Double Trouble
Toil and Trouble
November 8th of this month marked the 400th anniversary of the publication of the great dramatist William Shakespeare's 1st Folio, and our editor Patti and constructor Rena Cohen have certainly picked a great way to commemorate it. Today Rena celebrates it with a flourish of 4 starred themers ...
17A. *Naval rank of computer scientist Grace Hopper: REAR ADMIRAL. Grace Brewster Hopper (née Murray; December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy REAR ADMIRAL. Among her many accomplishments, perhaps the most significant was the invention of COBOL, an early programming language still in wide use today. She is also credited with first applying the term "BUG" to an early computer hardware failure (due to a moth stuck in a relay!). Years back Teri saw her speak and she gave every member in the audience a 1 foot length of insulated copper wire -- the distance that electricity travels in a nanosecond.
Dr. Grace Hopper Rear Admiral, US Navy |
23A. *British tennis player who won the 2021 US Open: EMMA RADUCANU. Emma Raducanu MBE (born 13 November 2002) is a British professional tennis player. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on 11 July 2022, and is a former British No. 1. Emma is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at the 1977 Wimbledon Championships. And a CSO to CanadianEh! as Emma was actually born in Canada ...

51A. *Drill command: FORWARD MARCH. I've never quite understood this command. Does anyone ever BACKWARD MARCH? Some people walk FUNNY, but these are usually FORWARD WALKS ...
61A. Create tension in a group, and a direction that was followed when forming the answer to each starred clue?: STIR UP DRAMA. Shakespeare's plays weren't presented in the round, so there are no circles to help us figure out the meaning of Rena's theme. But I think this grid should give away the PLOT ...
Here's the rest ...
Across:
1. Embryo's environment: WOMB.
5. Draw: APPEAL.
11. Collar: NAB.
14. Bailiwick: AREA. In English, the original French bailie combined with -wic, the Anglo-Saxon suffix (meaning a village) to produce a term meaning literally 'bailiff's village'—the original geographic scope of a bailiwick. In the 19th century, it was absorbed into American English as a metaphor for a sphere of knowledge or activity ...
15. "Me neither": NOR AM I.
16. Largest human cells: OVA. Found in the general AREA of
the 1A.

her stuff is pretty tame by today's standards ...

27. Bouquet garni element: BAY LEAF. You can buy the dried stuff in jar, or make your own.

38. [Theme clue].
41. Quilting party: BEE. Here's an article on The Quilting Bee Revival: Social Aspects of 1970s Quilting. Teri's sister Rose started back then, but she was never in a BEE. But she is still an expert quilter and seamstress. Hand up if you're a quilter?

Down:
1. Welcoming: WARM.

Stella Zawistowski |
6. Fluffy toy, familiarly: POM. The clue is a CSO to Irish Miss. But in this case the "toy" 44A is a Pomeranian.
Pomeranian |
8. Canal buildup: EARWAX. Not a supply chain problem in Panama. EARWAX (aka cerumen) helps protect the ear by trapping dust and other foreign particles that could filter through and damage the eardrum. Normally, earwax moves toward the opening of the ear and falls out or is washed away, but sometimes excessive earwax can buildup in the ear canal and become hard to remove. This is referred to as impacted cerumen:

An interesting combo of the difficult and the easy, but definitely sussable. That female tennis player? Only solved with the help of ESP. (For those new here, this is not psychic ability, but rather Every Single Perpendicular (letter)). Other than that, not to tough, IMHO. FIR, so I’m happy.
Good morning!
Got 'er done, Wite-Out-free with nary a thought about the theme. [Sigh] Enjoyed it though, so it was definitely not a turkey. Thanx, Rena, waseeley, and Teri. (Nope, we've never watched This Is Us chez d-otto.)
BARBELL: Somebody please explain how this answer matches the clue -- "Need to do some heavy lifting?" Yes, weight-lifters lift barbells, but how does the word answer the question?
EARWAX: Had to visit a medical professional to clear my right ear earlier this year. Seems to happen about every ten years.
UPI: I sat just a few feet from the UPI wire printer in the AM RADIO newsroom. For years my typing speed was stuck at 55 wpm. It's hard to type faster (or slower) with that constant chug-chug-chug in your ear.
Happy Thanksgiving, all. Today yours truly will be attempting to replace the hard-drive in our all-in-one computer. The trick isn't replacing the drive, it's getting the case apart and back together again. Then comes the joy of reinstalling the operating system and reloading the software and data files. If I'm not here tomorrow morning, you can assume that things did not go well.
OK, I think I've got it. A BARBELL is something needed when lifting weights.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone and in the words of Dickens' immortal Tiny Tim -- "God Bless Us Everyone!"
Here's DAB's bi-weekly crossword puzzle, which he calls Alternate Endings. He has this to say about it ...
"This web site now concludes its sixth year. Is it time for us to bring it to a close? We might; but we can’t decide what to do with our protagonist “David Alfred Bywaters.” Should we have him marry the princess and live happily ever after? Die in a shoot-out with rival crossword constructors? Maybe we’ll just have him wake up and discover that it was all a crazy dream."
D-O @6:04 AM Think of "Need" as a noun. And good luck with rebuilding your system.
D-O @6:48 AM. Great minds ... 😀
desper-otto
Barbell, you need one to do heavy lifting.
I'm sorry but that was really lame
Took 8:18 today for me to ... observe Ramadan.
(Don't worry, I won't be fasting for long, especially today.)
Had no idea about the British tennis player, who evidently was born in Canada.
I'm short on time, so Happy Thanksgiving, to all who celebrate.
I am thankful for many things, and that includes the daily joy I find on this blog.
(Naturally, I am referring to days without those dreaded circles.)
I think a cleaver puzzle a lot of unknowns sussed through . Thank you and happy Thanksgiving
Bill, it's actually FORWARD, MARCH (note the comma) and yes, sometimes the command is "To the rear, March" or "By the left flank, March" etc. with other commands for the pace.
FIR, but erased trial for DRAFT, icon for IDOL, and veto for UNDO. Took forever to accept RANDUCANDU and TAIGA. "Can-du ran-du" sounds like a made up corporate rah-rah slogan.
Today is:
THANKSGIVING DAY (we had ours yesterday. We treat today like Super Bowl Sunday. Junk food all day, but no funny commercials. GO COWBOYS!)
TURKEY FREE THANKSGIVING (nuts)
NATIONAL EAT A CRANBERRY DAY (nuts)
NATIONAL CASHEW DAY (nuts, but these I like these nuts)
NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING (reminder of the democide and suffering of Native American people. European settlers forced them off their lands and into casinos.)
FIBONACCI DAY (honors Leonardo Bonacci, AKA Leonardo Fibonacci. The Fibonacci sequence is known as “nature’s secret code.” Celebrated every year on 1 1 2 3.
NATIONAL ESPRESSO DAY (originally meant a coffee expressly made for the person ordering it)
WOLFENOOT (encourages people to be kind to animals, especially dogs as they are descendants of the wolf)
"Collar" is so stale as a clue for NAB. What not "radio and TV grp?" (National Association of Broadcasters)
At first I wanted TOO EXPENSIVE for groceries, but it wouldn't fit.
FLN:
Picard, that was my own snapshot - you can tell by the awful framing. As I was in the bathroom, I was trying to make my photography as clandestine as possible. IIRC, that Ford's Garage was the original one, located in Ft. Meyers. They probably had a zillion patrons tell them that WOMENS should be in mirror image, and fixed it for their many other stores. (Ford wintered in Ft. Meyers, which was the inspiration for the restaurant.) BTW, the urinals are made from beer kegs, their sink faucets look like gas nozzles, napkins are shop "rags" and are wrapped with hose clamps. A Model A hangs from the ceiling in many stores, and all have lots of Ford memorabilia displayed.
Bayou Tony said "I just got an ad for bras for "small sizes."" In my case it meant that if I don't stop gaining weight, I'll be a full C cup before long. So I lost 80 pounds and most of my nice rack.
Thanks to Bill 'n' Teri for the fun review, and Sloop John B. I remember seeing Grace on (I think) 60 minutes handing out those wires, calling them "nanoseconds."
FIR, and Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Now to the puzzle: I really dislike all the proper names, and it took coming here to understand the theme. I expect Thursday puzzles to be on the crunchy side, but this one was over the top in my opinion, for what that's worth.
DW: “Put down the pen. Don’t even think of doing that crossword puzzle today! Get in the kitchen and make yourself useful.

