Here's the Grid:
Definitely a fair number
ReplyDeleteof obscurities, “Zakat,” “Mazie,” and “Dashi” immediately come to mind, as well as the clue for “PSU.” However, the perps were fair and the reveal made sense, after a few minutes of staring at the themed answers.
FIR, so I’m happy.
I don’t see Zakat - what am I missing?
DeleteStill on Hotspot this morning. The Comments page looks weird. Is that a feature of my connection, or has Blogger changed something?
ReplyDeleteNoticed all the guys. D-o ate at a Five Guys one time in AZ, S. Power Rd in Mesa methinks. EGO is becoming a regular visitor to the corner -- doubt that Husker still rates it #1, though. Only needed the Wite-Out to correct graTER to ZESTER. Nice outing; thanx, Joe and Hahtoolah. (Loved the Dishes.)
Hope the Hotspot feature works well for you. That's what I use during our winter trips to Florida. Ours works just fine, but I have a 30 GB cap. (testing my "nested replies" assumption.)
Deleted-o I believe the format has changed on the comments section, mine is totally different on my iPad.
DeleteFIR, but erased eco for EGO. I'm a Greenworks man myself.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if folks entering the job market these days only know of BROKEN RECORD as something to do with sports.
FIVE GUYS is pretty good, but pricey for what you get IMO. Here they have peanuts in the shell for your enjoyment while you wait for your order.
I knew about GSN because for a while DW could be entertained by watching People Puzzler.
I've been into KEIRA since I first saw her in some kind of "friends behind bars" movie.
OK, we have HAD A GAS, and Ha2la's knife cuts the cheese. Coincidence?
I liked NET crossing VET. LORDE crossing DASHI, not so much.
Where's my preview? I apologize in advance if this post looks even more disorganized than usual - I make heavy use of preview.
Looks like we can reply to individual comments now, rather than the "add-on-at-the-bottom" method we're used to. As Jimmy Buffett sang,
"Will it eve make sense, will it ever ring a bell?
Only time will tell."
Thanks to Joe for the solid Wednesday puzzle, and to Ha2la for another fine explanation of said grid.
Yes, the comments section has changed. Looks like for good.
ReplyDeleteIt was this way very early yesterday morning, and then they changed it back.
If you want to go back to the old version of comments, all you have to do is
"all you have to do is..." What?
DeleteTook 7:41 to finish today, dudes.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Mazie or Dashi, but I knew today's actresses (Keira & Rosie), though mostly knew Keira from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Heck, I even knew the actor (Clive).
I've enjoyed Five Guys burgers, but it is pricey.
Definitely a format change to the Corner.
Personally, I’d don’t care for the new “format” change. It looks ‘unwieldy’ to me, at least at this point.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning:
ReplyDeleteSome changes are for the better, some not. This new format falls into the latter category, IMO.
Continuing on in my bad humor, a cute theme and reveal was spoiled for me by the abominable Stales, which I'm still shaking my head at. Dashi and Had A Gas weren't exactly pleasing either, Dashi being unknown and Had A Gas so dated it's almost archaic.
Joe's puzzles are usually fun, enjoyable solves, but not today, for me, due to above mentioned flaws. My overall reaction is One Bad Apple Spoils the Whole Barrel. 😔
Thanks, Joe, and thanks, Hahtoolah for the fun, facts, and cute comics.
Have a great day.
Seemed a little crunchier than a usual Tuesday grid as it took me 18 minutes for the FIR. Perps got me ALMS, LADDER STITCH, MAZIE and EEYORE (after which I had to look up “dolorous” which is not in my vocabulary). Like anon SS I did know CLIVE and ROSIE. The “D” in LORDE/DASHI was a WAG. We’ve had a little music education lately, today’s key being G SHARP. Have only seen “stale” as an adjective, not as a verb, in past tense or present participle. The BIG TEN (stylized B1G) hasn’t had ten schools for a while, with expansion to the west coast including Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA there are now 18. ENTOMOLOGY was a cool word to see in a puzzle. DW just used a ZESTER yesterday en route to making a Greek marinade, filling the house with a most pleasant scent. Thanks Joe D for the clever grid and Hahtoolah for your delightful recap!
