Hi All!
I always enjoy solving a Doug Peterson puzzle and I was not disappointed with this effort. However, as I was solving, Inspector Gadget kept playing in my head so, I wasn't quite expecting the reveal:
117. Make it big, or a hint to the pairs found in the answers to the starred clues: GO PLACES.
22. *American Samoa's capital: PAGO PAGO. Capital of American Samoa.
29. *Dramatic ending for a tied hockey game: GOLDEN GOAL.
35. *Mohair source: ANGORA GOAT.
55. *"Stranger Things" monster: DEMOGORGON. Click at your own risk.
79. *Symbol often adorned with a "Doodle": GOOGLE LOGO.

100. *Smugly sanctimonious sort: GOODY GOODY.
107. *Wasting time: GOOFING OFF.
15. *Martial arts-themed toy line: LEGO NINJAGO.
66. *Band with the 1998 hit "Iris": GOO GOO DOLLS. I have this CD but, post-solve, I had to Google to know the title of the song I've heard >100 times.
Iris
A fun theme, I think. Now let's get on to the rest of the fill before we get on with our day.
Across:
1. Invitation letters: RSVP. Répondez s'il vous plait or, in English, "respond if you please."5. Three-striper: Abbr.: SGT. The rank of sergeant.

41. Doomscrolling, perhaps: ONLINE. This stackexchange has arguments for and against online being one word or hyphenated. Oh, and as for Doomscrolling, that's the act of watching headline after headline (of usually bad news) in short-form media such as TikTok, Meta's Reels, or YouTube Shorts.
43. "Oh, rats!": AW DARN.
46. Program for aspiring docs: PREMED. Does this get a hyphen? ;-)
49. Readily apparent: OVERT.
51. Basic garage service: LUBE JOB. This is not hyphenated.

63. Dry-__ beef: AGED.

70. Plastic Clue weapon: ROPE. I thought all of the weapons in Clue were made with plastic.

6. Silly prank: GAG.
7. "I didn't wait long enough?": TOO SOON. Can we make Millard Filmore jokes yet?
8. Voice above tenor: ALTO. Eldest is a soprano but can do a great alto falsetto. One time, when she was 12 (or 13?), she blew away our local TexMex joint singing karaoke to Bohemian Rhapsody. 9. This very second: NOW. STAT didn't fit.
10. Hall of Fame pitcher Maddux: GREG. I know he was with the Braves longer (where he secured a WS ring), but he'll always be a Cub to me.
11. Dress for a graduation ceremony: ENROBE. Not the dress you wear but the verb dress. Cute, Doug, cute.
12. City near Buenos Aires: LA PLATA. ?!? Is Buenos Aires also in the Texas panhandle? I'm kidding, it's the capital city of Buenos Aires province of Argentina.

50. "Rosanna" band: TOTO.
According to popular myth, at the first recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them. In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz. After the completion of the first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Another explanation was that singer Bobby Kimball's "real" name was Robert Toteaux, pronounced "toto". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own. - WikiP

I've missed playing with y'all the last few weeks. I've been busy catching up from my short vacation in DC to visit my daughters at school. These next few weeks, my attendance will also be sporadic as I'm attending a couple of cybersecurity conferences.
Play later!

