  1. Good to see you this morning Boomer. I thought the Vikings loss yesterday was solely the product of the worst coaching job in many years in the NFL. They had the Seahawks down with little time left and were up by 6 (bad enough that it was only 6 because of a failed 2pt. try early in the game) on the Seahawk 6-yard line. Instead of kicking a field goal to go up by 9, they run a 4th down play that had little chance. ARRRGH. I am not a Pete Carroll fan.

Just for fun, Boomer, here are the names of all the Hyundai models LINK .

Also, the HBO reference is to a "NEW" Perry Mason with an actor who has not inspired me to watch. HBO PERRY MASON 2020.

I enjoyed the write-up and how you weave all of your thoughts together and I bet you are among the few who can quote a COWSILLS song.

  3. Good morning!

Quick, but not quite a speed run; Wite-Out free. Found all the tools without needing the reveal. Thanx, BV, GG, and Boomer. (Have you picked out your Santa Fe?)

MOC: I've got a pair I use as slippers. I can step right into 'em at the side of the bed.

AM FM: Cars no longer come with CD players. My car has AM, FM, Sirius XM, and a USB port. It came with a year of free Sirius. During that year I listened a total of 4 hours. Gone now.

AVIS: We rented an AWD SUV in Las Vegas to drive to Death Valley. When we returned it, they charged extra because we got it dirty. Spoil sports.

EBAN: Speaking of banning E, back in '39 Ernest Vincent wrote Gadsby with did not include the letter E. I wonder if the author's name was listed as RNST VINCNT.

HBO: All of the old Raymond Burr Perry Mason episodes are available on-demand at CBS All Access. (TTP, I also found all of the Aerial America episodes there.) I've been watching the early seasons of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone.

  6. Thanks Bruce and Gail for a fine puzzle. Thanks Boomer for an interesting expo.
Yes, many sports bars are very loud. I am annoyed with restaurants that play music so loudly your mouth has to be within six inches of your companion's ear to shout a conversation. Even when I am alone I find the music annoying. One time I walked out without ordering and never returned.
I remember when cars had no CD or tape capability. Until the 50's there was only AM radio. The used 2017 Corolla I just purchased still has CD.
Azera was the only unfamiliar fill for me.
BTW, yesterday's YUGIOH seemed odd to me. Except for N, all Japanese words end with a vowel sound.

  7. A BIG thank you to Lemonade who shared his thoughts with my thoughts. I have to admit that I dislike Sunday night football because my bedtime does not agree with those hours. I fell asleep about 20 minutes into the game with the Vikings leading 10-0. Silly me, I thought they might have had a chance to win. I am not sure if the Cowsills ever had more than one hit song. But I always wondered who named their group. Well, Minnesota is looking at a high of 66 today so it looks like I am off to the golf course. Could be the last time until April.

  9. Hola!

A nice one from Gail and Bruce! The NW baffled me for too long because I was looking for call letters until AMFM emerged. Of course!

Two French words crossing, ROI/MEDOC added to the bewilderment though I knew ROI.

VIETNAM spelled out was a surprise; often it's just NAM.

Nick Nolte was superb in The Prince of Tides.

    Well done, Boomer! Thank you.

I hope your day is amazing, everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good Morning:

Nothing like a Gail and Bruce puzzle to brighten a very gloomy October day in the great Northeast! This was a fun and fast solve with just two unknowns, Azera and Dina, and only one w/o, Race/Face. There were plenty of cute duos, to boot: Lug crossing Lag, Leer crossing Sneer, Hive/Nest, Bar/Ale, Tees/Top, and the trifecta of Medoc/Meds/Moc. Another eye-catcher was the symmetrical descending entries of Eland, Emeril, Erica. Lots of goodies to enjoy!

Thanks, Bruce and Gail, for a satisfying solve and thanks, Boomer, for your upbeat and humorous contribution of additional brightness to my day. You were in extra fine fettle today.

Lucina @ 7:52 ~ I heartily second your assessment of Nick Nolte in The Prince of Tides. He was the perfect choice for the Tom Wingo role. That was one of my favorite movies and books. In fact, it’s one of only a few books that I enjoyed so much that I read a second time. (I loved all of Pat Conroy’s work except for South of Broad). Nick Nolte was also outstanding in the remake of Cape Fear opposite a very creepy Robert DeNiro. As Boomer mentioned, Nolte did go off the rails in his personal life, but I think he’s back on track now.

