Good morning!
This may be a record of some sort...three in a row...DNF. LENA/SEI that second vowel could'a been an A, E, O or U. I guess wrong. So did Wilbur. The other day we had SNAP, and today POP showed up. Can Crackle be far behind? Got my COVID #3 over the weekend. I don't want to infect my M-o-W clients. Hope you have a great day. Thanx, Rebecca and Boomer.
I stop by here now and then. The NYT game site is offline this morning. Thanks, Rebecca, for a fun Monday xword. I also enjoyed the review.
FIW. Crossing of Luna and Sui did me in. Not fond of two proper names crossing!
FIW, adding my name to the fail list for LeNA x SeI, but nailing the Natick KATANA x KATZ. Had to wait on PBJ/blt and DROP/tear. Very difficult Monday, me thinks, but YMMV.
Erased exilee for EMIGREE and funny ears for BUNNY EARS.
As long as we're proffering a tough Monday, why not make it MAIZE MAZE?
If your paper carries the Lola comic strip, you know that today she was scolded for wanting to modify the PRECUT pieces of her jigsaw puzzle.
My first two jabs were Moderna. I don't know where that leaves my willing arm in the scheme of things. I'll ask my PCP during my appointment Thursday.
Thanks to Rebecca for the Thursday-on-a-Monday puzzle, and to Boomer for the usual fun review. BTW, I spent some time last week in Spartanburg, SC. One of the creative local businesses in the renovated downtown is UnderPin Lanes 'N Lounge. They have 8 bowling lanes, a bar and dining areas. They were closed when we were there, but it seems like a great concept.
KS, a certain Rex Parker who hosts a NYT blog christened it a Natick
Apparently, a NYT xword crossed an proper name with "A town SW of Boston".
A famous football player played his HS career there. Other than that it has a large Mall
What was that place in California clued a month back?
WC
MichMan, you can get the NYT puzzle at The Seattle Times web site. No pay wall. Our old friend Bruce Haight is today's author.
Jinx, the NYT you reference was published August 23, 2021 in the NYT. They are syndicated for free solving after initial publication.
As for this puzzle, my local CVS has had an endcap of LUNA bars for a long time so it was not a problem. Rebecca is one more new successful constructors who debuted this year. I have not seen any comments or bio for her, but encourage her to come by and say hi. There are many successful Rebecca Goldsteins in life now.
The puzzle should have run on the Monday before election day, maybe. I had forgotten how DAN AYKROYD spelled his name.
Thank you Rebecca and Boomer.
The correct spelling of 57-A is JEEZ, not GEEZ; it's not a contraction of GEE WHIZ; it's a contraction of JESUS, and it violates your "no religion," "no personal attacks" policy.
Hand up for the Natick. The original in the NYT crossed the Mass. town _atick with American painter _ C Wyeth. I was in Natick Saturday, it's the last service area on the Mass Turnpike heading into Boston.
I'll pick a nit: yea and nay are voice votes, not a secret ballot.
To many solvers, including me, SUI crossing LUNA was a true Natick. Monday fare? Nay.
Rebecca, I liked your puzzle, never the less. Some nice, fresh fill.
Jeez, Geez and Gee whiz, are all minced oaths based on the word Jesus. Most dictionaries accept all three.
When I moved I threw away about ten TOTES. IMO advertising on totes is way overdone. Two or three of them come in handy, more of them is just too many.
When I was a waitress I worked with a bilingual maƮtre D who greeted guests with PODDY, PODDY. They were stumped for while. He meant, "How many in your party?"
It is a FIR for me today. I knew LUNA from buying bars and snacks for hikes, and SUI looked familiar after it filled. Only WO today was near the end with OKEYDOKy, which isn't spelled right but down fill is harder for me to see. Should have checked the perp before writing it in. Thanks, Rebecca, for today's puzzle and please stop by visit us. Thanks, Boomer, for the review and for the picture. Glad you got your booster! A slightly sore arm was my only effect but it didn't last long.
Enjoying this nice fall weather and hoping you all are too!