Got it the first time.
Although I’m not familiar with the term
“golden goal” it makes sense. And the rest of the puzzle fell into place nicely.
FIR, so I’m happy.
Good morning!
D-o noticed a lot of O's in this one...that's as close to the theme as he got. O-well. Thanx for the amusement, Doug, and for the expo, Dash-T. (I enjoyed that Q-Tip cartoon.)
DRAWL: After 46 years in Texas, I don't think I've developed a DRAWL, but I don't listen to myself.
TIVO: Before DirecTV offered a DVR, Sony came out with a TIVO-equipped DirecTV receiver. Yeah, I bought one. My DirecTV account is so old I'm probably the only person alive with a 6-digit account number.
ROPE: Our Clue game was the Parker Bros. version -- the weapons were pewter, except for the lead pipe which was made of lead (D'oh) and the ROPE --a thin cotton cord.
Thise were the days. I bought my DirecTV system in Dallas when they were first introduced, and had to wait for a couple of months until the backorder was filled. No DVR in those days. IIRC, I got it from Robards Furniture, which went out of business in 1995. I wrote three monthly checks: one from DirecTV, another from USSB, and I can't remember the third, but it was also a content provider similar to USSB. (No such thing as online bill pay in those days.) Still needed cable or an antenna, since locals weren't available off the bird. IIRC, the early DirecTV boxes had an antenna input, so local channels could be selected from the DirecTV interface. As Karen Carpenter sang, long ago and oh so far away.
For, not from.
Even with the likes of the unknown LEGONINJAGO, DEMOGORGON, and ZAPOTECAN, I was able to GO through this one in 23:40. Very impressive grid crafted by Doug to include that many GOs. Also lots of double O’s not part of the theme, POOL ROOM, TOO SOON, OTOOLE, EVOO, MOOT, BOOS, and MOONWALK, a staggering amount of O’s scattered throughout, 51 by my count. Thank you Doug for your fine work on this one, and to T for the review (I thought I was reading C.C. till you mentioned “wife’s Alfa”).
FIR. Almost easy-peasy this AM. Agree about “POOLROOM” seeming a bit forced, and ‘round these parts (Beverly Hillbillies alert), we call it a biily-ard room (“that thar must be a billy-ard”). That of course is where Jethro may have gone to ETON. Little did Jed Clampett know that there would actually be an NFL player named Billy Ard a decade or two later.
My favorite NORMism: "It's a dog-eat-dog World and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear."
DNK LOWELL, ZAPOTECAN, or DEMOGORGON. Had ShawlS before STOLES. And I waited on filling in LUBEJOB, since it’s almost as out-dated as my television references.
Where is everybody? Nice Sunday BROWSing. I did notice a lot of Gs including some repetitions like PAGO PAGO and GOOGOO, but couldn’t figure out the theme until the reveal and the title didn’t help.
Some unknowns which I was able to guess or perps revealed like DEMOGORGON and LEGONIJAGO.
Also a few unknown names like ANGEL and GREG crossing no less but I was not GOOFING OFF and FIR.
Thank you A-t. Nice review. You fooled me at first. I thought it was CC but when I read you learned HAO in college, I knew CC was not at the helm.
Now, that was a great puzzle! A few more A&E clues than I prefer, but good perps helped take up the slack. Filled with AHA! Moments, and clever misdirection. Didn't solve it quickly, but thoroughly enjoyed it! ADMIRALS...Just read that our Navy has more Admirals than boats. Huh? Is this really a good thing? Wouldn't more boats be a little more useful to a Navy?
Thought the medieval weapons maceS before IRONS
Fred Astaire was MOONWALKing generations before MJ
FIR. I had a bit of a struggle with today's puzzle. Fortunately I got the theme early and that helped immensely with the solve. However the cluing was tough and required a lot of thinking outside of the box.
But overall an enjoyable puzzle.
FIR, but rear end->REGRESS (I read the clue as "backside",) shawls->STOLES, and poli->POLY.
I've mentioned that I grew up in a mom-and-pop restaurant/motel/gas station/convenience store. My mother was "locally famous" for her PIES, and we were the only place in our little town where strawberry rhubarb PIE was (sometimes) available. She got the recipe from the restaurant at Knotts Berry Farm, during a road trip from Eastern Kentucky to California before the days of Interstate highways (and before there was a me, for that matter.)
I've heard that El TIGRE is giving up professional golf to become a full-time demolition derby driver. TOO SOON?
I've spent too much time and consumed too many chili dogs at Pat's POOL ROOM in my little home town. Pat's daughter Linda Pat was a classmate of mine in our (crossword favorite) ELHI.
LA PLATA is also a city on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Its traffic lights are supposedly coordinated to cause as many stops along the main drag (US-301) as practical to slow down traffic for safety reasons, and to encourage tourists to shop or dine instead of just driving through.
