat-friendly, though. Well, actually, it's the cats who aren't waterbed-friendly.
LPS: I've got a stack of 'em in the closet along with two Technics belt-drive turntables with servo problems.
DENIM: A day without denim is a day without sunshine.
NaomiZ: Thanks for cluing me in why esa is a pronoun for pueblo.
ReplyDeleteBoomer: No Rollie for Fingers?
No t an easy solve , but I got it. Went through the alphabet before settling on AWN. Pure luck..never heard of him.
ReplyDeleteBeen showing my age lately.... lost my cell phone and a 5 by 7 notebook that has I use for daily to do list. Cell phone I could care less about, hardly ever use it, but the notebook is really missed. We are all well here so far, hope it continues. Going to have to be tested soon, having hip replacement surgery.
Stay well.
Best of luck on that surgery, Hondo. I'm told it can be life-changing...in a good way.
ReplyDeleteMusings
ReplyDelete-80F with low humidity today, ahh!
-Fingers as a verb took a while for me to see
-The tailgate GASH in my head has healed nicely
-My golf partner lent me this fabulous book. He covers both kinds of golf LIES
-Marni Nixon’s voice was dubbed over Natalie Wood‘s for I Feel Pretty in West Side Story
-MIL called HENS who didn’t lay eggs clucks because that’s all they did on the nest
-RE-EXAMINE – I had to pass on a great golf outing and all my doctor did was shoot the breeze for 20 minutes
-Variation on Mom’s advice – “It’s better to be visible and not audible”
-Denim jeans are a winter staple for me. Denim shorts? Uh, not ever.
Hi Y'all! 2, 4, 6, 8! We apprecieate Matt for a fun CINCH of a puzzle & Boomer for his humour.
ReplyDeleteTTP: I am thrilled to report NO red-letter runs were necessary today. DNK: ERBE, CHE, AHN, but the perps came to my rescue.
Haven't worn DENIM since many pounds ago.
Hondo: good luck on your hip surgery.
FLN: Tony, glad you liked the farm parodies. Lots of fun on farms despite hard work.
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteEasy; FIR. Even number advance for the theme loomed early. Interesting theme choices. CSO to CanadianEh! with OTTAWA. Also a county in Ohio and city in Ill. Also a kind of sand used in lab work.
Good luck to Hondo with the hip surgery. You'll do well.
Tschüß. (ADIEU in Hamburg)
Well. the first fill in this puzzle describes it, CINCH. Nothing unknown. I had to wait for perps to decide which ordinal number to use.
ReplyDeleteMy music teacher ex taught me with some musical terms like quaver that became crossword trivia.
quaver 1/8 note
demiquaver 1/16
demisemiquaver 1/32
hemidemisemiquaver 1/64
CSO to me, even spelled correctly at 52D
I heard much about feng shui 20-25 years ago, not so much lately. A prospective Chinese buyer for my house declined because the front door faced the wrong direction. Bad feng shui.
Hondo, sorry about your notebook. Mine contains everything. I would be lost without it.
I have been sick in bed since Thursday. This is the first day without a fever. My fevered brain could not cope with the weekend puzzles. I am getting dizzy now, back to bed.
p.s. I am still getting updates on map entries and we will have a mostly final posting soon.
ReplyDeletePlease add my name for TX. Thks
DeleteI loved the 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 theme.
ReplyDeleteI got the TROP and figured it was short for tropicana.
Didn't know the acronym TCB so thanks for the explanation.
CHIPPY is contentiousness? All i could think it meant was chipper as in cheerful.
-A very famous TCB logo on the tail of the Lisa Marie
ReplyDelete2D - Not Julie Andrews. “I Feel Pretty” is from “West Side Story”, sung by Maria. Carol Lawrence in the original Broadway production, Natalie Wood (dubbed by Marni Nixon) in the movie version.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know chippy but filled by crosses. Trop and Rahm were not in my balliwick but was able to suss it out . The clues with numbers as the answers were a cinch.
ReplyDeleteBoomer: Nice write-up. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHusker: Thank you for the "up-dated" Crossword Corner Map.