Musings
-Got ‘er done, but a Monday puzzle that starts with a vowel guessing game at L_NA/S_I? Yikes!
-_ATZ/_ATANA was no walk in the park for me either
-I had an impressive collection of TOTE bags from science equipment vendors
-My sister had these that were not PRE CUT
-I’ll never get used to the “ping” of aluminum BATS replacing the “crack” of a wooden BAT
-Long pants today on the course! 55F but climbing to 90F under cloudless skies.
Monday MAZE. Thanks for the fun, Rebecca and Boomer.
Hand up for a Natick at the cross of LUNA and SUI. (I thought it was Canadian disadvantage, but I see others had the same problem.)
Plus, I was held up by refusing to relinquish my BLT (yes my tomatoes from the garden are almost finishedš) for a PBJ.
Thankfully I WAGged the K in the cross of KATZ and KATANA.
This is Monday, right??š®
But I did get the YEA/ NAY theme, and the Easter Egg veto NIX.
We were a Q short of a pangram today.
But this Canadian knew DAN AYKROYD and Catharine OHARA (both originally from Second City, Toronto). (They were even in a movie together, called Being Canadian. LOL!)
MY “eye lubricant” was a natural product, Tear, before a DROP. That paired with the “Visine target” DRY EYE, although I wanted Red Eye first. (There are a plethora of Visine products which should not be confused. The dry eye lubricant product may be used on a regular basis, but the red eye version contains a decongestant which can cause rebound issues with overuse (similar to nasal decongestants.)
Continued thoughts and prayers for Irish Miss.
Wishing you all a great day.
Boomer: Nice write-up & links.
If there is one thing I am looking forward to it is the return of the
Tampa Bay Lightning "Stanley Cup Champions" returning on October 12, 2021
season ON ICE.
Hope everyone has a great week.
Cheers!
As this is Monday I thought my weekend woes were over, but I was brought low by a personal NATICK: SUI crossing LUNA. Not a fashion plate and not a woman. But I still thank Rebecca for a YEA of a puzzle, a fun theme, and lots of fine fill.
And thank you Sir Gregory for our weekly raft of groaners. Glad you got your BOOSTER. We're waiting for our Moderna jabs to be approved for that.
17A NOT AN OMNIVORE wouldn't fit. I'm on a SEAFOOD diet - I SEE food and I eat it.

10D Started with SNOW BALL, but it didn't perp.

OwenKL @5:24 AM Thanks for the poem Owen. My Mother would have loved that, or perhaps she did, and perhaps she just read it with me.
Good morning everyone.
Agree about the LUNA start but it was still easy enough for a Monday. Bit of a bite, tho. FIR. Theme was OK but unspectacular.
NIX - Merriam says it came into English from the German 'nichts'. Low German is NIX, meaning 'nothing' or 'not anything'. I heard "Dat mokt NIX" (Oh, it's nothing, or 'it doesn't matter') a lot as a kid.
We plan to get our covid booster vax as soon they settle on a protocol for Moderna. November would be 8 mos. for us.
Thanks Boomer for starting us off.
Harder than a typical Monday. I had to work to get the NE corner until I remembered OVID
Haha, I knew LUNA from having done WeightWatchers with my wife, although all the ladies recommend Built Bars as a much better alternative.
At first I thought Dana Carvey for the SNL fellow. I didn't know Dan Aykroyd was spelled with all those Ys.
My favorite answer: BUNNY EARS.
Since we got KATANA, will we next see SHURIKEN (those Japanese throwing stars)?
I pretty much agree with most others who have posted. Natick at the crossing of LUNA and SUI. I thought the bar was a LARA bar.
I did know about KATZ's Deli in NY, but I've never been there. However there are a lot of other good deli's that I have been to. I love the ethnic foods found in NY delis. The good delis are not just limited to NYC. There are many on Long Island and north Jersey along with great diners.
I now have to use EYE DROPS for pressure in the eyes. However they are not DRY EYES. It's either use drops or have Laser eye surgery. I'll stick with the drops for now.
