Boomer
Good Morning all. After three doses of chemotherapy I am learning a bit. The first infusion yielded minor side effects. The chemo stays working in the old body as the second dose is dripped in. More side effects and weakness. Then along came the third dose. I named it Apollo 11 because I landed on the moon. I did not hit a golf ball though, and I have a blood draw today to hopefully tell me that things are working. Happy major league baseball season everyone !
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteSaw all the Bs, but failed to look at the letter following them. D'oh. Still it was nice to cruise to victory sans Wite-Out. Learning moments: Uno requires a game box, and forgot that O-J was an athlete -- only recognized him from the trial and that Airplane movie. Thanx for the diversion, Chris, and for the cheery expo, Boomer. (Hoping you get that lowered PSA result from the blood test.)
MSDOS -- I still miss it. It was fast and compact and didn't require a mouse. Multiple programs could fit on a single 100k diskette. But Windoze won the day.
PINE TREES -- You're right, Boomer, no leaves to rake. But those pesky pine needles fall everywhere, stopping up rain gutters and require raking on the lawn. You can't leaf-blow 'em. The trees do grow fast. We've got a "volunteer" out front that's only a few years old, but is pushing 30 feet. These are Loblolly Pines, not the Christmas tree variety. We originally had five 100+ footers out front. Only one remains, like the one in that photo.
FIR, but erased hmo for HOA (because decaf) and weevel for WEEVIL (because dumbass). No real unknowns, but ELSE seems more likely to mean "otherwise" instead of "in addition".
ReplyDeleteTonight's the big game. I mentioned before March Madness started that Kentucky's problem was consistency. Yup. In spite of beating finalists North Carolina by 29 and Kansas by 18 in the regular season, they fell to 15-seed St. Peters. I may be the only member of Big Blue Nation who wasn't surprised. Congratulations to the Gamecocks of South Carolina for winning the women's national championship.
When LEON Spinks' name would come up on TV, my dad would quip "He does? Guess he needs a shower." (I won't tell you his response to hearing about Roosevelt Leaks.)
I have never played UNO. I progressed from war to go fish to blackjack to hearts to rook to euchre. I was supposed to take to bridge, but didn't really get into it.
Windows 3 required MS DOS to be loaded first.
The Norfolk Admirals are in the East Coast Hockey League, hockey's AA baseball equivalent.
Thanks to Chris for the fun, easy Monday puzzle, and to Boomer for the PUNishment.
SunBEAMS come at break of day,
ReplyDeleteAt night, they DIM, then go away.
Such has it been
Since dawn of Men.
How boring is the sweep of day?
She traced her line to a REGAL HOUSE,
But royal pretensions time did melt.
In fact, she'd fail,
When full of ALE,
To act a princess-esly souse!
{B, B-.}
15 to FIR. W/Os WEAVIL:WEEVIL, DINERS:BISTRO, ALSO:ELSE. Missed the singular 50D. Oy. Also missed the theme….completely. Not until I read Boomer’s outstanding write-up did I see the theme and vowel progression. Thanx for the fun CW, CS, and thanx for the write-up, Boomer.
ReplyDeleteA Monday FIR to continue a new streak. It was perfect until the SE corner when I blithely filled ALIve, certain it was right. It took a bit before I realized my mistake, wrote ALIBI, and could finish TEARY and ESSES. Two WOs but FIR in the end. Yay!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris, for a classic puzzle using a progressive vowel change in the themers. After the first two, I expected a B and B theme but BILL NYE ended that.
And Boomer, you did a fine job with the review. We are all thinking of you today. Fingers crossed for a good test result.
I learned about Uno from our grandson since it wasn't popular yet when our children were growing up.
Hope you all have a great week!
Took 4:56 to finish today. Spelling weevil was the trickiest part for me (after changing "bed" to "pad"), and couldn't think of Corel, though the perps filled it in for me.
ReplyDeleteThis was a Monday quick run - like ATL granny I thought it was going to be two words both beginning with B and B after the first two theme answers, but BZZT on that. Took me a minute to see the B_LL in all the vowel progression.
ReplyDeleteOnly other do-over was having STOWAWAY before EBBS made it change to STOWABLE
Thanks Boomer for the amusing blog - hope the numbers are obedient today and to Chris for the amusing puzzle
Started slow with RoyaL/REGAL and NEver/NEATH but I recalled ELBA and the ARBS came to me.
