  1. Some pretty obscure proper names, but most were easily sussed through perps. On the other hand, the gimmick was obviously from the first themed fill, so the puzzle had that going for it. Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.

    ReplyDelete
  2. That should be “obvious “ rather than “obviously.” Autocorrect strikes again!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Good morning!

Zipped right through this one, Wite-Out-free. Even managed to get the theme. I probably should buy a LOTTO ticket today. Didn't notice all of the names, because the perps were kind. LEST showed up a day early. Thanx, Beth. Great expo, Hahtoolah.

DOMED: Our local high school football field isn't domed, but they do sell the naming rights. At the moment it's named for a local auto dealership.

SOAK: I also enjoy reading while soaking in the bathtub. One of these days I'll fall asleep in the tub, drop the phone, and that'll be the end of that practice.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Favorite themers: GEEZ LOUISE and THAT'S WILD. GOOD ONE was the weakest for me, a more fitting answer would've been HOLY MOLY! or something (though that wouldn't fit in the middle of a 15x15, maybe a farmer's "Wow!" (HOLY COW!) would've been better).

    ReplyDelete
  5. FIR, but erased odda for EDDA, jeez for GEEZ, and as am i for DITTO. Couldn't get started in the Pacific Northwest, but the Rolling in the Deep singer was 5 letters, so ADELE was a good guess. Other DNKS: GLAZER, SANSA, "jinkies" (nearly a CSO to moi) and INEZ.

Since this is the LA Times, I considered CARB (California Air Resources Board) instead of EPA, but it has too many letters (and too many rules).

I think the only times I've said WHO'D've, I use "thunk it" instead of "thought it".

Thanks to Beth for the Thursday-on-Tuesday puzzle, and to Ha2la for the colorful review and grins.

Off to Lakeland today. Check-in time is 3:00, so I'll take surface streets instead of Interstates and turnpikes.

FLN - Lucina, hope your grand gets well quickly.

  6. Hola!

Easy grid today. Thank you, Beth Rubin. And thank you, Ha2lah! I so enjoy your choice of cartoons.

CSO to my Dad's late cousin, LOUISE, whose sister was named Thelma. True!

it's been 53 years since I was a NUN so that train left the station long ago.

My niece's adopted daughter discovered through DNA that she is INUIT.

Today I'll have to rent a car. Not too long ago I was thinking how glad I am to have such a good car that would likely last me the rest of my life. Hah! Wishful thinking!

    Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!

  7. FIR, an easy Tuesday puzzle. Nice theme and few unknowns for me.

  8. Creative theme today which helped to speed along the solve.

In "A Man Called Ove" by Swedish author Fredrik Backman - Ove loved SAABs and thought they were the only cars any reasonable person would own, and would have feuds with neighbors who owned Volvos. Such a good read!

Thanks Hatoolah for the entertaining blog and Beth for the puzzle!

Happy 85th birthday Lucina - and hope your car gets repaired soon and your granddaughter mends quickly1

  9. Good morning, crossword friends. I was surprised that several of today's entries were repeats from last Tuesday. A new arsenal of crossword staples, perhaps.

Careful reading in the tub with electronics, D-O! We don't want to hear about tub disasters.

I agree, Jinx, the expression "should" be Who'd'vd thunk.

QOD: A wise man will take a woman’s advice even if he doesn’t understand it. ~ Agnes Moorehead (née Agnes Robertson Moorehead; Dec. 2, 1900 ~ Apr. 30, 1974), American actress

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh and I forgot to add - SAABs quit being made in 2014 - so Ove is probably rolling over in his fictitious grave!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Took 5:54 for me to finish, but ironically, I was not wowed by this puzzle.

I didn't know today's female spokesmodel (has "spokesmodel" become acceptable?), today's female actresses (Alia and Glazer), and today's female tv character (Sansa). Conversely, I did know today's female singer, today's female media mogul, and today's female cosmetician.

    ReplyDelete
  12. For a Tuesday puzzle this was a GOOD ONE.

    Again no inkovers.