When I went through college 50 years ago I played an awful lot of pool.
(OK, I was a "Hustler" ... and yes I had my own "Cue" with a CUE CASE).
So that made it easier to get 41-a today.
Hope everyone is Safe and Sound.
I haven't caught the COVID 19 ... but since I live in the Tampa Bay area:
A Hot-Spot.
I wouldn't think of going outside without a Mask.
A "Toast-to-ALL" at Sunset.
Cheers!
Good Morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a solid start to the week, Mark. I did pretty well on this by chance, although SECOND CITY was a great start for this non-theme locator. My difficult entries came with hep from the crosses. Never heard CHIPPY as contentious. I usually see it as an outdated term for young gals.
Boomer, than you for the tour. Always a fine way to check on my work.
Hondo, the hip surgery will be a great relief to you.
Be well, and find some laughter in a sunny place today.
Mme Defarge, "young gals" of a certain persuasion. Merriam-Webster says floozy, hussy, jezebel. Haven't heard it in decades, though.
ReplyDeleteD-O: Umm,I was trying to be nice. . . . Notice I didn't say "young ladies?" The first place that come to my mind--which is where I heard it initially in High school: Death of a Salesman.
ReplyDeleteFIR. Nice, normal difficulty for a Monday although it did take roughly 20% longer than the quickest ones. I, too, did not know the definition of CHIPPY as used in the clue. I did know one other one. . .not fish and chips-related.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI sort of loped along slowly this morning on Matt's nicely constructed puzzle. After the FOURTH I started looking for the next numbers, so I actually got the theme today.
I tried CUE TIPS first and I thought about CHALK but they were wrong, so CUE CASE it was. As a "yute" I was not allowed to go into any of the pool halls in town because they were dens of iniquity where there was gambling and unsavory people using all kinds of tobacco and other forms of evil. I went anyway. I put a pool table in the first house I had which didn't thrill my new bride.
I don't know why, but I always try to spell the Canadian Capital OTToWA. Sorry CanadianEh!
D-O: Good luck with your surgery. My 79 year old BIL broke his hip last month and had the ball replaced. He is getting around very well and can walk up and down stairs and get in and out of the car with the help of a cane. His doctor just recommends that he doesn't play any soccer for a while, or ever.
I didn't know AHN, but I knew CHIPPY from watching many sports like football and basketball where there is a lot of smack talk and extracurricular pushing and shoving during and after the play.
HG: My MIL referred to HENS that didn't lay as dinner.
Another day in the 90's.
Have a great day everyone and like Tin, be safe and please wear your mask.
Perfect start to the week on this stormy Monday. Thanks Matt. For Cabernet holder I was looking for something bigger... cask, cellar. Oh! Glass. I can drink it!
ReplyDeleteI’d never heard of Phillip AHN but peeps insisted . I think of oregano as a pasta sauce herb, but BASIL is ok. I love it. Have two pots of it growing in my window.
I agree that DENIM can be stiff and uncomfortable unless washed to within an inch of its life. Is that why kids today wear torn and faded jeans?
Boomer thanks for the walk through.
HG, thanks again for the map and all you do!
Anon T, I sent you another email.. to gmail. Hope you get it.
ReplyDeleteA bit sticky for a Monday, but no big hiccups which ended in a FIR a tad longer than usual. One of my favorite movies of all time has to be The Hustler. I tell friends who haven't seen it that it is much more than just the game of pool. Great acting, great lines. It's about making the right choices, character strengths and weaknesses, overcoming doubts, and so on, and so on. Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason and others made a true classic.
ReplyDeleteA couple good games for the Twins. lets do this.
ReplyDeleteNice fun way to start the week. Typical Monday. Watched for perps where needed and FIR with no inkovers
ReplyDeleteQuestion whether "Geico" is really part of the GECKO answer?. Never heard of a CUECASE but what else would you call it I guess. (Also a carrier for cucumbers?)
