Theme: It's a Jumble Out There!
SOUND MIXING usually refers to editing of audio files in a movie, whether to make sound levels even, to layer sounds, or to bring in additional sounds. Or something like that! We don't need to know the specifics here, because the trick is that the word SOUND is scrambled, or jumbled, in each of the answers to the starred clues.
The theme clues and answers are:
17. *Totally falls apart: COMES UNDONE. You can unscramble the red letters to spell SOUND.
25. *Floating lunar particles: MOONDUST. Again, red letters can be rearranged to spell SOUND.
39. *Gravity powered nourishment: INTRAVENOUS DRIP. Another mixed SOUND.

After I got the reveal, I looked back at all the sound “mixes.” Yep, they were all there. For a Thursday, this puzzle wasn’t too tough. There were very few obscure names, for instance. FIR, so I’m happy.

Nichelle Nichols is the UHURA, just as Sean Connery is the James Bond.
I've grown tired of the CEO PAY envy. Say my brother and I start companies, both have 5 employees who make $50,000 per year, and we each take a $200,000 salary. After a while I decide to sell my business to my brother, so he now has 10 employees making $50,000 per year, and his salary increases to $300,000. My brother went from making 4X the average worker's pay to 6X, which is all the envy-pimps talk about. They ignore that the combined company's CEO overhead is $100,000 less that the separate companies.
The Canadian group Guess Who had a big hit with She's COME UNDONE.
Today's the first day of the Scottish Open golf Tournament. Good tie-in with NESSie as well as NaomiZ's reminder of that old diddy. The witty Florence King once wrote "golf is an exercise in Scottish pointlessness for people who are no longer able to throw telephone poles at each other."

I hate anagrams! For some reason they don't click with me. My wife can quickly fill in the Jumble like the words are unscrambled. The reveal at the end made me look back and say, "Oh, yeah." Not very exciting and of no help solving basically a themeless puzzle.
Only trouble spot was parsing ALISTER, it looks wrong somehow. And I'm not sure why umpires only work a quarter of the time.
FIR. Typical Thursday puzzle with the expected degree if difficulty. Some obscurities, and a few proper names, but we'll placed perps to aid in solving.
I did not get the theme till I got here, but it really wasn't needed for the solve.
Overall an enjoyable crossword puzzle.
Took 5:16 today for me to eat my (crossword favorite) UDONS.
Nice and easy themeless puzzle, or so it seemed. Although I thought there might be a "home" theme with "home delivery" and then the attempt at a cute clue for ump ("work from home").
I didn't know today's actress (Tina) or her show/movie, nor did I know the Japanese dish (katsu), but I passed today's Spanish lesson (mes).
Odd week. Tuesday easier than Monday. Yesterday I was super busy and found the puzzle way too much of a challenge for the time I had for it thus got very little filled. Today is super easy again. Took just a few minutes. Oops forgot all about the theme😳

Well, after yesterday’s bear I figured today’s grid would be reSOUNDingly difficult, but this one seemed more of a Monday level as I got the FIR in 9:30. Clever clueing for HOME BIRTH and UMPS! KATSU was about the only unknown, UHURA was my Ektorp of the day. Across the St. Mary’s River from Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Soo Saint Marie)Michigan is the Canadian city by the same name, with a population of 75,000 it’s about six times bigger than the U.S. city. And speaking of Canada 🇨🇦, appropriately MED is a CSO to our resident pharmacist and today’s birthday celebrant, happy b/day C eh! 🥳

Satisfying outing today. Fun puzzle. I had a slowdown in the Great Lakes. CEO PAY and APOLO were slow to resolve.
My favorite pork dish is DON KATSU. My Japanese DIL makes the yummiest ones. I make them, too. I find using PANKO bread crumbs works best. I place the breaded cutlets in the fridge for 20 minutes. As with all breaded and fried dishes, cooling before frying makes the crumbs adhere better.
UDON is now part of American cuisine, just as salami and other types of "foreign" food have been adopted by us. You find udon in American cookbooks.
At first I was thinking of Swifty puns, not Taylor Swift fans.
TOM SWIFTY: “These scissors won’t cut,” said Tom snippily.
TOM SWIFTY: “I need this package delivered immediately!” Tom expressed.

