Good morning, Melissa Bee, C.C. and gang - this was a fun puzzle for me; I enjoyed the fresh cluing and the long fills.

I had to bounce around quite a bit to finish - the first pass had about 60% filled in. I needed the perps for 'Lehi' and to get a start with 'chic' -- 'a la mode' had me going in a different direction. Took me until the third theme answer to pick up on it.

Mustang Mel, great job with the write-up -- had a great laugh w/the Grumpy Old Men outtakes; loved those guys together. Also found the missile silo link most interesting.

Today is Smiley Power Day.

Did You Know?:

- The earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust.

Off to the gym.

Morning, all!

Pretty straightforward and fast today. EAKINS and TIO [Pepe] were complete unknowns, but the perps took care of them in short order. Figuring out the theme actually helped me to get the beginning of 14D.

LEHI was a bit of a misdirection, since it refers to a scriptural prophet (from the Book of Mormon) and not a modern-day prophet (church leaders today are referred to as "prophets" and I thought they were going for somebody like Joseph Smith or Brigham Young).

My favorite clue was "An amoeba has one" for CELL.

The earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust.

Oh, good. And here I was all worried about all the stuff we were launching into space and the effect it would eventually have on our planet's gravity... ^_^

Good Morning, Melissa Bee and Friends. I loved your Winnie-the-Pooh take on this puzzle. I breezed through the top and bottom third of the puzzle, but slowed down a bit in the middle section. Fun puzzle with some fun clues

I learned that "The Dog Ate My Homework" is not as serious as a Lie, it is only a FIB.

For the readers, I highly recommend Amos Oz's book, A Tale of Love and Darkness.

Jeannie: I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your niece. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

In keeping with Melissa's Theme, here is today's QOD: Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again? ~ A. A. Milne

Morning Melissa B, CC and All,

Great write up Melissa. Keeping to your theme I was like Tigger bouncing all over the place as well. Starred clues didn't print which left a lot of holes. Spot Check gave me Hole Punch and perps gave way to Predicament. That was enough of a foothold to get finished. Really enjoy Wednesdays. Great job Jennifer.

Donna's puzzle kicked butt yesterday!

Jeannie, Sorry for your loss. Positive mental brain waves heading your way.

Belated Anniversary wishes Bob and JD. Jill and I are celebrating our 15th today.

Happy Hump Day!

Good day folks,

A fun puzzle with a lot of clever cluing that had me scratching my noodle. Lehi, cloyed, Kirin, Eakins & chic were the main culprits. 10D had me reeling. I was thinking the resultant penalty phase, not an assurance of acquittal. The NE & MidE were a grind.

MB, thanks for the links, especially Grumpy Old Men. Jack and Walter never let me down, alway hilarious.

Favorite clue was 66A, "He's got the life"/ Riley. Jennifer, my pup thanks you for recognizing him.

Jeannie, deepest condolences for your loss.

Rain has moved on, my mood has brightened, so it's time to get my butt in gear. Happy hump day.

Good morning Melissa and all, a really fun puzzle today. I seemed to be exactly in tune with Jennifer and found the cluing to be straight forward and easy. Normally I struggle with the Wednesday puzzle, but not today. I struggled a bit with the NW corner as I did not know Lehi, but the perps took care of that. Cloyed and Tio were pure guesses for me. Otherwise, a fun and easy puzzle.

Melissa, I really liked your links today, especially the Walter and Jack outtakes and the silos.

Thanks Jennifer for an entertaining run this morning.

Jeannie, I am sorry to hear of your loss.

Here is wishing you and the Misses a Happy 15th anniversary Mainiac.

Hope you all have a great Wednesday.

Good Morning, folks. Seems like just a couple hours ago I was here.

Thank you Jennifer Nutt for a great Wednesday puzzle. I was able to get through it easily. Seemed like a Tuesday edition to me. Thank you Melissa for the swell review, as always.

Got started easily in the NW. Perped LEHI. The theme was easy and it helped with the entire puzzle.

We just had STYX the other day.

Always like AERIE. Been a CW answer forever.

I wish the geese in our area would form a VEE and fly away for the winter. They stay and leave quite a mess. I believe all the water retention/flood prevention ponds are what keep them here.

Steak Fry tonight! See you tomorrow.

