That wraps up this Wednesday. Hope I didn't string you along. Have a joyous, blessed and food-filled Thanksgiving. See you all in January. Go Lions!
Cool regards!
JzB
This puzzle seemed to me to have the right level of difficulty; not too much, but just enough to make it worthy of being a Wednesday puzzle. I think the first clues across and down are a good example of that. Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteNEATO at 1a didn't make the grade. (Have I ever mentioned...?) NEAT finally did appear at 56a. Didn't we have CAMEOS, clued the same, just a few days ago? Nice mid-week adventure, Amy. Esoteric expo as usual, Jzb. (Infauna, Hastilude, Metonic cycle, I'm lookin' at you! Enjoy your month off.)
WINTER : I picked up a foot-warmer a few years back when it was on sale at Wally-World. Basically, it's a heating pad, wide as a queen-size bed, with three heat settings. We used it last night.
Re: cameo clue. I noticed the same thing. That happens a lot I feel. How do different people come up with the same words at the same time?
DeleteFIR without erasure. I knew LENO, CHER and HEDY, but none of the other show biz stuff. Knew Griner from her drug smuggling fiasco. I like TV docs, especially Pol and Oakley.
ReplyDeleteToday is:
NATIONAL TIE ONE ON DAY (celebrates the apron as well as the past generations of women who wore them. I like JzB’s strings better)
NATIONAL JUKEBOX DAY (Van Halen’s Jump includes “I’ve got my back to the record machine.” Wonder how old you have to be to understand that)
NATIONAL CRANBERRY RELISH DAY (none for me, thanks)
I wonder why there isn’t a JFK assassination remembrance day today.
12 bottles of wine in a CASE, 12 hours between noon and midnight. Coincidence?
Today was supposed to be our Thanksgiving celebration, since some family has to travel tomorrow. But the patriarch is seriously ill, so this will be a meal and reunion of sorts and a memory of a great man who will be missed by all who knew him.
Thank you, Amy Johnson, and thank you, JzB.
ReplyDeleteI liked it.
The answer to "Knight game" went from chess to hoops (Bobby) to JOUST.
Other than typing errors, that may have been the only change.
At 14A NOELS you commented "Nope - still too soon." On Nov 2nd at 4PM, Chicago's 93.9 LITE-FM began playing around-the-clock holiday music. For those that can't get enough, you can tune in for the Yuletide tunes online at 93.9 LITE FM
At that point, I still hadn't stored my Halloween decorations, and the Butterball Turkey Hotline had been opened up for calls, emails and texts for only one day.
But I guess if you are into it, you are into it. A neighbor down the street has had his yard and house fully decorated for Christmas since he took down his Halloween stuff the day after. Lights go on at dusk every night. I'm in the "Nope - still too soon" camp on that one.
FIR. The only thing that could have made this puzzle less enjoyable would have been the presence of circles. So many proper names, way too many. And even two crossing with Ito and Ross. Giant NO-NO.
ReplyDeleteThe theme was clever and the unifier really helped a lot. But overall, this CW was not for me!
Took 5:23 today for me to say cheese.
ReplyDelete(string cheese, anyone?)
I'm with KS. Then again, I'm usually with anyone who puts down those dreaded circles in a crossword puzzle.
I knew today's actress (Hedy) but not today's other actress's role (Amy). I knew today's WNBA answer. I didn't know the architecture critic (Inga), and I'd complain about that clue, but because she's evidently a prize-winner, I am to assume it's fair game. But come on, "architecture critic"? What's that job entail - poking fun at buildings?
Happy Thanksgiving Eve, everyone.
Seriously? Specs for construction of foundations in earthquake country, erosion of cliffs at the shore, fire-resistance in prone areas, etc.
DeleteYes, chess b/4 joust...
ReplyDeletestrings attached?
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteThis was a cute theme but the early reveal placement lessens the suspense and enjoyment of discovering the theme, IMO. My only stumble was Chess/Knight (Hi, TTP!) and the unknowns were Inga, Amy, and Ike. (Sounds like a Pop group!) I wasn't keen on I'm Hip or the plural Whits but I did appreciate the low (11) three letter word count and some clever cluing. As Scamps is interchangeable with Imps, CSO to CEH and a CSO to SubB whose cute Koala avatar brings a smile every day. And Omar Sharif will certainly bring a smile to Lucina!
Thanks, Amy, for a fun romp and thanks, JazzB, for the always witty and highly informative review. Enjoy the holidays and your time off from your blogging duties.
I'm sure most of us remember clearly the sad and tragic events of 60 years ago today. 🙏🇺🇸
SubG, of course!
ReplyDeleteJust a heads up:
ReplyDeleteTemu, who has been responsible for those giant pop up ads on the Blog, is being sued for stealing identity data.
you may want to be careful when navigating the blog that you don't accidentally click on their ads
TTP,
Do you know if the Blog Admin can have any choice in what ads are being shown?