    Have a great day.

  11. Good morning everyone.

Easy (mostly) Monday. Had the same experience as Lucina in the NW. Got ROI instantly, but had to wait for MEDOC to come into focus. Not knowing AZERA didn't help. Easy theme; but not needed for the solve.
NOLA - We ate there in August of 2000. A great meal with excellent service and a very courteous staff.
MOC - My only footware at home. I get a new pair from L.L. Bean every 2 years.

  12. Fast and fun Monday - but with a bit of crunchiness which added to the fun!
I noted the TOOLs on the end - but I noticed that the beginnings of most of the theme answers (READ ME didn't work) worked with BOX: FRUIT BOX, MAIL BOX, FIRE BOX!

Interesting reading about "The Cowsills" - I didn't realize that the Partridge Family TV show was based on their lives as a family pop singing group. Their big hit was "Hair" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeXQUQge1PY In medical school we had a variety show and some of did a parody of that song called "Bugs" which was all about microbiology- Earworm for today!

Thanks Boomer - Bruce & Gail!

  13. Fun Monday puzzle from Gail & Bruce. AZERA unknown. Not a wine drinker, but MEDOC surfaced from some unknown part of my gray matter. Did not catch the theme, but FIR.

No BMX for me. Just a bicycle of that era, a one speed Schwinn.

Lemonade, I wonder if anyone from USC (NCAA probation to big fat pro coaching contract) could be a Pete Carroll fan. USC is not alone. There are many other coaches and alums that caused NCAA penalties.

    Thank you Boomer. Great review.

  15. FIR today, though I puzzled over ZEROG and AZERA. I first tried an L but that didn't work. My other w/o's were rACE/FACE and ALE/ipo/ALE. Before checking perps, I was putting my TOOLs in a bag and (channeling C-Eh) thought OCHre at first. Not the prettiest grid but ultimately done right. Also saw the theme endings. Thanks to Bruce and Gail for Monday fun. And thanks to Boomer for continuing the enjoyment!

We haven't put much mileage on our cars for years now so our present 2001 Honda has a CD player and the 1989 Toyota we gave away four years ago only had a radio. Yes, we get attached to our cars.

  19. 24D TEX. The running joke back in '59 was "Stop yer whining Texas, or we'll cut Alaska in half and you'll be the THIRD largest State!". 1D AMFM, re CDs in the car, I only listen to them out of state. My FM radio is always pinned to Baltimore station WBJC (91.5FM), which is, hands down, the best classical station in the WORLD. In addition to FM broadcasts, they also stream over the internet (see WBJC.com). They are largely self supporting and routinely receive donations from as far away as Israel and Australia. Great DJ's (most of whom are musicians) and great music. I've been listening to them for over 50 years. Right now I'm listening to Johann Strauss' Emperor Waltz.

  20. FIW due to not being able to figure out AZERA - I insisted on Alera, so Lerog made no sense. Oh well, the rest of the puzzle filled fairly easily, and the clues were interesting and a bit crunchy for a Monday.

Lucina and IM, I also loved Prince of Tides. Pat Conroy wrote so beautifully, I often read some sentences a second time just for the pleasure of enjoying them again.

Thank you, Bruce and Gail for a nice start to the week. Thank you, Boomer, for always keeping it light.

  21. Saturday's disaster has infected Monday's puzzle. (should have worn a mask). Usually error or near-error free but actually FIW. Had pMX crossed with pOLE instead of BMX...BOLE (?).... Kicking partner: screaming? Too long....MEDOC popped into my head from some deep cerebral CAVERN.

Mentioned before that I enjoyed the HBO series "Perry Mason": which tells his back story and evolution from a scruffy private eye, to attorney. How he comes to meet Della Street, Hamilton Burger, Paul Drake. (Wonder what ERLE would think?)

We have a 30 year old 36 inch TV SET (the largest I believe you could buy at the time). DW watches it every day. The set fits into a 6ft high entertainment center which will not accomodate a modern wide screen TV. So once the TV goes so goes this piece of enormous outdated furniture. A 1990's antique. Like an 1920's icebox

    Not immune yet....

Hard to find car rental agent:..."rara ____ "....AVIS
    Unagi country..... ELAND

  22. Lemony....I realize it was late, but they were up by 5, 26-21, not 6. If they had been up by 6 then the FG would have put them up by 9. But the Viking coach was so afraid of Wilson that even an 8 point lead wasn’t enough, so he went for it (????) anyway. Dumb for sure, and a statement to his defense....”you guys stink”. I would have kicked the FG and made them go for the TD...which they got...AND the 2 pointer...which they went for and failed.