Melissa; Excellent write-up & links.

Enjoyed the JAM SESSION shout-out to Jazz.

My PREDICAMENT was the NW corner.
LEHI & AMOS were wags followed by a WTF?

EAKINS, the "Realist" who painted the aptly named "The Gross Clinic," all perps.

Three learning moments on a Wednesday.

Thanks for a FUN time Jennifer.

Hmmmm, a KIRIN at sunset would be a nice change.
Cheers !!!

Thank you Jennifer Nutt for a very nice puzzle and thank you Melissa for the very nice links and a wonderful blog commentary.

I loved the picture of Winnie the Pooh - so very cute -

and the pictures of the missile silos just about floored me .... I never knew those photographs would have been unclassified, by the government. The detail presented in those pictures was unbelievable .... if the Russians ( and the other nuclear countries - ) know about them, I guess we, the citizens might as well - since we (just about ) paid for them. Still, the pictures are awe spiring and somewhat very scary - this is what nuclear holocaust is all about.

Have a nice day, you all.

Good morning,
Sometime you feel like a NUTT, sometimes our own mb. What a fun puzzle and write up.

I see the TANDEM as the minitheme, as we have Highlands miss : LASS, Highlands family : CLAN: Hosp. area : ICU., Hosp. areas : ORS. operating rooms.:Beetle Bailey" dog : OTTO, Garfield" dog : ODIE.

Speaking of the Highlands, anyone else read the Hamish Macbeth mysteries by M.C. Beaton?

Dennis, now if the earth is gaining 100 tons a day, maybe that explains why I gain a pound a day- it is space dust, not the cranberry orange scone! I see why that fact led you to the gym.

Happy Hump Day Puzzlers! Nice blog and picture MB!

Musings
-So Sorry Jeannie.
-Wanna build a nuke? You’ll need isotope U235 not U238.
-I thought TANDEM was an adjective and not a synonym for the bike
-Fiesta Bowl scandal this winter did not help college football’s image
-Geese were not on course yesterday. Must have been snacking elsewhere now that the goslings can fly. Definitely made for greens with less, uh, clutter!
-Do you think The Gross Clinic had some sanitation issues? Gross!
-No idea on TIO, LEHI, EAKINS or KIRIN but perps got ‘em.
-Old home town had underground Silos built among huge above ground grain repositories during my high school years
-Ann Margaret attracted to Walter Matthau? Hope springs eternal!
-Happy Anniversary Mainiac and JD.

Jeannie, sorry.

PS: Road trip in the rain (1st in 3 weeks) today. Don't anyone tell the Irish I'm blogging and driving. I'll be in deep _____. Wait, I can't say that, can I, Dodo?

Husker Gary said...

Argyle, What a great clip! I forwarded it to my club manager and know he’ll get a kick out of it. The geese bother him and the grounds crew a lot more than they do me. I love seeing them and it is cool how you can go up to within a few feet of them and they don’t even flinch when you swing a club. My opinion might be altered if I had to deal with massive volumes of goose dung day in and day out but I enjoy them and the other wildlife on the course. The animals are just a natural consequence of being located next to a major river like the Platte.

I heard him say he put out some coyote decoys last year that turn in the wind and it helped a lot but they got stolen by someone and he had not replaced them.

Good morning everyone. Thanks for the write-up, Melissa.

Not too difficult for a hump day solve. I did stall for a while in the ENE, but it got sussed out ok. The solve progressed top to bottom through the center and then outward to the edges. No PREDICAMENTS were encountered. Note that 6d and 64a are both 'uncle' clues. Seemed to be a higher than normal % of 'J' and 'K' words. BRER was a gimme. I enjoy Brer Rabbit™ brand blackstrap molasses with my oatmeal every morning. Délicieux. Thanks Jenn for a fun puzzle.

Jeannie, sorry for your loss. Bummer.

Have a good day.

Good Morning melissa, C.C. et al.

Loved the Winnie Ille Pu theme, Melissa! And thanks for all the great links. The picture of Elie Weisel is particularly haunting, I thought. You can see all the suffering in his expressive eyes.

I loved this puzzle. I fell asleep last night before I finished it, so it took me about 9 ½ hours to complete. Not exactly a speed run, eh? This theme has been done before, but Jennifer has packed six theme entries into this one, with two of the long down entries intersecting the others, which makes it much more elegant, IMO.

