to salute all veterans out there on this Veteran's day! My Dad served
in the Pacific in the Big War, and my son served in the Navy in the
Persian Gulf (Iraq) scuffle. Yes I am in your group in a small way.
Entered the Army in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam war. Suffered an
improbable injury on the final day of basic training and ended up as a
corpsman in the US Army hospital at Fort Campbell. Served there for
about 18 months, then completed my service in Hardheim, Germany in a
battalion owning a Nike Herc missile. I never got to see it, but I
assume it was pointed at the Kremlin.
Happy Veteran's Day to all who served, and a kudos to all family members who continue to support troops while they are away.

I saw "Clod hopper" and "Sleepless nursery rhyme character." I do a lot of mis-reading lately. No problem with the puzzle...big problem with the theme. That long "O" in the middle seems awfully weak. Thanx, Kevin and for the tour, Boomer. (I was also E-5.)
ANGEL: The only "Trout" I'm familiar with is Kilgore. Well, also rainbow and speckled.
YEN: When I visited Japan the exchange rate was 360 to the dollar. You could take a taxi anywhere in Tokyo for the equivalent of 15-20 cents.

I salute all those who served in my family. My FIL who was in WWII in Europe and the Pacific, my dad who served in the Marines in WWII and then naval reserves for 30 years, my brother in the Army and then retired in the National Guard while working as a schoolteacher, and my son who is currently in the Air Force.
My husband says he still remembers the talk they were given in high school about the draft coming up, but it was stopped after his freshman year in high school.
FIR with nary an erasure. Monday! But I forgot to look for the theme. As always, I had to wait for OLA(f or v).
We get a lot of puzzles that use EDIE Falco. I wonder why we never see the face that (I suspect) is much better known, that of Stephanie Courtney.
My one grandfather served in the Spanish-American war. The other died young from the flu in 1918. My father lost most of his hearing from scarlet fever and as ineligible for service. I got a high lottery number during the Vietnam war and wasn't about to volunteer. No sons, but I have a nephew who is a lifer in the USMC. Went in right out of high school, got out and got his college degree, then went back in as an officer. His wife was a Navy MD, but is now in private practice.

Easy Monday puzzle. It seemed almost themeless. BO, GO, NO, SO is a so-so theme.

I am doing exercises in the POOL at the Y three times a week. It is helping my balance and my core. I also am doing PT for my neck and my shoulder. I see improvement.
I have never heard BY JOVE, except in movies. I see it in novels, mostly from British authors.

I have not posted because generally I am several days behind and it is history at that point. So I am tickled to be here today!

The ”theme” of sorts was a gimme, typical for Monday, but some decent other answers. But in general, I’ve never understood the logic for the super easy early week puzzles. The argument is it encourages newbies to do crosswords, but to me me you are turning off your core base of solvers that find them too easy or uninteresting. I do them out of habit but really could skip Mon and Tues. Same with Sudoku, the one in my paper today literally required no logical thinking.

Three inches of snow here so far, no snow service as the Landscaper is up to his ears in finishing landscaping work, and his winter crews are not complete yet. DH cut a deal with him to use the small plows to clear the walkways and stairs here for our HOA residents. The city can't plow the streets to the curb because the leaves haven't been cleared yet as they all seemed to fall at once after the Halloween snow. An airplane skid off the runway at O'Hare. I guess no one is ready for this. At least it's quite beautiful out there.

CED, yes, I did the LAT in the Star Ledger yesterday. I looked up the theme and the constructor on the LAT website before I started. What annoys me more are the substitutions they make for diacritical marks. Sometimes the clue is impossible to guess.
I enjoyed the Sunday puzzle. My only faux pas was the ND in LUND. Now I see that an ABC run for A-SPACE would have given me the D, so I could have "wag"ed the N.
I attended a regional square dance yesterday afternoon, so I did not post.