The ordinal number sequence theme was obvious even to me. TROP was unknown
If your not an SNL addict you probably don't know Michael Che. Canada eh I waited for perps to stop any chance of inking in dollar instead of OTTAWA. 🇨🇦
Does any one use a water bed anymore or did the floors under them all finally give way?
Giving way to nonsense.....
The coop door was left open _____ the fox ate the chickens....HENS
I'll have the tuna sushi _____ is not available....IFEEL
Japanese families always _____ available for guests......KEEPSAKE.
Optical compact disc with data, CD ____....RAHM
Conks on the head....WAX
On to Mar's day...(mardí, martedì, martes)
Sorry Mars'
ReplyDeleteCute theme. FIR. Favorite answer was TEAM for "Dodgers or Cubs." *That* is the level of sports knowledge that I bring to the table! Hand up for stumbling over the contentious definition of CHIPPY. Thanks, Matt, Boomer, and fellow solvers!
ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteI haven't checked in since Friday and missed you all, especially the funny cracks (hello, Ray-O). It was a glorious weekend with my family. Saturday I spent the day at my sister's home with her, another sister, my nieces and their husbands and various children, some theirs, some visiting.
Sunday, my daughter and her family came to dinner so the afternoon was spent grocery shopping then cooking. The children have shot up at least a foot. But, then, everyone towers above me. It was a joy to see them all.
The puzzle was a CINCH! Thank you, Matt and Boomer! I got the two, four, six eight, ten theme. And I'm no longer an SNL fan but occasionally I watch it if the host is someone I like so Michael CHE is familiar to me.
However, TCB is not a term I know so almost had a DNF. BOPS saved me. I'm not even sure what TCB means.
CSO to Canadian Eh at OTTAWA. I also have the urge to spell it OTToWA. WAX corrected that!
DENIM is my "uniform" of choice in winter. After several wearings and washings, it is supremely comfortable.
I think I've mentioned before that I have both BASIL and oregano plants growing in my patio. Rosemary, too. Right now all plants are under stress from the extreme heat.
I hope you all have had a safe and healthy weekend.
Gary, thank you for updating the map.
Hondo, good wishes on your surgery; everyone I know who has experienced it, has had a good outcome. I'm sure you will, too.
Enjoy the day, everyone!
A nice easy Monday outing. Thanks, Matt, for a little diversion from the woes of the age and thanks, Boomer, for your always-liked essay. FIR in something under 10 minutes. Not sure how much under since the exact starting time wasn’t noted.
ReplyDeleteRandom thoughts:
For someone who has lived in the Chicago area for over 40 years, RAHM Emanuel was a gimme.
I wanted some form of “inset” instead of AREA MAP and was slow to quit looking for that connection.
I thought I didn’t know Philip AHN until I saw his picture.
I’ve long known (and chuckled at) the terms quaver, semiquaver, etc (and laughed at a few of them—hello, hemidemisemiquaver), but never knew they applied to eighth, sixteenth, etc notes.
CHIPPY mostly filled in with perps before I got to it, but when I did get there I didn’t have any problems with it as clued.
At least for a change CHE was clued as something other than a 60’s guerrilla.
Mask up and stay well.
Lucina: TCB—Taking Care of Business. Title of a song by Bachmann Turner Overdrive, the acronym has taken on a life of its own.
ReplyDeleteHi All!
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt for a fine Monday puzzle. Thanks Boomer for a fine'r Monday review.
WO: N/A
ESPs: ERBE, AHN, TROP, CHIPPY(?)
Fav: Even though it's a themer, I'm going w/ SECOND CITY. So much comedy talent came out of there.*
Good luck w/ the hip Hondo.
YR - DW's Vietnamese friend advised her not to get this (DW's "dream") house. Said the Fung Shui was all wrong and money would flow out the front door.
I could have told her that; it has a pool. And pool is a FOUR-letter word :-)
//hope you get better soon
Swamp - I have nothing from you in any of my inboxen.
Lucina - lots of water - Basil can take the heat but not the dry.
I have so much volunteer BASIL that I didn't need to buy plants. Pop (and Gramps) always said to put it around the tomatoes to protect them (I assume from insects).
