Good morning, Argyle, C.C. and gang - boy, was this ever a flat-out speed run -- well under four minutes with nary a pause and hardly a glance at the down clues.
It's a good thing I didn't need the down clues, 'cause I've never heard of rye beer. I'm not a beer drinker, so I'm at a loss when it comes to microbrewery products. And I didn't see 'macro' until after I'd finished, but it brought back memories of my old COBOL days.
Argyle, nice job making the Monday blog interesting; you're right, there wasn't a lot to work with.
Today is International Jugglers' Day and National Patriot's Day, commemorating the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19th, 1775. And...it's also the day we commemorate Warren's birth. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Warren, and many many more. Thanks for being a great contributor to the blog.
Did You Know?:
- The part of Monk was originally written for Michael Richards (Kramer).
Morning, all!
Well, this would have been a speed run for me as well, except I had a typo and it took me seemingly forever to track it down when I didn't get the expected TADA! at the end. Turned out I spelled 35A HEAP instead of HEEP and didn't notice that it gave me RAGAN instead of REGAN. Stupid Monday morning brain malfunction...
Hello Puzzlers - Piece of cake.
Thanks Argyle for clearing up Op Ed for me. Never was certain what that meant.
Never tried rye beer that I know of, but willing to give it a go. Dennis' COBOL takes me back a few years, though most of my programming was in FORTRAN. Face down, nine edge first!
Lovely pictures, team! Send more :-) !
JD, forgot to mention the great set of pictures; thanks for sharing them, and I know we'd all like to see more.
Face down, nine edge first!
Jeez, Dudley, haven't heard that in quite a few decades. Do you also remember wiring boards? IBM 14XX and 70XX mainframes? Mounting tapes on the tape drives? Ah, those were the days.
Good Morning, Argyle and friends. This was a very easy Monday puzzle. Just what I need to begin the work week. I thought the theme was a bit obscure for a Monday, though.
I am glad I wasn't the only one not familiar with RYE BEER.
We saw Uriah HEEP recently. Variations of Jason and the Golden Fleece/ ARGO are making frequent appearances, too.
My favorite clue was It's Often Enough = ONCE.
Thanks for sharing your safari photos, JD. Looks like a fun trip.
For those of you celebrating Passover tonight, Chag Sameach!
In honor of the creator of the JOAD Family, here is today's QOD: A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. ~ John Steinbeck
Hello all,
Nice puzzle. Thanks Gail, Argyle. Pretty fast! Had to remember to take time out to search for theme.
JD--cool pics. But who is whom among people?
Here is an article that should be of special interest to past and present high school teachers.
Clear Ayes--Do you not have a DVR or such? (I loathe those commercials, which occupy 35% or more of the show time.)
My computer career began in the summer of 1960 at IBM. Fortran and paper tape. Since then, have learned many languages. Still had trouble making macros in Excel 2008 for taxes.
Cheers!
Forgot HBTY Warren. Have a blast!
Ok, I'm brain-dead this morning - I looked at the birthday list, saw the 18th, and thought this was Warren's birthday. I hope to eventually learn that '3' means March...
Happy Unbirthday, Warren.
Good day folks,
After taking the better part of a week off from puzzles, an easy reintroduction to this corner of the world. I had one screw up that slowed me down for a time.... for 28D I had "I'm out." Riue for 39A and comor for 33A turned my lights on.
Not much else to offer this AM. JD, loved the pictures. Patiots Day in Mass today. here's hoping DiceK can pitch the Sox to loss #11. Sorry Barry.
We will call it the Barry G Malaise:
4M, Monday Morning Mental Malfunction
(we all have it on occasion.)
Any appropo musical links to ELO or AC/DC?
(Apropos) I caught 4M.
Good Morning C.C., Argyle and all,
Argyle, Thanks for your write-up and also the map; I am always geographically challenged and eventually maps make a dent.
The puzzle was a snap this AM. Like Dennis, I didn't see MACRO until after I finished; but I'm so unsavy about such things, I wouldn't have known it. The ensuing 'tech' conversation with Dudley and Ferm let me know that I have no idea what I don't know.