The flow of the puzzle is a curious thing. Will it be south to north? A diagonal? Corners? Hopscotched? Today, for example, it filled down the west coast. That rarely happens. But I’ve noticed it’s different day to day as much as I try to go straight across the top west to east.
AAH! That's more like it! A gen-u-wine crossWORD puzzle. The few names were anything but obscure, with the exception of TINA, but the perps were fair. Lots of clever misdirection, making for an enjoyable outing. Theme? Oops! Knew I forgot something. Thanks for 'splainin, Naomi! (My brain is not programmed for anagrams!) Not a Jumble fan!

KATSU was my last fill and even then I doubted its accuracy but all the perps were solidly in place. I knew, however, that YR would know it. Japanese is not in my wheelhouse but MES, Spanish is very much so. SAN Juan also filled quickly but that's more of a geographic fill.

On my long ago trip to the UK we circled the loch where NESSIE is supposed to reside but never saw him/it. Hmmmm

Loved the beginning AAHS, I'M SAFE, especially right over that reference to the ICU where someone needed a STENT and was getting an INTRAVENOUS DRIP and someone else was under ETHER. (Wait, not anymore, that's an old anesthetic, not a current one.) Well, let's hope that the person getting all these procedures won't end up paying the ICU with an IOU.
But my favorite part of this puzzle were the animal references. I don't think I ever want to own a CROCODILE, but my sweet late husband got a TURTLE when he was 22 years old, and I sadly lost him in 2015 at the age of 81. This turtle (of the species 'gopherus agassissi') would now be at least 68 or more years old. Well, just a few minutes ago I went out on my back patio with a small plate covered with fresh lettuce and decorated with little pieces of melon. "Gophie" (the name my husband gave her) was waiting for me in her big pen, and dug right into her lunch when I put down her plate. It's not only wonderful that she's lived so long, but that she might possibly outlive me too. Guess I'd better but a provision for her into my will.
Well, enough turtle story. I'd better check to see if I spelled the name of Gophie's species right.

I remember when nurses had to time IV drips with their watch to set the correct rate . Now the line is threaded thru a minicomputer that handles multiple lines. “Set it and forget it” till the machine alarm says the bag is empty.

I wanna start right off saying Thanx to JC for this wonderful CW, which I not only managed to FIR but even found the theme...but only after I'd finished, and, for a change, remembered to look. As I said, WONDERFUL Cw. Clever, not too many obscure names, nice theme. Best clues: "Popeye's rival", which took all perps. None of Popeye's rivals from the cartoon world would fit, and I was stumped...until perps came to the rescue. Also 57A "Professionals...1/4 of the time", very clever. DNK: KATSU, TINA, and a few more, but perps saved me there too. This CW was SO much more fun than yesterdays nightmare. Thanx too to NaomiZ for the terrific write-up. HBD CanadianEh!! One of my BFFs had a BD yesterday!

I did this CW while travelling to a family get together; I FIRed nicely but arrived before I thought to look for the theme. (And oh joy, no circles to help me!).
Some appropriate fills today; today my AGE(S) increases by one year (ssh it’s a secret!). I was not a HOME BIRTH but was almost a Taxi Birth. And this retired pharmacist filled many a Doc’s order for MEDs.
Thanks to C.C. and all of you for the birthday wishes. I have enjoyed a beautiful day overlooking Lake Ontario after yesterday’s storm, and have been well feted with lobster, wine (white not REDS), cake and song, plus presents. I am spoiled!

Completely off topic: I wish the anonymi who access the blog on phones would realize that for those of us on a website, responses do NOT immediately follow the post they're responding to, but rather all posts are chronological. I often read an Anonymous response to something, but have no idea to whom or the topic.
Maybe a caution directed at phone users could be posted conspicuously near the top of the blog??
It is possible to respond directly under the post rather than waiting for the end.