Last week I made pesto (with grilled chicken) over angel-hair**. I could probably make pesto 2x a week and still not run out of BASIL.
Ray-O: Optical disk with foul-mouthed data... :-)
Michael CHE co-hosts SNL w/ Colin Jost. I'm currently reading Jost's A Very Punchable Face.
//Ray-O: If you're a fan, I recommend it. The chapter on 9/11 is intense (his mom was with NYFD)
Somebody's gotta BTO's TCB [I love that hype man! LOL!]
Cheers, -T
*Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mike Myers, Dave Foley, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Kevin McDonald, Amy Sedaris... I'm sure there's more
**I found a company out of Chicago that imports directly from Italy and they had it!
Nice way to start the week. Thanks, Matt, for the puzzle, and thanks, Boomer, for the tour. Keep your head down and follow through!
ReplyDeleteHondo, best of luck with your surgery. I had both my hips replaced, 4 years apart, and I continued to ski for many years. No limp ever and no pain. Just follow orders and do your PT, and you will be thrilled with the result.
ReplyDeleteThis Monday grid filled quickly.
No write-overs today.
Okay....WATERBEDS....bought one 47 years ago, am now on my 3rd..sold the first one for a much nicer one, gave that to my son when I bought a complete bedroom set 10 years ago. Am still sleeping on that one.
So I’ve been sleeping on water for 47 years. I also have cats. There has been no issue there, they love the heated bed (they’re cats!) but no claw issues, I keep a mattress pad on top..
And nothing has ever gone through a ceiling - for an upper floor - or into the basement for a main floor. Because construction standards on floor loads will not allow that...if your refrigerator doesn’t cause an issue neither will a waterbed. Fridges are heavier per sq ft.
THE HUSTLER....a great film along with the sequel THE COLOR OF MONEY.
Stay Safe, Mask Up, see you tomorrow.
Synonyms for CHIPPY:
ReplyDeleteaggressive, agonistic, argumentative, assaultive, bellicose, belligerent, brawly, combative, confrontational, contentious, discordant, disputatious, feisty, gladiatorial, militant, pugnacious, quarrelsome, scrappy, truculent, warlike
I did not know "CHIPPY" in this usage; a new learning.
Just returned from SYR with BH after a Dr's visit. Treated ourselves to lunch at the local Olive Garden. Had delicious Pasta e Fagioli, all you can eat.
Good afternoon, everyone! I enjoyed both this (almost) CINCH of a puzzle from Matt and Boomer’s entertaining write up. Great start to the week.
ReplyDeleteA pretty smooth ride from north to south, with just a couple of slow-downs. The fun numbers theme became evident early on. I’ll OWN UP to needing perp help to correctly spell OTTAWA (hi, Canadian Eh!) and Feng SHUI. CHIPPY is a new term for me; something to do with having a chip on one’s shoulder? Don’t figure my lone tomato plant counts as much of a CROP, but I’m sure looking forward to having some fresh off the vine this summer. Thanks for the tip about planting basil around tomato plants, Anon -T.
Best of luck with the hip surgery, Hondo! Speaking from experience, it can make a huge difference in how you feel. Also, being diligent with any recommended physical therapy routine is well worth the time and effort.
Have a wonderful day!
Thanks for the literary tip AnonT. Your link wouldn't open for me so I LIU but that title alone make me want to read it. You probably know that the oft troubled SNLer Pete Davidson's fireman father died as a 9/11 first responder.
ReplyDeleteWendy your comment about hip replacement reminded me of a take on the old joke...
ReplyDeletePt: "Doctor, if I have my hips replaced will I be able to ski?"
Doc: "After some rehab I don't see why not"
Pt: "Doctor that's wonderful news. I've never skied before!!"
Good luck Hondo I'm sure you'll do great
Ray-O: Sorry I messed up the link; I was in a meeting & one can't truly multi-task. :-)
ReplyDeleteAfter Eldest leaves next week, I plan to watch Davidson's King of Staten Isle [Trailer].
And just another bit of trivia - Pete & John Mulaney are good friends.