Argyle, I loved that golf link. Reminds me of a few years ago, when I hit a fairway wood on one of the long water holes at my local course and actually hit a goose with the ball. It’s the only time I have ever had a “birdie” on that hole!

Maniac, great picture! You make a lovely couple, and I think you done good!

Jeannie, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. She must have been quite young? So sad.

Have a lovely day, everyone.

Husker Gary said...

MB, I just went back and looked at the wonderful pix of the silos you posted. It is disgusting to contemplate what great uses that could have been found for the money spent on those holes back in the 60’s.

Of course the picture of the man and woman at their consoles reminded me of the opening scenes of War Games where one man refusing to turn his key led to the disastrous implementation of the WOPR computer

Liked this puzzle; I could do it, all but the NE corner. Had "lie" which didn't help figure out what to do with the jury.

Melissa B. what a great write up. I too like the Winnie the Pooh print for an intro.

Argyle, thanks for the Border Collie link. They are such special dogs. The Ft. Myers airport uses them to keep birds away. I've seen a couple of competitions. Wonderful to see.

Hello, Cyber Friends! Thanks, Melissa, for a lovely blog.

What a smooth Wednesday puzzle! I filled most on the first pass but waited for AMOS and LEHI to emerge which they did. There is a LEHI, AZ as well. I often wondered how it was named.

Also waited for LAS, LOS as it could have been either one. Agree that UNC and TIO are part of the TANDEM.

TEMPE, AZ, yea! The new Fiesta Bowl president is expected to clean up the organization.

I really liked the long fill and actual words with very few abbreviations. Thank you, Jennifer.

Everyone, have a wonderful Wednesday! It's the gym for me.

You really shouldn't have to label/slur/libel/denigrate other peoples intentions/ frame of mind/opinions .... your own personal opinions are just as welcome.

BTW, I think you and the/a/an ? Irish are wonderful people/couple/pair/item .... but for the sake of your own blood pressure, do try to control your ire/shoulder chip/temper/bile.

Good Morning All, me neither about LEHI. I started with LEVI, but finally remembered that is my nephew and one of the tribes of Israel. Had to wait for --L---NCHER to double back and fill in the blanks.

I really like mb's "oh, bother" theme. My daughter's earliest bedtime stories were of the 100 Aker Wood.

melissa's 23A)link was charming. When I think of a TANDEM bicycle built for two, I think of HAL's Daisy. Maybe not Isaac Asimov (according to Hahtool's QOD on Monday), but I bet some people suffer from logizomechanophobia due to HAL.

Hi all -

Not bad for a Wed puzzle :)

Like Dick, the NW corner beat me up a little. I did know LASS, SILO and STET but had no idea of the Mormon prophet, writer Oz or Isotope. I had to look those up.

Had to laugh at 47D BIBLICAL MOUNT/ASS. Great mis-direction.

I don't equate CHIC with A LA MODE. I think of ice cream on top of pie (or cake).

Argyle, I could not get the clip to play..it got stuck soon after it started.

Hello everybody. Thanks for the writeup, Melissa. I too found the missile silo page interesting; brought back memories of my tour of duty at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, way back in the mid 60's.

Nice fun puzzle today. I thought it was well constructed and interestingly clued. Also liked the long fill. I, too, am not up on the Mormon prophets or Israeli writers, so the NW corner was a bit tough. Overconfidently filled in ASAHI for the Japanese beer, TARGET for goal, and FAIT for the French "done," which threw me off for a while.

Smile producers: TEETHE, RILEY, CELL, and LITERAL.

Frown producers: OHSO, ICEES, and UNC.

Clear Ayes, Marti, et al - being the rocket scientist that I am, several years ago I came up with the idea of putting a card table in the store and always having a jigsaw puzzle in progress. Customers who were shopping could stop, maybe put a few pieces in, and maybe realize the fun in putting one together and buy one.

Enter the Senior Citizens With Nothing To Do All Day. After two weeks of opening-until-closing company, I tactfully shut it down, citing the need for more space for products. Some stuff hits the wall and sticks, some doesn't.

By the way, if you've never tried a two-sided puzzle, don't. You'll end up with bags under your eyes that would make American Tourister proud.