Yesterday, was a good example of that. I was blocked from the comment page all day, after I tried to enter my comments. I did the 'cookies' thing and a bunch of other instructions, but Blogger wouldn't let me in. Hope it takes my comments this AM.
Have a nice day everyone.
JD, Loved the pics and the notes! Thanks for sharing- handsome group.
Argyle, Wonderful write-up.
A perfect puzzle for someone who hasn't done one in 2 weeks.
Nice shout-out to our EDDY.
Liked THAT there were 2 answers where the E preceded the I, HEIR and VEIL.
Hmmmm, A-POP of RYE BEER seems perfect for a (much needed) Sunset toast.
Cheers !!!
PS Last day in Zagreb was "interesting" as I watched a large demonstration in the main square.
EU flags being ripped up, lots of shouting, etc.
They were protesting the 'war-crimes' convictions of 2 Croatian Army Officers from the 1995 war instigated by Serbia.
(A Croatian General was found innocent).
Boy is it great to be back in the USA.
Just noticed that Sunday was the last Dan Naddor.
I'll have to see if there are some Sunday St. Pete Times newspapers still on the shelf at the local grocery.
Should be a FUN "Tax-Day" if I can find one.
JD, nice photo's ... I feel like that Leopard up in the tree.
Warren, Happy Birthday!!!
(11 months early !!!)
Argyle: No "electric" musical link here. But I did find this puzzle refreshingly easy.
Good to "see" EDDY.
Welcome back Tinbeni. Thought of you when driving home from the Reds game yesterday and heard HOF broadcaster Marty Brennaman say "...and later tonight the Yankees play on their personal worldwide network, ESPN...". Isn't it a wonder that we here in flyover country call them the "evil empire"? lol
Ooops, Jake is my nephew. I wonder WHEN he was on this computer and WHAT he was doing!
The moon must be in the seventh house! Even I was able to speed through the puzzle today.
I deeply loved the clues today, especially "gooey", since last night's dinner was ended with a fudge pie made by me!
Thanks, Argyle. The geography lesson was a much-needed jog for my old noodle!
Please remember my fellow North Carolinians today as they recover from the weekend's awful storms. We had no damage here, but high winds and lots of rain made for a sloppy day on Saturday. Others were not so lucky, as you can probably see via the TV news.
Argyle, et al, paper is late and so I did this in under 5 minutes online. Much inferior to using the paper and a pencil! Great pix JD, did the baboons threaten you for the chips?
Musings
-My golf course abuts a railroad track and TANK cars and coal cars roll by constantly!
-Decided to sub here in Fremont at a school I can walk to and their sub callers made me RISE at 6 am instead of 6:30 am. Arrgghh!
-UNL REGENTS are cutting left and right just like other universities.
-ACTONE was spoken in what Elvis song?
-Thanks for no SUMO pix!
-MACROS, autotext and templates are very handy in setting up pages and performing functions
-Barry, HEEP/HEAP for me too!
-Husker Joba Chamberlin better get his act together or the Yankees will punt him. He cost C.C. (the other one) a victory last night! Relievers that walk the first man on 4 pitches should be sent down!
Good morning all. Thanks for the comments, Argyle.
Easy Monday but lively fill, nevertheless. Liked the theme phrases. Other than a few spelling pauses like HEEP/REGAN, the solve went smoothly.
BOER - Afrikaner/Dutch for 'farmer' (Plural: Boeren). The Dutch 'oe' sounds like the 'u' in Luke.
German: Bauer
Low German: Buer
JD: Nice pictures of your trip. Thanks for posting.
Have a good day.
Nice easy start to the week. Now, I'd better start on my tax returns.
Enjoyed this one as well. Especially nice since Saturday made me feel exceedingly stupid. Yesterday was fun, but bittersweet as everyone else already posted.
My only snag was Apple Sauce for juice at first - cleared up with the perps.