Cheers, -T
Hi Everyone:
ReplyDeleteMy nice, long, original post was lost and I don’t have the energy to reconstruct it. So, I’ll just say thanks to Matt for the puzzle and Boomer for the expo, both being the highlight of my day.
YR, feel better soon! 💐🌸🌷🌹🌺🌼🌻
Hondo, best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. When are you having the surgery?
Stay safe, everyone.
Anon T. thanks for the boost. I needed that. I have been flat on my back for days. Still weak and dizzy, but today for the first time in days I enjoyed several phone calls that lasted more than a minute and am finally up to reading a book. Brighter days are coming.
ReplyDeleteKathryn (not Herbe)
Gary, your map is a beauty, really spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThe multi-color approach is so much nicer than the usual map display.
Hasn't it been worked out mathematically that only three (or four?) colors are needed--in order to separate any number of areas (states) from each other?
I much prefer your way.
Hard to believe we don't have any Cornerites in Nevada, or Washington state.
Fun pzl today. I admit to missing the THIRD DEGREE, the FIFTH AMENDMENT, etc. but we can't have everything.
Can we?
Please accept my apologies too, CanadianEh!. Add me to the list of those who needed a perp to be sure of the middle vowel in OTTAWA. Shame on us!

Hi everybody,
ReplyDeleteHas there ever been a melody as pretty and emotional as Amazing Grace? Maybe Danny Boy?
~ Mind how you go...
& I thought the answer is 42 was mind blowing!...
ReplyDeleteFeng Shui?
I liked this puzzle. Some of the answers I didn't even see because they were already filled in. I guess if a constructor needs lots of "S"s fill like SSTS and SSRS come in real handy. It starting to look as if ETSY is becoming a crossword staple. I always thought an LP is what is encased IN an album, not the album itself, but I have learned. So, is, say, Wagner's Das Rheingold opera, which takes up 2 CDs, one album or two?
ReplyDeleteI wonder, do the British really like their people to be "old"? "I say, old chap..." "How are you, old bean?" "She's a fine old girl."
Speaking of the British, if what I have seen in TV shows such as "Inspector Morse" and "Inspector Lewis" and others, a CHIPPY is a place to buy chips.
Good wishes to you all. Please continue to stay far away from unmasked persons.
Those are great, Bill G. Maybe just a little tired from over-use?
ReplyDeleteHow about Va, pensiero?

Marvelous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Matt & Boomer.
ReplyDeleteI FIRed but not without some P&P. After lurking on the weekend, my tired grandma brain took longer than usual for a Monday. The cross of TROP, RAHM (both unknown) and SHOT was the last to fill. But I did get the number theme.
Since I still seem to be alone in the Great White North on Husker Gary's map (where are you fellow Canadian LA CW solvers??), I will take the CSO for OTTAWA. (Thanks for the new map Husker G)
Plus, some partial CSOs for TCB (Bachman, Turner, Overdrive were a Canadian band out of Winnipeg) (thanks for the link AnonT!), and SECOND CITY (which did start as a Chicago-based improv group, but also has training and live theatres in Toronto and Hollywood). I remember attending a Second City live performance when I was at university. Some well-known actors came out of the Toronto troupe, including John Candy, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas (known as Bob & Doug Mackenzie from the Great White North) Eugene Levy and Catharine O'Hara (are you Americans seeing the latter in Schitt's Creek??)
I noted Kung Fu and Feng Shui, plus SLR, SSTS, SSRS. There were a lot of 3 letter words today.
Yes Boomer, those Blue Jays were a team without a home for a few days until Buffalo agreed to host them. Sahlen Field (which is their triple-A affiliate's stadium) needs upgrades, and first home game there will not be until August 11. Actually it was not the MLB that was scared off by the USA Covid outbreak; the Blue Jays were denied permission to play at Rogers Centre in Toronto by the federal government (OTTAWA!!) due to the constant travel between that Canada-U.S. border. (We have a 14 day quarantine period for all people crossing that border, which is still essentially closed to non-Canadians.)
Ray'o - I wondered about the Geiko GECKO too.