Look at their website. They are the Cadillac, sorry Lexus, of jigsaw puzzles ( low price $ 650.00 ). I don't know if this could be considered an endorsement, but Barbara Bush was one of their customers (!). Their 'pieces' are made of soft wood, are hand cut, with finials, (your) initials, square edges inside the puzzle, empty spaces inside the puzzle, come with upto 3 layers, non-straight edges and corners on the outside of the puzzles, and they will even put in pieces in shape of - golf clubs and tennis racquets in the puzzles, on request.

Dennis & Marti, I don't know if this is really The World's Most Difficult Jigsaw Puzzle, but I do know that it was scattered all over my dining room table for almost a full January a few years ago. A rather sadistic relative thought it would make a "fun" Christmas present. For weeks afterward, at night I was counting double-sided dalmatians instead of sheep.

The radiology department of one of our local hospitals has a couple of tables with jigsaw puzzles. One is in the patients' treatment waiting room and the other is in the "waiting for a patient" room. The patients usually don't have to wait more than 15 minutes OR SO, but their friends/drivers (who aren't allowed inside the radiation department) have a little more time to fiddle with their puzzles. It's a good pastime.

There is a very nice Google doodle today - on the lunar eclipse - and the 'degree', and shading of the eclipse can be 'manipulated' by the user.

Joann and I just returned from Omaha where our primary objective to see Omaha’s fabulous Lauritzen’s Gardens Botanical Gardens.

We then drove to the waterfront and had a nice lunch on the banks of the ANGRY Missouri River that is flooding on both sides but more on the Iowa side. Omaha is consumed with sandbagging around everything down there as their trademark event, The College World Series is being held in Omaha's brand new $128 Million T.D. Ameritrade ballpark.

Good afternoon, Melissa Bee, C.C. and folk,

On the first go 10a. FIB could have been LIE but not for long! 10d.FIX THE JURY and 12D.BURRO provided a quick correction. Though not related, I'm hungry and I wished I'd asked Dora to make A BURRO (burrito) for me today! She was very busy so I ordered a pizza instead!

These days 13a. ISSUES are what drama queens have though I thought of magazine issues.

38a. Tempe is a given as my daughter went to ASU and still lives in Tempe and it is just 11 miles from my house.

TIA PEPE

I will come back to the jigsaw links, I really enjoy those!

@Jeannie, :`( I send positive energy your way!
Maniac, happy anniversary! You are still newlyweds! Beautiful couple!
@BillG and JD, happy anniversary!

Have a great evening and

I'm out.

Hats off to Frenchie for an entertaining link. I was so glad it was not another poor little dog being tortured to wear a hat for its master. Imagine a chihuahua with a sombrero¡Ay, caramba!

Five and out – to put a cap on our discussion today, here is a picture of the 17th Fairway with geese and offspring where I play. If you look closely, you may be able to see quite a few of my golf balls in that little creek at the left.

Marti: Love the jigsaw site. I'll have to bookmark it so I can play more often.

Happy Anniversary to Bill and Barbara!

The local paper had "issues" this morning and I didn't get my CW fix until after noon. Not the way to start the day.

First, Jeannie, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Nothing is worse than losing someone at that age. Nothing.

The puzzle was entertaining, but not enough to get me over my snit about the late delivery. The blog was far better. Thanks Melissa.

Your link to Ari doing a Boss cover made me think of this bit. It's juvenile humor, but it is funny.

Hola Everyone, My mistakes made me stub my toe (again) today. I put in Lie for Fib, Erg for Job, and Left for Bend. That whole NE corner took way too long to finish.

I also had Ahso for Quite, so the Spanish article became Las which could have been correct, No?

I was glad to see that others didn't know Lehi, Kirin, Eakins, & Amos Oz. I had to look up these names in order to finish the grid today.

The Biblical mount being Ass and not the name of a mountain took me off guard for a while. But I had a nice laugh when I did fill in with the perps.

All in all a good learning puzzle for me and a great writeup, MB. Thanks.

Belated happy anniversary, JD. Bill G. and Maniac a happy anniversay to you and your wives. Enjoy your day.
I thought the Google Moon Eclipse graphic was really great!

Jig saw puzzles have been a part of the Jury waiting room here in San Jose for a while. At least when you have to wait, sometimes for several hours, to resume a trial or get picked for a jury there is something to do besides read.