Falco blah, blah, blah is gonna be EDIE. She's the Oreo of acting.
Thanks to Doug for the very enjoyable Sunday challenge. As a tribute to the GO-GO theme, here's Wham. And thanks to Bayou Tony for the terrific review. BTW - I lived in West Virginia when Jay Rockefeller ran for and won the governorship. He quipped "I've lived in West Virginia for the last 40 years. I married and raised my children here. So what do my opponents call me? 'Carpetbagger.'"
Good Morning:
I’m a big Doug Peterson fan but today’s offering just isn’t my cup of tea. I did finish w/o help in normal Sunday time, but I thought there were too many unknowns (to me, anyway) and obscure references, even for a Sunday grid. I had no idea what the reveal was going to be, but I found the simple Go Places a letdown, considering the number of themers and their complexity. This was a “juice wasn’t worth the squeeze” experience for me.
Thanks, Doug, for your efforts and thanks, Anon T, for the thorough and enlightening review. Don’t be such a stranger, though, we miss you!
Have a great day.
And just remember, only half our ships can be deployed at one time, due to repairs and maintenance bottlenecks. Our newest, biggest, mega billion dollar aircraft aircraft carrier will be in the shop for a year to 18 months to correct the many design defects not caught when built. Plus, the heads (toilets) don't work. The took an environmently friendly "green" design from a cruise ship, instead of a warship, and every time (Often!) It costs $400,000 dollars to fix the system! Your tax dollars at work!
Then you'll love this and this. :-) -T
10:42. Way too easy and the theme is flimsy at best. So two go's count as a theme? Ugh.
It was a name-calling ( VR GOOGLES for TWERP & NERD), fat-shaming (Roly_POLY) fest of unknowns today that were filled by easy perps. The GO's were obvious from the start, but of the four long down fills, the goggles were the only ones I'd heard of. GOOGOO DOLLS, LEGO NINJA GO, and ZAPOTECAN weren't known by me. Neither were "Stranger Things" and DEMOGROGON and a few others in the puzzle.
Foreign words were abundant today. ALTO, GAOL (British is foreign), TIGRE, ZAPOTECAN, LANG (Robert, not MR BURNS, made up words), LA PLATA (silver), SAO Tome, Ni HAO. At least I knew PAGO PAGO.
MJ wasn't doing the MOONWALK to the musicians this morning -TOTO and The O'JAYS.
LUBE JOB- has anybody had one in the last 30 years? I don't even have a grease gun anymore.
Tony, they may use the AGAVE in SONORA but it doesn't go in a pina COLADA.
My NITRO boost became a TURBO and my TWIST adjustment was a TWEAK.
Tony, since you put LSU's Angel Reese's picture up, I learned something interesting yesterday at a funeral. I was talking with the deceased BIL, an ex-LSU lineman, and in the spring of his Jr. year he was assigned the task of showing Woodlawn's Terry Bradshaw around the LSU campus. I burst out laughing because I knew from others that his ACT score was in single digits and could not be admitted. That's why he went to LA Tech.
IRONS in this case refer to golf clubs, I think.
Jinx, DirecTV began operation on June 17, 1994. I was intrigued, but not wanting to be described as an early adopter, I waited until the next day to buy mine.
What did the deceased BIL say back to you?
Musings
-Ten gimmicks in a very entertaining puzzle.
-My gazpacho had a POTATO first. Uh, this was not vichyssoise, Gary.
-Angel has embraced the role of the WNBA villain.
-One Garrison Keeler monologue raves of the incredible rhubarb pie that is served at Lake Woebegone’s Chatterbox Café. He says that under the sugary surface, the rhubarb hints at the bitterness of life in his town.
-FWIW – I love “straight up” rhubarb pie without the strawberries and that is hard to find.
-LUBE JOBS are as rare carburetor repair in today’s car maintenance
-REGRESS – My alcoholic brother told me that stopping drinking was very easy as he had done it dozens of times
-GREG Maddux was a real pitcher, not just a thrower, who could go many innings because he did not have to throw 100 mph. His Atlanta Braves beat my KC Royals last night as the Royals' best reliever gave up 6 runs in the bottom of the ninth.
-My classmate of 1964 has lived in Tuscaloosa, AL for decades and his acquired DRAWL still makes me laugh
-Nebraska governor Pillen is in trouble over a $2.5M contract he gave to one of his consultants without soliciting BIDS. I saw him in church last night where he might have been praying for forgiveness or guidance.
-Yes, Tony, CONAGRA was founded in Grand Island, NE in 1919 and then moved to Omaha. They are famous for developing the Swanson TV Dinner in 1953.