And is this Monday? I thought the grid rather crunchy for the day despite getting the solve.

  23. Also...Perry Mason...there is actually a new series starring Matthew Rhys on HBO.

  24. FIW on a Monday. I tried to make it tougher by first solving all the 3 letter answers without using any perp help. i.e., based on the clue alone. Then the four letter answers using only the clues and only perp letters filled in by the 3 letter words. Then the 5s, and then the 6s etc.

Yes, doing so can make easier puzzles a bit harder to solve by strictly following those rules.

That's not what did me in. It was typos. Yes, two of them. Never noticed that I had CAVERm / mOLTE and LrER.

In disgust, and after watching the weather forecast, I decided I'd better get outside and mulch the leaves under the maple tree before the rains came in. Had a pile that was more or less about 1 foot deep, 20 feet long and 20 feet wide. I just blow the newly fallen leaves back under the tree daily, or they'll all end up in the garage, and I've learned they are much easier to mulch when dry than when wet.

That job is done, and a load of laundry is in the dryer. Now what to do ? Still not going anywhere. Just trying to stay busy and keep my mind off of other things.

Oh well. Fun write up, Boomer. Hope you enjoyed your golfing today. Thank you, Gail and Bruce. Your puzzles are always so clean.

Four of the children of one of my nieces are highly involved in BMX cycling. They have been since they could ride and have literally dozens of trophies they've won. They travel throughout the country to participate and yes, the bikes are very expensive. It's the choice of my niece's husband though we, the rest of the family, believe it's dangerous and some bones have been broken. The boys especially love it. Even the two girls ride.

  31. Nice puzzle from Bruce and Gail, but was a little crunchy for a Monday.

Boomer's tour through the grid was enjoyable.

DW watches all of the old Perry Mason reruns on ME TV every day even though we've seen most of the episodes many times over. He never loses and the one time he did, he really didn't.

The Oscar winner was going to be Marissa Tomei or Joe Pesci, so I put in the I and waited for perps to figure out which one they wanted today. PESCI it was. I still think that "My Cousin Vinny" is a classic.

I didn't know the Hyundai sedan, but I had the Z from ZERO G, so I let perps fill the rest of it in. Perps were very helpful today.

It was interesting that the Villain's Look met up at the R in SNEER and LEER.

I came down with what I determined was a sinus infection, but since I recently had been in a group gathering I was concerned that it could be Covid19. I went to the local Geisinger clinic yesterday and got a Covid Test. The results just came back as NEGATIVE. Takes a load off of my mind. This is the first time that I was happy to have a sinus infection. I still feel like crap with the sinus infection, but apparently that's all it is.

Be safe everyone and please wear your masks.

    ReplyDelete
  32. OMK, depends on how you define "unusually dirty." It never rained on our trip, so there was no mud, but Death Valley is very dusty. The dust managed to get everywhere...inside and out. When customers want an AWD SUV, I think the rental companies should expect that it will probably be driven off-road.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Gail and Bruce and Boomer!

It was a VERY EASY puzzle for me, until 1A! I actually had a Hyundai back in the last century, but it came to a very unfortunate demise, and I haven’t wanted one since then, so I have no idea what the names of their models are.

The “E” in AZERA/EDUCE was my last fill, because I fell into a MOO for MOC trap and barely escaped it. Since I refused to take a FIW or DNF on a Monday puzzle, I stared at it long enough to see my error. Once I fixed MOC, the “E” was my most logical guess.

The theme fills were easy, and they fell first.

“My Cousin Vinnie” is one of my favorite movies. It is one of those movies where it is difficult to decide who gave the best performance.

I didn’t know all of the names, but the perps once again took care of them.

Boomer, our nuns’ “sneers” were a foot long and carried in their right hands!

I can’t remember when I visited my last sports bar, but I can assure you not being able to hear the talking heads was always a good thing! My hearing ain’t so good these days, so I don’t have to listen to them. Closed captioning has helped my reading speed immensely, though.

So, I wasn’t the only one who had trouble with Saturday’s and Sunday’s puzzles. I still haven’t finished them.

