FIRight without much problem. Did have sHElf < CHEST, probably others I've forgotten about.
A quibble about the theme. 3 themers are idioms, the other two are fairly direct synonyms. I would have preferred if thy were all idioms. But they did all fit the echoed clue.

I used ESTEEM in one of my l'icks yesterday! Do I get a prescience point for that?

LUCY was a girl from west TEXAS,
Who was know for the speed of her exits!
    From a party she'd SPLIT,
    To GO HOME and sit,
And avoid the SLOWEST virus, infectious!

LAURA would only eat things low-cal.
On the dangers of fat she was vocal.
    And in her coffee machine
    She'd allow no caffeine.
She made a sticker, a decaf DECAL.

  2. Good morning!

Don't know what's going on. For the past 4-5 days I've popped out of bed, wide-awake at 5 AM. Oh well... I enjoyed the puzzle, no reveal clue need apply. Boomer, thanx for fillling in, and for 'splainin' the mysterious TAFKAP. Impressive debut, Stephanie.

GRAPE: Dw enjoys merlot, but I'll pass in favor of barley and hops.

GREEN Bay: Only Cheeseheads would build an open-air pro football stadium. My sister, who remained in WI until retirement, had season tickets for years. She lived only 30 miles from the stadium. Now she lives not far from C.C. and Boomer. Cold weather sports evokes memories of attending my only college hockey game. It was at Michigan Tech in Houghton. Rather the floor-installed chillers, they chilled the entire building. No wind, but still...

  3. FIR, but had to fix NeMOY to accommodate LINEN. DNK Jipijapa, LUCY, TAFKAP, ILANA or Voldemort.

One-time AAA quote: "The sun has riz, the sun has set, and we ain't out of Texas yet." When you are in El Paso, you are closer to the Pacific Ocean than you are to Texarkana. When you are in Texarkana, you are closer to the Atlantic Ocean than you are to El Paso.

I have a pre-colonoscopy doctor visit this morning. "Stool" evoked a different meaning. Where's my snot-flavored drink? I'm a little thirsty.

And the eighth deadly sin is...PIZZA! At least according to Jimmy Buffett.

Isn't a horse called ROAN because it has mixed colors? Seems a little like calling "pinto" a color.

Congrats to Stephany for the debut. This one had just enough crunch to be a good Wednesday grid. My favorite was CHEST. (The wife asks: "Honey, is the neckline on this dress to deep?". The husband looks at her and says: "No babe, but I can see your CHEST hair." She replies: "But I don't have CHEST hair!". "Then it's to deep." says the husband.) And thanks to Boomer for another great morning of humor.

  5. Good Morning. This might be skim milk masquerading as cream but last Monday in my senior league I twirled 211-176-176 -- 563. Not quite a 190 average but a lot better than the 407 I had in week one. Tuesday was time for my semi annual Eligard shot which I passed with no side effects. Happy Wednesday everyone. Take the rest of the day off. (I cannot, I have to coach the high schoolers for an hour this afternoon. See you next week. Boomer

  6. Good morning. Thank you Stephanie, welcome and congrats on your LA Times debut. Nice job, Boomer.

    Delightful puzzle.

Don't know how in the world I knew a Jipijapa hat was a PANAMA. At that point, I had no perps and didn't hesitate.

OTOH, I did not know ILANA Glazer, and except for the beginning P, I was initially stumped at TAFKAP. Thank you perps.

More initials: DKNY and YSL. Donna Karan New York, Yves Sait Laurent. Clothing and designer goods for men and women. Fashion houses.

"A pocket 7-10 is the worst." I agree. A change of emotions in a matter of seconds, as you watch the ball track into the pocket, DELIGHTED that you know you are going to get a strike, and then, next thing you know, the 7-10 are standing there unscathed. Then you hear from the background, "Get one for the team !"

D-O, welcome to my world. My internal clock is way out of whack.

Drove through Houghton and crossed the bridge into Hancock on our way to vacay at the Mountain Lodge out on the peninsula. Saw all the sights. Old timey pictures of the roadways cleared of winter snow were almost unbelievable. Can you imagine driving down miles of roadway with 25 to 30 foot (and more) vertical walls of snow on either side ? The raw coast with vistas of Lake Superior was breathtaking.

Boomer, congrats on the series, and 211 !

I'll be DELIGHTED when I finally get the garage fully painted, and it ain't going to paint itself, so I'd better get moving.

    See all y'all later n'at !

  7. I was delighted to finish in 7:23. I didn't know Ilana Glazer, but mistook her anyway for comedian Nikki Glaser, which looked very wrong next to Nemoy, and then, Nimoy. So, had do some correcting in the bottom-left corner. I also didn't know anything about Dr. Hawking's child, or the Prince abbreviation.

  8. Boomer, I don't know why you won't admit to knowing (57D) Donna Karan of New York vs Yves Saint Laurent, you are a far superior crossword solver than I. And, fashion wise (21A). where I live crew socks are a must. The fleas gnats mosquitoes etc in our grass cause misery to one's ankles. Those who follow fashion trends suffer down here in anklets and no show socks. Thanks for an entertaining blog.

