Notes from C.C.:

1) I'm sad to tell you that we lost eddyB on Sept 15, 2012. He was 73 years old. Eddy actually left two posts on that day (4:16am & 4:47pm). His comments were always succinct, funny and often appeared cryptic to those who didn't know him. But he was a kind soul, always giving me timely response on any racing or hockey related fill. Thanks to Seen for the alert & Argyle for the research on Eddy's final posts on the blog.

2) Happy Birthday to Jayce, whose cheerful & caring comments I look forward to everyday. 生日快乐!

  1. Good morning, Argyle, C.C. and gang - surprisingly for a Monday, I came to a standstill almost immediately. 'Mead' was a gimme, then 'Meccas', then 'Apogee', and then......'data' for 4D, 'info'. Couldn't come up with anything reasonable to then fit 14A and 17A. Compound that with the fact that I consider 'exhort' to be synonymous with 'urge' and not 'caution earnestly', and I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. It took the 'cogent' in 20A for me to realize my mistake.s

Then at the opposite end, after getting the 'gro---' part of 45D, 'Produce producer', I came up with 'grocer', which at least didn't take long to correct. Not one of my better Mondays...

Argyle, a great write-up, as always, and a very Happy Birthday to Jayce.

Very sorry to hear about Eddy B - although he didn't much care for me (I think it was a bit of the Navy/Marine Corps rivalry), I always enjoyed his posts, and you could tell he was of good character. He'll truly be missed here on the blog, and if his family should read the blog, you have our heartfelt sympathy on your loss.
Maybe Chickie, JD, Warren and others who met him could tell us a bit more about him?

Damn, really sorry to hear about Eddy. That kinda makes anything else I wanted to say today seem petty and trivial.

  3. Howdy folks,

Nice start to the week with the only slow downs being self inflicted. Started with IRATE for 25A before ANGRY surfaced, BEDROOM instead of BEDSIDE for 33A & DIES before DIPS for 29A.

After reading Penman's Welsh trilogy, 1A MEAD was a gimme. Like to try one sometime. A visit to Wales is a biggie on my bucket list.

RIP Eddy B. You will be missed.

    Happy birthday Jayce.

    Everyone have a good week.

  5. Good Morning, Argyle and friends.

Like Barry said, hearing about EddyB rather makes other comments seem trite. EddyB was an interesting person with a unique perspective. I had been worried about him since we hadn't heard from him in a while.

  6. Good morning, folks. Thank you, Dave Sarpola, for a swell Monday puzzle. Thank you, as well, Argyle, for the swell write-up.

First, very sorry to hear about EddyB. Always enjoyed his commentary. He was an active guy with the puzzles and with his interaction with others. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family.

MEAD was easy for 1A. I think I have had a couple of those along the line. Not my cup of tea, or anything
    else.

Of course Intried DATA for 4D. Fixed that after a while to DOPE.

Tried YEN for 13D. EDO appeared later.

The themes came easily. Got THE DENVER MINT first.

SNOW at 35D reminds me that it is just around the corner. We had a frost in Illinois the other day, my wife informed me. She grabbed all the tomatoes at were left. The garden is done.

DEGAS came easily. I seem to remember his art from a class I took many years ago.

Off to my day in PA. It is currently 38 degrees.

    See you tomorrow.

  8. I'm sorry to hear of Eddy B.'s passing. He was a man of few words, but his comments were always interesting.

I still don't understand the theme, even after reading what Argyle wrote. Can someone help me?
Also, company doctors are called medics? I thought that was only in the military?

I apologize if my comments on the puzzle appear to be "trite", "petty" or "trivial", but an empty blog today seems silly to me and not what Eddy would want.

I just went back and read eddyB's last post on Sept.15th. @ 4:47pm
He mentioned that he killed a bottle of Macallan (scotch) the night before.

Ya know, I kinda like that.

As to the theme today: Just a play on the "sound-alike" sense, cents, scents.
    No biggie. Typical Monday fare.

    So tonight at Sunset:
My first 'toast' is to our friend eddyB.
The 2nd 'toast' is to Jayce, Happy Birthday.
And I'll have a 3rd 'toast' to all the nice people here.

A very happy birthday to always sunny and kind, Jayce. I look forward t o your posts every day.

Thanks for the expo and links, Argyle.

I took company to mean military company, so MEDIC was a gimmee.

I had to change data to DOPE. I thought of COGENT right away but waited to get ARGUMENT because COGENT seemed heavy for a Monday.