    Later….

oc4beach, I sympathize with your sinus infection worry. For months I felt below par and had several days of mild temp. rises every month from January through about June. I really worried unnecessarily about Covid 19. Antibiotics were only partially effective. When I used a netipot for two months the infection was gone. I can fully see how miserable you are. I am surprised how long lasting sinusitis is. Could several weeks of nasal flush help you?
Now I have severe seasonal allergies, but that is far better than sinusitis.
Many potential buyers for my house seem interested but none have jumped at the bait so far. Only four days on the market.
These days one day of downsizing takes me three days. I get very tired and need to rest my back often. Dad used to say, "Getting old is not for sissies."
Medoc was a gimme. I have never tasted it, but I find its name amusing and memorable.

  37. Dunno if this is true but it made me smile:

After every flight, UPS pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet" which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS pilots ("P") and solutions recorded ("S") by maintenance engineers:

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

    P: Something loose in cockpit
    S: Something tightened in cockpit

    P: Dead bugs on windshield.
    S: Live bugs on back-order.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
    S: Evidence removed.

    P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.

P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

    P: Suspected crack in windshield.
    S: Suspect you're right.

    P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

    P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to: straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

    P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

    P: Mouse in cockpit.
    S: Cat installed.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.

  39. Anon T @ 5:25. My parents are probably famous for being the last people in the US to finally buy a color TV Set. Dad had a series of excuses like "they aren't perfected yet" (partially true for a while) ultimately "the color hurts my eyes"

This went along with the frequent anouncement "the trouble with you kids is you didn't grow up in "the depression". Translation: you don't throw away a perfectly good functioning black and white TV.

  40. I messed up my link.

Ray-O: Paternal grandfather would find a broken lighter (among other useful things) on his walks, take it home, remove the flint and put it in a baby-jar. "Those people wasting good flints..." and "I'll never not have a flint" would be things he'd say.

Bill G - I LOL'd at "Evidence removed," "Live bugs on backorder," and "Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics." Thanks.

    Cheers, -T

  41. FLN I suspect Doyle was using Holmes to pass secret information and the Secret service caught on and shut him down.

I thought there was a hundai ALERA. If Gail etal want to stump us on a Monday she won. Perhaps if I'd put the letters into the online xword I could have figured it out. I shoulda tried harder.* I see Wendy was with me.

*Oh, AVIS? Who pays retail on car rental?

VIETNAM? A hellava place (The Phu-Bai song)

I can't blame Bruce and Gail for a Wednesday xword on a Monday. I'll have words with Mr S when he skulks back. LEDOG indeed. I see ALERA is a brokerage outfit.

Ps, three FIW in a row

  43. -T and YR: Thanks for your good thoughts.

YR: I hope your place sells quickly for a really good price. Back here (central PA) they are saying it is a very good sellers market.

  44. WC - - I guessed Monarch Butterfly. Don't know what else it would be. I'm surprised all three missed it. Could've been just a brain fart.

  47. Late tonight after Canadian Thanksgiving and COVID backyard turkey.
I turned to this CW for relaxation and a chance to sit down after a busy day. 1A was not an auspicious start. DH told me that Alero was a GM product and definitely not correct . . . but he could only think of 6 letter Hyundai sedans.
I finished the rest of the CW and came back to NW Natick corner. (I didn’t know MEDOC and could not parse ZERO G out of ROG. . . and Gravity wouldn't fit.)
But I see that others had the same problems, and it wasn’t just my tired brain on a Monday.
Anyway, thanks for the fun, Bruce and Gail., and Boomer (yes, I like Canada Dry too).

I’ll take a partial CSO at 55D, although I was on the other side of of the prescribing triangle.
Atl Granny - I LOLed to see that you were “channeling me” with Ochres. OCHERS actually filled in with perps and I did not see it; it would have created a nose- wrinkle!

Spitzboov - yes, I answered correctly. I have seen those monarchs migrating through Pt. Pelee.

    Good evening to you all.

  48. Jeopardy airs here at 7:30. I guess that is two hours earlier in the east coast. Could we please have a discussion about it much later? I laughed out loud at "cockroaches." They certainly are not exclusive to any place nor do they migrate.

  50. Darn it.
I forgot to wish you, C, Eh!, a Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving. And! it's on my work calendar (from when we had a Calgary office).

Happy un-Thanksgiving. The lawn feast sounded nice.

WC - I didn't watch Jeopardy!. The video link came in from Twitter.

Edward-D: Tell us more about yourself. FAA chief? You gotta have some fun stories.

    Cheers, -T
