When did gray matter become WHITE MATTER? Once again, d-o solved the puzzle but failed to get the theme. Finished in good time with no need for Wite-Out. Thanx, Roland and Boomer.
TV ADS -- If we couldn't F-F through the ads, we wouldn't watch much TV. We also time delay almost everything. We watch Jeopardy! in the evening, even though it's on "live" in late morning.
FLU -- Yup, I get that flu shot every year. Some years it's very effective, others, not so much. The medical folks have to guess in the spring which flu strains will be active in the fall. Sometimes they get it wrong.
PART D -- I encourage all Medicare beneficiaries to check PART D plans every year during open enrollment. Just go to medicare.gov, enter your medications, and see which plan offers the best price. You can switch plans every year with no penalty. Last year I switched, because my cheap 2018 plan became one of the most expensive 2019 plans.
SALERNO -- This is the Salerno of my ute.

Boomer -and everyone else - even if you haven't before - get your flu shot!! You are relatively immunosuppressed with your cancer treatment and if you got the flu would have a harder time fighting it off. The flu shot is usually ~50 % effective- but I see this all the time- even if you get the flu and had the shot- you are much less sick because it is helping your immune system to jump on it sooner (e.g. person who had a flu shot - temp usually 99-101 for a few days, sick for about a week vs person who did not have a flu shot- temp 102 to 106 for 5-8 days and sick for 2-4 weeks afterward!) Boomer, what's a whooper ?
@Spitzboov- getting a flu shot in February is way too late!! If you are >65, then fine to get now as you get the HD immunization which has a longer peak of 6 months. If you are < 65, then anytime in October / November. The flu season is generally end of November through March. So you can go to your doctor's office anytime just to get the shot or get it at your local pharmacy if it's inconvenient to go to your doctor's office before February!

My grandfather died of the flu pandemic of 1918, when my dad was 4. I'm not taking any chances. Spitz, why wait? Around here we run out of the high-dose dosage, which is recommended for seniors.

Today's puzzle by Roland was a good Monday level puzzle. Boomer added the info and humor to the grid tour.
Only one word was unknown: BAO. However, there were a few where I knew the word, but my spelling was not correct at first: COEUR, FOIE and AMOUR. Perps to the rescue.
I got my flu shot on Friday also. This year I got the Senior Flu shot at the local Geisinger medical office because last year when I had the regular strength Flu shot I came down with the flu in January and then again in March. Apparently as we age our immune systems need more antigens to create stronger protection from the Flu. See Flu Article 1 and Flu Article 2.
@Spitzboov 9:21: Like inanehiker said, I wouldn't wait until February to get a flu shot based on my experience from last year. See above.
Boomer: You might want to reconsider your decision to not get a flu shot. Immune systems change as we get older.

My mom called a wooden cutting board a breadboard all her life. When she was young, all bread was homemade and was cut on a breadboard. When I was growing up mom baked bread only occasionally. I baked it even less occasionally. One time when I tried to bake it, I left the dough to rise. Then David at age two broke his leg and we took him to the emergency room. By the time we returned hours later the dough had ballooned astronomically. Without much hope for a good result, I punched it down and continued with the recipe. The baked bread was tough and inedible.

This Gramma is exhausted, and so fully respects grands who help with childcare for their kids. AND it rained all weekend!!! We had fun anyway!

Medgar Evers volunteered for service during WWII. He participated in the Battle of Normandy. In the early 50s he got involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1963 he was assassinated in front of his two children while walking to his car in the driveway of his home. His killer, Byron De La Beckwith, was found not guilty by all white juries in two separate trials. In 1994
Beckwith was tried again and found guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison. RIP, Edgar.

I am an ardent admirer of ABIGAIL Adams. She was unusually outspoken for the time and thanks to the vast correspondence between her and her husband, John, we have wonderful insight to not only their relationship but her views of the development of the fledgling nation.

