Boomer here. Another BAG (Bruce and Gail) treat. It's Bruce's theme idea, as his name is first in the byline.
Okay, pulled pork! It's a very tasty military meal, served in mess halls throughout the country. Maybe one of the reasons the hall is named mess. Here in Minnesota, we received some wet snow followed by a few inches of lighter snow blown by 35 MPH winds. C.C. and I will be staying home for a while.
A little news for our puzzlers. Leah Remini (Formerly of "King of Queens" sit com) is scheduled to host a new show called "People Puzzlers" on the game show channel (my DTV 233) beginning Monday January 18 I believe at 5:00 PM - Central Time. No, I am not being paid for this commercial.

Boomer
Good morning Cornerites.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bruce Venzke and Gail Grabowski for your enjoyable Monday CW.
Carol and I FIR in 25:18 min.
Thank you Boomer for your excellent review.

LIVIA and DEREK lived in Texas.
ReplyDeleteThey vowed to end the battle of the SEXES.
The rules they'd DEREG,
Agreed neither need beg,
But how in Texas they did it perplexes!
Hrump. Five themers all end with K, but no two of them rhyme. How's a poet supposed to work with that, huh?
A comma is a PUNCTUATION MARK,
To a BREAK for breath it harks.
Not long enough to sip a FLASK,
Or a POWER SNACK, not EVEN fast,
Or chase a PORKER across a park!
{A, C+.}
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteGuess Gail (and Bruce) had at least one more in the queue. Nice. Managed to get the theme for about the second time this year. Must've read the clue for 5D at least three times and still didn't understand it. Got DPS (Department of Public Safety) OK, though. DEREG was slow in coming and hard to parse, but it was nicely paired with DEREK. Still, finished in good Monday time, so life is good. Thanx Bruce, the late Gail, and Boomer.
Fun day -- root canal scheduled. What could be better?
It was a rare finish in under 4 minutes for me (3:57). Livia was unknown.
ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteMonday fun day from Bruce and the late Gail who can still entertain us.
No idea about RUPP Arena or DPS but both emerged with perps.
CSO to Big Easy.
Speaking of battle of the SEXES, if anyone sees Jeopardy early please don't reveal the guest host who I believe will be different every week. It doesn't air here until 7:30 P.M. and I want to be surprised.
Seeing ROALD Dahl again and being reminded of his creativity is a treat.
Back to bed for me. Make the most of Monday, everyone and happy MLK Day!
Agree with Boomer about the Liberty ads. Everything about them is bad. Guess Liberty didn’t pay for more than they needed.
ReplyDeleteFIR but it took a while to see GO KART (Hi, D-O) and DEREG. Double Plays didn't help me there. A couple of other spots were slow to come to mind. I read the clue for 36A as boat not boot and EZIO Pinza is locked in my brain as Enzio Piza. Oops! Also was thinking FAuN, like fauna, I guess, rather than FAWN, which I associated with the verb meaning to fawn over. Any connection do you suppose? Must LIU. Anyway, I kept trying letters and finally FIR. Thanks for confirming that, Boomer. Stay warm and safe. Nice to see another Gail puzzle. Thanks also to Bruce for a special Monday puzzle with a tasty theme. I kept wondering what you were planning for all that PORK!
ReplyDeleteAnother sunny day. Much appreciated along with colorful blooms brought in from the garden: Snowdrops, flowering quince twigs, and bush honeysuckle make my kitchen window look cheerful. Enjoy your holiday Monday, y'all.
Good morning everyone.
ReplyDeleteBittersweet solve knowing that Gail has left us.
Pretty PORKY puzzle peppered with plenty of stretched-out pork. Easy theme; easy solve. No wite-out. FIR.
Heard Buster Brown ads with TIGE all the time (on the radio) in the '40's; maybe early 50's.
LIMU - Agree with Boomer about the ads. But many of them are still more entertaining than the shows they support IMO.
Enjoy the day.
FIR with no inkovers but..... PORK 4 times, is that the theme I ask? (The historically forgotten fourth little pig who built his house with I-beams ?).... Something to do with PORK PULLED 4 times? (Sheesh I won't touch that with a 10 foot citizen of Warsaw) ..or because the letters are "pulled" apart
ReplyDeleteJust read Boomer's narrative...last (very last) was correct ( ***pats self on back***) 😁
Wife of Augustus LIVIA,, RUPP not really Mondayish clues. End of the week difficulty level. Another obligatory Enoun answer unfortunately
When is OKED OK and when is OK'D OKAY?