I haven't been on the blog for a while, so I apparently missed something about Irish Miss. I hope she OK.
Have a great day everyone.
I count 8 (including MOI), felled so far by the SUI/LUNA NATICK.
Anonymous @8:11 AM The "no religion" policy doesn't apply to constructors. You're free to take that up with Rich if you like. However it is a problem that the blog team has to dance around from time to time. As the last 4000 years or so of history have been dominated by religions, expunging all references to them would make Crosswords a poorer place.
And BTW "no religion" DOES apply to comments, and you just violated it by using the "J" word. But then I guess I violated it by using the "P" word in regards to our dear friend AGNES.
Bill

Hola!
YEA! A Monday puzzle that required thinking outside the box!
Luckily just this past Saturday I was browsing the aisle with diet foods and I spotted LUNA bars. Diabetic foods are shelved there, too.
USD where I attended college was not COED at the time but is now.
Visiting KATZ's restaurant is a highlight when in New York. The table where the scene from When Harry Met Sally, is cordoned off.
You may have heard about the BALLOT scandal here in Arizona and I will be the first to admit that we have some really weird legislators.
Having grown up in a very poor family I am not a PICKY EATER.
I, too, had a large collection of TOTE bags from attending many conferences in the past. I still have a few and pack them when I travel to California where grocery bags must be paid for if one doesn't have any. No plastic bags or plastic bottles allowed there.
Agnes, please get well soon. I'm sending prayers for you.
Have a beautiful Monday, everyone!
Interesting, and a bit more challenging than the usual, Monday puzzle. As with others the SUI/LUNA crossing held me up while pondering. The U seemed to make more sense than the other vowels and, when I punched that key, the app said I had been successful.
Congrats on the booster, Boomer. I am waiting for the Moderna version to be approved and, as my original 2nd shot was 19 February, the timing looks like it may work out pretty well.
Agnes, please feel better soon.
Good Morning.
I had a good run this morning. Thanks, Rebecca.
Thanks for the tour, Boomer. I had no erasures or write overs--just "wait-overs." I needed to wait for the crosses to confirm my guesses. I knew DAN, but LYES informed me of the correct spelling of his last name. In all these years, I guess I never noticed.
Oh, them Bears. . . . Mrs. McCaskey once fired her eldest son. Yes, Virginia, YOU may have to fire the coach and GM as it looks like they have no idea what they are doing. In my opinion, these kids have been playing football since 4th or 5th grade. They would probably do just better coaching themselves just as they did in the local park when they were young. Of course, no one has asked for my opinion. . . .
Have a sunny day. It sure is a beauty here.
Hand-up: FIW at LaNA | SaI.
Thanks for the puzzle, Rebecca. I'd argue, given the circles, there was nothing SECRET about the votes :-)
Excellent expo, Boomer. Glad to hear you got your Booster.
WO: Ram -> ALP (Matterhorn made me think of those alpine sheep)
ESPs: [see: FIW]
Fav: KATZ's deli. We have a couple of "branch offices" in/around Houston.
Making a scene in Katz's Deli [When Harry Met Sally]
GEEZ - work beckons. Play later.
Cheers, -T
Nothing surprising about this Monday challenge...str8forward theme.
Have seen LUNA bars but didn't know the manufacturer. Catherine OHARA eclIpsed her "Best in Show" role when she played Moira in "Shitt's Creek" rewarded with 2020 Emmy
CORNMAZE "Corn" is more correctly called "maize".š½..Our Italian language instructor at university told us she ate " boiled mice" when she first visited the US...apparently she was forgetting to translate the Italian word for corn mais (mah‐EEZE). We hoped she meant "Corn on the cob" Most Europeans were shocked Americans ate corn at all, there it was considered livestock feed. š

To the Blog administrator: Comments written on my iPhone continue to be deleted when I touch the "Publish" button, NOT posted.