Me: “Yes dear. Pass me the potato peeler” 🥔🥔🥔🥔

Happy Thanksgiving Day to my cornerite buds. 🦃
Musings
-Even EMMA RADUCANU was not a problem
-Tell me again how you pronounce WOMB, COMB and BOMB :-)
-Will you have someone at Thanksgiving today who will try to STIR UP DRAMA?
-Speaking of quilts…
-Like others, our town has had vigorous debates about what is in our library
-Speaking of debates, I have had to engage “We landed on the Moon” DENIERS
-All ADVICE is not from a wise person
Thank you, Rena Cohen, and thank you, Waseeley.
Most of the answers came rather easily, but I hadn't a clue as to what the theme answers had in common. That is, until the reveal, and then it all became clear. T
he only trouble area was making certain that I was getting the correct spelling of EMMA RADUCANU. A tip of the hat to all the perp help.
I also needed a few perps to see that the answer was going to be MSNBC for "The ReidOut" network. Catchy program title.
Nice job, waseeley, but when you started with a vid of Double Trouble... I should have known that you weren't linking Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble. :>)
AMANDA Gorman - Such an inspirational story that is still being written. I'd read some news stories on her before after she delivered the inaugural poem. The list of accolades just keeps growing.
Oops, gotta run.
Good Morning:
This was a well hidden theme and, even after seeing the reveal, it took a few seconds to see the Drama unfold! Of course, Emma Aducandu and Taiga were completely unknown, but perps were kind, so no complaints. I went astray at Nor Can I/Nor Am I, I'm Up/I'm On, and the very tricky Puss/Dora. The grid was clean and offered some nice long fill and the difficulty level was just right, as Goldilocks might say.
Thanks, Rena, for a Thursday treat and thanks, Bill, for the always enlightening and entertaining tour. Enjoyed the beautiful rendition of Over The Rainbow. I was a big fan of This Is Us from day one and saw every episode. My favorite roles were those of Jack, Toby, and the adult Nicky, although the whole cast performed very well as an ensemble. The last year or so, though, became a little too focused on the repetitive (and competitive!) angst of Kevin, Kate, and Randall, IMO. Thanks for the "Fluffy" CSO. 😉
Happy Thanksgiving everyone ! 🦃
billocohoes @7:59 AM I guess Patti forgot to include the comma in the HTML skeleton we get from her. Nevertheless, you should be aware that we bloggers are issued a poetic license as an incentive to review crosswords. If you don't believe me, ask MOE. 😀
Jinx @8:07 AM Thanx for the tip on the Fibonacci sequence. That date will be easy to remember as today is also DR WHO DAY -- he first landed his TARDIS in a London junkyard 60 years ago today, -- the day after C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley died. For some reason nobody remembers their deaths. 😥 Anywho, he (Dr. Who) will be making an appearance in next week's puzzle, but that's not a spoiler.
KS @8:12 AM If you don't like proper names you should give the aforelinked puzzle by David Alfred Bywaters. It has only 3, and they're mythological.
Ray - O 8:19 AM LMAO!
FLN I did do yesterday's puzzle, but was helping Teri "make Thanksgiving happen". But I didn't want to slight JzB on his, as usual, excellent review. And I'm not STRINGING you along.
Ray-O@8:19, my potatoes were all peeled yesterday. We make our potato filling and refrigerate it overnight and then bake it today after the pumpkin pies are done.
The Admiral gave me my start today. Things progressed from there. Shotgun approach was most effective today. I hopped all over but got it done . FIR.
Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all a great meal.
ZZZZZZZ!
Happy Thanksgiving one and all!