ReplyDeleteThen STOWAbag seemed to make sense. Chris made Monday interesting as Boomer always does
The regular beams on some of the new cars are like high beams
I'm convinced the OJ NG was payback for King
Oops, after one bad box over the weekend I just found 2. I had ALIve* for that wanted poster and never noticed the junk on the two acrosses
Now I know how Aesop's hare felt like
Is WordPerfect still in use? All the good software was replaced by the inferior MS junk
I played a game called Everlasting Color Cards; never played War or UNO
I saw the a,e,i,o,I but didn't notice the LL. I thought the second word would have significance
WC
I think I'll start a wordle with ANIME
WC
* As I see AtlG did too
Thanks for anime suggestion. Helped me get the wordle of the day in three! Par?
DeletePs, it didn't take long to see UConn was outclassed. Black is the new Round in women's bball
ReplyDeleteVery easy break today after the bear we had on Saturday. Most of the vowel progression puzzles we have had use all short vowels, as in bat, bet, bit, bot, but. Today we have two outliers, ball and boll.
ReplyDeleteI give up on fresh tomatoes all winter. The tomatoes don’t hold a candle to summer tomatoes. By March I am willing to compromise. Camparis are the best I have found. I enjoyed my BLTs these last two weeks.
Even worse than dealing with the thick carpet of needles left by pines, is dealing with the tar on your car. Even if you park away from pine trees, birds eat the tar laden seeds from the cones, process them and drop the remains on your car which are very difficult to remove.
Our HOA was very good for many years, but two years before I moved, with no consultation with us, the officers took out a huge loan for renovating all the exteriors with high monthly fee increases They took a straw poll after it was a done deal and was surprised at our angry reaction. Owners in the building trades said there were better options, although still expensive. Too late. They had not been consulted.
High school teens interested in anime took our college level Japanese course. They were highly motivated and did well, as did the adults returning for their MAs. The college age students took Japanese as their required language course. Every one of them laughed and played in the back of the room and did very poorly. They were clueless to take such a difficult language.
Our extended family, including my kids, have played UNO since the late 1960's. Alan still likes it.
Going thru this right now. Owners replaced HOA board but we are stuck with million dollar contracts for 440 units. Everyone is upset.
DeleteFIR, and got the theme early. Struggled a bit with the last theme answer when I tried to rationalize bulldog in it, but would have had spaces to spare. Finally just let the perps rule.
ReplyDeleteNice 'n' easy with a fun theme 😊..B(aeiou)LL+....albeit only the first two clue answers repeat the B and BILL NYE is 2 instead of 3 syllables but hey it's Monday.
ReplyDeleteITO? I don't remember a trial judge on "The Simpsons" ? ('twasn't Simpson on trial but OJ). Rumor has it that Mamie smacked Pat Nixon for making fun of IKE's alopecia.😃
"Wanted poster"...Why don't they arrest the guy when they're taking his picture? 🤔DRYS? (I guess I'm one of the WETS) that makes Canada Dry as a mixer an oxymoron. A BISTRO may be unpretentious but a "BEESTRO" can be very high-brow.🧐

ReplyDelete-BILL NYE was a frequent video visitor in my classroom
-SCOUR – Why are women better searchers?
-In the ETO, IKE had to be a general and a diplomat
-The first shuttles landed at EDWARDS AFB because its dry lakebed runway is nearly 5 miles long
-The McDonald’s Menu in PESOS. They also use the symbol $
-COREL’s Word Perfect was the first real word processor I ever saw. I was AWED!!
-PINE TREES have no leaves but in this weeks Master’s tournament the players might have to hit out of what is called the PINE STRAW
-The DRYS got prohibition passed and there was a big drop in alcoholism, but…
-Subbing today and once again I will AVER/AVOW that cell phones are my best friend!
Manic Monday. Thanks for the fun, Chris and Boomer (hope the lab results are encouraging).
ReplyDeleteI FIRed in good time and saw the theme (hand up for thinking at first that it was a double B theme).
I know it is Monday, but let me beat Irish Miss in pointing out the 24 three-letter fills, plus five three-letter words pluralized with an S or ES. Plus there were several other longer fills that had an added S.
STOWABLE and COMELIEST elicited a “really!”.
I agree with Jinx about clue for ELSE.
I noted HOA and BOA. PUB/ALE and ETO / IKE were already noted by Boomer.
COREL, MS DOS and MALWARE make an interesting combo.
REGAL/EMPIRES reminds me of the controversy re William and Kate’s recent Caribbean Royal tour.