Another PRISON BREAK in a week?
Sound uddered by a cow imposter....SHAMU
Start of McDonald's...EMCEE
Guy with no personality.....TYPO
Great restaurant but we had a very surly _____... WADER
My Cornerite buds who complete the puzzle in nanoseconds must be using "the cone of silence"🤫. DW finds mutilple reasons to interrupt me 🙉 so not worth trying to time myself 🙄
Another treat from Gail...and the second Prison Break this week.
ReplyDeleteCC, THE END 6:50.
My unsolicited dos centavos, deux centimes, due centesimi
ReplyDeleteDon't watch Jeopardy anymore since Ive become addicted to no-commercial-interrupted Streaming services but
American game shows are the last bastion of sexism. There should be a female replacement for Jeopardy host (I propose my DW she always has all the answers 😉)
Congrats Anon in finishing in 3:57. If I didn't have benign tremor, I would have done it in 3:56. Very easy as can be expected for Monday and a fun theme too.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning:
ReplyDeleteIt’s bittersweet to see Gail’s name but I’m glad we can still enjoy her work. This was a simple, straightforward theme, and the revealer was a nice surprise. I had no trouble with the solve, but I imagine newbies might have some difficulty with Tige, Ezio, Roald, Rupp, and KenL, especially the younger solvers. Then again, the perps were fair, so maybe these were learning experiences. My own complaint is that I hade to enter that loathsome Limu. I guess it could have been worse, i.e., if Doug was also in the puzzle.
Thanks to Bruce and the late Gail for a pleasant start to the week and thanks, Boomer for keeping us sane with your commentary and humor.
FLN
Wilbur, no, Art’s brother didn’t say “Hello, ball”; in fact, he didn’t say much of anything. (I well remember the scene you mention, though. 🎳)
Have a great day.
Musings
ReplyDelete-Isn’t Shawshank Redemption your favorite PRISON BREAK movie?
-We have no idea how long the line is for the vaccination but we got in it yesterday online
-This “phantom TAG” was really cost Boston
-Buster Brown and TIGE - Talk about a blast from the past!! (Plunk your magic twanger Froggy!)
-All of Joann’s TO DO lists contain wrangling with Medicaid bureaucrats and potential nursing homes to get her mother admitted because the one she is in now has run through all of her $73,000 in a year
-The numerous and ubiquitous insurance commercials like the lame LIMU variety all claim they will save you money. Who is the company that is cheating everyone?
CSO to Anonymous, Anonymous T, and Wilbur Charles with defs for me last week. Now,I can FIR with Perps and WAGS and know what I did!
ReplyDeleteBig Easy's favorite BBQ is PULLED PORK. Add Cole slaw on top and make a sandwich. A Monday-level puzzle on a Monday by Bruce & Gail. The PORK was obvious after POWER SNACK. I'm sure more will be coming soon.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I make fills that are so solid that some of the perps are filled and not noticed because the other perps were solid. I never notice DEREG, WOOD, or RELAX until Boomer's write up. I only know of LIVIA & TIGE from Xwords but it takes perps to fill them.
Anon@7:44- what's the rush? What will you do the rest of this day?
Ray-O. sexism on game shows? You have too much time on your hands if you think that's a problem. Cone of Silence- I remember it from Maxwell Smart.
IM- "My dog's better than your dog... cause he eats KENL Ration".
I enjoyed the puzzle, but I agree with Irish Miss that this doesn't seem like a Monday puzzle. Stuff like KENL, TIGE, LIVIA, RUPP, RKOs, etc are completely legit, but seem obscure or outdated for a Monday. And I don't love DEREG or WAWA as clued for Monday or any other day.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable puzzle. In addition to DEREG, I disliked convenience store inconvenience clue. I thought the clueing for 5D could be better.
ReplyDeleteThe Hartford Courant printed your 10 Down clue as "slight of hand." Can you shape them up, please?
ReplyDelete"Maybe one of the reasons the hall is named mess.". You're one funny guy, Boomer. But unlike my* Mess you didn't have to pay for it. Do you remember the "purple death?"
ReplyDeleteActually, they use the highest price item is sold for. For blueberries:$4.99. bogo is $2.50. Normally 3/10. But PF Sausalitos (3.89) bogo is $1. 95*2 (except they rarely go bogo). Now 3 for 2 is no bargain at all
$Store lines run the length of an aisle.