Delightful Monday puzzle, many thanks, Kevin. I got every bit of it without erasure or problem--a wonderful way to start the week. EDIE Falco does show up a lot in puzzles--always nice to see her, and another regular, UTA Hagen. Cute to see SIRI described as a "virtual" assistant. Took me a minute to figure out the theme, but there they were, all those Os. Thanks, again Kevin. And I loved seeing those pictures of Boomer--especially the one on Burnikel road.

Boomer: There is a road near Jamestown, NY, named "Fardink Rd" after my great aunt and uncle whose farm, the Fardink Farm, was on that road for decades. It is a small world.
Puzzle was very easy. Caught the theme answers, but I did not get them. Did not notice the O word in the middle until I came here. Oh well. That happens to me a lot.

I have been to N DAK. Big state. My primary doctor is from there, so when I went I mailed him a postcard from North Dakota.

One of the moms that brings her daughters to the school I guard at is Greek. Today is one of her daughter's "Name Day." Of course I never heard of that. She explained that Greeks get their names from Saints. The Name Day is the day that honors that Saint. They have a party, go to dinner, etc. I thought that was interesting.
This morning it was 24 degrees and windy with snow falling fairly heavy. Guarding the Crossing was a real pleasure. But necessary.
Well, off to the rest of my day. Have to finish reading our Book Club Book. "Carnegie's Maid" by Marie Benedict. So far, pretty good book. A novel.

Spitzboof - Yup, the photo was taken near Medora, but I have never played golf on that Mountain course.
TTP I had 534 this morning. I put a 16 pound ball in the bag and used it for the full three games. Missed three ten pins or I would have done a bit better.
Boomer @ 1345 - We had a ship reunion at Medora in August, 2001. Flew to MSP late in the day and stayed overnight in St. Cloud. Then drove on I 94 all the way to Medora the next day.

Since we seem to be naming eponymous places, mine is Sandoval County in New Mexico. I can't find any history but my family was originally from there so presumably it is named after one of my ancestors. I'll have to check with the family genealogist who has done extensive research on the Sandovals.

CC I am curious what was wrong with that cover of UTNE? As it turns out, it has just ended publication. A terrible loss. It was a rare magazine that sought out positive solutions and gleaned news from relatively obscure sources that deserved more attention. I had subscribed since its inception and will very much miss it.
Irish Miss thank you for the answer regarding your DVR. It makes sense to be able to go back, so I suppose REW would be one way to do that. The device I use allows skipping forward or backwards which I find more useful. Thanks!

My husband served in the USAF stateside during the Korean War as a radar mechanic crew chief. Before I knew him. My son served as a USAF pilot retiring after 15 years as a major. Flew over some scary places. But his wife serving stateside raising four boys had the scariest duty when their neighborhood burned from an arson fire and she had to evacuate with kids & dogs & only the clothes on their back. So thank you to those who served in the military and those who served at home.

Did anyone watch the PBS show on Native Americans in the Military tonight. I thought the program was pretty good. I'm watching the D-Day recon documentary now.

WC - you asked about the sudden text messages that appeared across the country. Here's what little I know:
Last week, carriers were working on an upgrade to their interconnect systems. At around 2a CST folks got texts from 2/14/19 "at random."
A buddy said it was the exact same text he'd sent back then (I have a screen shot). I was concerned that "WTF are cell companies keeping our data that long?" As it turned out, the recipient (another buddy down the hall) never got his 2/14 message (I have that screen shot too).
[And why are dudes texting each other on Valentine's Day? (Not that there's anything wrong with that) :-)].*
Anyway, my guestimation is there was a server/system, somewhere, constipated with messages that, when the interconnect was tested, suddenly released itself. That's my $0.02 and best I know.

OK, Buddy #2 relieved a text at 2a last week that Buddy #1 sent on 2/14.
Buddy #1 shows it in his sent thread on 2/14 while Buddy #2 didn't get it/shows in his thread until 2a last week.
