Thank you Emet for a slightly crunchy (to me) Monday FIR. Got off to a slow start in the NW as I couldn't picture the Angels cap, but ACAI gave me HAM and then the rest of the pieces fell into place. Teri tried picturing an Angel and got HALO immediately. She even knew what a "croque-monsieur" was.

Officially a FIW today, but I did see the cute DOGHOUSE theme (but only with the reveal). At first I saw the F and B at the two middle themers, but the M and B, O and B of the others squashed that thought. Interesting that the doghouse items all started with a B.
I messed up at 1A. Don’t you just hate that! This Canadian thought it was the Health Care Act, and I entered Mikos instead of OIKOS (was I thinking of the Greek island Mykonos?). HHLM made no sense, and I did not remember that Angel’s HALO. ALAS,
I noted UH NO and UGH.
We had an O-game with HALO, UH NO, RIO, COO, LOO, TYCO, NACHO, NEATO, ERGO.

-I am subbing today and just talked about fractions. I told them how Burger King tried to fight the quarter pounder by selling a third pounder. It failed because most people thought 1/3 is smaller than ¼.
-My DW just called with a computer question and I solved it just using iMessage! Three brownie pts!
-Waseeley – The only time I played a slot machine was a nickel machine. I got a cup full of nickels and entertained myself for an hour. When I got done the cup that held the nickels was filthy!
-It was incredibly INANE for Nebraska to fight off gambling. The number of cars with Nebraska plates in Iowa casino lots will definitely diminish.

I liked this puzzle except for SOURER, which left a, um, sour taste in my mouth. I think the first time I ever heard of a croque monsieur was from a Jacques Pรฉpin cooking show years ago.
If I recall, yesterday someone pointed out that MAHI is rarely, if ever, used in a fish taco, which is usually made with cod or some sort of white-fleshed fish. LW has used tilapia and even red snapper, which turned out quite nicely.
LW and I used to enjoy watching an Italian TV show called Inspector Montalbano, starring LUCA Zingaretti. He never ate a croque monsieur but he did eat some arancini (translated as croquettes) with great enthusiasm on a fun episode.

I might be misremembering, but it seems Dave Garroway, an original member of the NBC "Today" show, used to end his broadcasts by raising his hand and saying "Peace."
LIU "Anyway, in the case of "sour", you can say "sourer" and "more sour". Both are fine. Many people might avoid "sourer" because as Alexa noted, the "er-er" sound is awkward, at least in my accent. But certainly everyone should agree that "sourest" is pretty common: "That's the sourest strawberry I've ever eaten."