I forgot how to spell the ice cream and could only WAG EZIO. Left it blank for Monday FIW.
LIVIA must have a Shakespearean role, eh OMK?
I actually find LIMU amusing. Heck I even like Flo. What I don't like are car ads that promote reckless driving. I was passed on rte 75 last evening by two racers at 100 mph weaving.
HG, and thus replay. The LIMU Emu of Sports. That "Twanger line" was what I was trying to remember.
Phillip's first sentence upon seeing the Atlantic ocean" "That's a lot of WA WA".
DPS are basic baseball. I FIW on simple Latin and Spanish along with ignorance of 90% of pop-cul TV and Music. Nor to speak of Music vernacular.
WC
*O-Club. PD was Corned beef and cabbage.
DNF! Rare result for a Monday. Didn't recall the HOMES mnemonic -- of little use here in So Cal -- and couldn't complete the opera star's name with a WAG, so the letter I in ERIE and EAIO remained blank. A parting kick in the pants from Gail, perhaps.
ReplyDeleteOwenKL is in fine form today, and Ray-O woke up on the funny side of the bed. Good luck with the dentistry, D-O! Many thanks to Bruce, the late Gail, Rich and Boomer.
ReplyDeleteNice Monday puzzle tinged with a sad reminder.
How about those Progressive ads, “don’t be your parents”, I think those are funny as well. The Emu has grown on me.
Stay safe.
Big Easy, your sandwich must be an acquired taste. I don't care for cole slaw even by itself. I think it's the cabbage which to me always tastes ACRID (CWD word). Some restaurants use cabbage on Mexican food which I really dislike. That reminds me, tacos for tonight but with lettuce.
ReplyDeleteBoomer, thank you for always making me laugh.
I took a deep breath when I saw that this was a Bruce and Gail puzzle this morning. Yes, given how sad it is that we recently lost Gail, it was indeed a "bitter-sweet" moment as Spitboov and Irish Miss noted. But, yes, sweet to see another puzzle from her and Bruce, and maybe there are still others to come. And this one was a pleasure, especially with Boomer's always fun commentary. Many thanks for that too.
ReplyDeleteI started to notice all the Ks ending the circles and was delighted when I got PULLED PORK. Interesting to see DEREG not far from DEREK at the top. Then we got RIGID and RELAX close together on the bottom.
Thank you for reminding us about Martin Luther King day, Lucina.
Have a good week coming up, everybody.
HG, yes on Shawshank. The best thing Stephen King ever wrote.
ReplyDeleteBig Easy, I am halfway out the door to fire up the pellet grill. Let's see eighteen hours from now will be....4 a.m. I might need to re-think this.
Lucina, it's not the cabbage but the ubiquitous Mayo I hate. Ordered a tuna sandwich, it came back swimming in mayo. Liquid mayo-tuna soup in mayo .
ReplyDeleteUgh.
WC
Didn't like wawa or dereg, and can we lose 'eke' once and for all ? Yes the Liberty ads are terrible, especially the last three words.
ReplyDeleteEvery puzzle, every day, has a clue related to golf. There are so many other sports, and topics in general, I have no idea why this needs to be the case. Please try making some without!
ReplyDelete1. I don't mind the emu, but DOUG should be taken out and shot.
ReplyDelete2. FLO by herself wasn't bad, but the cast they added need to go with Doug.
3. This reminds me of the countdown on Dan Naddor puzzles which was even sadder as he was so young.
4. SHAWSHANK is great and some of his other non-horror books are well done.
5. Andy Devine? MAGIC TWANGER ?
6. Pluck or Plunk? To play a keyboard or plucked stringed instrument, especially in an inexpressive or unskilled way."I got a guitar when I was twelve and started plunking away on it"
7. ELIZABETH BANKS PRESS YOUR LUCK ; SARA HAINES THE CHASE : ELLEN DEGENERES ELLEN'S GAME OF GAMES .
Sexism?
I think Ray-O- was referring to today's pickles comic strip...
ReplyDeleteRay-O, One of the temporary Jeopardy! hosts will be Katy Couric.
ReplyDeleteLemonade714@1:24
ReplyDeleteI don't understand your question about sexism. Are you suggesting that too many women are now hosting those shows? If so, we should look to the past when ONLY MEN hosted shows. Groucho Marx, Art Linkletter, Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, Jay Leno, etc. Okay, some of these comparisons may be apples and oranges since comedians are in a class by themselves. But still? Can you tell us what you mean.