No DRAMA today. Filled it rapidly and yes, I knew EMMA RADUCANU, born in Canada, and played another Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the finals of the US Open. Both were teenagers at the time. Emma's parents were Romanian and Chinese. Leylah's parents are Fillipino and Ecudorian. They have the world covered.
SCAR, TESS, MARIE (knew Kondo)- unknowns filled by perps
BAY LEAF- buy it in a jar or pick some off the tree in my brother-in-law's yard
Reid and MSNBC- made for each other.
RARE- winning tickets are not that rare; there's usually one, just not YOURS
YOYO TRICKS- I could do both 'walk the dog' and 'rock the cradle'. Also a 'John Glenn (three orbits) and a 'loop de loop'.
Ray-o- sunshine- tell DW to cook it in advance like we do and freeze it. Candied yams last week, stuffed mirlitons, and a few other dishes. Prepared the spiral-sliced ham and baked the pecan pie last night. The turkey, crab dip, shrimp patties, baked macaroni, and other are being brought by relatives. It is a buffet at our house. I have clean up duty.
Gary- BIRD, WORD, HEARD, & TURD all rhyme with SLURRED.
Forgot to look for the theme because kitchen duty is calling, but the puzzle was fun and thank you waseeley for the music and interesting revue. TAIGA and XANAX were new to me.
billocohoes - Yes, the comma makes a difference, like “Call me, Bill” or Call me Bill”. Remember it from ROTC days.
HG and waseeley - any reference to quilts pleases me. I grew up where many women quilted. My Mother made quilts for many family members including 10 grandchildren. I have one 8’ X 12’ hanging on my wall.
Happy turkey day, all!
Northeast corner got me. Didn't know the tennis player, the brand name or the cartoon lion so i was done. Other wise nice puzzle.
Learning moment: Taiga
Myopic Mr Magoo moment:
DEALdash? I thought it said DOORdash! Which had me wondering who is bidding on my take out dinner order?
Stir up drama?
Reminds me of a tv show I cannot stand, but DW watches it all the time.
I cannot fathom how anyone can get any enjoyment out of it, unless they are taking drama lessons...
Managed to get the FIR, but this turkey "did not spark joy". Too much obscurity for my taste. A pleasant Thanksgiving to all!
CED @ 11:59 ~ DealDash was so similar to DoorDash that I immediately wrote in Eats as the answer. But unlike you, I can't even blame myopia because I knew it wasn't DoorDash!
Belated thanks to Teri for her contributions.
Hola!
Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!
Thank you, Rena Cohen, for an easy puzzle that I finished in good time. My yams are on the stove and will soon need attention. That's all I'm taking to the feast.
WOMB and OVA are made for each other.
AVA DuVernay made an impression on me when she was interviewed on PBS.
It's not likely that anyone will STIR UP DRAMA at our gathering but you never know. I'm taking my Scrabble game in case I can interest anyone in a game.
WE have an AMANDA in our family. She is married to my nephew, Michael.
I hope you all enjoy your day with friends and/or family! I will travel with my niece about 25 miles to Gilbert, AZ.
Thank you, Bill and Terri!
The ReidOut is still on. Her old show was cancelled but given new life as the ReidOut.
Again had a moment's break to do the puzzle while granddaughter is napping.
Dinner today is a team effort with different dishes assigned- starting last night and continuing into today. I was assigned the stuffing/dressing and assisting with my grandma's potato crescent rolls. The main coordination is deciding who gets to use the oven and when , so everything is done for eating at 3ish.
I enjoyed "This is Us" but never watched all the episodes. Sterling K Brown is a favorite actor in it and anything else he does.
Both my daughter and DIL were into the Marie KONDO tidying up guidelines - but just like Marie - after she and they had kids - a lot went out the window- so I don't look like a slob comparatively anymore.

