Good morning!

Rain, glorious rain. We had a very nice shower come through early this morning. We certainly needed it.

Theme was easy, though d-o didn't recognize the GHOST pepper. Tried GRABS; GRIPS was better. Knew that CBGB stood for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues, but had to look up OMFUG -- Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers. Thanx for the outing, Dylan, and for the upbeat expo, Boomer.

Happy Birthday, Wilbur.

Happy Birthday, Wilbur Charles! We may have had our disagreements, but I think you’re a great guy! Mazel Tov!
As to the puzzle, I don’t have a lot to say about it. For the reveal, I knew it had to be “peppers” and in a few moments, came up with “stuffed” as well. FIR, so I’m happy.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, but erased disappear for GO MISSING, done for RIPE, and ekees for EDGES (UNTIE!). DNK Kingston/Bieber, ELI, BTS, RHEA, or BALOO.

One night in Miami? I would like one night in Paris better. Except that she's married. So am I.

HBDTY, WC. Many more!

Thanks to Dylan for the fun. I love spicy food, so the theme was an easy bonus. But this one reinforces my belief that the average Monday LATCW is harder than the average Tuesday version. And thanks to Boomer for another fine, funny review.

I finished this puzzle in 4:31 with "no poblano."

Rhea and Eli were unknown, though I'm thinking I had seen this "Rhea" person clued before somewhere. Makes me miss Carla from Cheers.

Oh joy, circles....

to Irish Miss, I love your posts,
to CE Dave, your humor brightens my morning,
to WC, you and I often think alike
and to Blue Hen, I wish we heard from you more often.
I hope you all had or will have a great day.
As for today's puzzle, it was enjoyable and easily solvable, although more chewy than Monday's puzzles used to be.
Rhea, Emma and Eli were solved with perps and wags. CBGB needed all perps.
Spores are not seeds. I taught this to my fifth graders. Google says, "The main difference between spores and seeds is that spores do not contain stored food resources and require more favorable conditions for the germination whereas seeds contain stored food in their endosperm, enabling them to germinate in harsh conditions as well."
I like hot peppers, but ghost peppers are too intense for me.

No poblano,,,
I wish I had thought of that Anon@8:02!

Stuffed peppers?
a Halloween dinner idea!

Ghost peppers?
Hmm, another idea!
Nah. I couldn't do that to little kids...
Maybe a treat to bring to the office though...

here's looking at you Wilbur!

Good Morning:

This would be a great introductory puzzle for newbies, and although Eli, as clued, and Baloo were unknown to me, the perps were Monday fair. I knew the circles would get a groan from SS, but I can abide them in early week puzzles. Rhea (Seehorn) is becoming a frequent visitor and Erie, of course, is almost ever present. See/Spot and the adjacent Hop/Upon were fun duos.

Thanks, Dylan, for a smooth start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for the irrepressible Boomer Humor. You continue to amaze and delight us, so many thanks!

Happy Birthday, Wilbur, hope you celebrate in style. 🎂🎁🎉🎊🎈

FLN

Belated Happy Birthday to CED, our lovable and mischievous resident Imp and to Bluehen, our resident Culinary Czar whose mouth-watering menus are missed!

Pat, that sign’s message was hilarious, please share some more!

I watched a very warm-hearted, touching movie last night, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris. No foul language, no half-naked people, no wild orgies, no violence, no gore, just a portrait of a selfless soul living a simple life, always putting others’ needs ahead of her own and finally having a dream come true and having her faith in human nature, and herself, restored. Simply put, a beautiful story.

Have a great day.

Fun Monday CW, FIR in 19. Did not seem like it took that long, I guess because it was fun. DNK: EMMA ANCHO RHEA BALOO, all needed perps. 64A coulda been ARENA or COURT; waited for one perp letter which came quickly w/ UBER. 9D first thought was "I bet it's a sneaky clue and the fill is MEOWER", but that's too short, so a straightforward answer TWEETER. Thanx DS for the fun. Thanx Boomer for YOUR fun: your write-up. I always look forward to Mondays to read your reviews. Happy BD WC!! I've got one coming up on the 24th: 78. Geez, what happened to 28? I liked being 28 much better! My Packers once again sucked canal water yesterday, playing terrible. The Jets/Packers game was a "how-to/how-NOT-to" play football demo. Sad.

