Good morning!

Whoosh. That was the sound of the theme going over my head this morning. I never read the complete reveal clue. In fact, I never read any part of that clue; ISH was already filled in. No Wite-Out required today. Thanx, to our dynamic Minnesota duo. Chuckled at your Nixon comment, Boomer.

OH YES I CAN: I was a stubborn kid. "You can't do that!" "Watch me." DW thinks I'm still stubborn. I call it well-reasoned.

SUPER PACS: Beto O'Rourke also accepted no money from PACS or corporations. He ran his entire campaign on individual contributions...and almost won. We'll hear from him again.

Happy birthday, JD!

Thank you CC and Boomer.
Enjoyable with some unknowns and WAGS.
Did not know RENNER , but guessed right at the double N in MICKEY FINN.
Did not know DREDD and and missed CDROM .
Thought only of jewelry at Jewel box item so FIW in the end .
Thanks OwenKL for more of your ever entertaining offerings.

The Brady Bunch seems to be comming back to life again. Maybe the Chiefs can do it this year.

I admire what the Pats have accomplished , don’t have to like them in order to appreciate the stats.

Here’s hoping y’all have a good day.

Hi Y'all! Great Monday fare, C.C.! Good giggles to start the week, Boomer!

I didn't get the theme until all was filled. Very clever.

Some meaty fills for a Monday. SIMiLE filled itself and I didn't see it until coming here. Good thing. I would have been in the dark with the clue.

POPS: called my Irish grandfather grandPOP. He was a Corker.

OCTO-pus: clever clue which I didn't get until I saw it here. Duh!

DNK: RENNER, PHO

My son is one of the gov. employees doing without a paycheck. Seems concerned about not getting important work done for an upcoming aviation safety presentation. His wife teaches at a private school.

HBD to JD.

OKL, I think your first limerick today is one of your best ever.

It is a treat to start the day with C.C/Boomer words. ISH is an odd suffix. A Rabbi friend had a sermon about being proud to a Jew and not to be satisfied to be Jewish.

Both of my sons call me POPS
at times.

Thank you, Doug and Zhouqin, have a great week all.

FLN: Wilbur Charles, since I'm always thrilled to hear some guy loves me, I hesitate to say you had the wrong woman who "should not do sports commentary". I would never comment on football especially. Never watch it except I did see some thrilling video outtakes of Mahomes raising Chief's fan's spirits.

FIR, but erased "it is I" for IT'S ME and SAMaurI for SAMURAI. Bad spellers of the world UNTIE! And I had one of the damned joltwagons. Only unknowns were the two actors; perps to the rescue.

CSO to YellowRocks' Alan. Hope he is getting back in kilter.

FLN, WC I laughed 'til I cried thinking that golfers can't cheat. I have only played with one group that didn't condone cheating, and that was when I subbed in a league in Thousand Oaks, CA some 25 years ago. In that group every shot was played into the hole - not even a 1" tap-in was a gimmie. Everyone else I've played with think gimmies make the game more fun and speed up play. But both players are cheating - the one saying "that's good, Jinx" and me when I pick it up. (Different rules apply to team games, of course, but I rarely play those.)

FLN, Picard I know that I can get all types of food in Norfolk. It truly an international city, mainly because of our maritime influence. I've liked Asian food whenever I've been compelled to go with a group (except sushi - not for me), but for whatever reason I just don't opt for it when DW and I go out by ourselves.

Thanks for the Monday treat, CC. My favorite was "emphatic type" for ITAL. And thanks to Boomer for the fun Monday review. Good to hear your bowling is coming back into shape.

Did not know DREDD for 6D. Perps.

Same for ROID at 32D. Maybe cause I am not a body builder.

Hi all, I enjoy working the puzzle and then coming here to see your comments. But I have a question. I do this crossword on line on the LA Times site for free. Is there someplace the actual theme of the puzzle is written out? If it's on line, I'm not seeing it (or missing it - entirely possible!) Today is a good example. I did pretty well with only a couple of stumbles, but I couldn't figure out the theme... and I don't see "ISH" anywhere on my screen. Your thoughts? Thanks so much...

desper-otto said...

Anon@9:06, you'll see ISH at 52d in your puz. Weekday puzzles don't have an official title. The titles/themes you see here were created by the blogger of the day.

Today's theme reminds me of the old multicultural story: First you're Russian, then European. And finally, you're Finnish.

Good Morning:

A nice, easy start to the week with a cleverly hidden theme, no surprise in a CC puzzle. No w/os or unknowns, fairly typical on Mondays. I liked the Super Pacs ~ Career Pol crossing. How apropos. Nice CSO, again, to Alan.

