Happy Birthday to dear Creature! Her kindness & warmth shine through in each of her comments here on the blog. Creature has been through some difficult times since she lost her husband 2 years ago today. She doesn't post much these days, but she still reads us every day and cares very much about this blog and our regulars. Dave, please work extra hard and find the sweetest cake for our special Creature.

(Since today's keywords were all synonyms, They're all woven into one (badly disjointed) story. I think you'll recognize the reindeer held over from yesterday.)
I once had a FOREIGN POLICY
My insurance agent sold it to me.
It paid my wife double
If I got into trouble
While wandering across the sea!
So off to the Northlands I sails,
Where I sampled Scandinavian ales.
I checked out the hookers:
Found most were great lookers,
But some were some mighty STRANGE TAILS!
(sic)
If you want an example, I'll answer,
There was one who on stage was a prancer.
She had hooves, 'stead of feet,
Though the antlers were neat,
Now that was an EXOTIC DANCER!
At last, my travels were over,
Till bills nearly wrecked my composure.
While I'd been 'cross the waters,
To the bank we'd become squatters.
They launched A LIEN INVASION foreclosure!
My adventure may sound FOREIGN and odd;
This tale of STRANGE strands that I've trod.
But locations EXOTIC,
Though unorthodoxic,
Were less ALIEN than some on home sod!
Morning, all (and Happy Birthday Creature, wherever you are)!
Mostly smooth solve today. Struggled a bit in exactly two spots. First, I've never heard of LINE SCORE before, so I needed every perp to confirm it. Second, I was convinced that 41D could only be CARBONATE (which didn't fit) since I thought AERATE only involved air. Turns out that AERATE can also refer to carbon dioxide. Live and learn...

Good morning Argyle, C.C. et al.
Happy birthday Creature! I hope you spend it doing something special for yourself!!

I finished the puzzle and didn't even think about the theme until I realized it was missing a "unifier" entry. So I went back and looked at the four theme entries, and whacked myself on the head with the V8 can because it was right there in plain sight!
I really enjoyed the clue for EXOTIC DANCER, "Entertainer with many fans?" Cute!
I didn't know the term LINE SCORE, but it filled with perps. Oh, so this is what they were talking about? Maybe I'll remember it next time…
Have a great day, everyone!
Good Morning, Argyle and friends. I though this was a tad challenging for a Tuesday. I realized early that the theme was Alien and Foreign, but had no idea who Nick Fury was, so figured out the STRANGE part but the TALES was slow in coming.
Although I saw and enjoyed The Princess Bride, I had to Google CARY ELWES name. I don't think I have ever seen him in anything else.
Happy Birthday, Creature! I know this must be a bittersweet day for you. We miss you and wish you all the best.

Greetings!
Thanks so much, David and Argyle.
Only hangup was LINE SCORE, requiring several perps.
Can't aeem to fall asleep.
A very happy birthday to you, Creature!!
Cheers!
I must have been on David's wave length as this one was a fairly easy swim. Easily Tuesday difficulty and easier than yesterday's puzzle. As a base ball coach you keep a line score. It is useful when you want to see when the runs were scored. It is similar to the box score which provides more information When I was younger the newspapers used to print only the line scores then they were replaced by the box scores as I got older now you will see a line score for smaller games (i.e. youth games or interschoolastic.)
Owen: loved the limericks today.
STRANGE TALES was a gimme. Back in the mid-sixties STRANGE TALES starred Dr. Strange and Nick Fury, Tales to Astonish starred Ant Man and the Hulk, Tales of Suspense starred Captain America and Iron Man and Journey into Mystery starred Thor. They sold so well that Dr. Strange, Nick Fury, the Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man all got their own titles.
Knowing all this I was able to complete this Tuesday puzzle with ease.
If I want to freak students out I can tell them I am an alien and then, as proof, show them my Alien Registration Card. Of course, I am an 外國人 and not a 外星人. :)
Happy birthday Creature. I hope you have some fun things planned to celebrate the day.
Good morning!
Nothing too tough about this one. Started to enter FOREIGN affairs, but ran out of room.
I remember line scores from my radio days. UPI used to issue line scores via teletype as the games were underway. That's where I learned that SD is not South Dakota.
Argyle, be honest, how long did it take you to type that CCCP translation? (Or did you find it somewhere and cut and paste it?)