Anywho, do you own research, and decide for yourself about Temu...
NEAT puzzle. Just a few unknown names that easily filled with perps.
ReplyDeleteJzB. Lots of interesting info. I appreciate it. All our reviewers do a remarkable job to supplement the CW.
I’m confused about WHITS. I have IOTAS.
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteThan you Amy (nice putting your name in the grid at 59d) for the puzzle. And thank you JzB for all the extra expo info / learning.
WO: cheSs -> JOUST
ESPs: INGA, IKE, SCOTT, ROSS, TITO
Fav: HEDY - she invented frequency hopping and is to thank for your WiFi.
//Oh, and Mel paid her homage in Blazing Saddles.
CED - The ads you see are based on your browsing history / Google's algorithm. I've never seen Temu ads on Blogger (or anywhere else) but then, I guess, that will change since I watched your video ;-)
Youngest came in Friday and Eldest flew in last night -- our house is now whole.
Y'all have a great day!
Cheers, -T
Musings
ReplyDelete-Me too, Irish.
-Although he was talented and highly paid, Andrew Luck quit the Indianapolis Colts in his prime because he had been SACKED 174 times and suffered multiple injuries
-NBC tired of dealing with Letterman and so they gave The Tonight Show to LENO
-Teachers can get tired of dealing with SCAMPS in a classroom too
-College coaches are searching out what players they can get through the transfer PORTAL this time of year
-How can I ACT my age? I’ve never been this AGE before!
-Some pro athletes burn through enormous amounts of money and wind up broke after quitting the game
-Even our modest house has an I-BEAM to support the main floor
-Brittney Griner had chosen not to stand for the National Anthem before here WNBA games. Now, many months in a Russian prison, she stands. She said her perspective changed and she sees her country and flag in an entirely different manner.
Pretty easy for Wednesday. The theme didn't matter, things fell together seamlessly. Anything I wasn't sure about filled quickly with perps. Happy Thanksgiving All. GC
ReplyDeleteHola!
ReplyDeleteNice! Thank you, AMY Johnson! I loved seeing GO FLY A KITE and, yes, IrishMiss, I swoon at the thought of OMAR Sharif. He was sooooo handsome! In a way, he resembled my late DH.
WINTER is a season that lately I've only heard about and read about and in fact, there is skiing north of us in Flagstaff. Actually, when I lived in Denver, I experienced WINTER in a big way with lots of snow.
WINTER is also a detective in some Midsomer Murders episodes.
Why "bygone TV attachment"? Some of us sill have one.
The only time I see TOLLS is when I visit my friend in northern California.
Lots to do today. Have a lovely day, everyone!
Tony, I'm so happy for you that your girls are home.
ReplyDeleteNot yet getting too hard as the week progresses. Interesting theme: but VIOLA stumped me for a couple normal rhythm heart beats, did her EGOT come with STRINGS ATTACHED?? No it’s the 🎻…. Her fav role was in “How to Get Away With Murder”
ReplyDeleteINGA Saffron? who? …We just had an AHA moment in a recent CW, the 80’s band A-Ha.
First thought was sockPUPPET. Would 12 bottles of wine in a case equal a hundred bottles of beer on the wall? 😄 (‘twood be a much shorter song)
I was thinking waaay beyond bygone TV attachment, almost put ant for Antenna (figuring “TV” is an abbrev.) The DVD player is next up for extinction.
Always fergit Midori’s first name but even though I didn’t know the answer, with the partial perp R _SS it hadda be ROSS ergo ITO
Haven’t seen STOA In awhile.
⳩ ….. CAIRO
BSA summer abodes…..TENSE
”A lady in a tournament?” “Shirley you ___ “ ….. JOUST
JazzB thanks for all the research:
Your knowledge is En-PSYCHO-lo-pedic 🧐
Monkey @ 9:59 ~ 24D is Whits and 41A is Iotas, both clued as Small Bits.
ReplyDeleteAnon T @ 10:05 ~ "Our house is now whole." Beautifully said, Tony.
FIR, with no real problems, despite this being more of a crossNAME puzzle. At least the perps were fair. Seriously, you an get prizes for criticizing other people's building designs? More of those who can, do, and those who can't, criticize? I was in sophomore English class when word came that Kennedy had been shot. The day came to a complete halt. My parents told me that for their generation, the news of Pearl Harbor hit the same way.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon-T,
ReplyDeleteI turned off personalized ads for blogger, will let you know how it works out...
Wait, what? Someone I never heard of (13d) made a film Youngest is making a point of us to see this weekend; from the NYT newsletter [emphasis mine]...