Today's comments: This Thursday-on-a-Monday-CW took 21 minutes to FIR. W/O BLT:PBJ. DNK LUNA, SUI, SHEL, OHARA, HERA, OYE, KATANA. I guessed the "U" at SUI/LUNA cross because "LUNA" sounded like the most marketable name. I agree w/ BobB that YEA and NAY are voice votes, NOT secret ballots. I've always heard it "OKEYDOKEY", not OKEYDOKE". Still, an entertaining CW, thanx, RG. Boomer, thanx for all the time and effort you put into your write-ups. And congrats on the booster! I got mine at CVS Friday, after seeing an ad on TV saying, "We are ready to give the Pfizer booster. Register online and make an appointment." So I did, but when I got to my local CVS I was told they had been told by CVS that they were not set up yet and not to give the booster. After considerable "discussion" I got the booster. Who watched the Packer/49er game last night? Amazing game! AND perhaps the most poorly refereed game I have seen since the zebra strike! Among the poor calls: 49ers "intentional grounding" not called. 49er LAUNCHED himself off the ground and hit Adams' right in the facemask with the crown of his helmet, and was NOT ejected from the game for targetting! There was NO FLAG AT ALL!! Also a "Roughing the passer" call when the QB was barely touched. AND a "Pass interference" call where the receiver was barely touched. And several non-calls where the rec'r was wrapped up by the defender and TOTALLY interfered with. Anyway, to watch Rodgers come back with 37 seconds and no time-outs and get the ball to where the amazing Mason Crosby kicked the winning 50 yard FG! AMAZING GAME!
Hand up LUNA/SUI a Natick crossing for me. Same for KATANA/KATZ. But I have a friend who is a nanny for a girl named LUNA. And my mother had a high school friend named KATZ. So I chose those for the WAGs to FIR. Mondays do seem to be the worst for proper names. Why is that?
When I see YARN I think of a wonderful accidental YARN Bomb discovery.
Here I discovered a YARN Bomb at the top of our Saddlerock trail.
When I published my article, it got a flood of comments. Many seemed to think it was some kind of assault on the environment. I thought that was silly. It is a wonderful work of art that took a lot of effort to design, weave from YARN and install. And it was only up for a few days.
Has anyone else heard of and/or experienced a YARN Bomb?
Boomer Thank you for boosting the booster shot! From my limited understanding, the booster shots seem to reduce the viral load carried by a vaccinated person who is infected with the Delta variant. Which means you are helping to reduce transmission of the virus. Of course, we also need to be sure people around the world all get vaccinated, too.
From Yesterday:
Thank you for your continued kind words about my BROAD Museum photos!
AnonT and Vidwan Thank you for the amusing comments about another meaning of BROAD! I am not sure that younger people would ever have heard that term used that way.
Yes, ELI and Edyth BROAD indeed were very generous with donating money for the arts. Apparently, ELI died in between our two visits in the photos.
To waseeley and Chairman Moe:
About the poem at 5:24 AM, it was linked by WC, not OwenKL, and was "The Song of the Bow" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. OwenKL hasn't posted yet today.
Hi Y'all! I thought Rebecca's puzzle was fun. So was Boomer's expo. Thanks!
Thought the theme was ept for all the AYEing and NAYing & hashing and rehashing & vetoing that seems to be the norm in Congress these days. So tiresome.
Hand up for seeing a natick at LUNA/SUI. I had on red-letters but "U" was the last vowel I tried. Knew of KATZ deli but never been there. DNK KATANA or OHARA.
I had trouble coming up with ENDOW for "subsidize". Know it means that after some thought.
Never expected to need to know how to spell AYKROYD. Not a "fav".
AH fall! Two nights/days of running the furnace. Now second day running the A/C.
Prayers for you sweet Agnes.
I missed the posting about Irish Miss. Could somebody enlighten me please?
I liked this puzzle somewhat. Hand up for simply guessing that U crossing LUNA and SUI. I did know KATANA, though. Four perps and I had OHARA. I've always heard, and said, OKEY DOKEY, but understand OKEY DOKE. SCAT --> JAZZ. TEAR --> DROP.