CW continues to provide free advertising for ETSY and ADELE. The OBOE sets the pitch? And I thought there was nothing left to learn about it. (Does the Oreo set the cookie standard?)

The never made sequel to "Thelma & Louise" would have involved ...parachutes 🤣

"Saints" can't FEAST on their own FEAST day.
For 110 years and counting we have had a huge out door Saints day FEAST in the Fall: Sts Cosmas & Damian .. procession, rides, lots of food to FEAST on.

From a recent puzzle we know its WHOD and not whomd. 😆

    Trésor/Sastre? Huh?

Stars in a one man show...ACTSALONE
    60's TV Tarzan Ron...EELY
    Street beginning....ESTEE
    Free range trousers: _____ - belt...SANSA

Last night I saw the film "Lady Chatterley's Lover" on Netflix. It shoulda been called " "Lady Chatterley! Cover (up)!" and given an XXX rating...Yikes. 😳

  13. Good Morning:

I really liked this theme right out of the blocks with Thelma’s “Wow!”?=Geez Louise and all of the others except Good One. I think this entry took a little shine off the puzzle. Who’d was just plain ugly and Eely ran a close second. Alia, Sansa, Ines, and Sync, as clued, were all unknowns and, IMO, not Tuesday level references. OTOH, I thought the cluing was noticeably successful with fresh takes on several ubiquitous answers. The fill was lively and the pesky three letter words were minimal so, overall, an enjoyable solve.

Thanks, Beth, for a fun and clever theme and thanks, Hahtoolah, for another tip-top review. Loved all of the cartoons, especially the Poetry writing cat and the Duck, Turkey, Pig survivors and the Penultimate “Bad” Cat. I enjoyed the video of Richard Gere and while he’ll never win any singing contests, he is a multi-talented actor, IMO, and, course, Reneé Zellwegger shares the same accolades. Thanks for the CSO, too. ☘️

    IH @ 7:55 ~ I loved A Man Called Ove, also.

Happy Birthday, dear Lucina, hope it’s festive and fun. 🎂🎉🎈🎊🎁 I hope your granddaughter is on the mend and that you’ll have your car back soon.

    FLN

You’re absolutely right, I couldn’t tell you what song those lyrics were from if my life depended on it. 🤣

  17. Oh wow!

I can't believe Google can't seem to find that old joke...

I was reminded of the movie, "Dances With Wolves"
Because of all the elegant Indian names.
    I.E.:
    Dances with wolves
    Stands with fist
    Kicking bird
    Wind in his hair
    Smiles a lot :)
    Etc...

There was an old Indian, when asked about these elegant names, mentioned the name of his wife, "5 horses."
How did you come up with such a pretty name?

    Easy, he replied,

    Nag Nag, Nag Nag Nag...

  18. Musings
-Here’s what Beth had to tell us in my Saturday, 5/14/22 write-up.
-ALIA, GLAZER, SANSA, INÉS – Patti very seldom paints us into a corner with obscure names like this
    - I have PAID for restaurant meals for military members
    - I sub at my old high school, AHS, about which I have FOND memories. I’d like to relive them as was shown in the fun movie Peggy Sue Got Married
    - I have a Word template I use for subbing that I call up and RENAME to give that teacher feedback
    - Lee Harvey not only claimed he did not ACT ALONE but that he didn’t ACT at all
My barber of 30 years calls his shop Backstage REVUE and I have never asked him why
    - If constant NAGGING does not elicit a change in behavior, it’s time for Plan B
    - Buffalo Bills had to move their NFL game to Detroit because of snow but its new stadium will be open air
    - Nice job Hatoolah and I too wish Lucina a happy 85th, a mended granddaughter and car and nice lunch!

  19. Good Morning! Good puzzle overall - smooth sailing, but with a few unknowns. DNK 20A GLAZER; 44A SANSA or 36D INES. Perps to the rescue. Loved the Adele video. 20. Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Beth and Hahtoolah.
I FIRed in very good time, and enjoyed the dazzling themers. Favourite was OUT OF SIGHT. (I agree that GOOD ONE was a Meh!

