  1. Not the easiest
Tuesday puzzle, by any means, but at least the reveal was helpful.
    FIR, so I’m happy.

  2. FIW. I guessed right at AVA x VAcUE.; wrong at AcE x VAcUE. Never heard of A/S/L, and assumed that Patti was force-feeding us another lesson from her gender primer.

Back when I drank sodas I preferred PEPSI, but it was easier to order a Coke. Most places with fountain drinks offer one or the other, with gas station convenience stores being exceptions. PEPSIco ownership of Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC gave Coke salespeople a powerful sales slogan - "don't feather the nest of your competitor." To counter that, PEPSIco spun off the restaurants into Yum! Brands.

Thanks to Zachary and Shannon for the tough Tuesday grid, and to Ha2la for the excellent review. Loved that crossword-adorned room.

  3. Good morning!

Growing up only 50 miles from Green Bay, d-o can relate to this CHEESE HEADS theme. In my ute we'd drop by the cheese factory in our little town about 1PM, after the still-warm curd had been sliced and salted. It was like squeaky popcorn. Yum. The LA LAKER name makes more sense when you learn the team moved from Minnesota to LA around 1960. The Wite-Out only came out to correct DRAWL to TWANG. Nice one, Shannon. Great cartoons today, Hahtoolah, as usual.

  4. In the South, coke is often used as any variety of soda.

  5. Thanks, Hatoolah, for all of the great cartoons and for the shout out at 50 Across.

  6. FIR. I got off to a rocky start with the NW remaining blank for some time. Additionally I did not know Thanos since I'm not a fan. Also the "GOAT" reference was unknown. This was basically harder than most Tuesday puzzles.
On the bright side I picked up on the theme quickly and was able to get all the various cheeses.
    Overall a so-so puzzle.

  7. Good Morning:

I went astray right away with Shame/Abash, and Willy/Wonka, both of which slowed me down. The A/S/L had me stymied for a while, thinking it could be American Sign Language, but that wouldn’t work. After correcting Shame to Abash, everything fell into place and the puzzle was solved. I liked the theme but the reveal came too early and made the rest of the solve too easy and quick.

Thanks, Zachary and Shannon, and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the entertaining and informative review. The comics were great, as usual, with the Jack/Swiss rivalry, Crossword scene of the crime room, and the empty bird cage being my favorites.

    Have a great day.

  8. The whole North pretty much stayed blank, except for one wrong entry, drawl, until I finished the lower part of this puzzle. When I returned North and came up with AMERICAN DAD, I filled most of the clues except the NW. DNK AVA, entered AmE for AGE. So DNF. On a Tuesday!

The theme finally became clear at BRIE LARSON. The reveal was easy then.

I can never remember ELOTE, since it’s never been concrete for me, and IS PEPSI OKAY was also hard to come by.

Anyway, thank you Hahtoolah for the many cheese cartoons and all the good info.

  9. found this one very straightforward, 4:23 to solve with the only mistake being "anger" in 1A. For some reason I saw the matrix on "is pepsi okay" even though that is an obviously insane clue. Thanks!

  10. I struggled a bit, because I don’t even know who Seth MacFarlane is, let alone his cartoon series. Same with the “Room”, best actress. Throw in comparisons of Jordan and LeBron and I couldn’t think of them as sports “goats” (my thought was losers, not greats). Then the cheese theme hit me, and I was able to finish the puzzle, but FIW. I thought ASL had something to do with American Sign Language, and also had no clue who wrote “Hacks”, considering I never even heard of “Hacks”.

For over 20 years, we gather with some friends on Christmas Day in Houston’s Chinatown for dim sum. Standing room only and a 1/2 hour wait for tables. The mall and even the grocery store are all open. It is my favorite Christmas tradition although we usually pass on the “chicken feet".

    1. My husband took chicken feet at a Chinese buffet without knowing what they were. After one bite and then asking the waitress what they were, he did not eat the rest. LOL! And this is a guy who will eat pork hocks.

  11. Crunchier by half compared to yesterday. I’m no cheese whiz but BRIE is a stand alone word for a type of cheese unlike the other theme answers. Cheese that’s not a cheese?: HEAD CHEESE

Know ELOTA from CWs. Liked “Civic minded”’ HONDA. WEES re: A/S/L

Started to fill ”Family Guy” (one of my favorites) for AMERICAN DAD but too short. My grandkids (all teens now) are getting too old for Grand DAD jokes. “Whaddya call a female MANATEE? … a womantee 🙄

I don’t believe Fred’s pet DINO is a T. rex unless he’s a puppy (or whatever you call baby dinosaurs)🦖

    Let’s be ____ about what’s in a hot dog… FRANK
“BAM”! The sound of _____ ABASH.
Time to re-up on a renter’s contract : RELEASE DATE
    Not a lotta money:____ sum…DIM

    Loved the all the toons

    Have a great day 😊

  12. Musings
-“New to me” cluing for VAGUE, HEIR and AGE provided for an interesting start and incorrect DRAWL didn’t help. :-)
-Sunday as a day of rest is a very quaint notion these days
-You can see this potentially watchable movie’s RELEASE DATE and we might shell out some bucks for a real-life chocolatier.
-Not only is COKE the only cola served in Disney World,it offers colas from around the world in it at Club Cool in EPCOT

  13. Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Shannon and Zachary, and Hahtoolah.
I FIRed with a short delay in the NW corner, and saw the CHEESEHEADS theme at the reveal.
AMERICAN is not sold in Canada because of our dairy rules. Google tells me that it is like our Kraft processed cheese slices. Is that correct?