ReplyDeleteThe emperor’s hats: When the costume designer David Crossman got a job on Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon,” which is out today, he had to recreate Napoleon Bonaparte’s iconic bicorn hats with a modern twist: Joaquin Phoenix, the film’s star, is vegan and doesn’t wear animal products. As a result, the hats in the film are made from Ugandan tree bark, which Crossman said gives them a texture that synthetic fabrics couldn’t match.
I'll go back to my hole now. -T
After seeing Ron's BIKINI BOTTOM photos (all perps for that fill) I figured Splynter did the write-up. Puzzle was easy and only one of those bikinis had STRINGS ATTACHED. Probably decoration. But I've never watched Sponge Bob or any of the shows with the unknown people listed below.
ReplyDeleteLENO? Didn't know that; was expecting GROUCHO MARX.
ROSS, INGA Saffron, IKE, AMY, PELT- didn't know those people.
But I did know ITO, TITO, & HEDY.
Yesterday I bought a CASE of Blue MOON and a dozen oranges. Good beer.
The WNBA's Griner's org.- Russian prison, aka Gulag. Influential people? Don't make me laugh. Carrying dope into Russia. How stupid can you be. About as 'influential' as the Euphoria girl the other day. Their fifteen minutes of fame. It's 'time for TIME magazine' to give it up on that and their 'Person of the Year'. Secretariat won it one time, when people actually subscribed to Time.
"Go fly a kite, go play in the traffic, shut the door from the outside,...get lost". I'm sure there are many others that I can't recall off the top of my head.
Enjoyed the STRINGS theme. A few crossed proper names. Plus cross of unknown SACK and IKE. Learning moment about BIKINI BOTTOM. DW is a Sponge Bob fan. FIR.
ReplyDeleteHere DW and I struggle to open the secret PORTAL I call the Harry Potter DOOR.
When I lead this hike, I catch people as they come through the passage and have them turn around. To see that the DOOR has closed behind them! It is startling!
From Yesterday:
Jinx, AnonT Thank you for the additional MEN's room signs. I did some more searching regarding the Ford's Garage signs.
Here is a video of that MENs room DOOR that shows the clever construction that freaks people out.
Thanks for the tip!
CrossEyedDave,
ReplyDeleteIt is extremely unlikely (almost impossible) that any Ad you see on a Google product (Blogger) that is being passed through Google's ad server is going have any kind of embedded malware.
An ad may have been compromised with malware on some other site, but it is not likely to get through Google's servers and loaded on their products. See:
https://support.google.com/My-Ad-Center-Help/answer/12155361?hl=en&visit_id=638362691064467227-1607573506&p=identity_verification&rd=2#identity_verification.
Also see
https://safety.google/intl/en/privacy/ads-and-data/
You can still report any ad that you believe is dangerous.
As Dash T said, some of the the ads you see are based Google's estimation of your interests. It's called Interest Based advertising. It's also called Online Behavioral advertising.
But not all of the ads you'll see are based on your general browsing history. They just show up, based on nothing you've done.
You can start getting different ads if you don't like what you are seeing.
One way to start anew would be to open your browser's setting and clear all cookies and cache. You can also selectively remove cookies.
Sometimes you will get ads from other Google Ad partners, and they may or may not have anything to do with your browsing history. Google ad partners participate in the Digital Advertising Alliance.
You can run a report that will tell you which companies are using online behavioral advertising. Run this WebChoices tool:
https://optout.aboutads.info/?c=2&lang=EN
And as you can infer from the URL, you can also Opt Out.
If you are on a smartphone, go to:
https://youradchoices.com/appchoices
to download the tool.
ReplyDeleteMy best wishes for a great Thanksgiving Day to one and all.
Lucas Davenport, John Sandford's Twin Cities "tec" has a wife named Weather.
ReplyDeletePicard - good to see that they realized that WOMEN should have been painted in mirror image.
I forgot to thank Amy and JzB. Thanks, Amy and JzB.
BigE - I've also heard "Take a long hike off a short cliff." :-)
ReplyDeleteCool Potter Cave Pic, Picard.
Going back to BigE - DW traveled to Russia (before 2nd Ukraine invasion - got me a cool (then) garrison cap w/ lots of pins & patches at a novelty shop) and...
Her buddy had sleeping aides on her.
Oy! EVIL dogs and guards and circles & paragraphs on the back of each to explain what each one was (to hear her (or Arlo*)) tell it.
They were held for ~two hours b/f DW's buddy found the Rx saying all was cool.
//And did DW pack her own bag of swag?... Oy! There was a "Lone Star" banner in the under-lining.
Her assistant has since been SACK'd.
DW did enjoy her trip and the wonderful people & sites until the last meal with bountiful seafood.
The oysters were not kind and she barfed all over attendants in the airport in Japan (much like Bush) and had to stay an extra day in a hotel to recover. Her buddy nursed.