Only one inkblot where I entered GEEZe Louis and ran out of space. Ok the E goes on the end!
    Any unknown names perped easily.

Thanks for the ESSO CSO Hahtoolah. Some Americans think we are all INUIT north of the border. LOL

    Happy Birthday Lucina.

Wishing you all a great day.

  21. Thank you Beth for an absolutely SUPERLATIVE, STELLAR, and STUNNING puzzle! The best I could do however was just a FIR.

And thank your Hahtoolah for your usual Tuesday hilarity.

    A few favs:

52A STRAW. But it's also a fire hazard!

57A UNLACE. The things we do for love.

    58A SYNC. 👎

1D PEGGY. Little known fact: Kathleen Turner got her BFA degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

31D OPRAH. Little known fact: she worked for several years at Baltimore's WJZ-TV before moving to Chicago and hitting the big time. Her successor at WJZ is named Bev, who goes to my church. She's one of our best lectors.

36D INES. She may be pretty obscure, but she IS pretty.

    Cheers,
    Bill

  26. Hi Y'all! I was WOWed by Beth's clever puzzle & cute theme. Thanks! More WOW from all Hahtoolah's music & giggle pictures. Thanks!

Hand up for trouble in the NW which filled last. DNK: ALIA, ASSAM, GEEZ LOUISE, GLAZER, ADELE's song. That ADELE has some PIPES. DNK SANSA. But then I couldn't think of the name of a game show host that I watch most days. Just once I'd like a puzzle with NO names in it. Probably never happen.

Thought Wimbledon was a "clay" court until GRASS perped in.

KIOSK was not a STore or STall, but a STAND.

  29. Late to post, as I had lots of stuff to do this morning. So, WEES, at this point. W/Os ETTA:EDDA, GOOD:FOND. I count 10 names, I knew about half. I did get the theme, and managed to FIR in 19, a bit long for a Tuesday. Waseeley @ 11:18 I looked at your “lacing” link: how terrible! Today women deform their feet and create bunions and corns, and sometimes damage their backs, wearing ridiculous high heels. My last few GFs did not wear make-up, and now women with lipstick seem clownish to me. I digress. Thanx for the fun CW, BR, and thanx too for your (as always) informative and fun write-up, Hahtoolah. HBD Lucina!

AMOHS: GEEZ LOUISE was my most favorite entry; GOOD ONE was my least favorite

Thanks for the puzzle, Beth - neat theme.
Thanks for the expo, Hahtoolah - Wow! What fun comics, music, & links.

    WOs: N/A
    ESPs: ALIA|LOU, EDDA, INES, SANSA

    Happy Birthday Lucina!

Waseeley & Yooper - I want to say Ursuline but I may be confusing that with the NUNs that taught me some classes my 1st two years of HS. Lucina is usually up late so, stay tuned.

I too loved A Man Called Ove and his SAAB ways. I just got Backman's The Winners even though I haven't finished Anxious People yet.

Glad to hear you're on the mend, C. Moe!

PK - I too thought clay. Tennis fans, what famous joint are we confusing Wimbledon with?

I went to a 3hr vendor event today. It promised to be technical CyberStuff*. The last 1/2 was nothing but a sales pitch for their new products. I felt trapped and didn't want a time-share either.

FIR. Some of the names were unknown, of course, but perps fixed most of them. There were some “educated” guesses (as opposed to WAGs), though. I had quite a few question marks in the margins as I was proofreading.

    Thanks, Beth and Hahtoolah!

  41. Thank you, everyone, for the warm birthday wishes! Because my family and friends came to my side to wish me a happy birthday and I went not only to breakfast with my sister but to dinner with my main man, Mark, the day turned out very well. And my daughter has promised me another dinner on the weekend.

And you, my cyber friends, have added to my pleasure.

Thank you, Dave, for the beautiful birthday cake! Since I can't eat real cake, that one brings me great pleasure.

I haven't seen my car but on the police report the officer wrote "wrecked" so what can I infer from that! A new car was not in my sights and I hoped that the one I had would last me for many more years. It had low mileage and WAS in good shape.
