“Litotes” was gotten
through ESP (every single perpendicular). Otherwise, I didn’t have too much trouble with this puzzle. FIR, so I’m happy.
Good morning!
The theme was obvious -- even d-o got it. Automatically inked in ET at the end of the themers, and that helped with the solve. Here's another hand up for LITOTES -- had to look it up. I get what it means, but don't think I've ever seen (or heard) it before -- a true "there's a word for that" moment. Congrats on the Sunday debut, Jared. Thanx for 'splainin' it all, C.C. (Also never heard "Less talk, more rock." Maybe I'm not punky enough.)
FIW, missing with ARIeL and having no idea about the feline. geena->OSSIE, and eat for two->ATE FOR TWO.
CC, if you flunk the pass-through detector at the airport, the TSA will use a handheld wand to figure out what part of your person caused the beeping. That makes TSA "wanders."
My CPA brother-in-law uses Turbo Tax professionally, so a CPA is not really an alternative to it.
CRAPS is the best casino game to play if you just want to learn a couple of fundamentals. Namely, how to play the pass line and make the largest odds bets allowed. The rest of the layout will just make you lose your money faster. The worst is blackjack if you play by instinct. To intelligently lose your money playing blackjack, you must know what to do with every possible hand (hit, stand, double, or split) based on the card the dealer shows.
When I was a drinking man, PATRON Anejo was my PATRON saint of tequila.
Is that stuff they fix driveway cracks and holes with actually TAR?
Thanks to Jared for the fun Sunday morning exercise. And thanks to CC for another informative review.
One reason this OLDTIMER is not a fan of this (or similar) puzzle is after TICK-ET was filled, I guessed adding alien, ET, at the end of every long fill would be correct. I was right. The long fills were easy to guess. Adding to my displeasure are words like BOUGIE and LITOTES, whatever they supposed to mean. I guessed bougie might be related to a bough high in a tree; wrong.
I've never heard the term LESS TALK, MORE ROCK. I would guess it refers to somebody wanting a radio DJ to shut up and play music. A Canadian punk rock band with a combination of propaganda and Ghandi? I doubt it.
Shooting UNDER PAR is impossible with CLOCK GOLF since the goal it to sink it in one stroke. Phil Michelson would try to hit 100 putts from 3 feet and do it again if he missed one.
REISER, HAHN, LITOTES, BOUGIE, ALEK- unfamiliar names and words
FIR. I didn't have much trouble with today's presentation, except for litotes, which fortunately the perps helped with.
I got the theme early on with the first long answer and that helped speed up the solving a lot.
Overall a quite enjoyable Sunday solve.
What a refreshing change...an abundance of clues that are actual definitions of the answers! No attempts by the constructor to show us all how much more clever he is than the rest of us, a vanity tactic that appears much too frequently these days. A very enjoyable puzzle.
Congrats, Jared, on landing a Sunday. Unfortunately, I feel merely adding ET to some phrases is rather weak for the big puzzle. On the plus side, there were no sticky wickets. Well, maybe one for me where I had WOW for OOH which made it hard to find the UNION.
I love learning new words like LITOTES, again filled in fairly by perps.
ANON was cleverly clued, as CC noted. I went through the abbrev. of every mystery writer before landing on the obvious.
Thanks for the write-up CC, when I saw STEAM, I knew we'd be treated to one of your great dishes!
I was "not unhappy" with the ET theme -- I thought it was clever and helpful. I kind of love the existential question to a parking enforcer. And speaking of enforcers, DH and I were both randomly selected for further examination by wand-ers at airports on our recent trip.
Since I was able to FIR on paper, no cheating, at breakfast, I enjoyed Jared's puzzle. I liked seeing C.C. in the garden, and knowing that LITOTES was a learning moment for her, too.
Google the band before you deem that they don’t exist. Ethnocentric old geezer.
Musings
-The gimmick showed itself immediately and then was helpful
-Track and field competitors always try to beat their personal BESTS in every meet. Our friend’s daughter had hers in the State Meet this year to score points for her team.
-I did not know LITOTES and thought it was some variation of “totes adorbs”
-I have felt UNDER PAR on the golf course but have never shot UNDER PAR :-)
-Darth Vader: “Luke, I am your father!” Today I learned that was after a name change.