I have played UNO for years. It can go on for hours if you have a large group and great rivalry.
Wishing you all a great day.
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteIt’s been awhile since we’ve had this type of theme but it’s simplicity is perfect for a Monday. Hand up for thinking B and B was a developing theme. My only w/o was Royal/Regal and the only unknown was Corel. Aside from the numerous (25) three letter words, I enjoyed the mini theme of Corel/MS DOS/Malware/Net, a big CSO to all of our Nerds, plus all of the fun pairings: Ike/ETO, Pub/Ale, Ball/Net, Emo/Ito, Uke/Ike, Ito/ETO, Alp/Ale, Bistro/Pub, Boa/HOA, Regal/Empires, and Boa/Lei. CSO to MalMan (Malware), and DO and dear Spitz (USN).
Thanks, Chris, for an easy start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for your irrepressible humor and wit. Good luck with your test results.
It’s very sunny at the moment but the forecast calls for a wet week. Those April showers that bring May flowers, I guess.
Have a great day.
Jinx and CanadianEh! : Anything in addition? Anything else?
ReplyDeleteHi All!
ReplyDeleteA few bumps in the road but an easy solve to ease in the work-week. Thanks Chris.
Boomer - phun expo and flights of fancies (connecting RUE to Golden Girls - Priceless).
I'm looking forward to good news re: your PSA blood work.
Your Twins got a good deal on Correa; he's at least a 4&1/2-tool player. Let's see how well he plays w/o Altuve. //those two seemed to communicate w/o a word.
WOs: RoyAL, eTO, WEEVeL, aLSo->ELSE (Hi UncleFred!)
ESPs: N/A
Fav: ODE TO Joy [flash mob]
EDWARDS AFB - I did a consulting gig at the Borax steams' power-plant nearby. I missed a Shuttle landing by one day(!) but I got to meet some mission control guys from JSC at the PUB. Great stories.
FLN - {A, B}; I love been burritos; WC - Foundation: Psychohistory seems prescient ;-)
CED - want something cool to read? SALT. As Spock would say, "Facinating."
Windows 3.0. My first "my" computer (386 DX) came with it. I uninstalled it and loaded MS DOS. "If I wanted a Mac, I would have bought a Mac" I told anyone who'd listen :-) #HiMem
Anyone else remember WordPerfect's markup language to get complex math formulas in your document? This was b/f WYSIWYG [what you see is what you get].
WC - you get the Gold-Star for calling out the inferiority of M$'s cruft.
{B+, B+}
UNO is passé. Kids these days love Exploding Kittens. //It's a never-ending game. I played w/ Youngest during the Texas Big Freeze. Not as much fun as Cards against Humanity.
Xfinity is supposed to send a guy out today. AT&T is laying fibre [just for you C, Eh!] and I think the line was cut. 'Cuz we oft WFH [work from home], we have both [Comcast & ATT] for Internet so we're never off-line if one service dropps.
MALWARE? - Oy! I should get back to work. Play later.
Cheers, -T
Boomer,
ReplyDeleteJust started reading, and had to stop at the first comment (to comment...)
I'm afraid I did not understand your reference of "landed on the moon."
I am not sure if this is a good, or a bad reference...
I think I did understand the golf ball reference though.
My sincerest wish for you,
Is that you live long enough to visit the Moon.
And that the TSA allows you to not only bring a golf ball and club,
But a bowling ball and nine pins...
Delightful Monday puzzle, many thanks, Chris. And thanks for your always neat commentary, Boomer, including crazy pictures, like the one for RUE. Hope you get good results on your tests.
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoy seeing BILL NYE, the Science Guy, in puzzles.
Haven't seen Judge ITO for a while.
We got to go to the PUB right on top, but didn't get any ALE until way down at the bottom.
Don't think I've ever seen or heard the word COMELIEST for most attractive.
Have a great week coming up, everybody.
-T, why did you have to reload MSDOS? Windows 3.0 just ran over it. IIRC, if Windows wasn't in your autoexec.bat, it wouldn't even autostart. I remember being mad because I had to buy the new version of MS DOS (4?) before I could install Windows 3.1. And I only needed 3.1 because I had just purchased Visio (before MS bought it), and it wouldn't run on Win 3.0.
ReplyDeleteThe first word processor I remember using was Word Perfect. By the time I returned to school t6o get my MBA I had switched to Lotus Symphony. I still have all my files (that pursuit was VERY writing-intensive), but I don't know if there is any way to convert them. Not that anyone would care what I wrote 30+ years ago.