ReplyDeleteDW was zesting lemons
DeleteIt would be nice if the new format would allow for the editing of a comment, much like you can do with a FB comment, but it still offers only a deletion option.
ReplyDeleteFIW. Today's puzzle had some crunchiness to it. Unusual for a Tuesday, more fitting for a Thursday, but that's been a pattern so far this week.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know GSN, and thought B-sharp made sense. Although stales still doesn't make sense to me.
Took a WAG at dashi and got it right. Crossing with Lorde was just mean.
I got the theme and it was clever. But overall I did not enjoy today's presentation. Yuk!
I thought SSA crossing PSU was cruel.
ReplyDeleteHad a lot of issues with this one.
ReplyDeleteNever have I heard anyone say "Had a gas" . Also crossing Lorde with Dashi really messed up this corner for me. , using Elfinto describe someone petit and playful is just wrong. Counted 20 proper nouns.
The format doesn’t seem to have changed on my iPhone, only on my iPad, and I assume desktops and laptops too?
ReplyDeleteYP from my iPhone, not the anonymous @8:43
DeleteRe Five Guys Prices: Had a friend complain his wife and teenage son spent $48 for the two of them. How could that be?!? I hadn’t been there since my own daughter was a teenager (“several” years ago) and I thought it was pricey then. But $48? So I checked the online menu…HOLY COW!!! (that must be what they get the meat from). I’d rather buy a decent bottle of scotch instead.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, agree with the general sentiment…pretty crunchy for a Tuesday.
Read the Blog every day but don't comment much anymore. My computer has been acting up lately and I thought maybe it was me. I too do not like the new format. I wonder what Ray-O 's comments will look like ?
ReplyDeleteOh, and no avatars on the right side.
ReplyDeleteI too noticed the awkward changes. Maybe I’ll get used to them. TTP said we could go back to the old format but stopped short of saying how.
ReplyDeleteAs for this CW, i started out gang busters, then mid way i started encountering all these unknowns like MAZIE, ROSIE, DASHI. CLIVE is the only know name.
I thought of entering HAD A ball, but didn’t fit. I don’t like the actual answer. The weirdness of the CW distracted from its really neat theme.
Now my first sentence is not visible. I don’t know if it’s still there or not. It was about the changes which make the comment sections awkward. I’m using an i
Pad.
Whoa! What the heck!
ReplyDeleteI hate when they change things, it's like moving the furniture around in Helen Kellers house! Not nice... in addition to font, the quantity of posts is missing from the begining, and the posting box is all but gone.
The puzzle?
I agree with BobB, ssa/psu was more than cruel. It only took 26 tries to nail that middle letter...
At least I didn't have to play whack a mole with the theme...
Hey! THE PREVIEW BOX IS MISSING!?!.
Re: oak for barrels
ReplyDeletedo not mix up red oak with white oak for wood projects!
The famous ghost ship, The Mary Celeste, was finally explained by the above mix up. They were carrying barrels of alcohol. Some of which were red oak that leaked creating explosive fumes that blew off the cargo hatch causing the crew to abandon on ship. The ship sailed on but they died somewhere mid ocean. see clip at 2:30 for what and why
More can be found here , if interested...
FIW with ONE "small square" in box 8 -- wasn't sure which note to pick for the SHARP, and never heard of GSN. Although I did solve 59 Down, "small square," I needed Anonymous at 4:46 AM to explain it.
ReplyDeleteI thought the theme had gone awry with BROKEN RECORD, because a bloke is a guy, but a BROKE is not. Thanks, Hahtoolah, for showing me that it was simply BRO.
DH insisted on going to Five Guys a couple of times when it appeared in our neighborhood. Because we're vegetarian, we were limited to peanuts, fries, and condiments on hot dog buns. I've managed not to return, and didn't know it had gotten so pricey.
Pretty challenging for a Tuesday! I hope the rest of my day has a different summary. Thanks, everyone!
Greetings! Somewhat of a slog for me today.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the search for theme is tied to the enjoyment of the puzzle itself. Today was a non-starter to seek and as revealed, proved true.
Perps weren’t in place to help me with DASHI, CLIVE. Google to the rescue.
First I've heard about a format change. Will try & figure it out.
Thanks, Ha2lah. Good save.
Hala!