-I love the beautiful face in the picture of the peonies!
-No chance: BOUGIE and NEMEAN
-The Dan Rather and Connie Chung CO-ANCHORSHIP was a disaster
-Elvis’s take on “Less talk”
Hola! A nice one from Jared Cappel and congratulations on your Sunday debut! it's the first time in a very long, long time that I finished before going to church. And with very few corrections! In fact, I see only three. That is amazing! LITOTES is a learning moment for me, too. I am also learning all of the Simpson's characters without ever watching the show!
I loved RHODA when it aired! I'm familiar with ARIAL but not calibri.
What a nice photo of you, C.C., among your flowers.
Have a great day, everyone!
I liked this puzzle and even learned something worth remembering (LITOTES ).
Delightful Sunday puzzle, many thanks, Jared. And your Sunday commentaries are always helpful, C.C., many thanks for this too.
Well, when a puzzle has words like EROTIC and ADORE, it's hard not to expect that there might be some romance worked into this, maybe with the help of a GENIE. What if we find two people who might make a DUO, like LISA and LENNY? They'd have to WAIT A SEC before they'd be ready to find an OPEN DOOR and be careful not to go too far or too fast. But once they're ready to go hand BY HAND, and TOE TO TOE until they get to a point where offering their vows might be OKED by their MAMA and their papa, it might be okay for them to GO FAR enough to become CO-ANCHORS in marriage, and create a happy family. Wouldn't that be a nice ending to this puzzle?
Have a lovely weekend, everybody.
Congratulations, Jared Cappel and thank you, C.C. for the sparkling review. Really enjoyed this puzzle...like many, LITOTES was a learning moment for me and I'm glad to know it!
Superb Sunday. Thanks for the fun, Jared and C.C.
I worked this CW online, and required red letter help to clear up my mess at BAIUL and DURAN. But I did get the ET theme early in the solve, and smiled at the themers.
TIL LITOTES!
I groaned at WANDERS.
I noted TRU and DRU.
This Canadian had never heard of that punk rock group, Propagandhi. One of the founders says that the meaning of the name has been lost over time.
Wishing you all a great day.
AT one time I knew a school secretary named DRU; it was short for Drusilla.
Drusilla, eh? I don't think I've ever heard that name before.
Nice debut, Jared! Yeah, the theme hook was a bit obvious (QUICKBUCKET gave it away to me) but it was entertaining and gave a good foothold toward a FIR. I’m sure Mssr. Cappel will become more devious as he progresses🤣
Loved WHATMAKESYOUTICKET as the payoff for the clue given.
A few days back we had the Suisse Alpe; today we get ‘em in German.
The only fills I felt were a bit questionable were DIS (although it’s slang for “disrespect”, one always sees it spelt in pop culture with two S’s; and IBAR? Never heard anything but I-beam. So, I guess I’ll just write those two off as crosswordese…
Sunday fun-day — and thanks to C.C. for ‘splainin’ the deets 😎
====> Darren / L.A.
Oh, PS — 35D BOUGIE is slang from “bourgeois”, iirc.
====> Darren
Thank you, Darren. I wondered about BOUGIE.
Thanks to CC for the kind review, to the bloggers for the kind comments, and to the editing team for some great cluing. Very excited to make my Sunday debut, not just in the LAT but anywhere.
"Less talk, more rock" is a colloquialism suggesting someone should stop talking about something and start taking action. LITOTES is a figure of speech where an understatement emphasizes a point. (And it's also an anagram of TOILETS).
-Jared Cappel
Thanks and congratulations to Jared for today's puzzle! Hand up for liking your ANON clue. I also liked your clever title.
I do not know if this is still a thing, but FM radio stations often had a smooth voice saying, "KXYZ. LESS TALK, MORE ROCK" for their station identification breaks. (KXYZ is just an example.) If you close your eyes I bet you can hear it in your head.
Thanks to C.C., as well. Such a beautiful photo! I did not know Ugg made flip-flops.
I feel like just about every rock radio station I’ve ever listened to promised “less talk, more rock” at some point.
We have a Drusilla Restaurant in the Drusilla Shopping Center on Drusilla Rd in Baton Rouge. Though I don’t think I’ve ever met a person named Drusilla.