BTW, while watching daytime Jeopardy at 12:30 the guest hosts are announced for the week so it's no surpirse.
Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Bruce and Gail (RIP), and Boomer.
ReplyDeleteI found this CW a little crunchy for a Monday, but I saw the PULLED PORK theme early and filled in the circles.
But I arrived here to find that I forgot to correct my ice cream for Daas to DASZ, leaving Eaio not EZIO.
Some Canadian disadvantage today with LIMU ( fortunately we are spared those commercials that you all seem to hate), RUPP, but I did know ERIE!
Ray-o- “ When is OKED OK and when is OK'D OKAY?” When it is EKED!
Diana@1:03- I only saw two golf clues today (65D & 27A), but there are four baseball clues (1A, 5D, 13D, 31A). Most of us will tolerate special knowledge clues (sports, music, Greek mythology, slang like yesterday’s BAE) as long as they are limited and varied. All of us have different knowledge bases and CWs can be a good learning experience. Just my two cents.
Anyone looking for an alternate clue for WAWA could use “town with a Goose on the Trans Canada north of Saul Ste Marie”. I dare you to LIU😁🌲🌲
Wishing you all a great day.
I wish they'd send Limu to Blue Emu.
ReplyDeleteA happy reminder of Gail Grabowski today, with yet another pzl from the Venzke/Grabowski team!
ReplyDeleteNot an easy start in the NW corner for those, like me, who forgot which state was home to .
I got SHAH but little else in that sector for a while.
The rest was easier---and made it feel more like a typical Monday challenge.

-I'm off to sing the national anthem
Re: female Jeopardy host. I was simply stating that DW would be a perfect host for Jeopardy.
ReplyDeleteShe already has an answer for everything
😳
I disliked this one. It started right off the bat. Ahem, ohoh and the clue for wawa should never be in a puzzle*never*. Names and sports clues up the ying yang. Is it possible to make a puzzle without so many names and sports references?
ReplyDeleteFIR, but ignored the theme. Nice to see EZIO again. He was great.
ReplyDeleteScanning through the long answers first, I immediately saw and filled in the 63A answer. Working my way through the down clues, I was able to figure out all the theme answers fairly quickly.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I messed up EZIO/DAZS, for a FIW.
I remembered TIGE jingle, but since I had never seen it in print, I wasn’t sure how to spell the dog’s name. Perps got it for me, as well as ROALD, LIVIA and OLLA.
Our dogs always ate KEN-L Ration, when I was a kid.
RUPP was a gimme, since his teams seemed to be unbeatable back in my ute. I had lived in El Paso in 1957 and 1958, and I was very familiar with and a fan of Texas Western University (now UTEP). I was quite excited the night Texas Western Miners played Rupp’s Kentucky Wildcats in the 1966 NCAA Championship game. Texas Western didn’t stand a chance!!! Howsomever, they managed to do the unthinkable and beat Kentucky 72-65. The remarkable thing about the game (remember the time frame) was that Texas Western started five black players for the first time in NCAA Championship history (the team WAS integrated) against Rupp’s all-white team. Thus, it was also the first time that a team with five black starters won the title game.
And, CanadianEh! --- Also, the WAWA convenience stores on the east coast, headquartered in WAWA, PA.
FWIW: Häagen-Dazs is a nonsense word that, although it sounds Scandinavian, at least to English speakers, it resembles no actual word in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, or German.
ReplyDeleteHäagen-Dazs ice cream is not made in Scandinavia and never was. The company began in New York. The word is made up and was meant, presumably, to sound Danish, so as to call to mind Denmark, which the founder believed would have a positive image in the U.S., and, perhaps, call to mind cool, icy slopes and fresh snow. The word has no meaning in any language.
HuskerG- you found Wawa. We have photos nearly every year at that goose! Kids got bigger but goose remained the same. The drive from the Soo is beautiful in good weather, but brutal in winter if snowstorm is coming off Superior.
ReplyDeleteLeo- There is another Wawa😮😮! The name comes from Ojibway for wild goose.
I LIUed the one in Pennsylvania and found this
“ Wawa’s original dairy farm was built on land located in a rural section of Pennsylvania called Wawa, which was named from a local Native American tribe in honor of their favored game – the Canada goose.”
Seriously, no one @3d thought of Gilda Radner?.
ReplyDeleteMessed up DAaS (Hi C, Eh!) / that Opera Man.
Back to work.
Cheers, -T
Follow-up: Barbara Walters take. (It was in the side-bar).