  12. Good morning everyone.

This puzzle expressed great joy and elation. Good way to start the day.
No problems with the solve. Got PRINCE from perps. Always wondered about ROAN, too. Tried 'nee' before NOM perped.
I 'AYED' a lot in USN days.
AREAS calculations. Thinking that we haven't had 'polar planimeter' in quite awhile. Gread for calculating areas with irregularly shaped boundaries.
Forked over - - Always like the idiom. Reminded me of turning over and fluffing up wet hay in windrows. Used a tedder in the old days but found that nipping the windrow with a side-delivery rake worked well, too.

Always good to see you, Boomer; thanks for pinch-hitting.

Jinx - Good luck on your upcoming procedure.

  14. Wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for the fun, Stephanie (congrats on your LAT debut) and Boomer (thanks for pinch-hitting . . . again!).
I FIRed in very good time with no inkblots. I was Delighted with the theme. (I echo WC re A+ to Owen for Pickled Tink!😁😁)

Hand up for not knowing TAFKAP, LUCY, ILANA or LORD Voldemort. But perps were friendly.
But I did know DKNY and YSL (yes Tony Express, we have seen them both in previous CWs).

There is a town called CANSO in Nova Scotia.

We had PRINCE and LORD today.

    I noted a plethora of double letters today - MOON, ESTEEM, TROLLS/SPELL, DROOL/OOFS, ROLL, GREED/GLEEFUL, GREEN/INDEED/SEE, HAPPY.

AYE (isn’t it usually AYE AYE cap’n?”) followed by YES/NO and with NON (French for No) above was apt.

Wishing you all a great day.

  17. What fun, I say, with this delightful puzzle. Thanks, Stephanie! I look forward to more from you. FIR with only two WOs: salt/LIME and NIcE/NINE as I worked from the bottom up on 25D. Did the puzzle clockwise from my first fill CEL which amazingly brought to mind TICKLED PINK which I was.

Thanks, Boomer, for an additional review this week. We appreciate your being able to help out. Nice bowling progress, too! And OwenKL, pickled Tink!! Chuckle, chuckle. Made me remember the Peter-Pan-goes-wrong play link we had recently. Good luck, Jinx, with your procedure. And Happy Painting to TTP.

Hope you all have a delightful day!

  18. Hi Y'all! Truly delightful puzzle, Stephanie. Hope we see more of yours. So much positive phrasing brightens the day. Boomer, always a delight.

Hand up for DNK: LUCY, ILANA, jipijapa hat, but Wag'd & perped easily. Tried Bruce before LAURA.

GLad to hear from Hahtoolah yesterday & know she's not suffering the storms in NOLA. My Granddaughter was headed back down that way. Haven't heard if she stayed at relatives enroute or got back for the storm.

  19. Hi All!

Congrats, Stephanie, on your LAT debut. Quite the giddy theme :-)

Thanks for stepping in and informing me that TAFKAP is not some sorta trade-pact Boomer.

    WOs: N/A
    ESPs: PRINCE, LUCY, ILANA
NIWTCEMs* - Jipijapa(?), Dern or Linney(? - is this Brit speak?), & aforementioned TAFKAP
Fav: Ms. PAC-Man brought back memories of hours (and quarters!) spent at the arcade.

    {C+, B+; LOL pickled Tink}
    WC @8:14 gets a P for procrastination.

FLN - LeoIII, Curmudgeon nailed it. I never understood BC & AD. The dude lived 33 years (so they say) so when is the before and after? And there's no year zero? Me thinks they didn't quite understand the number-line yet. [though 0 had been around for ~300 to ~1700 (civilization dependent) years by then]

PK - let us know how Granddaughter is. The storm was rough east of me.
//buddy 25 miles east lost his fence; not so bad but I only lost a flowerpot.

Jinx - good luck. If they sedate you w/ what they gave me, best nap ever!

    TEXAS is big...
Longest ride ever was from Basic in El Paso to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) in San Antonio. I don't remember most of it 'cuz someone bribed the bus driver to pull into a truck stop so we could load-up a few cases of beer.

  20. Not super "delighted" with this puzzle but helped when I realized the theme answers except for GLEEFUL (an unfortunate outlier) were phrases and not synonyms of the theme. Finally FIR. But I think no Lesser of Stephanie 😁...Great debut

Jipijapa?...TAFKAP?....wha? at least I knew PDA from a recent 'splainin'. Not sure I get Wine, with "the".. GRAPE...sure one of our cornerite "Smelly yays" will expound..😉

Inkkovers: ale/IPA, hear/MIND, ailes/ROLES, Iamso/CANSO...Thought a perfume unit was a spritz but wouldn't perpwalk. NON (French "no") over AYE "yes" near YESNO.....Back-combs TEASES.. ahhh, I SEE like the girls 60's hairdos in my HS classes. Were the bank robbers praying they wouldn't get caught? THOU?...lol.