Boomer Thanks for the update! Good that you made it to the moon!
ReplyDeleteTook surprisingly long to get the vowel sequence theme. Hand up ALSO before ELSE. Doesn't ELSE seem just wrong as clued?
Here is my photo of the BETSY ROSS House in Philadelphia, along with the explanatory plaque.
From Yesterday:
CrossEyedDave Thank you for asking about our SALT Cave. Yes, that reference you found indeed explains it! It is a human creation. But quite a unique one!
Wilbur Charles, Lucina Thank you for the kind words about my SALT Cave photo and about us!
Wilbur Charles Way interesting that you taught French! I just got a reply from my friend Irene in France regarding Tante Nique. She validated my interpretation. But I also replied with your interpretation. I will be curious what she says!
RayOSunshine Yes, that was exactly my point about CHAS ADDAMS. That should have been clued as an abbr. My artist friend Pali signs his art with PX. No one would say his name is PX!
Hmm,,,
ReplyDeleteI began this puzzle disappointed, as I kept filling on acrosses without any downs...
(It was getting me down...)
And then I came across, (um, excuse me,) down,,, No, it was across! (Scuze me , I am all mixed up)
50A: shaft of light (four letters)
Well, I know this one,,, easy peasy,
RAY-O!
Hmm, how do you get a dash to fit in a crossword puzzle?
HG! 59 Pesos for a triple McD? Ay Caramba!
Anon-T,
Salt?
You want me to read a book on salt?
(Geez, I would be happy if only my wife would let me eat it...)
Anon-T,
Cards against humanity?
WTF! Isn't the world in enough trouble!
(Let's get together and play acey/ducey for peanuts and beer instead...)
Lastly,
Another vowel movement?
( I did not see it...)
I'd be happy if I just saw another bowel movement...
Hola!
ReplyDeleteIf I seem a bit cranky today, I apologize. It's because the puzzle page in the newspaper was rearranged from its previous format which was nearly perfect. Why they had to do that I don't know but I intend to inform them of my displeasure.
The puzzle, however, was just fine. Thank you, Chris Sablich and Boomer! Boomer, your witty commentary made up for the puzzle page fiasco. Well, fiasco might be a bit harsh.
When I travel I am often astounded by what some people carry on to the plane. Some really push the boundaries of what is allowed. My own sentiment has evolved to "the less carried, the better."
My heart still does a double take at the mention of IDRIS ELBA. What a hunk!
Last night we celebrated my granddaughter's 19th birthday at the Olive Garden. Prior to that they had all gone to the Cat Cafe which I declined. I just can't imagine eating with cats crawling all around. My daughter said there were about twenty of them. The birthday girl loves cats and received many cat-themed gifts.
Boomer, good luck with all your treatments.
Have a magical Monday, everyone!
ReplyDeleteThank you Chris Sablich for a relatively nice and easy Monday puzzle. I feel engergized !
Thank you Boomer for your charming blog review. I hope your third time at chemo is the charm, and everything works out Ok. Your pain and trials and tribulations are so heart wrenching. I hope your ordeal ends soon.
I had no real problems with the puzzle and a few write overs, .... stowaway to STOWABLE etc. Pine trees may not drop leaves in the fall, but their needle like leaves, drop all the time, and can make a mess in our back yard.
Husker Gary, the McDonalds menu in Mexico, shows prices are still a bargain compared to the US ... probably reflects the relative costs of living. You can't get a tripple burger in the US for 3 dollars.
The fact that the mexicans use the $ sign would be very confusing to american tourists... the mexicans could, and should have made a new logo .... like MP or PM to denote Mexican Pesos.
The Indian Rupee has a logo of an sanskrit letter R with a horizontal slash through it ,..... to distinguish it from the rupees and rupiahs in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldive Islands, Mauritius, Indonesia etc.
Have a nice day, you all.
A nice XWD for a Monday from Mr. Sablich, neatly grounded by Boomer...
ReplyDeleteCOMELIEST & Comely are favorite words of mine. I notice that I rarely hear them IRL.
They seem isolated to literature; I wonder why.
Yes, Picard, I felt the same about the cluing for ELSE.
ELSE doesn't occur "In addition"; it is always either "In opposition" or "As an alternative."
To quote Ms. Anderson: "Language / It's a virus."
~ OMK
_____________
DR: We're happy to report one diagonal today.
Far side.
It offers us a playful anagram (13 of 15 letters) of a pleasant game folk may play when they first shower together.