I remember Cary Elwes as the upstart meteorologist who got blown away (literally) in Twister.
Happy birthday, Creature, if you're tuned in today.
Happy Birthday, Creature. May it be a good day!
My parents owned a CIERA. My son's favorite place to deploy (before the wars) was Diego Garcia, an ATOLL with a military base in the Indian Ocean. My parents owned a MALT shop when I was young. my D-I-L lived under CCCP rule (Lithuania)until she was 16--we have heard stories that we find fascinating. She describes how bad it was.
I found this to be a fairly difficult Tuesday puzzle for me. I forgot to look for a theme, so had to rely on Argyle. Thanks again, Argyle, for the Link under the white spaces.
Time to get to granddaughters.
Have a good day, everyone,
Montana
Fun run for a Tuesday.
@Hatoolah -- Cary Elwes most recent role of note is as recurring guest star: the elusive international art thief, Pierre Despereaux on the TV show, "Psych".
Big crossover of fans of "Princess Bride" and "Psych"-- so he plays the role with amused flair.
Good morning everyone.
Happy Birthday, Creature.
Got all the way through, looked for what the theme might be, and had to read Argyle's write-up to get an inkling. I felt the connection among the theme words was amorphous.
Unknowns like CARY ELWES, and spelling head-scratchers like TIPPI, FEIN, and CIERA were easily perped. BH helped me with LAMÉ.
Have a good day.
Haven't done the puzzle yet, but I could help noticing it is Creatures Birthday while I was on my way to the "older posts" link to view yesterdays late nite posts...
Hmm, this is going to be difficult.
I thought I had the perfect cake, but it turns out I posted it last year!
No....
Uh, Uh...
Oh Bother! (this may take a while...)
I'll be back!
Hi Y'all! A good Tuesday puzzle without too many problems for me. Thanks, David. Great expo, Argyle, you've outdone yourself in the tunes links yesterday and today. Three I had never heard but really enjoyed as well as a couple I had heard and enjoyed again.
I started strong knowing the #1 across & down and kept pluggin' away until done. I looked for a theme but didn't get it until Argyle turned on the light.
Had no idea about Westley. I watched that with my kids way back when it first came out. Has to be 20 to 30 years ago now.
Happy birthday, Creature! Buy yourself a lovely gift from the person who knows best what you want. Hope things are going tolerably.
happy Birthday to Creature today! It's also our D-I-L's birthday and so we called her this morning too.
Not too much to comment on today. The Billy Joel clip seemed a bit off key and not nearly as good as it sounds on our CD--but a good memory anyway.
Have a lovely Tuesday everyone!
Happy Birthday, Creature!
Good Morning:
I thought this had a bit of a bite for a Tuesday. Got the theme right after filling in foreign and then exotic. Finished w/o help but needed some perps. Thanks, David, and Argyle.
Owen: great verses today!
Happy Birthday, Creature, bittersweet though it may be.
Happy Tuesday.
happy birthday, Creature! (STRANGE name for such a lovely person.)
Got ACTA thanks to perps.
My MIL is an EDIE.
I enjoyed Rex Stout's NERO Wolfe stories, and got inspired to try my hand at keeping an orchid alive. Now I know why he had a room dedicated to the OHSO beautiful things; mine didn't like life in the sunroom. It died one weekend when we were gone and the AC wasn't on....
Greetings and happy day to all!
Happy birthday to you, Creature. I miss your posts and hope you are coping well. Do something fun today.
This puzzle was as clear as SARAN wrap, thank you, David Poole. My pencil almost quite literally flew across the grid but stumbled on FOREIGN (AFFAIRS)until POLICY was revealed.
I've not heard of STRANGE TALES but the perps did their job and except for GLEAN where I had AMASS the rest fell in place.
TIPPI crossing TIP IN was fun to see and of course, ANISE, brings licorice to mind. I love licorice!
You all have a wonderful day! Carpet cleaning time.
Still working on it...
Still working on it...
Almost there....
Argyle: Another great write-up & links. Thank you!
Now I know Bill G. wrote in CARY ELWES quickly. He has mentioned the movie "The Princess Bride" is one of his favorites.
MOI? ... I only needed 9 perps to get him.
My fave today (of course) was ALES, I even enjoy them before-and-after Happy Hour.