Asparagus Festival on Saturday was a blast - food was terrific - especially the deep-fried asparagus and the asparagus ice cream! Got my DH to eat everything and he claims he doesn't like the stuff - go figure!
Thanks Argyle, C.C. and other posters. Don't forget to file/send in your check! Have a great week everyone.
Good Morning All, Dennis and others have more fortitude than I do. Even though I try to solve straight across or straight down, after the first couple of lines my curiosity gets the better of me and I wind up drifting all over the place.
I'd never heard of RYE BEER either. I like rye bread. I wonder if there is any similarity in taste.
fermatprime, sadly no, we don't have a DVR. GAH pretty much gave up on technology after he got rid of his 8-tracks, so I have to be the one to set/program/review, etc. all our gadgets. If he caught on to what is available DVR-wise (everything), I'd be busy with it all the time.
I know nothing of MACRO, COBOL, FORTRAN or paper tape. There was an interesting 60 Minutes segment last night with Paul Allen, who described his early work with Bill Gates and the Altair 8800 minicomputer.
Good Morning Argyle, C.C. et al.
Yep, it's all been said about the puzzle.
Great pictures, JD. I would have been more nervous around those rhinocerousssesses (rhinoceri?) than that lazy SOB leopard!
It is PATRIOT'S Day in MA, but PATRIOTS' Day in ME. I guess they have more than one up there, huh Maniac?
It is also the day that the Boston Marathon is always run. I used to live in Natick, about a block from Rout 135. On Patriot's Day, we had to decide in the morning, which side of the route we wanted to be on for the day.
Today, I am free of that limitation, but I think I'll still stay home and work in the garden. Have a great one, everybody!
Good Morning, folks. Enjoyed this easy puzzle, Gail. Got me started off on a high note. I have done many of yours, not so easy as this one. Thanks Argyle for the great write-up, as always.
Entered APPLESAUCE instead of APPLEJUICE. That was my only write-over.
I did not catch the theme, but did not look for it either. Had to go to work. Argyle pointed it out.
Always enjoy AERIE. We have had that forever in crosswords.
See you all tomorrow.
Abejo
Good morning Argyle, C.C. and all,
I agree, a pretty speedy xwd today;
edDy/opeD was my last fill. I also put applesauce at first and had a hard time spelling tachs. My dad used to say "Egads!", not "egad".
C.C., I remember you telling us that you grew up using an abacus. At that time I had never seen the plural form.
C.C., thanks so much for taking the time to post my pictures.I really am not sure how to post my Shutterfly link , so e mail me if you want me to send your the 200+ others.
Husker, that baboon jumped down and stole the chips from a table next to us. I followed him to his hiding place. Earlier a mama with a baby on her back stole a sandwich from another table.
Good morning Argyle, CC, et al., I just love Monday puzzles. A speed run that boosts morale and is fun to boot. Thank you, Ms. G. And thank you Argyle, for the great write up. I always learn something from you. Geography is my major weakness. Travelling is my solution. And the Barry G Malaise, 4M. very cute! LOL
Ferma: interesting article. Thank you for that. What he said is true, but when incompetence is rewarded by promotion, what can we expect? It's an insidious system of number (score) manipulation and of everything but integrity, fair play, and reality, and teachers get blamed. That horrible AP just got promoted.
Mom: we all pray for NC and all of the areas and their losses, including Gloucester just a few miles north of me that was devastated Sat night, losing 3 people.
Tinbeni: a toast of rye beer sounds good tonight...no, early afternoon....but I like how you think! Cheers!
Enjoy your day.
JD: Loved those pix. You all look great too. Loved the cat in the tree. What a great experience!
Thought you all might enjoy this, given the time of year.
Hi all -
Fun, fast puzzle! I'm not able to write fast enough for 'Dennis' time, but I didn't have many pauses. Unknown was REGAN (31D).
I have never heard of Rye Beer either, but I don't drink micro-brews even though Oregon is now famous for them. I have tried a sip in the past but they are all too bitter for me. However, I did have a raspberry ale that was delicious and amazingly NOT BITTER! It packed a punch though....I drank it too fast and I'm not used to anything but light beer.