Hi Y'all! Fun & fast solve, thanks, Dylan! More fun with Boomer, thanks!

BELL is the only PEPPER I knew. No red-letter runs today. Yay! But I tried several letters that turned red before I got the "H" in GHOST. Didn't remember that was a PEPPER. Never heard of ANCHO. Don't have the stomach for a lot of spicy stuff.

Also DNK: CBGB, TEBOW as clued, KPOP, RHEA, TERA.

BRANCH OF SERVICE surprised me when it perped in. I was expecting a specific BRANCH such as Marine Corps.

Happy Birthday, Wilbur Charles.

Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Dylan and Boomer (LOL re Musk/TWEETER)
I FIRed in good time, and saw the STUFFED PEPPERS theme (and they increased in spiciness as they appeared).

No inkblots today. I realized that Towel was too long and did not even start to enter. ROBE fit.
I had no perps for Disappear; two words GO MISSING filled. (Hi Jinx)
I also looked for a perp before deciding between GALA and Fete.

I can never remember CBGB, but it perped. As did any unknown names.
Same with the spelling of BALOO.

Happy Birthday WC.

Wishing you all a great day.

Let me repeat what I said yesterday. Yesterday was NOT Ms. Irish Miss’s birthday. The confusion arose because she said she was going to a celebration Sunday evening. But what the celebration was was her sister and brother- inlaw’s 68th wedding anniversary. Is that clear now, folks? Sheesh, I can see how rumors and misinformation gets started!

Yellowrocks said...

Happy unbirthday Irish Miss. You deserve an extra shoutout for being so special.

Hi All!

I love STUFFED PEPPERS (not keen on eating a GHOST pepper, though) so I enjoyed your puzzle, Dylan. Thanks.

Thanks for the chipper expo, Boomer. Glad to see you in good spirits.

WO: TARA -> TERA.
ESPs: EMMA, RHEA, ELI, BALOO
Fav: NAPPIES [Trevor Noah - TVMA]

Happy Birthday, WC.

Ray-O: Yes, Korean-POP.
Before K-Pop was a 'thing' (mid-'90s), DW's friend in grad-school fronted a bank called KPOP -- nothing to do with Korean music. I have the CD and it's pretty good (could use some sound-engineering) for a college-band.

Happy Unbirthday, IM ;-)

"No Poblano" -- Really cute, SpeedySolver, especially since an ancho is just a dried poblano. You win the Internet today.

Musings
-ANCHO - Having a Monday circled gimmick being unfamiliar was the only issue
-I have no interest in testing the accuracy of these, or any, PEPPERS on the Scoville scale
-TRAPS – We have gotten 20 mice in the last two weeks and have seen no evidence that any remain
-I enjoyed Saving Mr. Banks but got bored by One Night In Miami
-Why does Where’s Waldo wear stripes? Because he doesn’t want to be spotted. :-)
-A 200+ yard PAR 3? A bogey would be welcome for me.
-Fats Domino had no PIPS, but Gladys Knight did
-MEAL – None for me today because tomorrow my GI doctor will go looking for polyps. Today will be an uncomfortable EVE.
-RHEA’s character: As soon as Jimmy/Saul showed her who he was she should have left.
-Zeno’s dichotomy paradox says that if you continue getting HALFWAY to a point, you will never get there
-Baseball people know about PESKY’s Pole
-Happy Birthday, Bill!

Thought I received a few shout-outs in the puzzle today. Yes, I passed my ORALS many decades ago and that helped me become an ENGLISH professor down the line. Still remember wearing a ROBE at graduation with a bit of a GALA following. But no, I sure never became a NOBEL LAUREATE.

Well, time I went and ATE UP my breakfast cereal.

Thank you, Dylan, and thank you, Boomer.

Happy Birthday, Wilbur Charles !

I'd never heard of "Saving Mrs Banks" but the perps filled in EMMA easily enough. I didn't see a number of answers and clues until reading Boomer's review. I always try to read all the clues and answers when solving so I don't miss any new ploys. Reading the blog and fine reviews always completes any misses.