Happy Birthday to my favorite Creature.
The "first toast" at Sunset is to YOU!!!
Cheers!!!
Musings (while subbing again today!)
- This man who did a very infamous thing 50 years ago this week hired lots of EXOTIC DANCERS
-Do girls do better at schools where there are NO MEN
-It looks like SCRAP IRON but American Restoration can fix it
-I get a feeling of UNEASE at 6:30 am on school days wondering whether I am going to get a call to sub or not. Working is fun but sleeping in is OH SO nice too.
-Raspberry MALT for me please
-I guess CARY _ _ _ _ _ isn’t CARY GRANT ;-)
-I lived through and loved Beatle MANIA, yeah, yeah, yeah!
-Most famous World Series LINE SCORE. I know there are at least 10 of you who can name the pitcher instantly!
-Amazing population DENSITY concept
-The first satellite, dog, man and woman in space wore the letters CCCP. First landing on the moon? USA, USA, USA…
-I had to RE OIL our pocket door. Gotta love WD-40!
-Joke from a sophomore yesterday, “Why couldn’t NOAH fish off the Ark?” “He only had two worms!”
-HBD, Creature!
I finished the puzzle late last night but it took a second look to notice the theme.
Happy birthday Mary Lou (Creature)! Here's a birthday song especially for you, one of my favorites. Hello Mary Lou Geez, they don't write/sing/play 'em like this anymore.
Tin: Right you are. Princess Bride was an instant classic so far as I'm concerned. So many memorable scenes and lines.
Hello Puzzlers -
Uncomplicated puzzle today. WBS about needing a bunch of perps to suss Line Score. Just not into sports.
I just love Princess Bride for its quirky humor, offbeat characters, and fun storyline. I can't imagine a better cast.
Montana from yesterday - beautiful photos! I took note that the Massachusetts one came from Hatfield, just a few miles away.
HBTY Creature.
Cheers All
Good morning all. I've been awol since DW and I were out visiting our son in Palo Alto over a long weekend. His twin brother flew in from Austin, so we had a good time. Very action packed, so there was no time to try and meet anyone from the Coven, unfortunately. We saw Alcatraz, the Cable Car museum, Muir Woods, ate at Fish in Sausalito and the best little place in Palo Alto and even went to Fitzgerald tide pool for a rare low tide. Between them all, I've not walked that far or seen that much change of grade in a long, long time, but I survived. A good time was had by all and it was enjoyable seeing Juan and Amahl.
I did get the puzzle in the Mercury on Saturday, but Sunday only had the NYT. Did it, but it was like a mouth full of feathers. Did it online yesterday, but can't say I like that method. Back home today to the pencil and paper, and enjoyed it a lot.
Husker: Your "LINE SCORE" link didn't work for me.
(Hondo & I are probably hoping you meant to show the one from the NY Yankee Don Larsen Perfect-Game from the 1956 World Series).
Bill G. Geez, you would think I would (could) have remembered CARY ELWES just from your comments.
Nope! I drew a complete blank. **it happens.
Oops, forgot to say:
A very happy birthday to Creature!!
Still working on it...
CED. You're a genius.
You've done very well so far.
Happy Birthday Creature.
Hope things are going well for you. You've are being missed. Heartfelt best wishes and prayers, and hope that things are good at your end. Having not been in your position before, I can offer you no advice. Keep faith in God, and faith in yourself, and maintain a good optimistic attitude on life.
Avg Joe @ 11:27 - Was the puzzle by Julian Lim? That was the one in my paper and I found it very dull and disappointing, which, for me, is usually the case with the Sunday Times puzzles of recent months.
Tin @ 11:28 - You forgot this long time Yankee fan! )-:
The only trouble I had was that I would not give up on ENROLL until the very end when enough letters appeared to give ENLIST.
Still working on it...
Aaarrggh. I almost nailed this challenging puzzle except for one letter: had FOREIGN POLICE instead of FOREIGN POLICY. That explains why the name of the Westley person (never heard of him) was so weird. But at least I remembered to change EROTIC dancer to EXOTIC dancer in time.
Anyway, fun puzzle, David, and great write-up with cool images, Argyle. And inspired limericks today, Owen.
Have a wonderful, wonderful birthday, Creature.