CHIPPY as clued was a CINCH for this hockey mom.
Hope you feel better soon, YR.
Best wishes for the upcoming surgery, Hondo.
Wishing you all a great day.
I, too, never seem to remember if that second vowel in Ottawa is an O or an A. But once it's down to two letters out of twenty-six the correct answer usually arrives pretty quickly.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gary, for updating the update.
Glad you're feeling somewhat better, Yellowrocks.
Ray O', wasn't that joke originally about a piano? I actually do ski with a good friend who has had a hip replacement although he was an accomplished skier before the procedure.
Jayce ~
ReplyDeleteWell observed, Ol' Man!
I think Brits--and a few Yanks--use "old" in the sense of "well worn," "familiar," "reliable," and "comfortable."

Hondo, good luck on your hip surgery. I have seen it work wonders keeping square dancers sashaying until Covid shut us down. I hope it works as well for you. I am so glad I had myu knees replaced.
ReplyDeleteMal Man...I found this online, (when I had a cervical laminectomy years ago I was tempted to ask the neurosurgeon if I could play the violin after the procedure....you know the rest of the joke.)
ReplyDeleteoriginal piano joke
Something went wrong with the link...lol
ReplyDeleteRay - O & M.M. ~Referring to replacing hips and skiing vs. an old piano-playing gag...
ReplyDeleteI actually witnessed a situation, a serious one, in which the piano version came up.
Only it wasn't a joke.
An apprentice was working w/o permission in our scene shop when he sliced off two fingers. I went to the hospital to check on him. His father was there too, trying to provide some consolation.
At one point he said, "And with good rehab you can play the piano."
"But Dad," the kid said, "I don't play the piano."
It wasn't funny. His dad had meant to encourage him by saying something like "Even some pianists have been able to return to work," but he mis-spoke.
Still, Life imitates Art.

I'll put one more spin on the old joke. While in high school wood shop class I managed to largely remove the tips of my left hand middle and ring fingers in a wood jointer. (I wouldn't recommend it, and my teacher nearly fainted when I showed him the damage). After the doctor repaired the damage with ~40 stitches I asked the classic question about the piano. He was completely deadpan in the answer: "That depends....could you play piano before?" Didn't miss a beat and didn't crack a smile. I told him I could, and he then smiled and answered in the affirmative.
ReplyDeleteTrue story. It's also worth noting that same doctor gave me over 400 stitches in my scalp after a car wreck a few years later. We became friends...
Good luck with the hip surgery Skip. It'll be a relief.
Boomer, remember when golf balls "smiled". I see Nicklaus wants the PGA to do something about the high velocity balls*. Are you listening, Bryson?
ReplyDelete33A? Rollie wouldn't fit. I see johnE beat me to it
Why can NHL and NBA play in Canada but MLB cannot? Eh?
HMM, I can't get my doctor to talk at all
OMK, not to speak of "The Seven Deadly Sins"
Methinks BillG was watching the service for Lewis. And the rendition of Amazing Grace was truly amazing, methinks.
In the IT world of the 90s "Young" was a condescending term.

Also, Hondo, your cellphone service provider may be able to track the phone through GPS. If it's still in the ON State. Depends on time and battery. They also could track the history of it.
ReplyDeletePhil was tracking Betsy (user has to provide OK) and it indicated last seen at Mall. Fortunately, she still had it.
Our new place west of Ocala has bad cell service (TMobile)

Hi, everybody. WEES – a pretty user-friendly Monday puzzle, with just a skosh of crunch tossed in to keep us on our toes. Only needed a couple of perps (AHN, ETSY, ERBE), and I've never heard any use of CHIPPY. Thanks Matt and Boomer!
ReplyDeleteWill SOMEBODY please shoot EKE and put it (and me) out of our misery??? It offends me more than all of the names put together!
Hondo, the two most important things about hip replacement surgery (gleaned from when my dad had his):
1. When they wheeled him into the room, the surgeon gave him a black magic marker and told him to put an “X” on the hip that is being replaced. Put the “”X” on the correct hip!!!
