Hello Cornerites!
sumdaze here with another fun Brian Callahan puzzle. This is his 5th L.A. Times puzzle. Two were collaborations with Assistant Editor Katie Hale.
17 Across. Stretch of a blowout game when bench players come in: GARBAGE TIME.
I am familiar with this concept but was unfamiliar with this term. As you might guess, it refers to the period of time towards the end of a game where one opponent's score is so far ahead that the outcome has effectively already been decided. "Bench players" refers to the substitutes that come in to replace the starters in this hopeless situation. Some credit Chick Hearn (play-by-play announcer for the L.A. Lakers) with coining the term.
26 Across. Citrus grove inhabitant: ORANGE TREE. Ever try telling a 2-year old that you have an ORANGE tree in your backyard?
38 Across. Sulu player before John Cho: GEORGE TAKEI.
Born April 20, 1937, TAKEI is a Japanese-American actor, author, and activist. He portrayed Hikaru Sulu on the TV series Star Trek from 1966 to 1969 (plus follow-ons). |

61. Informal meeting, and what can be found in 17-, 26-, 38-, and 51-Across?: GET TOGETHER.
Notice that the word "GET" always spans the 2-word answers. You might say it "GETs them TOGETHER". Very clever!
GET it? Got it? Good!
And now, for our theme's theme song:
Get Together was recorded in 1967 by The Youngbloods.
Chester Powers wrote it in the early '60s.
NPR's Morning Edition did this piece on it in 2019 as part of its American Anthem series.

Thanks to Splynter for covering while I was away! I'm sure everyone was happy to read you again!
Some of you might recall that I did a cycling trip in the Canadian Rockies last summer. I had such a good time that I went back for a similar trip. This time I cycled in the Kootenay Range, British Columbia. Good times! (Hi CanadianEh! I'm sure I don't have to tell you that you live in a beautiful country!)

This puzzle struck me as having considerably more “crunch” than the “standard “ Monday puzzle. For one thing, you’d practically have to be a “Trekkie” to come up with the actor who played “Mr. Sulu.” And there were some other difficulties, such as coming up with “OMG Yes.” Anyway, having said all that, I managed to FIR, so I’m happy.
Good morning!
Subgenius, you don't need to be a Trekker, just old. Takei and his family were interned during WWII. Yay, d-o got the theme. Just to be certain, Brian put "GET" twice in his reveal answer. This was a NOICE walk in the park. Thanx, Brian. Welcome back, sumdaze, and thanx for 'splainin' NOICE. (65 miles! That sounds familiar to dw and moi. In this hot weather we bike 6.5 miles and call it 10.)
Dave Dudley: He was a "local guy" back in the '60s, and WSPT (W-Spit) played the heck out of Six Days On The Road.
FIR, but erased snore for SNORT, and petry for PETRI (guess I'm still carrying a torch for Mary Tyler Moore.)
Today is:
NATIONAL NAVAJO CODE TALKERS DAY
WORLD LIZARD DAY (Leisure Suit Larry must have started it)
NATIONAL CREAMSICLE DAY
I know a lot of the original Star Trek stars, but never got into the imitators. GEORGE TAKEI is a buddy of Howard Stern, and appears on his show frequently. One of the most interesting guests I've heard on the show, but I haven't listened in about 10 years (when I quit paying for Sirius.)
Thanks to Brian for the fun, and welcome back Sundaze.
FIR. The theme escaped me until I got here. Another Monday endeavor, not too hard, not too easy.
I detect something different in the puzzle editing by the LAT. I can't put my finger on it, but something has changed.
Took 3:59 for me to juuust get in under the standard set by Sir Roger Bannister.
sumdaze, I too thought of "Goody Two Shoes" at Adam Ant.
Kalel adjacent to George Takei doesn't strike me as a usual Monday, but that's ok.
A little crunch for a Monday but FIR with no white-out. Thanks for the informative recap sumdaze…. kkFlorida
Good Morning! Thanks, Brian, for a fun start to the week. And welcome back, sumdaze. Sounds like quite an adventure you had! Congrats!!
I saw the GET in the theme, but missed the part that it tied the words TOGETHER. Nice!!
ESPs: OMG YES – I had no idea what this clue meant, and I was completely fooled by tee/RAG. I was locked into golf.