One inkblot to change FRies to FRANK
I thought of drawl before TWANG, and waited for perps to decide between Willie or WONKA.
AGE required perps with that clue.

We had some multicultural food (to add to all the cheese) with DIM sum, ELOTE, EEL. Plus some RYE bread and a ROAST (beef STEER), or even GOAT. Plus ATTA and YEAST for roti or buns.
I smiled when IS PEPSI OKAY filled.
I noted TIRES over SPARE, THY crossing SKY.

    CHER is well preserved.

Wishing you all a great day.

    1. Kraft processed cheese slices in Canada are the same as American cheese slices in the U.S. Do you also have Velveeta, another kind of processed “cheese”, and very soft?

      Delete
    2. Regular American cheese is not a processed cheese. It's a yellow cheese, aged in wooden boxes and usually sold in "bricks." It can be mild, medium, or sharp.

      Delete
  14. Took 3:23 today to grate my nerves.

I knew the Actresses of the Day (Brie Larson & Cher). I failed the foreign languages lessons (Lao & kappa).

If you aren't familiar with "Hacks," you should correct that soon. It is a well-written, funny show. Think of it as a modern-day "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

  15. Like others, I found the clueing to be less direct than is usual for a Tuesday. A/S/L was completely unknown as it clearly wasn’t American Sign Language. I did not know of AVA Daniel’s, and found the clue for VAGUE to be, well, an “unhelpful hint.”

But I did enjoy the puzzle overall, and Hahtoolah’s review was a pure delight. Loved all of the cartoons, but I think CSI: Green Bay is my favorite. Thanks to Shannon, Zachary, and Hahtoolah for the fun!

  16. Wees, and especially thank you to Hahtoolah, for the fun write up and pics. I could add that finishing what is supposed to be a thought exercise by doing several alphabet runs is more like playing Wack a Mole...

    Ava/age/vague, hmm, very vague indeed...
Bird home=cage, seems more like a prison to me...
    Thanos?

    Just some thoughts:
If American Cheese is that yellow stuff, what is White American? (DW is always telling me I should say Cheddar at the Deli if I want yellow cheese, still not sure why...)

Dictionary synonyms for Gadget.. Hmm seems incomplete to me...

Wine container wood = Oak will forever be incomplete to me, after watching a rather lengthy explanation to the mystery of The Mary Celeste. In an attempt to make it short(er), the containers must be "White Oak" and not "Red Oak," due to the cellular structure of the wood. Red Oak will leak, an easy mistake to make, but unfortunately the ship was carrying barrels of alcohol, and with the fumes filling the ship, it is believed they abandoned ship fearing an explosion.

    1. Yellow American is White American with Annato (or beta-carotene) added for color.

Cheddar is a different cheese altogether.

  17. As several others mentioned, I thought of American Sign Language at A/S/L. 14 names, DNK 5, including AVA. The NW was last to fill, with the "V" and "G" the two last cells. I had to wait on a few perps for WILLY/WONKA. FIR in 14.

As you might guess, I loved the CHEESEHEAD theme, being a cheesehead myself. As I worked my way through the CW I kept thinking, "It's almost like this CW was created just for lil' ol' cheesehead ME." I only wish it had been published on my BD, Oct 24.

    5D = ????

20A = HOTDOG? Too long, as is WIENER and WEENIE. FRANK took longer than it should have to pop into my head.

Very good CW, thanx ZE-B&SR. A bit of crunch for a Tuesday, but manageable. I don't watch sitcoms, so any clues deriving from sitcoms leaves me clueless.

Thanx too to Hatoolah for the wonderful write-up. Great 'toons, as always. I especially liked the Swiss cheese 'toon.

I was pretty amazed that no networks aired the Packers/Bears game. It's the oldest rivalry in football, a rivalry that existed before there was an NFL. I had to go to a sports bar to watch it, so went to Slacker's, which is a large Packer bar here in FLL. Packers played far better than I predicted, winning 31-7. I hope they play that well the rest of the season. I love the Packers field goal kicker's name: Trey Smack!

  18. I didn’t have much trouble with this one, although I did need perps for two of the themers, AMERICAN DAD, and BRIE LARSON, plus AVA and THANOS (which made me think of that scam blood testing company Theranos, which the owner is currently doing a lengthy prison sentence). FIR in 10:30. I like the Packers, I even bought a share of their stock several years ago, but I’d never wear one of those foam CHEESE HEADS. At the game on Sunday a Bears fan wore one, but atop it was a giant cheese grater, but alas the Bears got smoked 31-7. Thanksgiving Shannon and Zach for the puzzle and Hahtoolah for the recap, like I’ve said before, nobody out cartoons you! Also I especially liked the take on the Eurythmics song “sweet dreams are made of cheese….”

  19. Hola! I love CHEESE and this puzzle really tickled me. Thank you, Zachary and Shannon! I also love ROAST and ELOTE, so this puzzle HIT THE JACKPOT! And for me, PEPSI is definitely OKAY. I find Coke too harsh.
My sister, Yolanda, has acquired a TWANG since living in the South for many decades.
Last night Josh Brolin was a GUEST on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but I had no idea he was on THANOS as I've never heard of it.
I really like CHER and "Moonstruck" will forever be my favorite movie of hers.
When The Big Bang show first started, I watched faithfully, but then like so many shows, it got repetitive and boring.
My ballot arrived in the mail, so I will mark mine and wait to see who will be ELECTed.
    Have a peaceful day, everyone!