JD: fabulous pictures! I admire your expertise with your camera. Also thanks for sending me the 200+...I am still enjoying going through them.
Warren, a very merry unbirthday to you!
Don't know *&#@ about computers so MACRO was a wag. (so glad my Joe is an expert :))
Dennis - Mrs. Brown must be making the rounds! That video got to my inbox last week. It's a howl for sure!
I never had to wire any boards, but I do remember those large tape drives (saw one recently in the 1974 version of The Italian Job). For mainframes I suffered through a Univac, then a Cyber, then by 1980 we got a DEC and felt pretty darn modern.
The Boer War was not in my school experience. I learned of it in the film Breaker Morant. Sounds grim.
That's why they call it "war".
I stol...borrowed this from PuzzleGirl:
Electric Avenue(3:22) - Eddy Grant
@HEARTRX
The classical pleural of rhinoceros is rhinocerotes, but rhinoceroses (or just rhinoceros) is allowed in this modern world.
NC
Dennis,
Laughed my butt off. What a great skit.
Hondo
Hi gang -
Nice start to the week, though, for me, there are no speed runs. Maybe I carry 4M throughout the week.
Never heard of RYE BEER, but now that I know there is such a thing, I want some!
FLOWER POWER and COVER CHARGE -- Wow!
Put me in the APPLESAUCE club. Charles Stewart Mott did more than just squash apples. He saved my grandson's life. Nate was born at Mott's Children's Hospital at U of M Ann Arbor, with transposition of the great arteries. The Aorta and Pulmonary arteries were hooked up in reverse. Very bad, as you can well imagine.
The cardiac staff there SET it all RIGHT, and now he's a healthy 8-yr-old, and I'm a very blessed and DEEPLY grateful Bumpa.
And it explaines why this Buckeye is also a Wolverine (51 weeks per year.)
Big concert tonight. Wayne Bergeron flew in from L.A. to play with us, and is SNOWED this morning. We're doing this tune.
Cheers!
JzB who uses an AIR CURRENT
Re Ms (?) Brown:
Tis nawthin tuh laf it, me boyos!
Hello everybody. Speedy deedy solve this fine morning, but a fun one. I enjoyed some of the original cluing and fill. Favorites are "What daredevils seem to lack" and "Wore an upside-down frown." FLOWERPOWER is a neat-o fill.
Argyle, thanks for the writeup. I sure didn't know what's what OP-ED means. Like so many others, I thought it meant "opinion or editorial."
JD, thanks for the great photos, and thank you for posting them, C.C. It looks like you all had a fascinating time.
I love microbrews, but have never had rye beer.
Fermat, thanks for the link to that article by Conrad Wold. He is absolutely correct.
Husker Gary, I'll bite. In what Elvis song was it?
Thanks again to the several of you who explained T tests last night.
Best wishes to you all.
Man oh man, I'm gonna fry asparagus for din-din tonight! No rye beer to go with it, though.
Abaci, rhinoceri, asparagi, Shutterfly ...
Lois, who is AP?
Jazzbumpa, I hope all goes well tonight.
Michael Richards was so excellent as Kramer. It's really a shame he imploded after that.
We just got our (small) state tax refund, so LW and I are gonna go spend it all in one place tomorrow.
Good day, Argyle, C.C. et al.
Thank you, Gail, for a nice speed run this Monday morning. Fast but great fill, no problem with APPLEJUICE and we saw Uriah, not HEEP recently. POWERful theme, too.
Lear's daughters are making the rounds, first Goneril now REGAN, we just need Cordelia in a puzzle.
This left no SCARS and I saw the MOVIE, The Social Network last night. When I've seen Mark Zuckerberg in interviews he seems nothing like he was portrayed.
Thank you also, Ms. Grabowski, for including only the word SPORT and no obscure head scratchers.
TACHS and MACRO may be difficult to understand but clued easily enough.
JD, thank you for sharing your absolutely gorgeous photos.