I didn't see the theme. Thanks, Argyle.

Saddened to hear about EddyB's passing. He was part of this group's mosaic. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Liked, and agree with, Argyle's take on the theme. Blew through the first two theme phrases right away, and the shorter fill followed quickly. Worked the S backwards, got FACTORY, and had to find something to go with it. The perps were virtually all mutually supportive, making this an easy Monday. No lookups, strikethroughs and no nits.

On a happier note: Happy Birthday, Jayce.

    moolah in Munich

  30. R.I.P. Eddy B. My sincere condolences to his family.

Considering that the overwhelming majority of this posting group is senior citizens, I guess it is only to be expected that we will all be going off, at a pretty much rapid pace ... as inexorably as an actuary's mortality table. And since people will not remember your face, they will only remember you by your posts.... Soo .... be nice and considerate ...

Thank you Dave Sarpola, for a very nice puzzle and dear Argyle, whose comments are as welcome and mouth watering as Pavlov's dinner bell.

I was thinking, if I could add one more homonym to the theme ...

    It makes sans ..... BY GOING WITHOUT ? ( 14 letters - )

(I must be getting better at xwords ... )

In days of yore, when I collected coins, I learnt that the Denver Mint had a small capital 'D', on the obverse face of the coin, to the lower right of the portrait, but the Philadelphia Mint had no mint mark at all. But now they put a 'P'... except for silver dollars, which put the mint mark on the reverse side, under the legend, center bottom, of 'SF' San F'risco, 'CC' Carson City and so on.

Argyle, as for any other ominous 'ides' - how about the ides of April - April 15th ?

I always picture the Corner denizens as a group of friends kibitzing around a large table in a lounge. We have a common bond in loving words and crosswords. We bring diverse interests to the table. We share our views on life. We support each other in our trials and triumphs. We have differences of opinion, but we have very little friction. That makes our group interesting, as well as simpatico. We are a true virtual community. I eagerly look forward to sitting at the table with you daily.

  36. The wedding was just fabulous, no exaggeration. On a scale of one to ten, at least a fifteen! And Minnesota, which I believe must be an Indian word meaning "freezing my buns off" with its scenic beauty and lakes with real water in them! We cruised on Lake Minnetonka, went to visit the nonexistent falls in Fergus Falls and shopped til we dropped (literally) at the MOA as the locals call it. Even croosed the state border to Sillwater, WI, a quaint old town.

In deference to me, their older sister, my sisters and I went on the Ferris wheel which can you believe it, is called El Circulo al Cielo (circle to the sky)? That's the only ride I will go on.

  47. Enjoyable puzzle, Mr. Sarpola. Great commentary & links, Argyle. Thought the puzzle was harder than usual Monday. I struggled with the NW.

I never can remember APOGEE--wanted "azimuth". Don't like DOPE as "info". Knew MEAD, got MECCAS the third time through. What kind of STEAK?

DEGAS is one of my favorite artists. I had two ornately framed ballerina pictures in my daughters' room when they were little. Couldn't find them after we got to the farm. 31 years later when I was going through everything to move again, I found those prints. Intended to bring them with me, but watched them sell at my auction--they got in the wrong box again. Oh well....

48a: I had a friend in LaMesa, CA that I visited, but LAAAA Mesa didn't look right.

I'm not sure the younger generation calls it "typing". My sons took a "keyboarding class" and still "key in" stuff. My girls went to college with a typewriter they had to share in 1983 & '85. My youngest son had to have an Acer computer to go to college in 1994.

  48. Hello everybody.

So sad that Eddy B passed away so young. I trust it was not that bottle of Macallan that did him in. I didn't know his real name, so I didn't notice his obituary in the newspaper.

Zoom, zoom, zoomed through the puzzle today; only after finishing it did I go back and review the Down clues that I hadn't needed or looked at during the solve.

Lots of plural answers today, such as HOTSEATS.

Ah, GROWER, not GROCER. DOPE, not DATA.

Liked the proximity of CHOP and WOOD.

MAO's writings were easy to read; he used straightforward language.

My wife always has the final SAY SO.

Best wishes to you all and thank you for your birthday greetings.

  52. I am so impressed with how well-spoken everyone here is! It is especially apparent today. So articulate! It is evident that the best and most heartwarming aspects of you all have really shown (and shone) brilliantly today. Well said, all!

  53. Hola Everyone, While editing my entry I was told the Web-page had expired and everything disappeared.

I won't try to replicate it all, but I had the same problems as Dennis, and thought that this was harder than most Monday puzzles.