ReplyDeleteNothing has changed in the format here so I'm not sure what the above complaints are about.
I'll start with my pet peeve which is mispronouncing PEREZ. The accent is on the first syllable, not the second, PE-rez, not pe-REZ. My great-grandmother's maiden name was PE-rez.
Thank you, Joe Deeney, for a nice puzzle. We haven't seen you in a while but it's nice to have one of your puzzles. And I liked seeing MANI-PEDI. I have one about every three weeks. Now that the prices have increased so much ($85!) it might be once a month.
There is A FIVE GUYS place not too far away though I've been there only once; I was not impressed. Wendy's has a much better burger, IMO.
I love the name MAZIE.
My sister, Yoli, lives not too far from CHAPEL HILL in Charlotte, NC.
Have a lovely day, everyone!
Desper-otto, Monkey, that was my attempt at humor.
ReplyDeleteTo all, this is the "new" Comments User Interface (UI) that Blogger started rolling out in late April, early May of 2022.
At that time, many blogspots saw this new UI regardless if they were on their desktops, laptops, tablets and or smartphones. At that time, Crossword Corner only got the new UI on smartphones, and I started reporting the defects on May 1, 2022.
It appears that they have finally rolled the commenting UI out to the Corner for desktop, laptop and tablet users. So it appears we are stuck with it.
Smartphone users will probably not see any differences from what they've had for the last 2.25 years.
FWIW, there is a ? mark in the upper right corner of the comments page. If so inclined, you can express your thoughts about this UI by taking the "Send Feedback" option.
Finally FIR (with red letters!). Today, the clues were not from my universe. No fun, except for Ha2las review.
ReplyDeleteIf Lucina is not seeing the new Comments User Interface, as well as the differences in the formatting of the reader comments on the comments page, then I suppose it is possible that this change has not been rolled out to the servers that handle the western time zones...
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the puzzle, even though I thought a few answers were kind of lame - stales, dashi. The theme was cute, as are most of Joe Deeney’s.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valley always me think of the unfortunate and scandulous finale to Joe Paterno’s illustrious career.
Chapel hill is 12 miles from Duke, my alma mater, and students went back and forth all the time. I love all things Winnie the Pooh, so Eeyore is an old friend. I loved “elfin”. Joe Ddeney always gives us interesting, a bit out of the ordinary clues to keep it interesting.
On my iPhone, the format seems the same. So, why was it changed, and who made the decision? Was it a Cornerite administrator?
Guess a Saturday clue for CHAPEL HILL would "research triangle corner." You and I would autofill it, but I'd bet some would find it to be a stumper.
Delete(As I mentioned, I miss "preview.")
Right!
DeleteNo, it was Blogger that made the change.
DeleteSorry for the typo - I guess we can’t edit any more??
ReplyDeleteYou never could edit your comments. You could preview, but never edit comments that were published.
DeleteMaybe the Corner (CC) should explore a different platform.
ReplyDeleteJinx, if you have a suggestion for C.C., I would advise you to send her an email. I don't think she spends much time reading through everyone's comments because she is so busy constructing. I personally doubt that she would consider making such a change, given the time and workload involved. But it is her blogspot, and she might if Blogger becomes untenable.
DeleteI know I have had my fill of Blogger, and am on the verge of quitting it altogether. It peeves me to no end that the problems I reported back in May of 2022 about the UI are still unresolved, and yet Blogger seems determined to force it on all users.
My format is back to normal with the avatars on the right and absent the reply button.
ReplyDeleteMine, too, Irish Miss. It's a wonderment.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI haven't noticed anything different about the UI. It all looks the same to me as it has for long time on my PC. I rarely use my Ipad to solve the puzzle and never use my phone.
No problem with PSU and Happy Valley. I happen to live in Happy Valley (Actually it's the Nittany Valley) and I can see the PSU stadium from my kitchen window. It's not always Happy when PSU loses a football game though.
I decided to test for myself whether or not the “format” had gone back to “normal “ and it has! For me and my iPhone. I, for one , hope it STAYS this way, but who knows what time will bring?
ReplyDeleteYeah, the Google Blogger programmers are playing around.
ReplyDeleteOn my laptop, I'm still getting the new commenting UI.