Blue MOON is meh w/o the orange slice.
TTP said - "But not all of the ads you'll see are based on your general browsing history. They just show up, based on nothing you've done."
On nothing I've done? I'll tell that to DW next time women's undergarments show up in my feed** ;-)
Cheers, -T
*It's Thanksgiving - spin Alice's Restaurant
**Um, thanks JzB :-)
Dave, BTW, I was going to make a comment in my 6:53 AM comments but chose not to. I was going to remark that I was surprised that Jinx didn't have any cheeky comments about JzB's image at 46A. But I wasn't sure that cheeky was the right word. By then, I had already clicked on the image to see where it came from.
ReplyDeleteMuch later, when I read your comments about the Temu ad, I went back to the main page to check something on one of the ads that I was getting. There was a new ad there for some diet that Kelly Cuoco of Bing Bang Theory had been on, and something about how she had to reduce her bikini size.
Dash T, :>). Yes, and you can show her. Run the DAA tool, and show her that ad agencies don't all use online behavioral targeting. Not that she's going to fully believe you...
IM☘️ Thank you for clearing up my confusion about WHITS. My lame excuse is that I must have gotten the answer from perps annd didn’t even notice it and by the time I read the recap, I had discarded my puzzle.
ReplyDeleteNice that you remembered today’s sad anniversary.
Jinx Yes, it indeed has to be mirror image. A still photo doesn't capture it as well as a video. Was the photo you posted your own, or one that you found? This video is one that I found.
ReplyDeleteAnonT Thank you for the kind words! Unfortunately, we had a big fire in that area about ten years ago. The fire didn't damage that spot, but the firefighters cut down all the brush so they didn't have to go through that narrow passage. It ruined much of the effect. The brush will never grow back, because most hikers keep following the path of least resistance around the passage.
This puzzle zipped along which I fit in during 2 year old granddaughter's nap who we are visiting.
ReplyDeleteInteresting of the women who have completed the EGOT awards like VIOLA DAVIS - 3 are African American women (also Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson), 2 are white women (Helen Hayes and Audrey Hepburn) and 1 is Latina (Rita Moreno)
Thanks JzB and Amy!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone
When did Latino become Non-white Last I checked she was a Spanish person from Puerto Rico.
DeleteFYI
ReplyDeleteSince I cancelled personal ads,
The latest ads were for social security, and ceiling fans...
(Go figure.)
At least it's not Temu anymore, and the blog loads faster...
Remembering what happened 60 years ago today. Actually, come to think of it, it's likely none of us will ever know what REALLY happened. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing at that moment. I did weep.
ReplyDeleteOh, the puzzle? Meh.
Good wishes to you all for a happy Thanksgiving day.
@5:17p - When did Italians become white? :->)
ReplyDelete//JzB - I just got an ad for bras for "small sizes." Wonder what that means ;-)
Gobble, Gobble. -T
Thanks, AMY for your puzzle. I enjoyed how you "tied" it all up. BIKINI BOTTOM was the only themer where the whole phrase could be described as having STRINGS ATTACHED.
ReplyDeleteHands up for cheSs before JOUST.
I especially enjoyed JzB's write-up today! The Mary Poppins clip was perfect! Other notables: Act Your Age music video, TITO soaking in the spotlight music video, and Midori ITO video. We'll miss you in Dec., JzB. Enjoy the holidays!
H-Gary @ 10:16. Yes, I noticed that, too. Seeing how things are in other countries can change one's perspectives of their lives at home. If traveling isn't an option, the library is full of books that show a different view.
RE: CED & Temu. TTP et al, in households with multiple devices, can't the router's IP address play a roll in which ads the household receives? In other words, I was under the impression that my searches affect DH's ads because we share the same router? (Sidenote: because of this blog, my searches are all over the place. The spy in the sky is having a hard time pinning my interests down. Muwahaha!)
sumdaze - IP address is only a small data-point mostly indicating your ISP. Take a look at your cookies one day [in Chrome: "chrome://settings/cookies"] -- you'll be surprised at all the ad-trackers crumbled about.
ReplyDelete//and LOL about Blogging-duties searches - I just saw I have 43 potterbarnkids.com cookies for an up-coming expo.
-T
Sumdaze, it's really all about the cookies. It could be pure coincidence that you and your husband get the same ads, or it could be that you once browsed some sites using your husband's computer while he was signed on, or he yours.
ReplyDeleteThe WAN IP addresses (wide area network) from ISPs are mostly dynamic. That is, they are assigned to your router each time you power it on. You can also change your WAN IP with some form of reset/renew command so you don't have to power down.
You could power cycle your router to demonstrate that it's the cookies rather than the IP address. You'll continue to get the same type of targeted ads that you received before.