Boomer, back when I still bowled, during warmup I often threw the first ball at the 10 pin as it was my nemesis. The second ball was to find the line to the pocket.

As with Yellowrocks, I knew that seed was wrong as a clue for fern spore. Not a seed.

Me too, Tante. In addition to California Dreaming, so many great songs, like:
Dedicated To The One I Love.
Monday Monday.
I Saw Her Again.

I've been on the shores of Lake Superior out on Keweenaw Peninsula, and out on boats on Erie, Michigan and Huron but have never been to Lake Ontario. I wanted to see it when we went to Toronto for a wedding, but it was a whirlwind time mostly spent in and around Scarborough. Didn't get to go to the CN Tower either. It was featured in the movie "Canadian Bacon" which I find funny every time I watch it. Simply for the humorous takes on Canadian cliches and stereotypes. RHEA Perlman as Honey was obsessed with taking control of the CN Tower.

FLN, Dash T, I didn't realize you were such a big Astros fan. I watched the better part of 16 of those 18 innings, but I was flipping back and forth to the various college football games and missed Jeremy Pena's walkoff HR. Yup, tonight's game on TBS will decide whether the Cleveland Protectors or the New York Federals go to the ALCS against those Astros. The series between the Brotherly Lovers from Philly and the San Diego Friars should be exciting.

Yooper Phil, hand up for calling it a Crescent wrench. Two other brand names that come to mind are Channellocks and Vise Grips. Then there's the whole gamut of Allen wrenches, Bristol wrenches and Torx drivers. My neighbor is a plumber, and he has pipe wrenches of various sizes, which is what everyone around here would call them. But Rich Trethewey of This Old House calls them Stillson wrenches. I think that might be a New England thing.

Don't believe I've ever had ghost peppers, probably had ancho without knowing it. I do remember bell peppers from my childhod, though not fondly.

Looking good, WC! Hope your day is splendid.

TTP- I can’t hear Canadian Bacon without thinking of the iconic John Candy. You must return to Toronto (and add Niagara).
I was at U of T when the CN tower was being built, and watched its progress. Best memory was of the helicopter lowering the antenna into place! There now is an Edge Walk from the 116th storey, if you are brave enough!

TTP: I grew up loving The Cubs, appreciating The Cards, and HATING the Astros (always spoiled a post-season spot for the Chicago Blue).
After moving to Houston in '98, I'd listen to games on the radio and fell in love with Biggio & Bagwell. I stared rooting for H-Town but still keep the IL rivals in my heart during playoffs. '05 ('Stros over Cards) was sweet --I won a dollar from lifelong Card's fan (CEO) Bro.

For those who've not seen Michael Moore's not-a-documentary: the Trailer.

I find Canadian Bacon reminiscent of America's treatment of Canada in Infinite Jest [US would just jettison our trash over the boarder].

Soory, C, Eh! :-)
//But a Happy Unbirthday to you too.

Cheers, -T

By coincidence, I got to watch this KPOP group SS805 perform yesterday at our Asian American Festival.

Yes, another Santa Barbara festival! 805 is our area code, hence the name.

Dash T, I remembered that you were a Cubs and Cardinals fan, but did not know you became a big Astros fan. I am still a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, despite all of their losing seasons. Like you, I started faithfully watching the Astros when I moved to Houston.

Canadian Eh, I will definitely vist the CN Tower next time, but I'm not sure if I'll go up to the 116th floor Edge Walk. Maybe, if I'm not feeling light headed that day. And I definitely want to see Niagra Falls and that whole area. I should have gone when I lived relatively close in nearby Erie, Pa one summer. My parents honeymooned there. I did a close up on that trail along the river and followed along on the map you linked a week or so ago. Neat ! Thanks !

Jinx, I've heard people call pipe wrenches monkey wrenches forever, but monkey wrenches have flat jaws for turning nuts while pipe wrenches have serrated jaws for gripping pipe. They look very similar, but about the only time I see monkey wrenches anymore are in antique shops or at farm auction sales. Crescent wrenches have pretty much replaced monkey wrenches.
