Took me a little over 5.5 minutes to taste victory on this puzzle.
Good morning!
There was AMPLE time for a DNF this morning. Should'a been AMPLY. REE didn't look great, but couldn't figure out what that third character should be. Bzzzzzzt! As usual, d-o failed to read the "reveal" clue, and totally missed the theme. [Sigh] Still, I thought the puz was pretty good. Thanx, Freddie and Hahtoolah. ("Titanic" and "Witness Protection" were great.)
FIW. Hand up for missing AMPLe x REe. But I waited for I WiN / I WON, so I got that goin' for me. REY was my only unknown, and american indians was my only erasure. NATIVE AMERICANS is what I meant to write, of course. Merely a sip of the pen. I'm so PC that I cringed when I admitted that the WHITE chess side always gets to move first.
Anyone know why today's cars have TACHs? In the old days you could blow up the 390 cid engine in your Mustang GT if you missed a gear during a speed shift, but now you can put your automatic tranny in neutral and floor the gas, and the computer will prevent you from overrevving the engine.

If you haven't heard ENYA lately you must not watch much TV, which is unAMERICAN. Whenever the brat won't cooperate at meal time, ENYA sings "Who Can Say" and Kraft mac & cheese saves the day. Less annoying that Limu the Emu, but more annoying than the blonde dog and doggie daddy (at least IMO).
Jinx, just give the blonde dog/doggie daddy a little more time. It'll grate.
MACHO reminded me of an embarrassing moment of my ute. It involved the restrooms at a seafood restaurant. I stood confused before the two doors, one with the image of a seagull, and the other with the image of a buoy. I had to go out to the "greeter" to find out which door I should use. Guess I was thinking visually rather than aurally.
Me too, DO and Jinx. I wondered about AMPLe and REe, thinking it could be a Y instead of E. Unfortunately I had forgotten how the name was spelled because "with room to spare" worked both ways, IMHO. So I guessed wrong.
It was not a beautiful grid like yesterday anyway because I had a WO first thing: MAnly/MACHO. Perps fixed that quickly along with my TACH and TESLA crossing. (MACH always comes to mind first, unfortunately.) While proofreading I changed HoHo to HAHA. I did get the theme but only after the reveal. But I am not complaining, Freddie. It was a fine Tuesday puzzle and it didn't drive me CRAZY.

Liked the puzzle until the amply/ray crossing. Not into star wars so I had no idea. Could have gone either way e or y. I chose e. Ample seemed logical. I find it really annoying that you can finish a entire puzzle only to be tripped up by one letter. Oh well. There's tomorrow.

Liked the puzzle and liked the theme. As DW will tell you, I'm never at a loss for words. But in this case I got a horseshoe, falling into them same TRAP of AMPLE and REE that seems to have snared so many Cornerites today. I've not seen "The Last Jedi", but REY has already joined the ranks of CWD staples and a proofread might have salvaged an FIR. But ALAS, ALACK, no use BELLYACHING over a spilt letter.
Too many great cartoons to even decide, but I guess I'd go with the one 60A, as my TONGUE was TIED before I got through the first iteration, slowly.
16A was a close second and I've already saved the 'AUSSIE "GENTLEMAN"' toon for future reference. I'm sure the CORNER blogs are read avidly by constructors all over the world, and I predict we'll start seeing some of those phrases POPPING UP in puzzles within 6 months.
Oh, and I loved the music, especially the SIMON and GARFUNKEL clip.

Thank you Freddie Cheng for a very pleasing puzzle, and Hah2lah for a fun filled imaginative review. I had a good time, and it was Tuesday, easy. I guessed ReY because the name sounded more likely, had spanish/portugese connotations.
Thanks to your cartoons, and the Anon (at 8:11 am) 's comment, I looked up and read up on, Bizarro and Don Piraro on Wiki, and learnt a lot. We often take cartoons for granted ---- there is a human being behind all of them,..... who thought it up, and drew them .....
Hah2lah, further to your Quote of the Day .... may I opine, that humans have an innate need for happiness, and that it is inextricably linked with expectations. In my childhood, my mother knitted and wove, for me, a black wool gollywog, with black hair and white and red eyes and a bulbous mouth ... that was the love of my life, and made me soo happy and joyful, whenever I played with it. It would instantly cheer me on, whenever I was sad or disappointed ... Today, that doll or those type of dolls are considered non-PC, and are rarely seen ... nor books like Noddy the Golliwog, by Enid Blyton. They are banned, even in England.
Last Xmas, I gave my eldest grandson, a new Iphone for his present. He was blah .... maybe kids expect something more nowadays ... like an electric scooter, perhaps. Too much happiness, raises Expectations, and dilutes the effect. Like food, there is only so much happiness, one can have in ones life .... you should be able to get up from the dinner table, when you're only half full ...