Have an untaxing tax day, everyone! My check is in the mail.
Argyle, thanks from me as well for explaining OP ED; I had the mistaken idea it was from the editorial board.
Dennis, that is a hilarious episode of Mrs. Brown. Thank you.
Just stopping by to say "hi" to those who remember me.
Dr. Dad -
Hi. I remember you.
Cheers!
JzB
Hola Everyone, A nice speed run for me today. I had to go back and read some of the down clues to make sure I had the correct spelling.
Rye Beer is a new brew for me. I have heard of Rye Whiskey though. OpEd was also my new word for the day. Thanks, Argyle, for a great writeup.
The Applesauce club just grew by one. That was quickly fixed when Joad made its appearance.
Fermatprime, Thanks for the article.
JD, Wonderful pictures. I've not had time to go through your Shutterfly group yet, but will enjoy sitting and scrolling through them later this afternoon.
Welcome back, Tinbeni.
Jayce: Asst Principal = AP.
JD: I really admire your photography ability. Thank you for sharing those great pictures and to CC for allowing it, and to our dear Argyle for doing it. I'd like the rest of 'em too.
DrDad: Yea!!!! Good to see you here. Hi back atcha!!! Miss your input here. Any chance of getting you more often?
I had grilled blackened shrimp brushed w/brown sugar yesterday in VaBeach. Thought I had died and gone to heaven. Grilled asparagi made me think of it.
Time to check out that rye beer...
Dennis, I laughed so hard I cried while watching the Mrs. Brown episode. Soooo funny,
Good to see that muscular Avatar, Dr. Dad. Drop by more often if you can.
C.C., thanks so much for switching the Paris photo to the right one. Now we can see the L'arc du Triomphe.
Fermat,if you are looking at the picture of the 4 of us posing with our trusty Land Rover, you will see Dick (standing),his wife, Irene, JD with frizzy hair seated in the tracker's chair, and DH, Bob, in ranger's seat without a rifle.
Hi Dr. Dad, you have been missed! You always gave us such great science information. Are you still traveling to Asia ?
Jayce -
Michael Richards imploded? I didn't know that. He was unbeatable as Kramer, and when Dennis wrote that he was considered for Monk, I figured it was an excellent match.
It is also the day that the Boston Marathon is always run. I used to live in Natick, about a block from Route 135.
Small world, HeartRx! I grew up in North Natick, right between the Bennet-Hemingway Elementary School and the Wilson Junior High Shool. I remember handing out cups of water and orange slices to the runners when I was a kid.
Why N.C., thanks for that. I never would have guessed "rhinocerotes"!
Welcome back, Tin Man!
And Dennis, the Mrs Brown link was absolutely hilarious...but maybe it should have come with a warning:
Do not try this at home!
Hello.
Tin. Thanks and welcome back.
Ferm. I was one of THOSE parents.
Argyle. Caught the song at the other place.
It was/is called the Seinfeld curse. None of them ever found the
magic again.
There are also wheat beers.
Should get the Jean Auel book in the mail tomorrow.
take care.
Jayce, It was “Are You Lonesome Tonight”
I wonder if you're lonesome tonight
You know someone said that the worlds a stage
And each must play a part.
Fate had me playing in love you as my sweet heart.
Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came act two, you seemed to change and you acted strange
And why I'll never know.
JD, I thought baboons were more aggressive than that. Maybe I was thinking or orangutans.
Dudley, believe me, Michael Richards went off the deep end with a racial rant on stage!
I first had Applesauce (remember what went along with the applesauce on the Brady Bunch?)
porkchops and applesauce. it wasn't richards fault, he was goaded.
Anon, committing professional verbal suicide in front of an open microphone irrespective of the amount of goading is stupid beyond belief and comes with severe consequences. Larry David tried to help resurrect Richards’ career in a very funny episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm but I don’t’ think he is back yet and it might be a long time before Hollywood forgives him. Mel Gibson and Lindsay Lohan are still working, so go figure!