Thanks, Argyle for a great writeup, as usual, and a Very Happy Birthday to Jaycee. I hope you do something really special to celebrate.

I really didn't "know" Eddie B., but had met him a few times. We always tried to time our visits to Warren's pottery sales at the same time so we could chat--mainly about the blog.

He loved our Sharks and he and JD had a lot to talk about when they came up in our conversations. He also was very generous in loaning books and CD's.

I had had coffee with him not too long ago, (to return a set of books he had loaned). JD and I were going to treat him to a pancake brunch when she returned from Italy. He had loaned us both his CD's of the trilogy, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". He loved pancakes.

I've written to his wife, Jill, and if any of you would like to do the same, I have his address. Just e-mail me and I'll give it to you. He will be missed and my condolences go out to his wife and his son, Brian.

  54. Had an early appointment this AM and didn't get a chance to thank Dave and Argyle, so thank you both.

Still playing with the profile from time to time. Can't quite figure out how to get a full sized picture in as my avatar.

Oh well. I'll resolve that and fill out a profile one of these days.

  55. Dang it !

Forgot again to wish you a Happy Birthday Jayce !

Must be the post appointment meds !

  56. I haven't written in a long time. Some health issues have had me blue and depressed. Then I read about Eddy and feel like a big baby. RIP, Eddy and Happy Birthday Day, Jayce.

  57. RIP EddyB.

I have little interest in hockey and abhor autoracing. (Live within a mile of a track that goes every Sat. night until midnight and you will understand.) However, I enjoyed Eddy's posts so much that I read about those, too. So part of Eddy's legacy is he taught me tolerance of other people's interests and posts. I will miss him.

  58. Happy Birthday , Jayce!! Enjoyed the pictures. You are sure a beautiful couple.

Sad to hear about EddyB. My favorite blog memory was his desperate attempts to escape from the hospital. He had a dry-wit no matter his circumstances.

Didn't get a chance to let Lucinda, sisters, and C.C. know how much I enjoyed your MOA pictures. Last time we went to MOA my poor daughter pushed my wheelchair for hours. Boy, was she sore the next day. Lucinda, I'm going to google Sillwater, WI.

My husband is a federal employee and off for Columbus Day. Monday was easy for two of us. Still looking forward to having him home everyday after FEB. 1st!!!

Frost last night and tomatoes gone. Roses still look beautiful.

MEAD- fermented honey drink. Learning moment.

  59. So much for me to like about this puzzle.
    Henny Youngman is a RIOT
Degas' paintings of ballet dancers (perhaps a "pas de chat"?
Ella's scat singing a BOP tune?
Liked "Blue Skies" I use "In walked Bud" by Thelonius Monk for the intro
Aurora Borealis...part of the lyrics to "Midnight Sun "
    My favorite... Art DECO
    Hoped for Christmas SNOW
    Why doesn't anyone sing
    the verse
And noticed the valve trombone player on John Byner's show, JazzB

Then I read about Eddy B and went to the comments. I lost it when Tinbeni, instead of signing off with"Cheers"wrote"Tears" (sniffle)
And Anony-mouse hit the nail on the head as did Yellowrocks.
A long and healthy life to you all
    and HBD Jayce.

I believe you might be thinking of Buckeye who always wanted to escape from Nurse Wretched. (Ratched)

Stillwater is on the banks of the Mississippi. A restaurant called The Dock overlooks the water. Just a picturesque little town.

  61. Wanted to get that last in quickly because my connection is acting up. Hughesnet sucks.

Happy B-day, Jayce. And many more.

Wanted DOPE, put in DATA. Somehow forgot it was Monday and stared at M_S expecting something esoteric. Hands up for grocer and boy, did I plan to come here and tear into Mr. Sarpola.

I have a BA in physiology and my mom had a BS in the "Art of Nursing." A BA is theoretical/research oriented and a BS is practical.

Around here, we have grape and pistachio growers, orange ranchers and almond farmers.

We also are sitting in the mid 80s after spending all last week in the 100s and upper 90s. We may get our first precipitation since early May in the next couple of days, but it sure doesn't look like it.

  62. Thank you Dennis for posting first as an additional tribute to Eddy B., who while sometimes at odds with others, was one of us, and is missed. My best wishes for good health to all who visit, lurkers included. I do not drink everyday, but will toast tonight with a small batch bourbon my nephew bought for me.

I will also raise the glass for a very happy birthday and year for Jayce.