And have a great Tuesday, everybody!
HG,
Line score link a no go in Ct. If it was the '56 game, it would be Mr Larsen. If it was game 7 from 1960 series it would be (sob) Mr Terry.
The only WS match up I won't look forward to is Giants/Yankees. Can't honestly say who I would favor.
Irish Miss, no, it was by Alan Orschwang and the theme was Bye-Lines.
Still working on it...
Avg Joe - Okay. Your paper is a week behind; you'll get the Lim puzzle this coming Sunday. Let me know your thoughts on it. Bye Lines was too predictable.
Still working on it..
Fairies are a kind of creature, aren't they?
First, a very happy birthday to Creature who has been a friend an inspiration to us all at the corner. And many more. The Corner has been blessed with so many strong women commenting over the years; to Creature all of you out there, thanks.
An enjoyable puzzle with few slowdowns, could not recall how to spell CARY ELWES, but the actor was familiar, as he also was wonderful in Mel Brooks' Robin Hood, Men in Tights which also had Richard LEWIS and crossword favorite Roger REES.
Martin, impressive knowledge of the early years of Marvel comics; I had a small comic book store inside a drug store, in the 70s, along with a collection. Both are long gone.
Thanks Argyle.
Still working on it...
CED are we looking for Creatures or monsters and other fairy tale figures.?
I thought a creature, was a god given creation, a natural good- for- something insect of sorts.
When I try to google it , all I get is monstrosities.
( Do not look if you are easily scared).
Link THE CREATURE
-Over the river and through the corn fields and it’s home from subbing I am.
-Most famous line score in World Series. Hope this works. The original link worked for me.
-Lemon, I am not a Stan Lee devotee and so I did know he had a history of film cameos. He was a hoot on TBBT.
Curious Creature @ 3:29
Hmm, maybe your right, I could be going about this all wrong...
But I have all these Pics saved up,,,
(I was going to keep it up all day...)
I was trying to figure out a way to include this cake...
But, You are absolutely right, the perfect Birthday Cake for Creature, has nothing to do with the word creature...
So does Creature hold the record for most birthday cakes in one day? :)
Gary and others, my brain is dead, so I cannot recall what Stan Lee used to call his readers, but you have seen him if you have seen Spiderman, The Avengers, Ironman, Thor, Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men; what am I doing, here is the LINK .
You see his first was on the Hulk TV show with Lou Ferrigno (before CG) and then in the Hulk movie, he is with Ferrigno. Lots of inside funny stuff.
Little difficult for me. Finally finished just now not before looking up some answers. Pulp Comic was like WHAT the hay??
Hello everybody, and happy birthday, creature! I'm with Argyle all the way about this puzzle, especially regarding it having good meaty fill. We have ALICIA, ARETHA, EDIE, NADIA, ALEXA, and TIPPI, fine DAMEs all. MEDEA, well, she was wronged, and we all know Hell hath no fury...
A shameless plug for my employer and the work I am involved in, all presented by my @#$&! boss. If you have an hour to spare, get your popcorn and beverage of your choice and have a look.
Best wishes to you all.
I'm late to the blog today. Everything has already been said about the puzzle that I would have commented on.
I wanted to wish Creature a Very Happy Birthday and many, many more to come.
The puzzle was a bit harder for me than the usual Tues. puzzle. ActA,and Ciera were unknown, as was Strange Tales, so I looked those up. Other than that I finished the rest on my own. It took me a bit longer than usual.
Medea was an aunt's name and I always can remember most of the fills for the name. It was lovely to see her here today.
Have a great day everyone.
Husker 10:57 - that claim about population density sounds valid to me. I wish that humankind would slow it down a bunch.
Jayce:
Well I watched almost 2 minutes before I became bored by your boss.
(Maybe he should work in the sleep deprivation field).
I'm sure Earthquake prediction is interesting and necessary where you live.
... I'm willing to just "take-my-chances" here in the Tampa Bay area ...
C.E.D.
I was thinking more in the lines of James Herriot's book
All creatures, great and small ..
I very much enjoyed your cakes ... You should go into the custom cake decorating business.
All it takes is some marzipan, some sugar dough and lots of food coloring ;-). And some talent.
And a few lessons on youtube ... ;-D
Lemon, I had no idea Stan Lee did so many cameo's, that was great, he's a regular Alfred Hitchcock!