2. Way too soon after you come to again, the torturers are going to show up to start you on your "rehab" (their word, not mine) exercises. The quality and speed of your recovery will be directly proportional to how well you do what they tell you to do. (End of sermon.) GOOD LUCK!!!
I love it when the performers break the FOURTH WALL!
SLR – No change since the last time we had this clue. My cameras are still mad at me because we aren’t out committing photography. Meanwhile, my spreadsheet listing places to shoot just keeps getting longer, and NOTHING IS GETTING CROSSED OFF!
OK, enough TCB! Later….
I say, Keith Ol'Man, you've hit the nail on the head. Could you, would you, tell us a bit about your experiences regarding the FOURTH WALL?
ReplyDeleteHello everyone. I have been “lurking” for a few years. I usually work the Thur-Fri-Sat puzzles but since Covid-19 started, have been working more. I emailed Husker Gary to include me on the map - Gaspasser from OK. I am a retired anesthesiologist and yes, have heard the piano joke many times. I hope everyone is staying safe in this time of Covid-19.
ReplyDeleteToday’s fill was fairly easy - didn’t know TCB but got it from the other fills.
Heavy rain this afternoon and HUMID!!
Gaspasser
HG,
ReplyDeleteSorry If I have not praised your Map recently,
It is just kinda hard to Crow about your location when you
are from New Jersey...
Gaspasser - where(ish - we don't need lat|long) in OK? I lived in Norman for 5 years, did my masters at OU (DW did her PhD) while I worked at TFAB in OKC.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to The Corner.
AveJoe - Oy! Remember my mandoline accident? I feel ya, bro! (still can't play the piano :-))
Jayce - that would be too fun for a thespian to tale his best FOURTH WALL bust-out.
OMK, you game?
Cheers, -T
WC@5:05 - re "Why can NHL and NBA play in Canada but MLB cannot? Eh?"
ReplyDeleteNHL has created two hub cities, Edmonton (for Western Conference) and Toronto (for Eastern Conference), where all the games will be played. The federal government (OTTAWA) approved the NHL's proposal of a cohort quarantine that would keep players separate from the general public, rather than require players to isolate individually for the two-week period.
Today, the players settled into the designated (and totally separated from the public) hotels for the completion of the 2019-20 season. (Apparently, no player tested positive for COVID-19 over the final week of training camps, July 18-25.)
Players on teams that reach the Stanley Cup finals could remain in this bubble until October. Now that's dedication to the sport!!
NHLHubCityBubbles
The Toronto Raptors are playing in the Disney bubble in Orlando Florida. Some of them trained in Toronto under very strict guidelines, but all are now in Florida. Like the NHL teams, they may be in the Disney bubble for 3 months.
RaptorsInFlorida
The MLB plan was rejected by OTTAWA because it involved too much travel and border-crossing without quarantine. It did not help that Covid-19 numbers were increasing rapidly in MLB locations. And that was more than a week ago. Today's news of Covid-19 cases on Marlins and postponement of MLB games today reinforce the wisdom of that decision in the mind of this (and probably most) Canadians.
Apparently, the government is willing to restart plans if the Blue Jays make the playoffs and the risk of the virus spreading has diminished.

Frank Joseph Zamboni died on this day in 1988. Did Boomer know that, or is an eerie coincidence?
ReplyDeleteIt was another eerie coincidence that Regis Philbin was a celebrity contestant on the Jeopardy show that was taken out of the vault and scheduled for tonight (the first weekday program after Regis' death).

ReplyDeleteDash T, sidebar. Headed your way.
ReplyDeleteHondo and D-O: Sorry I messed up this morning when I wished D-O a good recovery instead of Hondo. I guess I looked at the name after Hondo's post.
Hondo, I hope all goes well.
YR: thinking a big internet hug for you and hoping you feel more chipper soon. I had noticed you weren't posting. Do you think it is corona virus?
ReplyDeleteI'm living with cold water for the past week. Don't know if it is a defective water heater or the gas line into my house. Reluctant to get strange men with germs out to see about it.
YR:
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for good health! Do you know what is causing your symptoms?