Mesmerized with the ENYA video – love her music.
LOL the Mensa bus toon.
A parting CSO to my fellow lefties, one day late, on National SOUTHPAW Day!! Ah, the memories of dealing - I learned to knit using mirror image to my right-handed mother. One "talent" attributed to my handedness might have been that I could write from right to left, not very useful, but fun.
Good Morning:
Subgenius @ 4:06 ~ I’m not a Trekkie but George Takei is very well known as an actor and activist. OTOH, I have never heard the term Garbage Time but I don’t watch basketball, the sport that it’s seemingly most associated with. You’re correct, though, that the puzzle has more crunch than a typical Monday. Of course, there is a difference between what a typical Monday is now, compared to what a typical Monday was under Rich’s stewardship. Other than the aforementioned Garbage Time, the themers were solid and the reveal was a surprise, for me anyway, as the GET didn’t jump out during the solve. IMO, the 22 three letter words and the 10 fill in the blank clues detracted from a pleasant solving experience.
Thanks, Brian, and thanks, sumdaze, for your usual bountiful factual and fun-filled review and cute cartoons, visuals, and links. We missed you but it sounds as though you were off on another exciting adventure, so welcome back!
CC, thanks for posting the lovely photo of the Friday Sherpas and their SOs. It’s great to see Cornerites getting to meet in person!
My cleaning lady is out of commission for a bit due to being bitten by a rabid fox. She was released from the hospital and is on antibiotics so, hopefully, she’ll recover quickly. 🤞
Have a great day.
Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Brian and sumdaze (welcome back).
I got the GET TOGETHER theme (I thought of Bob Marley’s One Love (“Let’s get together and feel all right”), but I had one empty square at the end. I was going to complain about a Canadian disadvantage, because I don’t know (and can’t always remember from previous CWs).all your American organizations or businesses (here’s looking at you SBARRO), but I should have known Black Lives Matter! The B was my blank.
(And of course there was no U in HONOR, but I am used to that by now.
I noticed URI, SRI, ANI and SKI-ed. then we had ANI, ANA and ANWAR.
Semi wouldn’t fit. RIG was needed.
CSO to Tinbeni with NEAT (and ICE POP).
Great photo of CMoe, MM and friends.
Yes sumdaze, Canada is beautiful. I have not been west to the Rockies for several years, but I loved seeing your photo. Quite an endeavour for you.
Wishing you all a great day.
A little crunchy for newbies on a Monday, but easily FIR w/o help.
Iron Chef. I enjoy "how to" cooking shows. I do not care for the competitions in cooking or many areas, such as Bachelorette, reality elimination shows, etc. I do like sports competitions.
Regarding Little Joe's jacket: The Bonanza stars' clothing does not vary from episode to episode. Despite all kinds of mayhem, their clothing reappears, never dirty, patched or worn out. Oh! they do dress up for parties.
On Gilligan's Island the castaways have amazingly extensive wardrobes and props.
I have admired Takei for years in movies, on TV and as an activist. He was interned with the other Japanese at age 5 during WW II.
Our local bagel shop has freshly baked bagels of many kinds with many spreads and accompaniments. I have seen pumpernickel, but not whole wheat. Store bought bagels can't hold a candle to made just that morning bagels.
That Quaker mascot image looks warlike. Other images have a more peaceable visage befitting real life Quakers.
GARBAGE TIME was inferable with just the G--BAG----- and confirmed by perps.
I noticed GET in every themer, but needed the reveal for TOGETHER.
Yes a little crunchy this morning. DNF since the NE remained blank. In addition not knowing the sports expression, I entered GARBAGE To ME.
No problem with TAKEI or the theme. Never heard of ICE POP but easy to guess.
Sumdaze: wonderful sounding trip. What a feat.
CC: enjoyed seeing the picture.
For a Monday took me a bit of taxiing to get off the runway but a smooth flight once airborne. Some odd clue/answers…I think of an “inhabitant" (of a citrus grove) as fauna not flora. The theme, though l, quite GET-able.