A suitable recipe today from Howard at the Mr. Food Test Kitchen:
Old-World Harvest Casserole (tzimmes?)
What You'll Need:
2 (29-ounce) cans sweet potatoes, drained
2 (14-1/2-ounce) cans whole carrots, drained
1 (20-ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 1/2 cup pitted dry prunes
1/2 cup orange juice
3/4 cup honey
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter, melted
1 teaspoon salt
What To Do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine the ingredients; mix well.
Bake uncovered 60 to 65 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally.
Spoon mixture into casserole dish.

We know, this may sound a …well just let’s say, a bit odd, but let me assure you it’s anything but. Our favorite part is when the topping of this gets a bit toasty, which gives it a nutty rich flavor. I found a little crunch in this CW today, but I FIRed and saw the WHITE theme. IMHO the theme was a little meh! but maybe just a Monday letdown.

I smiled at HOT STUFF crossing BUFFS, and ACHE crossing ASPIRIN. (I agree Boomer that ASPIRIN is "old school" now -- for everything except secondary (no longer primary) prevention in established cardiovascular disease.)
It can be GRIM when even the FAIREST singers GET UP and GO FLAT.
Yes Boomer, FLU shots work, but some years the strain match is closer than other years, improving the efficacy. Many benefits (also the "herd immunity" which protects others who cannot have the shot). I see inanehiker et al have already chimed in on this topic. Our stock of vaccine does not usually arrive until late October.

The annual flu shot is better than nothing. We Americans have worked hard to expunge historical memory, but if you study the years 1918-1920 and the Spanish flu you will find that the influenza not just put people in bed for a while, but KILLED widely.
I'd rather avoid that ... even if the vaccine is not at a 100% level, even if some different strain comes along.
Jerome Gunderson @ 11:32, there were hung juries for Byron De La Beckwith's first two trials. Found guilty after a third trial in 1994 after new evidence found. Double jeopardy laws would prevent another trial after a not-guilty finding.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I've aggravated an old back injury so we're staying home tonight where I can sit more comfortably. I did have a nice visit with my favorite chiropractor who is helping me with this issue. I do read the blog every day, I just don't feel I have anything to add to the conversations. My age hasn't bothered me much until this year. For the first time my age starts with a 7. That's sobering, but better than the alternative.

I must get my flu shot. I make it a point to always stay ahead of the season--because of family lore.
My mother's parents, immigrants from Cornwall (Grandpa) and Wales (Grandma) died in Sacramento in the 1918 epidemic--just two months after my mom was born.
She was raised by her aunt, her father's married sister.
It is a sad, romantic tale. My grandparents were in their early 20s, looking wonderfully handsome in the one photo I have. My young grandad had trekked all the way across country from PA to CA where he met my beautiful grandma, who had sailed around the Horn to find work here as a nurse.
They found each other.
They married, had my mom, and then died within a week of one another.
I think of them every time I get my shot.

Note to TTP. There are people that show up at Twins games and let loose LOUD WHOOs for no apparent reason. We had a few in a Spring bowling league also, and I won't be joining that league in the future.
Note to JINX, Of course my Dodge van has an odometer. But I do not have a TRIP odometer. If I want to know the length of a trip, I need to write down the mileage setting when I leave, and again when I get there, then do the math.

I just went to OfficeMax to have the Newsletter printed then to Walgreen's for my flu shot. Honestly, I don't see how OfficeMax stays in business. It's mostly deserted and with only one clerk and a long waiting line in the printing area.
Thank all who have given a Shout Out to the New Year. Spitz - the tzimmes recipe sounds perfect but we use fresh sweet potatoes, carrots, and pineapples. May the year 5780 be a happy healthy and fulfilling year for all. I have started the year still battling pneumonia and a broken blood vessel in my good eye Subconjunctival bleeding - please do not click if pictures upset you.

OMK, that is one of the sweetest saddest stories and a reminder of what progress has brought, even with all the bad things we do not have to deal with many old fears.