He knew about the ACT scores and couldn't understand how he wasn't admitted because there were others with similar scores on the team. He was more interested in discussing Terry's HS predecessor at QB, Trey Prather, who got killed in Viet Nam after joining the Marines. It's strange that Terry sat on the bench twice. I HS, Prather was the All-State QB and Terry was on the bench and in college at LA Tech, the QB was the late Phil Robertson (Duck Dynasty). My brother was on the Tech team with both of them. My guess is he went to Tech because he didn't think he could dislodge Prather as QB at LSU. But he did okay on the Steelers, occasionally being bench for Hanratty and Joe Gilliam when Chuck Knoll got mad.
Interesting and clever Sunday puzzle, many thanks, Doug. And your commentary and pictures are always interesting and appreciated, Anon T, thank you for those too.
Well, in this puzzle we begin with the request to RSVP to answer a Sergeant who was trying to save an ANGEL from being deported to one of the ISLES near PAGO PAGO, where he thought he had a GOLDEN GOAL playing hockey. When it was over he posted a note ON LINE saying AW DARN, and we could tell right away that he didn't do well. But fortunately he was able to enroll in a PRE-MED program, where he may soon have become a SNOB pursuing a lovely SONORA. She found him a real GOODY-GOODY and almost a SAINT, and so they got married and are now ALLIES who are GOOFING OFF and drinking PINA COLADA, and planning to go on a MOON WALK to PLACES this summer. Let's hope they have a good time and that the marriage stays intact and that we'll get to see them with their family down the line.
Have a lovely Sunday and a happy and healthy week coming up, everybody.
Super Sunday. Thanks for the fun, Doug and AnonT.
I had to work through the grid several times before I had enough perps for some of the unknowns. But I did see the GO PLACES theme (even before the reveal, I saw the GO GOs that matched the Don’t Stop title).
There were even some backward GOs in some of those themers (GOOGOO, DEMOGORGON, LOGO) and even the non- themer ANALOG. GOGGLES, and SEGO, EGO (already found by AnonT) were Easter Eggs (as in that GOOGLE LOGO).
Hand up for not knowing LEGONINJAGO, DEMOGORGON, and ZAPOTECAN. I had Shawl before STOLE,, but the KNIT clue told me that Shawl would not appear twice.
Sorry, AnonT and HuskerG, but I have never heard of CONAGRA, and don’t recognize any of those brands pictured. I assume they are not available in Canada.
Wishing you all a great day.
Hola! I love a puzzle with SAINT and ANGEL in it. Thank you, Doug Peterson! And thank you, AnonT, for walking us through it. I have been to SONORA a few times, for shopping, a wedding and on the way to southern Mexico.
My grandchildren have GOGGLES which are, I presume, VIRTUAL REALITY GOGGLES.
I know SENECA in a very different meaning.
Los TIGRES del Norte is a famous mariachi band.
It's time for me to GO PLACES and do some errands.
I hope you are enjoying your Sunday, everyone!
gLES which I assume are VR; is that "virtual reality"?
Late to the party, (I was working on the 4/8 write up...) and then It was the last day to use a 30% off coupon at Harbor Freight. All of the things I wanted just didn't pan out. The springs were too small, the soldering supplies too expensive, and I think I might have saved 0.15 cents with the coupon on a one use epoxy glue dispenser...
So I'm with Irish Miss on this one, the theme was go go good, but having to finish with multiple alpha runs across multiple Naticks just sucked all the fun out of it. They may have been personal naticks, but I had no clue with angel/greg, or Lorna/LaPlata. Never heard of "golden goal" before, but if it had not been part of the theme I may have given up...
Of course, The Blog to the rescue again. You made my day with Iris by The GooGoo Dolls! Lovely tune that I always wanted to play on guitar, but the tuning B,D!D!D!D!D! Will seriously snap your strings, or worse, warp your neck! I went to find a video on how painful this song is to tune on guitar, and accidentally came across a post from 2 weeks ago, that combines standard tuning, fingerpicking techniques, and clever use of voicing. I can't wait to try it...
Just be thankful that the browser is named Duck Duck Go instead of Go Duck Go, or we might have had another theme fill.
I loved this puzzle in spite of that UNMEANT nose-wrinkler.
LOATHE-->DETEST.
NEARBY-->AROUND.
NEVADA-->SONORA.
MEAL-->NERD.
Good reading all your comments.
Since you're a cheapskate like me, watch the supermarket ads for LORNA Doone cookies coupons. Really good offering from the ovens of Nabisco.
Took 12:49 for me to listen to the Go-Go's.
I didn't know "Zapotecan", but years ago my youngest son played with Lego Ninjago. In "Hastings hoosegow/gaol" I didn't understand any of the words, but now I know Hastings is a town and "gaol" means jail there.
With all these Os, let's be even more grateful there were none of those pesky circles.
Still got a grease gun, Big; I have an old BMW 1600-2 with U-joints on both the halfshafts and the driveshaft…