Thanks and happy Thanksgiving to Bill & Teri and all the Cornerites; and thanks to Rena for the puzzle
Happy Thanksgiving you all!
Waseeley unpacks today's Cohen XWD...
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, ALL!
Like several others, I did not know TAIGA. Still didn't know if it was a word or an acronym before checking today's link.
"Land of little sticks" seems awfully cute for a Russian word. My guess is it was adopted into Russian from some indigenous lingo.
But not BANTU.
~ OMK
____________
DR: Three diagonals, on the near side.
The central diagonal gives us a today's anagram (12 of 15).
Allowing for a variation from standard English spelling, this could refer to a dynastic leader of a middle eastern land, one who as a kid grew up under the influence of Hollywood western movies.
Today, he may wear a ten-gallon Stetson while ruling his country with (the threat of) double six-shooters.
Yup, it's ...
"A COWBOY AMEER!
Hi All!
Nope. Rena beat me but good this Thanksgiving. I could NOT crack the Great White North of 7d, 8d, 9d, and 23a. I knew I needed a DRA at 23a so guessed EMMA darCANU.
Do I get a consolation prize?
Why yes; Turkey, Ham, Potatoes, Stuffing, and what's not to love about 1 1 2 3?
Thanks waseeley for the fun links [#MinistryofSillyWalks] in the review.
WO: Ahs -> AAH
ESPs: AVA, TESS
Fav: I learned TAIGA is a word. And having Grace Hopper in the puzzle is always a treat.
FLN - CED: I just got a Tamu ad ;-)
And, hey, if the product looks good, click the ad. Kinda helps keep the blog afloat (or click the Donate button on the right side of the page and really show some love).
DO - have you thought about just mirroring the current drive and then expanding the volume? Much quicker than re-installing everything from scratch.
Lucina - careful not to drop XANAX on the Scrabble board today. If you want to USE an X, go for XENON [chemical Xe]. Won me bigly after the challenge.
I have a free-spinning YO-YO. You can do all kinds of TRICKS with them 'cuz they don't stop spinning. The hardest part is getting the damn thing to rewind itself.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Take stock of the blessings around you now and every day.
Cheers!, -T
There's still time to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks to Rena and Bill and Teri! It took me a few laps to pick away at the unknowns.
That type of "canal" and that meaning for "toy" were tricky but fun to finally see.
FLN. Thanks to -T and TTP for the extra cookie info.
I didn’t make it here today earlier, but I will claim my CSOs (yes I have heard of TAIGA and EMMA - actually I have seen a lot of TAIGA in my northern travels).
I hope that all my American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving with food, family and friends.
Sigh. I left one of my bowls at the party site so tomorrow I shall make the trip back to retrieve it.
So our Thanksgiving was derailed a bit...
MIL had to go to hospital [she's fine now] so we smuggled in a Thanksgiving plate (and the xword) for her.
MIL is being held overnight for observation and it seems the only real issue (now) is low magnesium. If salt was her problem, the ham fixed that ;-)
Nite all! -T
Hope y’all have a Happy 🦃 Day!
“Cheesy clue”, BWAAHAAHAH good one, Mr. Bill! Always enjoy your reviews, and yes, the “Pet Sounds” was quite the innovative work from Mssr. Wilson. I’m still trying to absorb what he did in it.
For some reason, I recalled the word TAIGA after “tundra” was too big; must’ve been all of the National Geographic reading I’d done in my younger days. FIR, so even with EMMA-whazzahoisie, I can’t complain!,
Went to the niece’s abode for the pig-fest — ham, turkey, ‘taters, salad…and more. Plus two pies. I’m not gonna need to eat until Saturday or so… 😆👍🏽