  63. Hi, Lucinda, I do worry that I'm mixing up my friends on the blog.

When EddyB was in the hospital for CHF, he threatened to tie sheets together and escape the hospital. I found entry on July 12 @1:37, but can't remember much else.

  64. HG, I don't TYPE or keyboard well. I almost didn't pass typing in HS. My typing teacher looked at my 4'11" frame and stubby little fingers and had pity on me. He mercifully passed me. We had to chart long-hand, while nursing, so wasn't a problem for years.

  65. I am sorry i did not know EddyB, from the few posts that i saw, he seemed i guy i would want to know.

I have been trying to research the Archives, but so far, i have only reached EddyBs birthday may 30th 2011. The most conspicuous thing on that day was the outpouring of love from all his friends on the Blog.

    On that day, EddyB said:

    Hello all.

The light bulb went on when the
xwrd went from three to five. Very clever.

Thanks to all for your BD wishes.
    Older but no wiser.

Felt sorry For JR. He made a rookie mistake and paid. Went high to pass and got into the marbles.

Am going to finish watching "The
Battle of the River Plate" and transfer photos from the camera to the computer. New avatar?

It's trying real hard to rain. Will wait for the sun before putting out the Flag.

    Take care.

    Hello.

Sun is out and so is the Flag.

    Thanks Warren, Have three jars
ready this time. Maybe I'll meet more blogers this time. Hope so.

I'm planning on flying back to PA the end of Sept for a college reunion. Happy to know that I won't miss the sale.

    Langsdorff just scuttled the Graf.

Thanks again. Have brats to grill.

I think the best way to remember EddyB, is to repost your favorite posts by him. (& he seemed to have many avatars too...)

  66. My wife Ruth and I finished today's puzzle as fast as I could write it down.

EddyB will be sorely missed on this blog and at our pottery and jam sales. He really loved Ruth's jam also. He came to our pottery sale last year and I think JD sent CC a picture? Chickie told me via email about EddyB and told me that JD is in Italy right now.

  67. Sorry Dave Sarpola, but we are busy elsewhere today,,, stick around, we'll get back to you.

Ah Jayce, how can i celebrate the Birthday of the guy who taught me the abbreviations on the Blog. (But not how to abbreviate my posts!)

You are a Gentleman, & a scholar. so what to do?

    Cake?

Hey, it was the only cake i could find that said "Jayce" on it! Plus it "is" the 1st cake i have sent you...

I tried to find something more respectable, perhaps under "gentleman & scholar," (which you are...)
But it didn't work out so well...

So, the best i can do is...

  68. I did not know Eddy B other than his posts here that I have read, but I do want to say that my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and his many friends.
With each new day may peace find a place in your hearts.

No time for puzzles yet today, but I do want to thank you all for your time and effort to make this blog such a nice place to escape to... :)

Happy Birthday Jayce... I hope that your day and your evening have been grand...

  70. Just want to know if Tinbeni and all you guys noticed Hahtoolah's Raining cats and dogs avatar? Or whatever it's called.
Well, 6:00 here. Time to toast EddyB and all of you.

  71. Sunset is in a few minutes where I live. I will lift a toast to EddyB, while sending my heartfelt condolences and best wishes to those near and dear to him.

  72. Sunset duly came to our West coast and a toast was made to EddyB...and a beautiful sunset it was, too.

CED--Great cake. Perhaps we could each have a virtual piece while we lift a glass to Jayce's health and happiness.

Last of all, I finally figured out how to get a photo in my profile. This is one of a family of Cooper's Hawks that frequents our birdbath. The bath is about 15 feet from our bedroom window, so I've gotten many wonderful shots of them, drinking, posing, and even bathing. They are delight!

    'Night, All!

  73. Good night all.

RIP Eddy B. Thanks for the obit, desper-otto.

Yellowrocks: you said it for all of us. Thank you.

  74. Did none of you notice (with one exception) that C.C. had posted/linked EddyB's obituary when she informed us he had passed?

  75. Michele here

Nothing much more to say than I will miss EddyB. My sympathy to all his loved ones. Prayers for happy memories. I had always wanted to ask him some hockey questions. He was the dimunitive sort. A rare quality these days. He will be sorely missed here. Many times I scanned the blog for his posts first.

  76. Mourner @ 9:48--yes, I did notice, but avoided the mention of it when someone else later posted that same info. Loss stresses people, so they often don't notice things they usually would, or forget things they normally wouldn't.

Not sure what your point is, but hope that takes care of it.