PAGETURNER? Now a days it’s a scrollupper (actually just like ancient times! 📜 or was that a scrolldowner?)… ah GET it now (head slap) “No ice" in a drink and “Noice” …. both NEAT
Spanish “So long”: muy largo too long , hasta la vista baby waaaayyy too long. 😄
HONOR: we’ve all heard “She Offered Her Honor, He Honored Her Offer, and All Through the Night it Was” yada yada yada 🫢 ……
HOSS: His Swedish mom named him “big and friendly” but as a kid I always figured the name went along with the size of the animal he was as big as 🐴. (Don’t finish a sentence with a preposition!!!)
To finish off a delightful dinner, at the end just ______ …… ADAMANT
That movie? Already ____ …. CNET
Wolf …..FIRSTDOG
It’s the day to take out the trash …GARBAGETIME
Ocular reaction to a sudden shock….ICEPOP
Jinx: the interviews that I hear Howard Stern do with “George Takei” are parodies and usually hilarious. The impersonator is spot on
Irish M: Your cleaning lady bitten by a rabid fox 🦊 “released from the hospital and on antibiotics…hopefully will recover quickly". But how is your cleaning lady doing? 😳

It was fun to see the Friday sherpas' photo. NOICE!
D-Otto @ 6:00. I was hoping someone would have some fun with the Dave Dudley song.
IM @ 8:12. Bitten by a rabid fox?!?!?! What in the world was she thinking?
Good Monday morning! The comment has often been made that on a given CW, some people find it easy and others difficult. So true. SubG found this a bit crunchy for a Monday and a few others did too, while I had my fastest solve EVER, racing right through this fun CW to FIR in 7 minutes. I cannot recall EVER completing a CW in 7 minutes. The only term I was not familiar with is “GARBAGETIME”; never heard of it. And don’t like it, either. Just because someone is on the B-Team doesn’t make them garbage. Anyway, thanx BC I absolutely loved this CW. And thanx too to Sumdaze for the outstanding write up. Sumdaze, I can’t even imagine bicycling 65 miles in one day. Even in my prime there is no way I could have done that, so congratulations! I looked at the 21 ways to use Pam cooking spray and would strongly discourage many of those uses. Pam is vegetable oil, and spraying it into a door lock for instance is a terrible idea. It will soon get sticky and gum up the lock. Many of the uses listed are far more suitable for WD-40. Which, BTW, is, in turn, a terrible choice for any cooking application. (End soap box oration).
Hola!
Welcome back, sumdaze! It sounds like a wonderful vacation, but cycling that far? I'd be on my deathbed after that. You must be in tip top shape.
This puzzle seemed meatier than most Mondays. I liked it.
ICEPOP brings back memories of buying those for my class when we had perfect attendance for a certain length of time. Our school was located not too far from a distributor.
C.C., thank you for postig that photo. It's nice to have a face with the names we see every day. And thank you for remembering our meeting. I haven't seen the "Cailfornia coven" in a long time and I miss those GET TOGETHERS.
Have a marvelous Monday, everyone! Today my gr-grandson went to daycare for the first time.
Ray O @ 9:54 ~ 🤣
sumdaze @ 10:05 ~ I haven’t heard all of the details yet, but I believe she was attacked by the fox. I know she lives in a remote rural setting.
Forgot to mention, great photo of Chris, Margaret, Joseph, and Valerie. Looks like a fun GET-TOGETHER.
A little over a decade ago my former boss was training for the MS-150 -- a 150-mile bike ride from Houston to Austin supporting muscular dystrophy. On that training ride he suffered a fatal heart attack. We still pedal our bikes around the 'hood on weekends, but we take our time and don't push too hard.
Foundation crew is busy out back breaking up concrete on the patio and digging under the house. They were due to be here a week ago, but our "city" guvment was unable to come through with a timely permit. They promise permitting within one to nine days, depending, not sure on what. Hopefully, when this is over, it'll have been an uplifting experience. And we also hope that our rear door to the patio will no longer be load-bearing. Fingers crossed.
I did not even GET there was a theme until Sumdaze explained it. Glad to see you back, Sumdaze, and view your lovely picture. 65 miles? Do you have an electric bike or are you the all-powerful? My son-in-law is an avid biker as are my brother & sis-in-law. Bro & SIL have electric bikes they use in the mountains.
Managed to fill the whole puzzle, but not easy.