The hardest jig saw we've had here at home was one with spools of thread covering the whole puzzle. At least some of those were different colors. All black and white would be impossible!

As long as we've got covers of Bruce Springsteen songs, how about a semi-incognito Boss plus Neil Young (Jimmy Fallon's spot-on impression) doing a cover of Willow Smith's Whip My Hair. Just too funny.

How about this jigsaw puzzle.

You could work for days to complete the puzzle only to have another puzzle to solve.

Hi all,

What a nice puzzle, Jennifer. Thanks for Winnie, mb!

No cheating, but did not know LEHI, AMOS and EAKINS!

Third doc appt. in a row today. Cannot keep eyes open. Happy anniversary to the Mainiacs, JDs and BillGs.

Lemonade--I love M. C. BEATON. Have read everything that she ever wrote. I wolf down her books when I get them! (That TV version of Hamish MacBeth was a travesty, IMBO.) Am surprised that no one else has responded to your query!

Cheers!

Did anybody also 'see' the 'skull' of the Man-on-the-moon, in the Google doodle ? It is on the extreme right hand corner, and appears when the eclipse is half-over.

I'm kinda excited. Our resident Northern Mockingbird returned today. This will be the 3rd summer-long stay if it holds up. They aren't without issues, but they can be very entertaining.

Clear Ayes- You made my day with the Springsteen/Fallon gig. It's even better if you follow it up with the "backstage" clip.

Thanks

Jeannie said...

First of all, thanks to all my blog friends here at the corner for their condolences. I had no time to attempt the puzzle as I came back to work to numerous problems and about 500 e-mails.

I am still sad and listless which usually isn't my M.O. I was actually hoping that some vendor could have pissed me off, if that makes any sense. I do know how to bitch in "business terms" and it might have taken an "angry edge" out of me.

MFFarmer, maybe with your so called "angry" issues you might understand?

MB, I did read your write up, which is really weird when you don't actually attempt the puzzle, but found all your links enjoyable. Loved seeing Pooh.

Dennis said...

Seen, thanks for that link - I'm gonna see if I can carry that puzzle in the store.

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins - helluva story there.

I agree with Jerome -- the Springsteen/Fallon clip was excellent.

kazie said...

I heard him interviewed on NPR when I was in Little Rock, and he talked about that clip and what it was like working with Springsteen. So it was neat to actually see it as well--I knew what to expect. I never watch Fallon, as it's a bit late for me usually, so I hadn't realized how many impressions he's capable of.

Jeannie said...

C.C., Dennis, I have been a part of this blog for a long time. You have really disappointed and hurt me by not acknowledging my family's loss.

Cokato/Jeannie/Lolita. Not an anon.

Chickie said...

Avg Joe, We have a Mockingbird pair nesting in a shrub next to our garage. Except for the singing in the middle of the night, we enjoy seeing the birds defending their nest, and chasing other birds away.

My husband did his Master's thesis on the Mockingbird Song--way back when, and we've raised baby mockers by hand.

We are getting dive bombed when we get too close to the nest area.

Bill G. said...

Chickie, we too raised a baby mockingbird who had fallen from the nest. I've always been curious about their beautiful songs. Do they really imitate other birds or do they just have a very varied singing style? Maybe your husband can shed some light on that for me.

Hey Jeannie, what is going on with you? Are you keeping a check-off list of everyone who said they were sympathetic? You are a grown-ass woman in your forties. Asking for recognition from people you only know from a blog is not productive. This may be a group of mostly friendly people, but they aren't your family. You're feeling bad, so spend some time talking with the parents of the young woman who passed away. They are your family, brother or sister and are the ones who need the consolation. You can help them and you'll feel better.

I remember what I wanted to say yesterday:

I love the Hamish McBeth stories! I did not see the movie and I guess I'm glad, Lemonade and Fermatprime. I haven't got into Agatha Raisin, but my daughter recommends them.Beaton does a good job of making Hamish look good even though he's kind of a goldbrick. They're a short light-hearted read, some what like the Alex McCall Smith books.

I rather liked today's puzzle. Didn't really have any trouble with it except for an idiotic misreading of Jiuliet for Juilliet. I know the French month names, too. Fortunately the perps put me straight! I blame it all on age-onset dislexia!