TROLLS live under bridges. Remember " The Three Billygoats Gruff"?

Saw "The Theory of Everything" (2014) but don't remember Hawking's daughter LUCY

An early train would have had _____ engine...ESTEEM
If an elegant can fly why can't a _____? TUNAROLL.

  22. Thank you Stephanie for a very nice puzzle, and thank you Boomer, for pinch hitting with humor and aplomb.

Wednesdays, the mid-week CWs are always a hybrid type combination, not too easy and not too difficult ... aha, there lies the rub ...

Boomer, (since you mentioned it ...) sincere best wishes and prayers for your continued recovery and a better prognosis. As one who's been there, I can somewhat emphathize, if not truly understand, what you must be going through. I have a couple of friends who are urologists and their loose talk ( despite HiPAA rules, and what not ) over dinner parties, has given me a fairly good idea of what is involved. I pray that all this super interventional care will eventually bear fruit.

A couple of bloggers mentioned '211', in their congrats, and I was wondering what this code meant ? I googled extensively, and wondered why you might need a code 211 ( family and social services ...) .... and finally I realized that the 211 referred to your bowling score. To those of us, not in the sport, the significance of certain numbers has very little meaning.

This blog is already too long, more later.

Boomer blog:::'With my medicine, I'm not allowed even one drop of alcohol ...'

... Ray-O and others may correct me, but, its my understanding, that the body often regularly produces some of its own alcohol, from simple carbohydrates and sugars, ...the auto-brewery syndrome.

Reminds me of the story, where a frustrated pediatrician was examining a young cranky child, with no apparent medical problems.

As a last resort, he asked the mother, what was the last thing she fed the child at night, before sending him to sleep...

The mother said, she gives him a glass of cold milk ...

The pediatrician says, '..Thats the problem. He drinks the milk, which turns into buttermilk, then to carbohydrates and sugars, and that converts into alcohol ... and sure enough, he wakes up with a hangover ...'

    Have a nice day, all.

Otherwise the puzzle filled in relatively easily.

We can work this up to a JACKPOT (15 of 15 letters) if we focus in on the guy who is most hopped up, and truly EAGER for the convention's proceedings to proceed apace.
I mean the one we call the...

    "SPEED-UP DELEGATE!!"

  35. Thanks to all who extended their good wishes on my upcoming colonoscopy. All seems well, and the procedure is scheduled for November. I even picked up my snot-flavored drink at the hospital pharmacy. BTW, the scheduler had a plaque on her desk declaring "I hate being bipolar. It's AWSOME!"

  37. Anonymous T, last night you wrote:

"My query was due to y'all taking days to process / "back-see" the data; the hypothesis can only be proved with real-time predictions. Meaning all the noise filtered in near-RT with no possible cherry-picking the data. Y'all are on to something, I'm sure, but the computations require some big-iron.
//I'm sure I'm not telling you anything new."

You hit the nail right on the head, my friend.

Yes, I guess I did out myself but just recently I learned that there is no PRIVACY left. A few days ago I wanted an address for someone and on a whim decided to look it up on the internet. Whoa! I not only found the address, but occupation, yearly income and much more than I wanted to know! So I'm sure anyone can locate anything they want to know about me.

  39. I am home, now, from the road trip and am roughly fifty percent caught up with the pile of work that awaited me. We drove 1,800 miles over six days with 5/6 of that done on just two of those days. The biggest problem was the smoke/air quality in south central Oregon. Fortunately, it rained the first night that we were there and things cleared up quite a bit.

It was great to meet Picard and Merlie in person yesterday and I thank Picard for posting the photos.

  42. Thanks, Jayce.

Spitz, we did. It was very nice to share some real life moments to augment the "virtual" friendships initiated here. If this COVID thing abates sufficiently it would be nice to have a national gathering.

  43. FIR. Needed perps for LAURA, ILANA and TUNAROLL (I DON’T eat raw fish, but that’s a story for another night.)

Welcome and congrats, Stephanie; thanks for another great expo, Boomer!

PRINCE was filled in with perps. I had forgotten that he had changed his name to:

    TAFKAP

Therefore, the acronym flew right over my head.

My ex-wife was from Joliet, and her father was a HUGE Bears fan. I'm talking season tickets at Soldier Field in the dead of winter. When she was young, they usually did a week of summer vacation in Grand Marais, on the UP of Michigan. One year, they even let me come along (stories about THAT trip too). We were all crammed into my Toyota Corolla, and on the way back to Joliet, I detoured off the highway in Green Bay.

“WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!?!?!?!?” Well, words to that effect….

“You in the back seat --- PIPE DOWN!!!” (That was before my becoming a temporary - now permanent resident of Texas. Now, it would have been "ALL YALL in the back seat...."

Bill (FIL – riding shotgun, of course) KNEW where I was going, and he didn’t say a word. We simply pulled into the parking lot at Lambeau Field and just sat there for about five minutes. Bill was very pleased! Sometimes, we have to meet the enemy on his home turf!