I enjoyed the MENSA picture. I was married to a man who could fix anything from an alarm clock to huge machine engines. My snobby musician sister told my daughter her dad was nothing but an ignorant farmer. I asked my daughter if she thought a person who never did anything but sit on a piano bench and play was of greater use to humanity than someone who grew food for many people and could fix anything. Made my daughter feel better to see the situation from that perspective.
Sumdaze’s write-up was more fun than the puzzle (which was easy).
Hi PK @ 11:40. No, I do not have an e-bike. I did a lot of training to make sure I was ready for the trip. I often pull my 63 lb. dog in a doggie trailer behind my bike because she does not like to be left at home. When I do not have the trailer, it feels like I am flying! So, in a way, riding in the mountains without a dog was like pulling my dog at home. Also, keep in mind that I stop for snacks, to take photos, even take a dip in a cool, refreshing lake. The gorgeous scenery pulled me forward. There's no rush. It's a vacation!
It sounds like your sister was not just "snobby" -- she was also jealous of your marriage to such a clever man! It was cruel of her to say that to your daughter. Probably best to dismiss that memory.
Good for you, PK. I can't imagine what kind of adults you sister and BIL produced (if any.)
As a teen I was active in Boy Scouts. We did a 50 mile bike ride, broken into 2 days. About 35 miles the first day, IIRC. I had a single-speed bike that would be called a "beach cruiser" these days. We also did a 50 mile canoe trip over two days. I remember two events about that one. One team (of two scouts) capsized and their sleeping bags got wet. Cold night. Two other boys decided that it would be a good idea to swat a dead and bloated cow they encountered in the river with a paddle. A stinksploson ensued.
Ray-O, I remember George flew in to NYC when Howard went to Sirius. He was the "honorary announcer" for the week, then occasionally did the same several other times. I don't remember any parodies about him, but lots of his stories. The most poignant was when he discussed his upcoming wedding to Brad, after hiding their relationship in the shadows for a couple of decades.
I thought Howard's show was much more entertaining when he was married to Alison. He picked on (and backed) politicos of both parties equally, mainly for the impact their actions would have on him personally. When he upgraded to Wife 2.0 (Beth,) he got a taste of being part of the showbiz elites that once snubbed him. To support his habit of being in with the in crowd, he changed his habits to support only lefties and degenerating the rest of them. I ain't payin' for that.
I'm with unclefred on this one. Zip, zip, FIR. (Despite too many fill-in-the-blanks) Didn't GET the theme until I got to the blog. Was so happy with the speedy solve, I forgot to look! Thanks, sumdaze! HG- she was my teenage crush, too. I haunted the local theater on weekends, sitting through multiple showings. (Nobody checked) Saturday matinee: 25 cents, small popcorn 15 cents, small soda 10 cents. Plus newsreel, Serial chapter, two cartoons, and no ads!
When my kids were little, the local deli displayed their ice pops in a freezer right next to the check out. There were many, many pleas to buy some. Sometimes I did, but more often I made them myself in Tupperware
molds. Sometimes I filled them with fruit juice.
Thanks for all the great “illustrations”. A fun puzzle, and fun informative write up
sumdaze Welcome back and thanks for the photo! How many miles total did you ride? Did you camp or stay in lodges?
CC Yes, I am honored that Joseph/Manatee came to visit us here in Santa Barbara. I hope to meet some others of you. Very sorry that things didn't work out to meet up with the Texas people last year. The situation with my amazing niece there is quite tragic. Not sure when I will be able to see her again.
desper-otto, Jinx, Irish Miss, Yellowrocks et al Thanks for the GEORGE TAKEI comments. I was grateful to get to see him speak in person.
I highly recommend this PBS program on the incarceration of Japanese Americans that GEORGE TAKEI endured.
I thought I knew a lot about this, but this PBS program had shocking information that was totally new for me.
One of my best friends since high school and another later one, were both interned with their families. The first, whose father was Chinese-American and was not interned, only she and her mother. She doesn't speak much about it except to say she was five years old at the time. The other friend's family had a flower growing business here in Phoenix. It was, of course, confiscated, and all were sent to the internment camp. Such a tragedy. People cannot be blamed if they are bitter. These particular friends appear not be so since they were so young.