Nice fun CW, thanx FC, lots of fun clues. Reading Susan’s outstanding write-up, I learned AWOL stands for Absent WithOut Leave; I always thought it stood for Absent Without Official Leave. Hmmm. Whenever I see EVIAN I think of what it spells backward: naive. People willing to spend big bucks for a bottle of water! I have a very good water filter under my sink and all water going to the instant-hot, the two refrigerator ice-makers, and the spout fir water used for cooking runs through that filter. It tastes perfect! A change of filters once every two years is so for <$30 saves buying drinking water, and makes for better tasting ice cubes. 22A I’ve seen spelled TSARS, TZARS, CZARS. Always need perps. Once again although I FIR, I didn’t get the theme until I came here and Susan ‘splained it. What a great write-up, Hahtoolah, thanx. It is obvious u put a lot of time into it. In the distant past our water here in Scottsdale was really terrible and undrinkable. But the City has worked mightily at correcting that and now I find it quite acceptable so don't buy any bottled water.
At the San Francisco airport it is impossible to buy plastic bottles. Only metal water bottles are available and so I now have a small collection. Did you notice that, Tony?

When you leave the men's room, the inside of the door glass is emblazoned with the label "WOMENS". Startling, until you realize that if it was truly a label it would appear backwards (to read properly on the OUTSIDE of the door). The sink faucets are gas pump handles, and the urinals are cut-out beer kegs. Back at the table, the napkins are shop rags, and the napkin rings are hose clamps. Pretty good food too, but a little spendy.
My hand is way up for filling AMPLE and REE. Those Star Wars names can be, and often are, ANYTHING! Anakin, Amydala, Chewbacca, Vader, Boba Fett, etc. REE sounds perfectly Star Warish to me. And, as several of you have already pointed out, AMPLE fits the clue.
Other than that, and ACHER and HUP, I found this to be a nice puzzle.

However, I doubt my daughter and her husband would forgive me for the error. They are die hard Star Wars fans as I'm sure I've mentioned before. I fear they would only regard me with disdain for not knowing the difference! Every time I visit them they have a new addition to their collection of characters in the room dedicated to them.
I also enjoyed the Indian Pow Wow of which I've been privileged to witness many both here and in Flagstaff. At the Heard Museum here the tribes have annual festivals featuring their dances which they perform in full tribal regalia. Very colorful! Thank you for posting that parade! Even young children perform the dances and look fetching in their costumes.
I went to an all boys prep school and was excited to begin my college career at the very co-educational University of Connecticut. I was invited to orientation before the school year began. The day was fun until needing to use the pissoir, I saw a room with MEN on the door, entered only to find no urinals and 3 or 4 giggling young ladies. No one screamed and they pointed out some rascal had scraped the WO off the door. Joke was on me and none of them were dishabille. 56 years ago.

Lemonade, Hi ! I learnt a new french word dishabille .... since I think I know you, I realized what it meant, but I'm not so sure I would use that word in public, with strangers...
So, it means scantily or sexually provocatively clad ....
It's never-the-less a very cute word, and apt, under the circumstances.
Would the opposite word (antonym) be "in flagrante delicto" ?
Thats how husbands or wives are sometimes 'caught', and the given reasons for an un-messy divorce. Or so, I've read about, in novels and novellas. Alas, I'm too late in my prime, to be caught anywhere and anytime, in such compromising positions ... ;-)
Picard, thank you for your video of the native american Pow-wow procession. There were no tomahawks swung, and no peace pipes waved... but an awful lot of bird feathers. And, more importantly, no rain fell, not a drop. Just yesterday, RayOSunshine was asking for a reverse rain dance, in his neck of the woods. Today, it seems to have worked.
Sadness follows...
I walked past the TV and Charlie Watts was on. "Must be Pledge Week," I thought. "PBS always pulls out the oldies to get an extra buck"...
Nope. Turns out Charlie, at 80, has crashed his last cymbal. R.I.P. Mr Watts.

Did anyone else see the long 55D clue (with its crossing 67A clue) before seeing the actual reveal at 60A? Well, I thought STIR CRAZY was a wonderful theme, and went looking for CRAZY all STIRred up in the longest answers. The lack of Zeds soon disallowed that! But, I think it might have promise as an idea for all you constructors😮🤔😁👍