Another killer piece from the esteemed Doug P. Egads, 24 (yep, two dozen!) G’s in this grid. The only reason I noticed is due to my quirk of using varied style of writing in the letters (to keep me from getting bored using the same writing in everything); this puzzle was all lower-case, using a style where the letter “g” has the two stacked/connected circles — just a bit labor-intensive to hand write (yeah, okay, I admit it: I get weird occasionally…😵💫). ANYway, lots of G’s. I’m just kind of surprised that, with all the band and music ref’s Doug used, he missed putting in The Go-Gos!
Very enjoyable Sunday challenge, Mssr. Peterson, thank you 🤙🏽😎
Nice to see you back, Anon-T — very entertaining review with a lot of content. Your “Stranger Things” DEMOGORGON link was pretty interesting; we’d watched the show but I never grokked the whole schtick behind this weirdo demon. And since you brought it up, T, I have a question (probably best fielded by C.C. about that Chinese greeting in 19A, “ni hao”; a Chinese gf once taught me to say “ni hao ma?”, telling me that literally translated it means “have you eaten?” Inquiring minds, etc…
I may have all y’all beat on the DirecTV front: Some guy walked into the BMW shop where I had my office at the time, hawking this “new satellite television system from Hughes”; the deal was so good I took the chance and signed up for it. Free install, free hardware, free first three months and a 100% money-back guarantee. We kept it for over 35 years until AT&T basically ruined it — thank the bean counters, as always. Now, of course, we have two or three paid streams and watch a lot of OTA stuff.

AnonT- Rush at the Juno Awards in Hamilton, Ontario tonight - “ As they hinted to fans, Rush did have something special in store for the Junos: they kicked off the show with a historic performance: the first time the group has played publicly with new drummer Anika Nilles since the death of Neil Peart in 2020.
But the spirit of Peart was present, as footage of the legendary drummer appeared behind the band during the performance.
It also marks the first time the band has performed on the Junos stage. They chose a deep cut to mark the occasion: Finding My Way, the first song of their first album, released in 1974.” CBC news

Darren, "Ni hao ma" literally translates to "Are you well?" and by extension, "How are you?" or just simply "Hello." The greeting "Have you eaten?" is also often said but it not "Ni hao ma." The polite response is "I have already eaten."
We went to the Journey concert Saturday night in NOLA. DW was very disappointed. Too loud, lousy lead singer (no Steve Perry). Carlos Santana is performing Monday, but I can't go, due to a 7 am appointment Tuesday morning at a hospital.
That’s too bad that you were disappointed. Best wishes for your hospital appointment.