Glad you got the booster, Boomer. (I'm not convinced it should be called a "booster." I think it should be viewed simply as the 3rd of a 3-shot regimen. On the other hand, not all those who got the first 2 injections qualify for this 3rd one, at least not yet. Jeez.)
Jinx, MAIZE MAZE, good one.
*** Begin rant ***
Speaking of the medical profession sometimes using what I personally believe to be misleading terminology, I'll relate a brief story. Once upon a time my doctor asked me what my father died of. When I said emphysema the doctor immediately replied, "Oh, COPD!" Um, no, it was emphysema; says so right there on the death certificate. And besides, how can emphysema possibly be considered an "obstructive" disorder? It's a disease of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs, losing their elasticity and even rupturing. On the other hand, asthma is obstructive but not considered to be COPD. Jeez.
*** End rant ***
Good wishes to you all and special prayers for Irish Miss.
Anon @ 8:11:
FYI. "Jeez is an informal way to express surprise, disappointment, frustration, annoyance, or exasperation. Jeez can also be spelled geez. It's an interjection, meaning it's typically said by itself (instead of as part of a sentence) to express some kind of emotion."
unclefred@1:11pm. - I think I missed an earlier post about Irish Miss too, but C.C. Posted this yesterday
“ 3) Please continue to keep Agnes (Irish Miss) in your thoughts and prayers. It hurts me so much to see her suffer. I'm so used to reading her bubbly email with cheerful emojis.
She'll see an oncologist on Oct 7th and hopefully we'll know more about the next steps. Please email me (crosswordc@gmail.com) if you want to send Agnes an email or a card. We miss your presence on the blog, Agnes, stay strong!”
unclefred @ 12:27 : 37 seconds???? was truely amazing. I had faith that Crosby would come thru in the clutch. Really pissed off on the Adams no-call. Really!!!!
Fred, I saw some of those calls and non-calls*. But I went to Sox vs Yanks(Aaarrrgggghhhh!!) and missed the finale.
-T, loved that scene. Director's mom voiced "I'll have what she's having ".
Picard, loved that bomb.
WC
**My theory is refs are prepped on what to call and vv periodically. "Watch out for offensive interference…" and Gronk gets called outside of the plays action. NFL needs to stay out of officiating business especially now that they're wrapped up in gambling business
Picard- I have never heard of or seen a Yarn Bomb. Beautiful handiwork.
About Irish Miss:
On Tuesday, September 21, after Hahtoolah's review, C.C. reported that Irish Miss (Agnes) had been released from the hospital the day before, continuing to feel weak and worn out from various tests. That was the first information about her that I noticed.
Thankyou Rebecca Goldstein fora charming Monday Puzzle and thank you Boomer for a illuminating and funny review. Hope you are doing well.
I had no trouble with LUNA and SUI, since I know of them, quite well, though I havent consumed the first and secondly I dont don female clothing.
From last night, the first graders thank you card, mispelt Boards to Broads ... in case anybody did not get the joke.
If NATALE is Xmas, would Christmas Eve be considered PRE NATAL ?
Have a nice day, and evening, all.
I had the same problem with LUNA/SUI. I knew neither, but for some reason I stuck an A in there. That was a long time ago, so I have no idea what my thought process was.
While this was a more crunchy Monday puzzle, I had no real problem with the rest of it. Needed a little bit of Wite-Out to correct errors here and there, but it all fell together. I did remember KATZ, so I got the crossing with KATANA; LYES gave me the correct spelling for AYKROYD; and yes, I prefer BLT to PBJ, so BLT went in first. I do eat my share of peanut butter, but without the jelly.
Thanks and welcome Rebecca. Nice expo, Boomer.
Wrote my Tuesday poems, and accidentally did one of them on Monday's grid, so here it is for you night-OWLS.
Searching for a SNOWY OWL, to meet her,
Freezing our tushies off, wanting a heater!
From the blizzard came a Yeti,
Ate our ice axes like spaghetti!
Then lumbered off -- he was a PICKY EATER!

BTW, I'll take a CSO at BARD.