Thanks, CC and Boomer, for entertaining and enlightening us. Boomer, you are a funny man!

Happy Birthday, JD, hope your day is special. 🎂🎈🎉🎁🍾

I'm off to do some errands. It's very cold here so I won't be dilly dallying!

Good Morning.

I heard the same Woosh as D-O! However, today was a fun run for me after Friday, Saturday and Sunday DNFs I admit to lacking focus this weekend. Lots going on, but okay.

I was pleased to see another Monday with our Dynamic Duo. Thanks, C.C. and Boomer. ORION reminded me of early morning winter walks when I had my dog. I loved watching ORION slink along the dark sky. I was so much easier to spot the constellations with fewer lights. Other than the Ursas, Cassiopeia was the first constellation I ever spotted as a kid. I wonder if she has enough vowels to show up here.

Have a very fine day today.

Good morning. Thank you C.C. and thank you Boomer. Happy Birthday JD !

After MEMORY SPAN and DAPPER DAN, I tried to think of something that would tie them together. Nothing. Then after CAREER POL, I thought something with the Ps. Then MICKEY FINN came along. Good thing there was a clear reveal.

Like evacuations / excavations yesterday I read tried before tied today.

There was a video on the morning news showing an early teenager or preteen trying to use a rotary phone. Hilarious. There are many online, but I couldn't find the one that was on the news. Did find this one: KIDS REACT TO ROTARY PHONES

Desper-otto, FLN, thanks for the FOB explanation in reference to Return of the Magi.

Boomer, nice scores, especially since you said your traveling league was going to be at a tougher house. You must be starting to get back in stride. The only thing worse than leaving a 10 pin standing in the first place is to see it standing after the second ball. Kudos on getting all but one.

I'm still missing a lot of 10 pins, even with the new straight ball. Thought I had it down pat, starting at the far left, then throwing a board or two inside the third arrow. Going to have to rethink that approach and maybe not move so far left. I need to practice a game or two just rolling the new ball. I have a couple of tickets for free games that I need to use before the expiration date.

No bowling for me last Thursday night or this coming Thursday. The other "every-other-week" bowler is trying to catch up on missed weeks so we have an equal number of weeks. Unless something comes up, no league bowling for me until the 24th.

Well, I was already looking forward to a Monday Boomer write-up, when I saw it was also a C.C. puzzle! Woohoo! Mondays don't get better than this. Then the first word ROSA popped right up, of course, and then IRIS and OPEC and so on. But things got a little crunchy further down and I actually started to worry that I might not have a perfect finish. But thank goodness I got HYPE and that gave me two unknowns, PHO and NSYNC. I also worried about SAL but the perps were all solid. Finally figured out it had to refer to SALT--is that right? And then came the fun reveal at the bottom and all those languages just popped up and made sense. Very clever puzzle, C.C. and lots of fun. And glad you're doing better, Boomer.

Liked your poems, Owen.

Happy birthday, JD--and a lovely picture!

A weird thing happened with my computer Inbox last night: suddenly all the messages were out of order, date-wise, with 2016 and 2017 mixing up with 2018 and 2019--and no current messages near the bottom. Then I noticed that all the items in the Subject column were in alphabetical order. Strange, strange. Thank goodness I have a wonderful tech supporter who this morning got me my Inbox back in its usual order. Phew, a great relief.

Have a good week, everybody!

Note on ISH.

The German equivalent is ISCH, The German equivalent for a country adjective/nationality is much more likely to tack on the ISCH suffix than some other ending. Examples:

French - -Französisch
Russian - - Russisch
Italian - - Italienisch
Norse - - Nordisch
Norwegian - - Norwegisch
Spanish - - Spanisch
Chinese - - Chinesisch.

CanadianEh! said...

Marvelous Monday. Thanks for the fun C.C. and Boomer.
Some crunch today but I got the theme and noted all those languages. We also had NORSE to go with DANISH and FINNISH, and Sal to go with SPANISH.
I was tempted to enter ISH for 30A "Nowhere close" but it was needed for 62D.

DREDD and RENNER required perps.
I smiled at CD ROM for "Jewel box item".
STA or STN - depends on the constructor.

51A and Boomer's comment on 61D "Budgetary excess: FAT. I am sure those poor federal workers do not have this problem this month." reminded me of this Canadian response.

I was slowed only by the nexus of 5A/D. Didn't know GoPro, so couldn't automatically fill in the "c" for CAMERA, and C.C. had me fooled with the "Jewel box" misdirection.
But I got it in time, so my enjoyment was complete.