Dudley, I remember seeing 1980's "Breaker Morant" too. I was slightly familiar with the Boer Wars, since I went to school in Canada and studied a lot of British history along with the Canadian. It was an excellent movie and a troubling story.
HG, I have no idea what the Brady Bunch had with applesauce, but I bet it wasn't potato latkes. (That's my favorite combo!)
I haven't seen a Mel Gibson movie since his Malibu rant. His recent behavior with his former girlfriend and mother of his daughter doesn't seem to have improved his image.
Lindsay Lohan is kind of pathetic. I hope she gets herself together.
I don't have any sympathy for Michael Richards.
I'm not sure if I laughed or winced more at Mrs. Brown in the cupboard.
C.A. Here ya go - Pork Chops and Applesauce. This became a running joke at our house in the 70’s and persists to today.
Husker Gary, baboons are extremely dangerous and will run down and kill a leopard
Wow, the things I miss just by being gone a few hours!
Husker Gary, I watched part of that rant by Michael Richards (I had never even heard of him), I couldn't listen to all of it! No excuse for that type of behavior if you are going to perform professionally...there will always be hecklers.
Hey, Dr Dad!!! welcome back, you are always missed and I hope you can post more often. Hope all is well in your world :)
Hi Argyle, C.C. & gang. Great set of safari pictures JD!
I didn't feel like posting until I came here and saw Dennis's comment about my birthday? For Dennis, remember that my birthday is one day after St. Patrick's on 3.18, somehow you were off by a month?
For "Mom speaks out"
Here's a link to the opening scene of the movie "Hair" with the song Aquarius.
Re: The discussion starting with COBOL, I can still remember trying to debug wire-wrapped back-planes for Data 100 Corp. Data 100 was an offshoot of 3M I think.
I believe that that each post would have up to 5 wires wrapped onto it and it never failed that if you found a wiring error you usually had to remove the top 4 wires to get to the bottom one that was bad.
I guess I'm glad those days are over.
Does anyone else remember Moore's Law?
Barry G - yes, I do remember that you grew up in Natick. I only lived there for a few years, but it was a really fun town...except at Christmas, when you had to fight traffic to get to "The Golden Triangle".
Oh, now I get it, the Michael Richards self-torpedo situation. Saw the YouTube linked by Husker ( I think). Grim.
Husker, I have heard that they can be very dangerous. It seems that they are aggressive thieves around the cape, where we were. There are men with sling shots along the roads and in parking lots to keep them away, but not guns. See clip.
BTW, loved the porkchops/applesauce clip.
Fermatprime, "The Good Wife" is one of my favorite shows.I tape everything I watch on Comcast..except for the Sharks and news.
Gail: Nice, fun puzzle today. Thanks for the fresh clueing!
IT folks, don't forget carrying those big awkward disk packs to the vault after running the back-ups. Funny, I was just saying yesterday that I almost wish I could go back and work in COBOL again...
JD, thanks for sharing the great pictures! I look forward to seeing more. Please send them or your link.
Dennis, thanks for sharing Mrs. Brown. I was just considering getting my legs waxed for the summer, so that was a timely warning/reminder... I think I'll stay with my trusty razor!
Hi all, very frustrating day in my buyer's seat for BK today. HUGE promotion going on for the new chicken tenders. My sauce truck didn't show up. You need to dip!
I was not the happy go-lucky gal you all know and love today. Matter of fact, I didn't like me today, but I needed to chew some ass. It made sense as all of a sudden I have a truck heading my way with product tomorrow. I still hated being a jerk though.
Trying day.
No time for the xword puzzle but I wanted to say to JD, great pics!! Give me 18 years and I may see such wonder.
My therapy was starting a big pot of chicken soup. I put the aromatics in a pot with my chicken and picked it all apart. Finishing touches tomorrow. Now, just for me... steely dan
Annette, I can't even consider having anything waxed off. I tried my "you know what" and it hurt like hell and my nice gal said "you weren't even that hairy". Okay, too much information, but it hurt like hell, not to mention my embarassment in the situation. I might have too much of Thelma in me as she would never have considered it.