We call it...
"PEEKABOO TOWEL"!
Yes, IM upped my three-letter words by one! Let’s just say there was a plethora.
ReplyDeleteRay- o- You were in rare form this morning. Thanks for the laughs.
D’o- thanks for the ELSE explanation. Yes, that use of the word makes sense with the clue.
Picard - see d’o@9:47am
AnonT - thanks for the British/Canadian fibre.
Whoops!
ReplyDeleteI take it back about the ELSE cluing. For the most part I still agree with Picard, Jinx, and others that the cluing is, well, awkward.
BUT sometimes ELSE does occur "In addition."
Like when you're compiling a list of groceries, or of somebody's character flaws, and you seem to have reached the end.
You may still be scratching your head, wondering "What ELSE?" meaning "What have I left out--in addition!?"
~ OMK
OMK - Fun DR but DW is no longer a fan of PEEKABOO TOWEL.
ReplyDelete//I guess I'm getting to old for her ;-)
Did you mean Mr. Smith? [Matrix clip]
CED - Yes! Read (and eat) Salt. Your body needs it and beer will offset the hypertension [trust me, I'm a professional ;-)]
If you have crass friends, Cards Against is a hoot!
Vidwan - interesting re: Rupee. My understanding is our U$D came from the Spanish pieces of eight [insert STYX here [Blue Collar Man from the Title Album]
Lucina - I'd just be happy if folks kept their shoes on on the flight.
Oh, yeah. More work. Cheers, -T
Who else will be there? (in addition to you and I)I am buying butter and eggs. Do we need anything else? (in addition to butter and eggs)I've washed the dishes. Is there anything else I can do for you? (any additional chores)IMO this is just as common and frequently used as the meaning, different.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say says...
ReplyDeleteJinx: I wiped the 40Meg HD and loaded MS DOS from scratch. Then I loaded up a dialer to get into LA Tech's [Go BullDogs!] mainframe and play on IBM's network.
I also put SimCity (Godzilla can do some damage!) and Leisure Suit Larry on the box. We play'd the latter for ~4 hours b/f she got disgusted [no sense of humor(?)] and play'd the former for >19 hours in a row [with maps pin'd to the wall!] b/f giving up video games for life.
//Ok, you got me -- we still Wordle.
C, -T
Puzzling thoughts:
ReplyDeleteWLS (what Lucinda said) - I get the same printed newspaper as she does, and the new puzzle and games page is not what I expected, even after the Arizona Republic hyped it for days. Glad they didn't begin it last Friday - or maybe they should've - as it is the perfect foil for an April Fools
FIR; thanks to Chris (he must be a good guy, with a name like that!) and Boomer
Question to the IT geeks on board: have you had any experience buying an renewed or refurbished iPhone (or other smart phone or device)? I am still navigating with a 7+ and may want to think about upgrading before Apple stops updating this model. My current phone has 86% battery capacity, so it's still functional ... but I know that the newer models have had considerable upgrades ... any thoughts are greatly appreciated, and if you'd rather email me that's great
-T, I had totally forgotten about LSL, but he was good for giggles over legal (at least legal now) intoxicants. What, no MS Flight Simulator? How else could you determine whether your clone was really IBM compatible?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Boomer!
ReplyDeleteRefresh my memory -- wasn't Word Perfect the one that had the oddball command set? Such as something like /Alt/ /Sh/ /F4/ for 'Print'?
ReplyDeleteJinx @ 11:42: I don't know what file format Lotus used, but there is always the work-around. Print out what you need, then scan the material into a standard file format (.DOCX, .ODT, etc.). Tedious as all get-out, but if it's a necessity....
One letter gave me another FIW Monday. I couldn’t decide between ELBA or ALBA, and chose the wrong one. Worst thing is that I knew it was a unique spelling, and that we already had one ALBA with Jessica, so I should have just gone with the other one. He is one of the actors in the running to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.
ReplyDeleteOJ wasn’t in “Airplane.” That was Kareem. Ito kinda lost control of the OJ trial.
Luckily, I didn’t get into computers at work until Windows came along. Until then, the extent of our “computing” was monitoring lines of credit and account exposures via good old CRTs. It was light years better than our manual (pen and ink) systems!
Did anyone else watch the BENJAMIN FRANKLIN documentary on PBS? I found it fascinating even though I know a lot about him already. It's a different perspective. He certainly was a genius though not too devoted to his family.
ReplyDelete