I needed a lift today, as we get ready in SoCal for a week of heavy rain. Already the accumulating backyard waters are creeping up to our backdoor. (The drains are partly clogged and provide only slow seepage.)
My wife dreads it; thinks one day it will flood into our house. I assure her it will have to flow down our alley, which is lower than our backdoor, before it can come into the den.
Privately, I am just not sure. Shh.

Lucina, regarding the "peel/peal" spelling from last night, please know that by quoting you I was in no way mocking you. I used your words because I liked your turn of phrase. Echoing what another person said is one way I express a complement. In fact, I didn't even notice the spelling of peel when I copied and pasted your words.

Shortly after I posted this morning, my cleaning lady arrived and informed me that a 21 year old female had been found murdered in a house about a mile from me. I drove past the house on my way to the market and there were two Evidence Technician vans and one patrol car out front and crime scene tape all over the area. No definitive details yet but the police have a "person of interest" who is presently hospitalized with unspecified wounds. He's being referred to as a parolee but no other information or identification was given. The house in question is two doors away from a Catholic Church and school. What a world this has become.

Very nice Monday C.C. puzzle and to have Boomer tiptoe us through the grid was a bonus.

The clues were perfect for today. Many of the down words were filled in before I even got to the clues: SCHLEPS, HYPE and SAL were the only ones that slowed me down, but not for long when they got filled in by perps.

CanadianEH: It's nice that the Canadian ATC personnel sent the pizzas to their counterparts in the US. It shows that borders don't have to be contentious.

Remember when PDA stood for Personal Digital Assistant like the Palm Pilot and Blackberry. Now everyone lives on their IPhones, Samsungs, etc. I use my IPhone and IPad a lot, but I have a Palm Pilot that I still use for some things that the new generation of phones don't do well.

Have a great day everyone.

Anon-PVX @ 2:49. You're correct -- the way the NFL is set up now is that you have to slog through all the second- or third-rate teams clogging up the system, until finally the "no-accounts" are out of the way,* and some real football gets played. The trouble is that that is usually only around the time the play-offs start.

* I'm thinking of the local teams that augured in this year, the 49ers and the Raiders, but there are some other clunkers you may disfavor more.

Good afternoon all,
Great puzzle today with fun follow-up with Boomer's humor. C.C., I am always amazed at your knowledge of vocabulary. Had to laugh at schleps, not a word we use very often. Liked it!

Didn't get why sal was OK to shorten for cantina condiment. I'm rusty. Roid also threw me , but perps are always my friend, even on Mondays.

Thanks to so many of you that sent me birthday wishes. Had a lovely 75th celebration with my family, and yes, those little guys keep growing. Cant seem to stop that from happening, and am enjoying every day with them.
@ CE Dave, thanks for dessert!
@ Tinbeni, will think of you at sunset..thanks

Picard, your pictures of Hearst Castle are lovely and brought back memories of our early visits. When we went there was water in the pool, and we paid one price to see the entire estate. FACT. Brady wins games. QED Brady is good. OPINION: I don’t like him. A big difference.

On another level, Foles lost the game. Had lots of bad throws. But I LIKE him.

Forgive me if I didn’t make this clear.

Hi All!

Thanks C.C. & Boomer for another Magic Monday Minnesota twofer. I enjoyed the hidden theme and the subsequent witty expo.

WOs: SIMILy & CARrER. Jinx, we really should form a klub... UNTIE!
ESPs: ALAN, RENNER
Fav: Who doesn't think of Belushi @SAMURAI? [4:12 ++Richard Pryor].

Is that three days in a row NERD?

{A, A}

Misty - it sounds like you changed your sort-selector. What's your email client? Outlook?

OMK - DR: taking the blocking-block as a dash... I'm thinking of you and Misty for days not getting your LAT delivered: Yous were PAPER-SORE...

Oc4 - I too thought of my Palm IIIx (had a modem and foldable keyboard (like Picard's) for it too!) & Treo 650 at PDA. Great devices for the day.

C, Eh! - Think Americans would send Canada pizza if your Government shut down? Oh, wait, that's just US. :-)

BillO - sad that some people just don't have a sense of humour. Thanks for sharing the PHO story. LOL!

Happy Birthday JD!

Cheers, -T

Swamp, I recall you saying (opining) that you were a Rivers fan. That's fine. I think I was responding to something said about Brady's performance.

It was terrific.

JD:
SAL is actually salt in Spanish. I meant to comment on that in my post but forgot.

Picard:
My sister and I went on a road trip up the 101 many years ago and stopped at Hearst Castle. We were duly amazed with it and the many antiques in every room and hallway.

Thank you, Anonymous T, for carrying on the DR work even when there are no true diagonals!
On behalf of Misty and myself, I thank you for your sympathy for our newspaper drought.