Don't forget TBBT!
Oh nuts, I was so busy today, I forgot to comment on the puzzle...
Happy Birthday Creature ! We do miss you.
I'll step up to the microphone and admit to a Tuesday fail. Adjacent PI--S, A-IC--, CARY--WES, and E-O, as well as crossing -A-E, ---RA and STRANGE---ES all left me in a quandary. 8 letters missing, but it may as well have been 50.
Thanks for 'splaining it Argyle. Now that I read the answers, I had no chance on Picts, Cary Elwes, Emo, Strange Tales, and Ciera. Could have got ALICIA with a few more perps.
Oh well.
Abejo said yesterday he was going to the dentist. We haven't heard from him since. Coincidence ?
This is for you Creature, from all of us who miss you and think of you often.Hope you had a wonderful day.
CD, it was so sweet of you to make enough cakes for us all to celebrate with Creature.
Had a slow start this morning and took awhile to get a foot hold at the top... the middle and bottom were smooth.
Enjoyed the Alexa Rae Joel clip and listened to others.
Jayce, that looks like VERY interesting work.Hope you are enjoying it.
Owen, you aced it again!
G'Eve all!
TDNF - Had to lookup CARY__LW_S to finish off. Otherwise WEES.
Favs: SNAFU - I just love that acronym :-) and ANISE. Christmas is coming and it's time to build pizelles!
Thanks for the writeup Argyle. I was so frustrated with myself @11d, I forgot to look for the theme.
Happy Birthday Creature! If you get a second watch JD's link. It is touching in both senses of the word.
CED - Hilarious! I loved all the cakes. The final one is perfect.
Bill G. I actually saw TBBT with Stan Lee. Funny stuff.
Welcome back Ave. Joe!
Cheers, -T
Jayce, I hope the research being done by you and your boss bears fruit. I'd like a little warning before my windows start rattling again.
JD, I enjoyed your HUGS video. Good stuff!
Jayce, I was fascinated by your video. The man made noise issue was an eye opener. Who knew how noisy BART or even a tractor could be?
The events in Illinois on this past Sunday made this even more chilling for me. Your boss suggested that your work may someday rival the satellite imagery(hurricane) or Doppler radar(tornado) warning systems. That would be life changing!
On Sunday we were glued to our tv's (yes windy, tv's can save your life!) as our local meteorologists showed us very detailed images of Doppler radar, using red for outflow and blue for inflow, indicating rotation. Then combined with storm direction and Google Earth, showed us what neighborhoods the spinning winds were approaching. Evidence later that day showed they were 100% dead balls accurate and save hundreds of lives by giving several minutes of real-time warning
Maybe someday your hard work will pay off and your grandchildren will say "my grandpa worked on that project!"
JD:
I love that HUGS video you posted for Creature and hope she sees it.
I just came across this on YouTube and I found myself laughing out loud. If you haven't seen it twice already, you may have the same reaction. Some of the best of the Big Bang Theory.
{weespoop}
Dave,
Thanks for the sweet cakes for Creature! You're the best.
nice picture, by the way.
Good Wednesday morning, folks. Thank you, David Poole, for a swell puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for the swell review.
Well, got through this easily yesterday. However, I was not home much to go to the blog and post. Therefore, I am posting now.
The theme seemed to deal with STRANGE, ALIEN, etc. So that worked.
Got MEDEA with perps. ALICIA appeared with a wag after I had a few letters. Never heard of her.
Liked NOAH, the Ark helmsman.
Did not know CARY ELWES either. Perps and wags.
Happy birthday, Creature. Miss you on the blog.
TTP, yes I went to the dentist Monday. Had an old crown removed, a temporary one installed, and I get my new one in three weeks.
See you later today after I get Wednesday's puzzle done.
Abejo
(uthollop)
JD- wow! My eyes are all watery from the free hugs, so I went back and hugged each of you again. You can't imagine…
My tummy aches from Dave's cakes- super icing finger lickin' good.Hope everyone got a big piece!
I'm definitely full, but the last one took my heart.
Thanks, Dave, for the gallant effort. I'll never forget.
Love to my dear friends. Nothing came near it.Wish we could have a big meeting before it would be too late to stay up all night. Maybe its too late but I'd sure give it a try.