On my desktop, it is now back to what we were all used to.
oc4Beach, this is a screenshot of what so many of use have been seeing all day:
"Screenshot of the UI"
Treacherous Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Joe and Hahtoolah.
ReplyDeleteOfficially a DNF, because I had no clue about the middle letter in that Natick cross of PSU and SSA.
And I had already resorted to two Google lookups to try to break open in the south.
But I did see the Masculine theme, although I had FIVE boYS since I am not familiar with FIVE GUYS hamburgers.
I will claim Canadian disadvantage today with. MAZIE, CIN, BIG TEN, GSN, SSA (I only know SSN,).
Plus the unknown-to-me names like ROSIE, CLIVE.
DASHI was unknown - my Ecktorp thought was Miso. Nope.
I had some nits with clueing also.
TAKEN TO for “become smitten with” seems very awkward, both in meaning and tense.
I noted TAKEN TO and FREE UP, but then we had IS ONTO and UP HERE duplication.
Since when has a dress become a suit? Only when you define dress as apparel. Misdirection for a Tuesday.
HAD A GAS is really old-time slang IMO, (but we have been complaining about modern slang).
Thanks Anon@4:46 for explaining ONE square.
My Latin was useful today to give me EEYORE. Dolor, Dolores means grief, anguish, sorrow. The Via DOLORosa means Way of Suffering, and is used to describe the route Christ took to his crucifixion.
I’m not sure if the format has reverted before I arrived here, but I see no difference on my iPad.
Wishing you all a great day.
Big easy from phone.
ReplyDeleteMazie, Dashu, GSN, LADDER STITCH, LORDE All came from perps. When I saw the hamburger chain clue, I looked back and for a second thought that maybe I fillded broken record incorrectly, with a BLOKE being a British champ, and then I saw BRO.
I had heard of KEIRA but not how to spell her name. This was the crunchiest Tuesday puzzle I've seen in a while.
My total snake damages have added up to a little over $2,700, so far. I doubt I will file an insurance claim because . it doesn't meet my deductible
Fun Tuesday puzzle, many thanks for this treat, Joe. And your commentary is always a big help, so thank you for that too, Hahtoolah.
ReplyDeleteWell, when I saw AMPS and G SHARP, I figured we had a music theme for our attention today. But 'twas not to be, although I suppose one does get some music in the CHAPEL in some places. But, oh wait, I just realized we'd probably get some lovely music if we went to see Verdi's AIDA. Yes, that's what we ought to do. And there were a few little critters here and there: a PONY, a PET, and, of course, EEYORE. Good thing this puzzle had a VET (if a veterinarian) too.
Well, time for a nap. Have a lovely day, everybody.
Cheers, Margot
Sorry, forgot I'm MISTY on this blog. Hey, I'm 79--at that age, you sometime forget one of your own names.
ReplyDeleteMusings
ReplyDelete-After blogging so many of Joe’s themeless Saturdays, this was a fun walk in the park.
-Real and imaginary numbers are topics for us math peeps
-Dr. Suess’s Lazy MAYZIE took advantage of Horton the Elephant
-We had a dolorous colleague we all called EEYORE
-Cut the cheese cartoon was a hoot!
-Niles Crane is an uptight Jungian
-Yes, D-O, my EGO mower lasted only three years and a replacement battery was as expensive as a brand-new Toro gas-powered mower. I got the Toro.
-Rosie Perez played a Jeopardy savant in White Men Can’t Jump
Hi All!
ReplyDeleteWas I just tired or was the puzzle pretty crunchy for a Tuesday?
Thanks Joe for the diversion. Thanks Hahtoolah for the excellent writeup & comics.
WO: 8a - I was going for major or minor so I wrote in _M__OR. STOAT made it SHARP.
ESPs: KEIRA, MAZIE, LORDE, ROSIE, CLIVE
Fav: ENTOMOLOGY
I kept thinking ROSIE couldn't be right but BLOKE N RECORD is not a thing. I see NaomiZ & BigE had the same thought.
Anyone else read Harper Valley and want to enter PTA?
Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's A GAS.
Cheers, -T
I would say about this puzzle pretty much what many of you have already said.
ReplyDeleteThe last cell I filled was the G in GSHARP, not knowing GSN, after eliminating B, C, D, E, and F. It was also an alphabet run to fill that S crossing SSA and PSU.
BULLS-->GOATS.
Enjoyed reading Hahtoolah's write-up and all your comments.
This page looks the same on my Windows 11 PC, using the Edge browser, as it has for a long time. Later today I'll have a look at it on my iPad and iPhone.
ReplyDeleteFWIW,I post my comments on my PC laptop, EDT & I saw no change. Now I'm on my Kindle, still no change.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Joe for today's challenge! He squeezed six themed answers into a 15x15 grid. Wow!
ReplyDeleteFavs: Clue for EFF and the 23A & 31D pairing.
I guessed I missed the excitement. No changes for me here on the West Coast in the afternoon.
Thank you to Hahtoolah for another fun write-up! Yes, I fell for the "A flat" misdirection, too. I was surprised to learn of that RELIC. I also liked the GENT comic.
-T@4:42. Me, too, on the Harper Valley PTA!
ReplyDelete= )
Bayou Tony, Ill see your "Jumpin' Jack Flash, and raise you a Classical Gas by Mason Williams.
ReplyDeleteBTW, The Corner is back to the classical interface on laptop and desktop at Chez Jinx.
Went away for about 3 hours and bam, everything was back to normal. It's a mystery.!!
ReplyDeleteMine has not gone back to normal. In this UI i miss the rectangle i commented in. Now I feel unmoored.
ReplyDeleteI was so discombobulated this morning with the new format, I forgot to thank Hahtoolah for her charming recap.
Monkey, are you on a laptop or a desktop? My laptop has the "new" (circa 2002) UI, and my desktop has the legacy UI that so many of us are used to.
ReplyDeleteThis is so reminiscent of what Blogger did in 2020 when switching from Legacy Blogger to New Blogger, and what they have done with periodic updates. Some of us get the changes, and some do not. This has nothing to do with C.C.'s blog. It is Blogger's method for rolling out and field testing changes.
Circa 2020, the one they rolled out to Mobile (smartphone) users
DeleteI use an iPad.
DeleteMonkey, thank you.
ReplyDelete7pm est here, and I still show this new format.
ReplyDeleteMy avatar no longer looks anything like what I originally posted, I may have to change it. But what made me post is that if I had not gone back and reread some posts, I would never have known I was missing the replies. It's like half the blog has been hidden!
What now?,
Do I have to wait to the next day and go back and reread the entire blog just to see the replies that are now attached to the time of the original post and poster?
No, I don't like this at all....
CED, if you don't like the new format, then press the ? mark in the upper right corner, and then press submit comments to log your complaints. I can't tell you that it will do any good, but you can explain why it doesn't work for you.
ReplyDeleteSubmit Feedback, not comments.
DeleteFIR this crunchmaster but took quite a while. Solve was much earlier in the day but had things to do and no time to post a comment. By the time I got here the blog looked normal, so I completely missed the upset. Lots of names I DNK, and right dead-center, that "S" was a guess. SSA was all I could think of that might have baby names, but did not know about it. "Happy Valley" rang a bell but darned if I could connect it to a school in my mind. Lots of perps needed today, and lots of burning-o-the-braincells, but eventually got 'er done. Thanx JD for the massive challenge, due to all the names. Thanx Hahtoolah as always an informative and entertaining write-up. YP@8:03 I always check my post for errors before I hit "Publish" but STILL occasionally mess up. When I see embarrassing errors I copy the whole comment, then delete it, repost the comment, make the corrections, then republish. If there was a way to correct already published comments w/o doing all that, I never knew about it. And still don't.
ReplyDeleteThis page looks the same as it has always looked on my iPhone but looks different on my iPad. Yesterday’s looks as it always did on all my devices.
ReplyDeleteUnclefred, that is the only way. There is no edit except in Preview.
ReplyDeleteJayce, thanks.
CED @ 6:14. Just FYI... I am looking at the old format of Blogger on my computer and your avatar looks like it always looks.
ReplyDeleteIt seems I am not alone I thinking this was unusually crunchy for a Tuesday. My computer was on the fritz this morning, so I am late in posting.
ReplyDeleteI'm back and it's now the end of the day and everything still looks the same. However, as always, I enjoyed reading all your comments.
ReplyDelete
